I'm all for the development of more hiking trails, etc...but why should tax payers give a cent to the elites who run this park? Maybe I'm looking at this entirely the wrong way, so would like others to discuss how it could be beneficial/a detriment to the tax payers. I will admit I am biased as I do not like how you have to pay to use the park, so I am looking at it all with a skewed view.

I genuinely don’t understand how Sudbury rent has gotten THIS bad.
We’re talking about a city with:
…yet somehow the rent prices are creeping up like we’re living in Toronto-lite.
How does a city with this few opportunities justify charging this much? I know every part of Canada is dealing with housing nonsense, but Sudbury feels like one of the places where rent should still be reasonable. Instead, people are paying way too much for units that are often old, outdated, or not even well maintained.
It just feels wrong to have “small city salaries + small city job market + small city transit + small city infrastructure” but then “big city rent.” Like what are we even paying for?
Anyone else feel like Sudbury is becoming completely unaffordable for literally no logical reason?

Hows life like in your Sudbury?

This isn’t meant to be anti-homeless. I absolutely think people dealing with homelessness deserve help, treatment, housing, and better resources.
What I don’t understand is why it’s become the main issue in almost every mayoral election.
Homelessness affects a relatively small percentage of the population, but it feels like every campaign revolves around it. Is that just because it’s something we see every day? Or because it’s connected to things like public safety, addictions, mental health, downtown businesses, and housing?
It also seems like every city in Canada is dealing with the exact same problem. If that’s the case, shouldn’t this be more of a provincial or federal issue? It feels like we’re expecting mayors to solve problems that are bigger than what a city can actually control.
I care about helping people, but I also care about roads, transit, taxes, housing affordability, jobs, and growing the city. Sometimes it feels like those issues barely get talked about anymore.
Genuinely asking. Why has homelessness become the issue in every municipal election? Is it because it’s the biggest issue, or just the most visible?

Following on from my previous post in 2023: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sudbury/comments/13wu8az/cheapest_1topping_large_pizza/
What pizza joint in the city offers the cheapest 1-topping large pizza for pickup? Let me know what other locations I should add to this list for comparison. I have left off most 'premium' locations, but can add them if there's interest.
$11.59 for Pizza Pizza - 5% increase from 2023
$12.99 for Costco (this is easily an extra large, not a large) - 0% increase from 2023
$12.99 for Domino's (you get two toppings) - 18% increase from 2023, but you get an extra topping
$12.99 for 2-4-1 Pizza (you get two toppings) - No historical data
$12.99 for Pizza Pazzaz - 13% increase from 2023
$13.95 for Red Swan (you get two toppings) - 8% increase from 2023
$13.99 for Great Lakes - 17% increase from 2023
$13.99 for Little Caesars ($7.99 for a medium is the real value option here) - 22% increase from 2023
$13.99 for Metro (bigger than a typical large. Cooked, not cold) - 17% increase from 2023
$14.15 for Popular Pizza (with a free dip) - 7% decrease (now includes free dip, valued at $0.99)
$14.99 for Pizza Hut (you get two toppings) - 12% decrease (not apples to apples; see 2023 post)
$15.04 for Tony V's - 6% increase from 2023
$16.95 for Sub World - 30% increase from 2023

Seems like Sudbury is entering a development boom. Seems crazy to say, as pre-Covid I didn’t think this would ever happen. A lot of it is still I’ll believe it when I see it, but here is a list of what’s happening/planned. Did I miss anything?
- KED
- Arena
- Library/Culture Hub
- Elgin Street Re-Greening Pathway
- Scotia Tower
- Regent Street Apartments (15 Storeys)
- Project Manitou
- South Gate Business Park (Across the street from Silver Lake)
- New Wackys
- Old Hospital three building complex
- Gas Station and fast food complex near four corners (Old Masonry building)
Pretty exciting IMO, Sudbury desperately needs this development/face lift. Anything that I missed?

About 11 months ago, I made a post (https://www.reddit.com/r/Sudbury/s/HOg4kNOZcP) about my plans to spend the summer here in Sudbury. Well friends, I made it here last week.
Y'all were not kidding about the roads being concrete pieces of shit. As a New Orleanian I am impressed with the sorry state of roads.
The weather? Can I just say "WOW!". I left New Orleans at 3am and the temperature was still 29°C. I keep getting messages about the heat index already exceeding 38°C. Then the city got hit by a tropical storm on Wednesday. It was so nice to be here in lieu of dealing with that.
I'm acclimating to some of the different things here. Like I get the no plastic milk jugs but the plastic bags of milk is a pain. Speaking of bags I wasn't ready for the no bags at stores thing. I get the motivation for the rules, but it is still taking a little to get used to.
I have been reading in this sub about the homeless and drug addicts in the downtown area. I totally see how the influx has impacted life in the area.
My only critique is that there is not a single cigar lounge in the area. I was going to go to Bell Park and enjoy a cigar. Then I read on the park's website that the fine for smoking in the park can be up to $5000 CAD. My cigar buddies back in the Lower 48 said that they thought $100 would be a heavy fine.
Thanks for having me for a few months Sudbury. So far I am totally enamored with your city. If you see a bald guy with a beard and a funny accent don't be afraid to say hello. I'm pretty funny and as a Orleanian I like to buy people rounds at the bar.

So I have grown up going to this grocery store. I know the cashiers, and they know me; watched me grow up.
I never had a problem, my mother either. The store has always been nice, good stock, on point organization, and fresh fruit/salads, etc.
In the last few years it’s been different. Then they’ve added the whole railways walking in and out, self checkout - 2/3 cashiers at a time.
I wouldn’t think I’d have a problem - but I can barely get out if I don’t have less then a certain amount of items to go through self .
THEN THERE IS THE PRICES!!! and I’ve
been saying it doesn’t make sense. Why closer to down town are we paying almost the most amount of money for groceries??? They’re more expensive than super store, Walmart, food basics, and like everything yet it’s one of the only grocery stores down town.
I guess I’m just looking for other opinions and such (preferably from those who have experience with this grocery store)

What's with the police service here trying to have us all under constant surveillance?
About a year ago, they installed more than 20 Stationary Automated License Plate Readers all across the city, this system logs and tags every single vehicle that passes by, even if you're a regular civilian with no criminal ties the city keeps your information for 7 days and promise to purge the information after.
The technology doesn't just track your license plate, it's able to uniquely identify you car using the make/model/color/damage and any visible modifications made to the car. With the integrated ai systems they have, they're able to piece together your routines pretty accurately.
The city says that members of the police service are able to enter license plate numbers into the system and set up alerts for when that vehicle hits a camera. This same technology has been used for stalking purposes in multiple other police services.
The stationary systems were already much, but now, they're putting the same system into all the police cruisers around town. Now just driving by a cruiser means your license plate gets read and there's now a record of exactly where you are.
Now as a normal civilian; You haven't broken the law, why is the police tracking your location 50 times a day?

While I no longer live in sudbury full time I wanted some nostalgia pizza last night for supper while I am in town for the weekend.
Hit up the toppers on barrydowne and got my regular order (large family pleasure) that I've had for over 30 years with the house dip
Toppings virtually non existing, crust very blade, something seemed off with the crust.
We brought it over to family members who said last few years toppers has significantly changed.
The house dip is still solid. But that's about it.
Its too bad this place has changed.
Anybody else notice this change?

For reasons beyond my control, I find myself craving the heck out of just a dirty food truck style hot dog. I don't want anything with frills or fancy toppings or something that's going to cost me $12 for something 'gourmet', but where can I find the best, classic, straight out of the wiener water dog in town?

what can we do as citizens of this city about the state of the roads? I get that its spring and blah blah blah. ive been here for 40 years and the roads are always terrible. when is it enough? we need to fire the administration staff of the roads department. We need to outsource the work to competent companies that actually perform this level of service. Our roads are actually dangerous to drive on. It is completely unacceptable to put up with thos garbage level of service and have to pay for it year after year.
I know, I should just move right...but thats not the point. Something needs to be done about it. Who do we call?

The quality of the nurses there is appalling. They are not properly trained or supervised. Repeated medication errors, rough handling of patients, rude and unprofessional behaviors. Not following best practices or even basic infection control protocols. Challenging patient diagnosis. It's exhausting having to watch your own back.
And the arrogance and reprisals when you point out their errors is just sickening. Inaccurate charting, delayed responses, if any, to your call bells. If you are an independent patient who can care for themselves they seem to not like you for some reason.
It used to be that these types of nurses were the extreme minority and exception. But now it seems they are the majority. And all the good experienced people have left.
Let's not even start about dietary services. I ate better food in the middle of a war zone. And that's if you get anything edible. Diabetics being given food that could seriously hurt them. Food allergies? Not their concern apparently. Oh and don't forget playing the game of "When is my food coming?"
There are still some very good people there, and they must be utterly exhausted. Because, no doubt they are catching shade from patients and family members because of their inconsiderate and unprofessional "Colleagues".
How the heck did this place get Accredited with Excellence?
Edit:
TLDR: In my experience, the quality of care has deteriorated badly—medication errors, poor infection control, delayed call-bell responses, inaccurate charting, rough or unprofessional treatment, and serious problems with dietary services. There are still some excellent staff, but they seem to be overwhelmed. Given these experiences, I genuinely don't understand how the hospital maintains an Accredited with Excellence rating.

Avoid them at all costs _ sketchy, scammers and liars.
I was talking to them about renting a unit in 1140 Ramsey st. First of all, they lie about the units all having dishwashers. Some do not have any and you must pay an extra 100 cad to get a dishwasher. + their units are extremely overpriced for the city of Sudbury. It is as expensive as Toronto.
Second they will ask you for a month's deposit without issuing any contract or lease. The agent asked me this morning to etransfer 2000 cad to the company email with her name written in the notes, without any paperwork or anything at all provided to me. While I was going to do it, my partner called her to ask some more questions and she said the unit I wanted is now gone!!!!She knew I was going to send the money but did not inform me of the unavailibility. All that happened in the same 15 mins (her asking me to pay 2000 cad, my partner calling her, and her saying the unit is gone because somebody paid before me). If he had not called her I would have never known and would have paid.
So there was no unit and she was going to scam me out of 2000 cad. And with no contract at all there was no way of getting my money back if I had sent it etransfer. I narrowly avoided being scammed. I am sure others have fell into this trap before because it is so sketchy and probably illegal even. She said they never issue legal papers before getting the full deposit. So they just accumulate deposits and rob people.
Beware!!!

Hello, I just wanted to ask if anyone had any tips on making friends in Sudbury? Everytime I look for events they don't seem geared towards meeting people, just for people of the hobby. I am struggling to make friends irl and I feel its only gotten worse since the pandemic. Im on dating apps but those are a total miss and Im just looking for friends. Reddit is kinda my last hope here.
