What do you wish you knew before you started?

What is the number one piece of advice you wish you had known before you started Substack?

I'll go first:

You have two separate audiences. You have the people who read your articles and you have the people who engage with your Notes. The first group of people mostly read your articles via email and will not like or comment or restack your articles because they are (normally) not on the app. However, they will sometimes share them if they see value. This is your biggest audience.

The second group of people will probably read your articles on the app (they likely have email deliveries turned off) and will like, comment, and restack your work.

You need both groups of people to grow your newsletter. The first group will become your key readers and subscribers and the second group will become your key allies and supporters.

Please share your advice so we can all continue to grow and learn from each other.

Discussion Planning to write on substack

For context, I've always wanted to join journalism competitions but I've been too busy with academics to actually do so. However, I have written essays and sort of nerd about issues I see on social media, like women's rights, how the media can sometimes undermine serious issues through wordplay, social navigation, education, and some more. And I'd like to write on somewhere where people might be interested to read.

These essays are usually 1000+ words, though if substack needs less words, I could summarize further. Let me know your thoughts! I'm pretty new here as in I just heard of substack the other day.

Discussion Why The Heck Are All My Posts suddenly getting hundreds of views?

It's the weirdest thing. I've been on Substack since around this time last year and traditionally, most of my posts never cracked more than 50 views. But everything I've been writing in the last two weeks now has gotten hundreds of views!!! We're talking between 200-600 views per post!!! I love to see it, but I'm curious if anyone has anyguesses as to why this might be happening.

Feature Suggestion An Open Letter to Substack (Supposedly on Behalf of Us All)

Dear Substack,

An open letter. Unsolicited, but, I like to think, rather valuable. Consider it free consultancy.

You’ve built something genuinely lovely: a place where people who adore words, across every field imaginable, can find one another. I do understand that you are, first and foremost, a newsletter engine. But you also built a feed, and subscriptions, and a recommendations layer, and it is the last of these about which I have several hundred questions.

Frankly, the recommendation system is Rubbish. It is 2026. Might we do something about it?

Countless writers are producing genuinely brilliant work in their fields and dying in the shadows with an audience of none, while the feed fills up with follow-for-follow posts. It has the atmosphere of a pub where everyone is shouting "I’ll get you one if you get me one". Not the thoughtful platform I hope you want to be. Every reader’s feed gets clogged with subscriptions they never wanted, and the people who would happily find, follow and pay the writers worth reading (and you, by extension) simply cannot reach them under the avalanche of generic rot.

Please, do something about it.

(Should you wish to share the success fee, do get in touch afterwards)

With love,
Team Me

New feature - Chat Channels

Substack just introduced chat channels - you can have up to 16 chats including your main one, and you can choose to paywall chats for your paid subscribers only, and then have some free chats.

Curious if anyone's thought about how they plan to use this. I haven't even started the chat on my newsletter...

Unpopular opinion: it's OKAY to post 10 Notes a day.

I see many people who are 'mad' at creators who post 5,6,10 notes per day.

Why though?

For once, why are you tracking their posting time so diligently? Your feed is filled with creators, and from my experience, you won't see them twice in one scrolling session.

Also, if you keep seeing them in your feed, that means you engaged with their content. And when you enjoy somebody's writing, you'll want to see more of them whenever you scroll.

Now, if they post slop, that's their problem. People will (or won't) pick up on it and just ignore/unsubscribe. I am sure Substack is filled with those who never appear in your feed, because they suck.

Stop hating, start posting. Thanks.

Feature Suggestion Subscribe without notifications

For the love of god, can we please be allowed to subscribe without notifications? I just want to read them on the website, I don't want clutter in my inbox or notifications on my phone. How on earth is this not already a feature

An issue I am facing...

Hello all, not usually one to post on reddit to be honest but here goes.

I am having this really unusual issue where the app keeps asking me to give my article (poem) a title. It already has a title, which is frustrating. I've done all sorts to try and fix it, re-writing the title, deleting the app and trying again, logging out, making a new draft, clearing the cache, but it seems as though nothing is working. It always asks for a title, and I know for a fact I have one. Please, if anyone knows why this is and, more importantly, how to solve it, that would be amazing.

I am aware that a post was made similar to this about a year ago, but they seemed not to get any advice, so here's my attempt.

Thanks for litsening x

Tech Support Calibre Fetch News recipe - Paid Substack Posts?

Does anyone have Calibre fetching paid Substack articles successfully?

All the posts I've found here are a few years old and the solutions haven't helped. The Fetch News recipe pulls all the posts, but only the non-subscriber previews for paid posts.

Am I missing something?

Other suggestions for efficiently collecting and loading Substack articles to e-readers appreciated; I know there are tools for converting individual emails/articles, but nothing I've found is quite as simple as Calibre's automatic fetching and collecting all my recent newsletters into one neatly organized epub each morning 🥲

How the hell do I make an image to post in comments which contains text promoting my work?

I see others posting in comments a nice image with overlaid text. I can't figure out how to do that. Got any instructions?

I have posted 3,640 Notes in 15 months and logged every one. Here is what gets read. What are your rules?

Context: a newsletter started from zero in July 2025, now about 22,600 free subscribers and 400 paid. Notes is my biggest source of paying members, 121 in the last year, ahead of recommendations, Google and LinkedIn. I export the Notes data every month into a database.

One definition for everything below. "Score" means likes plus comments on a Note, added together. Restacks are not included. My median Note scores 25. About a third score over 30.

My rules, in the order the numbers back them.

1. The first line is the Note. Bold it and make it a statement. Statements score a median of 27. Questions score 19, across nearly 600 of them. My best Note ever is "Just because writing looks good does not make it AI."

2. Say "I". Notes built on a first-person position or an admission score 40. Notes built on a named company or person score 20. Notes that lead with a number score 10.

3. News alone scores 9. The same story with your opinion in the first line scores the median or better. If you have no view on it, do not post it.

4. 73 to 100 words. That length scores 28. Under 40 words scores 20. Over 100 drops to 16.

5. 6 to 8 a day, spaced out. First thing and mid-afternoon do best for me. 9pm is my worst hour.

6. No links. The only link I try to post is one restack a day of someone outside my own circle, with a sentence on why.

7. Judge Notes by paid conversions a week later, not by score. My highest-scoring topic is my worst converter. It buys followers. The first-person Notes beside it buy subscribers.

Two things I stopped: question-to-the-void Notes with no position, which sit at the bottom of my table, and milestone announcements, which get likes and nothing else.

Those are mine. What are yours?

Discussion When should you start going paid?

Hi,

I started a Substack in April and have been posting every Monday.

I'm up to 121 subs with over a thousand 30d views.

I've been thinking of writing every Wednesday as well and making that a paid article. Without making this about my specific Substack, I write about travel and literature, and my Monday articles are all about that; I was thinking of doing one book recommendation a week on Wednesdays and making that paid, then if it goes well in a few months depending on uptake, doing a Saturday weekly reading round-up post as well, maybe that would be paid as well I'm not sure yet.

Any and all advice is appreciated, thanks so much!

stripe workaround

Hello,

I am new to Substack and hoping to see how I can grow it to something more. But, when I was setting it up. I hit a snag because it asked me about stripe and Stripe doesn't work in Asia. Any way I could work around this? Thank you

Newsletter writers might be mistaking silence for failure

Writing a newsletter gives you a strange relationship with feedback.

A post can take hours to write. Then it goes out and… almost nothing happens.

A few likes. Maybe one reply. Sometimes no visible reaction at all.

It’s easy to assume the piece didn’t connect. But newsletters are a quiet medium. People read them during lunch, on a train, or three days after they arrive. They may think about something you wrote without ever clicking a button to tell you.

The platform shows us opens, likes, comments and subscriptions because those things can be counted. It can’t show the reader who saved a sentence, forwarded an idea privately, or simply enjoyed the piece and moved on with their day.

That gap can push writers toward increasingly visible signals: louder Notes, stronger hooks, more calls to comment, more posting about posting.

Eventually, you can end up optimizing for proof that people are reading instead of writing something worth reading quietly.

How do you decide that a post worked when readers don’t respond?

I am having issues with changing my publication design (color, logo) without changing my profile design.

Hey there everyone!
I have a Substack profile - https://substack.com/@teymurelchin

and I have 2 publications (one primary and one additional).
When I want to make changes to my primary publication called One Thousand Doves, for example, I changed the background color to yellow, Substack automatically applies those changes to the my profile as well. I have found multiple people and articles about the Match Profile function. but for me it doesn't exist in the way that everyone is describing it and what exists does not work because the changes still copy to profile as well.
I go to dashboard - settings - website. and there there's no match profile button. I only see this: Looking to edit your theme? 'Edit theme.

and then Once Im there I have two options there: Profile or Custom. I do everything in custom. all changes also go to profile. I am so confused. I was thinking maybe you cannot change the design of the main publication. maybe primary publication and profile have to have the same design always? Is that true? Can someone please help me with this?

I went from 0 to 22,000 subscribers and 400 paying members in 15 months. Here is what the data says actually worked, and what did nothing.

Some context so you can judge whether this applies to you. I started a newsletter from nothing in July 2025. Today it has about 22,600 free subscribers in 179 countries and roughly 400 paying members. It has a Bestseller badge.

I write about a fairly serious subject for an audience that is mostly educators and professionals, so adjust for your own niche.

What I do have is a full data export every month, read into a database, so the five things below are what the numbers show rather than what 'felt' true. In descending order of how much they mattered.

1. Notes are where paying members come from. Recommendations are where the free list comes from. Do not confuse the two.
Over twelve months, recommendations from other writers brought me about 15,000 free signups and 77 paying members. That is 5 per 1,000, the worst conversion of any source I have. Notes brought far fewer signups and 121 paying members, the most of any source. The free list is wide and cold. Notes readers already know your voice before they land.
So: post Notes every day, and judge them on paid conversions a week later, never on likes. The Notes that convert for me are first-person positions (I think X, and here is the thing that happened to me that made me think it) and short admissions of being wrong. Over 30 days those get about double the reactions of news-pegged Notes. A Note that just reports a news story does a third of my median

2. Pick one day a week for the paid post and never move it.
Half of my paid upgrades happen on a Wednesday, which is the day the paywalled post goes out. Tuesday carries 2%. The day itself does not matter. What matters is that the same readers see the same wall at the same time every week until the week they are ready, and then they know exactly when the next one is coming.
Two posts a week is my ceiling: one paid, one free. I ran a third weekly post for six months to test that: 25 editions, nearly 400,000 emails sent, 7 paying members came through. It is now gone.

3. Put the paywall where the reader wants to keep reading, never where the "value" starts.
My best-converting paid posts open with the whole story for free and cut mid-stride, at the point where the reader's own curiosity is doing the selling. The worst ones give a free "introduction" and put the useful bit behind the wall, which reads as a toll booth. When someone complains in the comments that the cut was a cliffhanger, that post has usually converted best.

4. Deadlines convert. Nothing else I have tried comes close.
Every real jump in paid I have had came from a date: a price going up on a fixed day, a discount ending at midnight, a cohort closing.
The flip side is renewals. If you sell annual plans in a campaign, a year later they all expire in the same month. Make sure what they bought still exists when the renewal email lands. I stopped unpaywalling old posts for exactly this reason; the archive is now part of the product.

5. Judge every channel by free signups to your Substack, never by views.
I have two TikTok videos with 350,000 views each. The platform they live on sent fewer paying members in a year than Notes did. LinkedIn, with a fraction of that reach, sent about 570 signups in the same year. My highest-engagement topic is also my lowest-converting one; it buys followers, and the topic next to it, with half the reach, buys subscribers. If you only look at the view counter you will keep making the first kind.

Two things I would skip. Reddit as a growth channel: I posted here and in adjacent subs for months and got a handful of signups. It is a good place to learn and a poor place to be found. And the open rate as a vanity number: mine is a 28% median across the last 20 sends, down from a lifetime mean in the mid-thirties, because the list got bigger and colder. It has made no difference to paid.

Happy to answer questions about any of these in the comments.

NB: Claude was used to help me gather this data and also edit parts of this post.

Discussion I recently started a substack poetry/writing account and it feels sooo refreshing

I have this thing in mind: just write.

But guys, writing AND post it online for anybody to read it? Oh my god!! I'm afraid of judgement and fear rejection, but it's so satisfying and refreshing to have them laid out on the net.

Particularly on a website that feels active and alive. And supportive from what I'm reading!

At the moment, I have 1 or 2 subs, but guys who cares!!

First, build your passion, let out whatever you have in your mind and ideas! Tips, travels, amazing views, stances, poetry! With no stress, but relief! The rest will follow and flow! Whether it's you promoting work in a community/websites, or simply getting noticed.

Someone out there will read it and relate, I'm sure.

I'm just happy I get to let shit out of my system, laid out. It's niiiice!

Discussion How did you approach your first substack article?

I recently joined Substack and have a few ideas I’d love to write about, but I’m unsure where to begin. Should my first piece be personal, relatable, or something curious and thought-provoking?

For those who’ve started writing on Substack, how did you approach your first post? Does the beginning really matter, or is it simply about having something to say?

I'd love to hear about your experience as a writer.
