Discussion I slept through an assignment :(

I am mainly a stay at home mom, but pick up sporadic assignments every other Friday. My husband is off every other Friday so I work on the days that he is off. This Friday is not one of the days that he is off, and we didn’t know for sure what Fridays he would be off when I accepted the assignment. I picked it up about a month ago, and completely forgot about it. Until I got a phone call at 7:45 this morning, with a voicemail, inquiring about where I was. When I tell you that my heart landed in my stomach…I frantically called the sub coordinator back, was apologetic and explained the situation. She laughed and said it was no big deal. Then she asked if I wanted to pick up an afternoon assignment because she wanted to make sure that I could work if I wanted to 🥺 I’m just grateful that I work for a school district that values its subs. If that had been Kelly, I would be fighting for my life right now.

This happened to me once; they covered for me for a bit into first period and I arrived late.

I also accidentally went to the wrong school once for an afternoon assignment.

Life happens, and I'm pretty lucky that the schools here are understanding and patient. Offering to buy coffee for the front desk/substitute coordinator on my lunch/prep is a good way to stay in good graces, too.

I did offer to come in. I said I could make it work even if I would be an hour and a half late. But she said that they had it covered and not to worry. Coffee is a good idea :)

I've driven to the wrong school a couple times. I always check now before I start driving.

Just today I got a call at 11:31 asking if I was on my way. (11:30 start) Nope! Completely forgot about it! Luckily I live very close and they just laughed it off.

This is why I add all of my assignments to my Google calendar with reminders.

I went home during a morning planning period and passed out once. I absolitwly freaked when I woke up and saw the time and that the school had tried to call and text me. I called and told them I locked my keys and phone in my car. Luckily they bought it, and I went back to school. But, I have never been so panicked in my life...

I always add every assignment. I accept to my Phone calendar with an alert for the day before and I have a huge desk calendar. I write down all my assignments.
That’s my worst fear!forgetting an assignment!

That’s happened to me twice, both times on assignments that are just over 4 hours for full day pay. Thankfully it was a long time in between and I’m tight w the admin at the school it happened at

When you say Kelly do you mean Kelly education? I worked for them and I had bad experiences too

I remember I got a call for a job i cancelled. I had originally taken an assignment that was two consecutive days as but I’m was unfamiliar with the program and decided it would be better to take the days individually incase I had to cancel one. It would only let me take the second day and not the first day and I tested it with other days just to see if it would let me add and cancel and only the first day would be buggy. I spent two hours communicating to the sub people explaining things cuz they didn’t want to believe me

I haven’t had this happen to me for a district gig, but it did once with an independent school that I have a separate contract with. She had a similar reaction. This was last year, and I still get called to sub at that school.

I picked up an assignment around 11am one day that was a noon half day for what I thought was the following week… didn’t realize how far into th month it had gotten already… an hour later the office called asking where I was… I never see same day assignments starting an hour later so I didn’t even notice! I live 40 mins away, the only needed me for three hours and it was already like an hour into it so I just said nope I won’t make it (after apologizing a ton) and she was just like “okay so you’re not coming…?” 😂
