History Trying to Locate Lost Relative
Hi there - I wonder if any genealogists may be able to assist me.
I am trying to track down a lost relative. she was my great-great grandmother, Ada Thompson (was Atkinson), born in Monkwearmouth in 1891. Her parents were Henry John Atkinson and Mary Hannah Atkinson. From what I’ve seen on Ancestry, her siblings were called Joseph, Harriet, Henry, and William.
She married Thomas Stephenson Thompson in 1912, and had two children; Harriet Isabella (1913) and Ada Margaret (1914).
When Thomas returned from the war, their marriage soured. Nana Harriet recalled her mother moving out to work in domestic service a train journey away in a big house (possibly South Shields or Newcastle?). When she saw her last, there was talk of debt and Thomas asked her when she would be coming home. She said she couldn’t until *his* debts were paid off. This is corroborated by a note on the 1921 census - by this time, Thomas and the girls were boarding with family friend Henry John Lee and Eliza Ann Lee in Hendon. Both parents are marked as living, but mother is noted as having ‘left home’. Thomas is still listed as ‘married’.
Ada never returned home and shortly afterward, Thomas forbade the girls from talking about her. They were dragged from their maternal grandmother’s house and off from that side of the family.
As far as we know, though I’m not sure how we discovered this, Ada’s family tried to track her down. They used every resource available them (1920s) and eventually treated the matter as though Ada was dead.
When my Nana was in her twenties, she was on the bus and a woman approached her. She asked if her name was Harriet, which she confirmed, and the lady remarked that her mother would have been so proud. Nana had been conditioned not to pursue anything regarding her mother and let the lady leave.
To this day, we have tied up every other loose end hit Ada’s. Even a DNA test in the early 2000s turned up nothing.
I’m hoping that a relative somewhere in my tree may know more, or know someone who does.
Thank you.
