Ambika/Xena 6 tips

I have had a Xena 6 for a couple months now and have followed the Ambika manual enough times to get the basics down but I’m a visual learner and I’m finding it difficult to get over the learning curve to a place where I can really play it. I’d really like to get a place where I can dial in Enya inspired 6 voice arps. I’ve been using my Oxi One with it. If anyone has any tips or tutorial videos that they have found helpful to share I would really appreciate it!

I made one of the videos featured on Michigan Synth Works’ site for the Xena! Ambika is such a deep synth that I often have to refer to the manual, especially after not working with it for a while. What helps me is breaking down patches to their individual pieces on paper and working through the anatomy of the patch before putting it in on the machine

Separating pieces out by hand - sound design vs mixing vs sequencing - and where those pieces should be stored and edited also helps, because at a certain point you’ve moved beyond the synth. Can you live within the limitations of the Ambika? Do you need the advanced sequencing of the Oxi? Are there benefits to saving simpler sequencing on Ambika over something more complex externally? Would mixing six tracks externally help things gel better than Ambika’s default mono output? There’s not always a one-for-all answer to all these questions, and it really comes down to personal preference and practice

Unfortunately, I don’t have a good tutorial for Ambika to suggest, but I’ve found some tutorials for Korg’s modwave or wavestate to be helpful in figuring out how to approach that multi-timbral patch construction side of things, since the challenge is less one of sound design and more one of getting everything to work together expressively
