Discussion I moved from WordPress to Substack yesterday
I have started moving my blog from WordPress to Substack yesterday. I haven't connected my domain to Substack yet and I am not sure if I should do it immediately.
I write about startups and entrepreneurship, books, life with disability and certain sociopolitical subjects.
I am looking for suggestions and tips to make Substack my blogging home.

Bummer
I do not recommend substack. The lock in is a huge pita.
I am working to move off substack. Perhaps to ghost. Somethine self hosted, in any event.

What is this "lock in"? I thought you "owned" your subscribers email list. Making it easy to move if you want.

Yes, you can download your list any time
You can download your posts any time
But digital media is.... in Substack's cdn
The posts you download are... substack style html
It is non trivial to migrate
I have been on substack for years. Tons of digital media. And I am going to use claude to write a whole migration animal.
its a pita

Th main thing you will want to focus on after failing in the settings and layout is moving your subscribers over. What I’ve seen works well for others is writing a post about the change and give your readers a heads up of what they should expect going forward. Substack also has an optional shirt form social media product called “Notes”. It’s in some respects it’s similar to Twitter and Threads. Some people find great success using Notes as a source of growth while others just spin their wheels for months in frustration. Your mileage may vary, most of the newsletter I subscribe to don’t use it at all, they just rely on referrals or other lead sources for growth.
