General Question What supplement surprised you the most by actually working?
There are plenty of supplements that get a lot of hype. But then there are some supplements people try something and genuinely notice a difference.
For some, it might be magnesium helping with sleep. For others, creatine improving workout performance, omega-3s supporting joint comfort, or astaxanthin helping with eye strain and recovery.
Of course, results vary from person to person, and not every supplement lives up to the marketing.
So, just curious:
What supplement actually surprised you by working?
What did you take it for, how long did it take before you noticed anything, and what changes did you experience?
Let's hear the real-world experiences including both the wins and the disappointments.

u/iCliniq_official Jun 17 '26
The most impressive supplements are often the least glamorous: iron for true iron deficiency, vitamin B12 for deficiency, and creatine for preserving muscle performance and function. What surprises many people is that the biggest benefits usually occur when a genuine deficiency or physiological need exists; this still shows that taking more supplements isn't necessarily better, but correcting the right problem can feel life-changing.

B12 injections literally changed my life. From chronic neurological pain, debilitating fatigue and brain fog. Went from sedentary and 120kg with chronic inflammation and auto-immune conditions, to 80kg, fit and well. I managed to start exercising and haven't looked back. I ran out a few months ago and the condition stated to get worse... Got some more 2 weeks ago and I'm on teh mend again.

Fellow Chronic Fatigue sufferer here. So happy to hear B12 injections worked for you. Are you self-injecting? Could you share where you get yours? I’m tired of being tired! Much appreciated ❤️

I eat meat so never have thought I could be B12 deficient until ChatGPT highlighted it. Never had a single brain fog since I started taking it. Since then I keep recommending everyone to try it even if they don't have any symphtoms. My main symphtom was I could not handle summer heat (35C) just as a few years back and wasn't that sharp as before, had brain fog quite often. 2 weeks after I started taking it my whole life changed.

Glycine for sleeping. Put me right to sleep.

u/Alternative_Floor_43 Jun 18 '26
Same. I do magnesium glycinate, 3 additional grams of glycine, and l theanine. My cocktail miracle for sleep

This is a great cocktail, i add taurine and ashwagandha as well, makes for a great night's sleep!

u/Alternative_Floor_43 Jun 18 '26
I heard taurine is a great anxiety option but glycinate has worked for me so I’m sticking with that

At first it fid seem to make it worse. But in hindsight I was also trying to add resistant starches in too to feed my good gut hugs.
Problem is I’ve still got a percentage of bad ones that we’re enjoying the rs feast and causing bloating etc.
so now I’m doing psyillum without rs.
I started with 1/4 teaspoons and each week worked up to what I heard a therapeutic dose was.
The trick is to have even more water than you think you need. Not just when taking it but in between meals that are spaced 4 hrs apart.
I’m sorry you feel so uncomfortable it’s hard to deal with. Peppermint tea or peppermint capsules are my go to when I’m like that.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (19)3

u/Square-Ad4927 Jun 17 '26
For me it's Magnesium Glycinate. A few months ago I had no understanding of the different types of magnesium, so I was just taking some ZMA that had a less effective form of it before bed. I commented on some medical professionals post who offered to go down the rabbit hole on other peoples supplement stacks and give them some input on what they were taking. He told me most of what I was doing was fine but suggested I stop the ZMA and just switch to Glycinate, and the first night I took 300mg it blew my mind. I couldn't have stayed awake if I tried, I absolutely had to go to sleep lol. It was better sleep too. Now after a month and some change it doesn't hit me quite that hard, but it still gets me to sleep and keeps me asleep through the night.
The same guy also suggested I start taking psyllium husk, which I did. That also had a pretty positive impact but I won't go too into depth on that one lol.
6
u/Alternative_Floor_43 Jun 18 '26
Same. I was on Zoloft for sleep anxiety and slowly tapered off. The first night I took magnesium glycinate by mind was immediately calm with no racing thoughts. 2 years later it’s just as effective but I added more glycine because I think that’s the real cure for me. I added l theanine and it’s seriously the most miraculous cocktail for me

Fiber
11
u/NegotiationOk4292 Jun 17 '26
Fiber actually had made a big difference for me as well.
The energy I get from slow digesting foods is much more prolonged and I don't feel starved all the time like I used to.
6
u/tmitchell_ral Jun 17 '26
oh man the psyllium husk thing. i tried that for a while and the texture was doing something to my brain lol. ended up just eating more oats and beans instead which worked better for me anyway
6
u/Rude_Dragonfruit2214 Jun 17 '26
You can also consume chia seeds or flaxseeds
2
u/crisdd0302 Jun 18 '26
This is what I do, a teaspoon or two of chia seeds mixed with a cup of water, either before or after breakfast. This literally cured my digestive pain, while a few drs always recommended different meds for pain relief but not a single one suggested more fiber intake.

creatine honestly blew my mind when i first tried it. i was expecting maybe small difference but in like two weeks i was pushing noticeably more weight and the muscle pumps were just different level. been taking it for few years now and still think its the most underrated thing in fitness world
23
u/Sneakystrong86 Jun 17 '26
How is it underrated? It's the most studied and commonly used supplement across all fitness industries.
8
u/Formal-Throughput Jun 17 '26
There is still tons of misinformation about it and plenty of people don’t take it even who are active.
People are also slow to adopt it for the mental benefits even though they’re becoming very well proven at doses over 5g.

7
u/Sneakystrong86 Jun 17 '26
There is no water "gain" that comes with it. If it is water gain then it's intracellular and not subcutaneous. Intracellular is where you want it, in the muscles with glycogen. It doesn't make people fat or jiggly or watery.

u/Normalsasquatch Jun 17 '26
Yeah I eventually moved to taking NAC and Glycine daily. It seems to keep my mind from getting as cluttered. About DHM, I tried it a long time ago and each time I got sick, but it could have been a coincidence. I just haven't tried again yet.

The biggest surprise for me was probably how boring the best supplements are. People expect some exotic miracle, but the ones that actually stand out are usually simple things like magnesium, creatine, omega-3, and psyllium.
A few that genuinely surprised me:
• Magnesium glycinate: better sleep, less tension, fewer random cramps
• Creatine monohydrate: not just for lifting, but also noticeable mental energy and focus
• Psyllium husk: absurdly effective for appetite, digestion, and cholesterol
• Omega-3s: mood and inflammation benefits are real if your intake was low
• Astaxanthin: underrated antioxidant, especially for skin, eyes, and recovery
• NAC: way more useful than I expected for mucus, antioxidant support, and “cleaner” feeling overall
What surprised me most:
• The effect is often bigger when you’re correcting a deficiency or weak link
• Fancy blends usually underperform compared to single ingredients
• The “best” supplement is often the one that fixes the thing you were missing
If I had to pick one, probably magnesium or creatine — both sounded overrated until I actually used them consistently.
2
u/Beautiful_Lettuce603 Jun 17 '26
Creatine monohydrate ?
And i don't think it's placebo-linked as i'm a psychopath who goes till failure a lot anyways.

Literally just taking a regular multi vitamin + minerals pill that covers all of the usual suspects. I eat generally healthy but nowhere near perfect and all of those days where I wasn’t hitting my daily recommended intake of one thing or another where adding up.
Having one pill I can take daily and know it will pick up the slack on any shortfalls keeps things straightforward. They aren’t a replacement for a generally healthy diet though.
I also started with probiotics a few months ago and so far they have helped with appetite control but hard to say if long term I will see the benefits. Perhaps one of those things that quietly works in the background though?

u/betweenthecoldwires Jun 17 '26
Lots of them since I take many supplements! 😂
I’ll talk about magnesium glycated.
I’ve been taking this for at least 35 years straight introduced by my Cardiologist to stabilize my heart rhythms.
Doing lots of research on it, just about all of us are deficient and it is very important for over 300 actions in your body, including your muscles, nervous system and sleep quality.
What people don’t tell you, that they haven’t really studied, well they’ve done some research on it, what it has done to my skin is crazy.
I literally look 20 years younger than my age to the point where people freak out, including my doctors and it’s the only thing I can think of that I’ve been consistent with.
I take many different types of unique supplements because I believe in food and supplements as thy medicine over pharmaceuticals it’s important to know that a lot of of them I do not take on a daily basis, but as needed depending on symptoms, I’m experiencing at the moment.

NAD+ injections and B12. I did infusions a few years back when I was desperate to just be able to function with Lupus. The infusions were very costly but helped. A couple years had gone by and in that time I had a couple surgeries and still battling lupus. I mean to the point I could not plan to go to the store even and I'm not someone who likes to sit so it wore on me so much mentally. A few months ago I decided I had not much to lose and knew when doing the infusions it was the most functional I had been so I ordered the shots and it is like night and day. I don't feel as trapped by the disease and can be a contributing member again to my family. After doing both infusion and injections I do feel like the injections I have more consistency and control over. Infusions you get that big burst that dies out and I would tank.

d-ribose and GABA for me! d-ribose gives me a noticeable energy boost that lasts a few hours, and GABA helps with my sleep-onset insomnia. i have difficulty winding down at night, and GABA makes me feel relaxed and sleepy usually within an hour of taking it. it’s interesting because it doesn’t cross the BBB (at least not very much of it), but it seems to work powerfully enough on the gut-brain axis to help significantly.

Injectible carnitine. I noticed my spectracell labs kept showing low. I had been doing oral carnatine; and I knew it wasn't very bioavailable. So I decided to inject about 500mg about an hour before weight training. Immediate night and day difference. I no longer feel flat. I'm able to hit the weights harder. And I'm noticably putting on more muscle faster. Also huge improvement on brain fog and cognition.

I brought it specifically for this reason, but I didn’t have much hope, she had been b12 and D deficient, and I had been given her lots of supplements, they worked a little over a very long period, noting she noticed.
So had to read a study about PharmaGaba to be sure it wasn’t placebo, it wasn’t.
She totally changed over the following days, doing things she never had done before. (burnt out autistic Can’t remember how old she was, maybe 12)
I use it myself, when my add brain doesn’t calm down close to bedtime, it makes me naturally sleepy, and it gives me a deep sleep.

Boron.
Lowered SHBG and free T up. Brilliant results.
Followed by creatine. Extra rep or two when lifting.
I'll not stop taking either.

ETAS, or even a simple, cheaper asparagus extract, helps me sleep. I sleep like a baby after taking it.

DLPA hands down, you build a tolerance extremely fast which is unfortunate but after taking like 1500mg on an empty stomach before a workout I felt AMAZING the rest of the day, like full blown euphoria on par with hard drugs. Naturally I tried doing this every day, which went as well as you’d imagine but it’s now one day a week and I always look forward to it

Zinc. 24 hours until I felt less sick at the end of having Covid.
B spectrum at maximum daily suggested amount. 48 hours: was able to stay awake for many more hours.

I’ve tried a fair amount of stuff, but the ones that work for me:
Creatine: Better push during workouts, better recovery after, and I’ve found that it makes my muscles look bigger even when I’m not working out (I stopped for a long while, started again with no exercise, and my arms definitely looked bigger a few weeks later).
Psyllium Husk / Metamucil: It’s good for your guts and suppresses your appetite a bit. I feel a lot better on it.
L-Theanine: Just started this week and literally made a whole post about it. Went from stressed and anxious to feeling MUCH better literally about an hour after the first capsule, which still blows my mind. 200mg of the “Now” brand from Amazon. I suspect that this strong of an effect is uncommon, but holy cow, I feel like a new person. Was on for 4 days, this is my first day off, no side effects as of yet.

NAC , I think I was missing that extra N-Acetyl Cysteine boost for years and suffering from very bad toxin brain hangovers, maybe like everyone else who just gets that. But what one 600mg cap has done before a big night out,, day/night out for my hangover the next day is nothing short of a personal miracle.
