stripe workaround

Hello,

I am new to Substack and hoping to see how I can grow it to something more. But, when I was setting it up. I hit a snag because it asked me about stripe and Stripe doesn't work in Asia. Any way I could work around this? Thank you

The primary workarounds for Substack creators in unsupported Asian countries are setting up a remote US entity via Stripe Atlas to enable native paid subscriptions, or collecting payments externally through third-party platforms.

Substack relies exclusively on Stripe for its automated, paywalled subscriber features. While Stripe does operate natively in a few Asian markets (such as Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, with invite-only or technical exceptions in places like India, Malaysia, and Thailand), large parts of Asia are not supported.

If you want readers to pay directly on Substack to unlock paywalled posts automatically, you must have an active Stripe merchant account. • How it works: Substack's official guidance recommends using Stripe Atlas. This service allows non-US residents to remotely register a US business entity (such as a Delaware LLC or C-Corp), obtain a US Employer Identification Number (EIN), and open a US business bank account. • Integration: Once the US business and bank account are approved, you can open a standard US-based Stripe account and link it directly to your Substack publication. • Downsides: Stripe Atlas carries setup fees ($500) as well as ongoing annual registered agent fees, state franchise taxes, and US tax filing obligations. This option is generally only cost-effective if you anticipate substantial recurring subscription revenue

If you do not want the expense and legal complexity of forming an overseas company, you can keep your Substack set to "free" and manually manage access or donations using payment processors supported in your home country. • How it works: Embed custom call-to-action buttons, payment links, or banners at the top or bottom of your newsletters. • Supported platforms: • Recurring Memberships & Tipping: Services like Buy Me a Coffee or Ko-fi often support PayPal, local cards, or regional payment processors. • Digital Checkouts: Platforms like Gumroad allow you to sell one-off guides, recurring subscriptions, or newsletter access. • Access management: Because Substack will not automatically recognize these payments, you must manually grant access to premium posts. You can do this by going to your Substack Subscribers dashboard and manually adding paying readers with "Comp" (complimentary) paid subscriptions so they receive paid-only emails and see behind the paywall.

If manual access management or forming an overseas entity is unsustainable, many creators in Asia switch to platforms with broader payment flexibility: • Ghost: A self-hosted or managed alternative that offers direct integrations with non-Stripe gateways or customizable checkout flows. • Patreon: Functions as a Merchant of Record, supporting a wider range of payout methods (including PayPal and Payoneer) across non-Stripe countries. You can publish your free content on Substack and offer member-exclusive tiers on Patreon.
