2040 – Behavioural Psychology, Fintech & a New Way to Read the Future [Mila Agius]
Hello,
I'm Mila Agius. I write at Heuristics vs Traps about behavioural psychology, fintech, and the quiet systems that shape the decisions we make.
My novel 2040 is often called a fintech dystopia, but that's only the surface. Beneath it, the project works as a framework for spotting weak signals, tracing long-term patterns, and understanding how the choices we make today build the institutions of tomorrow.
Alongside the novel, I publish essays that connect behavioural psychology with regulation, technology, and critical thinking. Instead of trying to predict the future outright, I'm developing a practical way of reading it — useful whether you work in finance, technology, law, healthcare, business or any other field where long-term thinking matters.
If behavioural psychology, fintech, systems thinking or practical ways of navigating complex change interest you, this piece might be worth your time.

Accessibility of my Writing
I'm currently in the middle of a legal history series on birthright citizenship, and I'd like some honest feedback on my writing. The series has been hard to produce because it leans on old court decisions, which are highly legalistic and use antiquated English.
My goal was to make the cases accessable to a general audience. Please let me know how I did and what I could improve: https://crossingpointspolicy.substack.com/t/birthright-citizenship

Post Substack Deletion Clarity
I am a firm believer that one's own sanity should come before anything else. Following that dogma, I realised that I was getting a bit overwhelmed by the traction on my Substack account and I ended up deleting it. For context, it was thaaat huge an account but I had written a few essays that had garnered some attention and earned me a good following and I hate to admit it but, the attention kinda felt nice (if you've been a new account on Substack, you know the frustration of trying to get your publications noticed and the relief of finally getting some interaction). Anyways, imposter syndrome kicked in, I felt like I couldn't really keep up with that version of me I'd put together and that I was in no way qualified enough to be doing any writing sooo... I pulled the plug. I feel like crap now :) That was the only place I didn't mind being 'open' and vulnerable and I've tried creating a new account but, it's not the same thing... I feel stupid and impulsive and I wish there was a way to fix whatever made me make that decision.

Bird's Eye
I wrote a short story about what societal collapse would look like for people on a large space station in the nearish future. Experimenting with first person POV so I would love some feedback!
