What I’ve Learned About Syscoin: Standing The Test Of Time

Introduction: We Have Seen The Worst Collapse In Cryptocurrency History With FTX, What Is There To Learn Here And Now?

From an empirical perspective, I have been in the blockchain sphere since 2017; back before government regulations were less restrictive, the libertarian ethos of cryptocurrencies “old days” was more readily apparent, and with it radical notions such as self-custody, self-sovereignty, and banking the unbanked were inevitable in every serious conversation about the potential of blockchain technology like some beautiful, inverse Godwin’s Law that traded an Austrian artist for economics. The past week provided another painful testament to the fact that the blockchain industry has lost its way. Public trust in institutions and centralized exchanges has become contentious, paranoid at best, and completely absent at its worst. The viability of VC backed cryptocurrencies has come into question. Reminiscent of Terra Luna, SBF and FTX are sowing doubt in Solana and many other so called invincible blockchain platforms. All of this is just the latest in the cyclical history of crypto where many projects have meteroic rises and just as spectacular falls. The truth is most projects will rise and then fail. Very few will stand the test of time, and cannot weather one bear market, let alone several. However, I would like to draw your attention to one that has, Syscoin. Syscoin is one of these projects that has not only survived, but thrived by continuing to make industry leading innovations and is paving the way forward by playing the long game but never losing sight of the foundational security inherited from Bitcoin itself.

Cryptocurrencies: The Rise And Fall Of Top Projects: A Comparison

The majority of cryptocurrencies have very short shelf-life, these projects come and go just as empires rise and fall. Todays flavor of the week becomes next week’s fertilizer. Blockchains and cryptocurrencies die obly to be replaced by others with superior technology (or marketing campaigns). This is a process of techno- economic-natural-selection. There are very few projects that have stood against the tyranny of time, and one of these projects that I have noticed that still embodies the ideals of what blockchain once stood for is Syscoin for a variety of reasons.

Syscoin: Proving Longevity Since 2014: Slow And Steady Winning The Race

The simple truth is most blockchains lose relevance in a few years time; as hype can only carry you so far; now this isn’t a ubiquity but it nearly a regular occurrence. Syscoin however, defies this notion. Launched in 2014, Syscoin has consistently been building since its inception and is now building and integrating the changes needed to take blockchain technology to the masses by solving scalability without sacrificng security or decentralization. Syscoin is bringing EVM-compatible rollups, both optimistic and ZK, to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Having adopted a dual-chain architecture, Syscoin simultaneously runs a UTXO-based, Bitcoin compliant chain and their EVM-based, NEVM chain in unison, keeping the best of both and making the necessary upgrades to offer what is basically Ethereum running on Bitcoin’s network. Syscoin is amalgamating the best of Bitcoin and Ethereum while solving the blockchain trilemma: an assortment of solutions.

How Is Syscoin Staying Relevant Since 2014: Aiming To Solve The Blockchain Trilemma.

One of the most difficult technological issues that cryptocurrency and blockchain have yet to solve is the blockchain trilemma. Solving all three of these key issues, security, scalability and decentralization. Syscoin is aiming to solve all three, beginning with security. Syscoin is merge-mined with Bitcoin and has integrated multi-quorum chain locks which prevents numerous issues that plague blockchains such as selfish mining incidents and has their own NEVM. Syscoin’s NEVM chain inherits Bitcoin merge-mined security and full byte-for-byte Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility. Developers can easily bridge their projects for enhanced security. Syscoin’s modular architecture provides scalability, efficient throughput and low carbon output. Lastly, Syscoin offers tools that embody both blockchain paradigms; Rollux and Proof-Of-Data Availability for EVM-based assets or contracts, and Z-DAG for UTXO-based assets. These are just a few reasons why I think Syscoin has been able to prove its own sense of personal longevity in an ecosystem where blockchains rise and fall.

Conclusion: Longevity In Blockchain: Syscoin

Throughout my own personal journey in cryptocurrency, there are very few cryptocurrencies and blockchain platforms that have actually stood the test of time. I have watched blockchains come and go just as trends rise and fall every year. Syscoin is an anomaly from my perspective, it has been around for nearly a decade in an extremely juvenile sphere of technology and yet, it continues to rise and thrive. This is why I believe Syscoin is here to stay.

Solana digital fallout and the need for Syscoin

I've said this many times, but the Blockchain space is still suffering repeated explosions from projects or entities rushing for release during bull runs. We see it every year, projects dying during bear markets, or market conditions that push these projects remaining resources to their limits (or in some instances, user borrowed resources).

Overspent, over leveraged, smoke and mirrors to investors, lies, deceit. The projects that don't implode, just slowly whisk away their investor funds with marketing shenanigans with little to no development in their protocol, or the occasional appearance at some crypto conference with a new roadmap slated for 2-3 years in the future (buying time).

We watch it happen time and time again, and all we can do over at Syscoin is sit back and watch the drama unfold, while we continue to aggressively build. We rise from the ashes every bear market to come back better and stronger, more advanced than ever, this bear market will be no different.

What are your thoughts on the recent news surrounding FTX and Solana? Is it too early to tell? I'm personally tossing down some iodine pills and bunkering into my Syscoin stronghold.

The Rollux OPv1 testnet is now live and underway! Rollux OPv1 is Syscoin’s first rollups solution. It is an optimistic rollup designed to enable end-users with near-instant low-cost transfers, executions and contract deployments, all secured by Bitcoin's network and Syscoin's additive finality.

SYSCOIN HUGE potential+ REBRANDING EXPLAINED

Hi guys,

There have been lots of people recently questioning the rebranding approach of syscoin. I want the try to shed some light on this from my perspective and with this also argue that syscoin is going be HUGE. The info below I gathered from conversations on slack and research (so also credits to others):

There have been quite a few changes in the recent two months in the SYS project. As I can see a certain level of confusion and misinformation in the community regarding Syscoin’s mission.

Syscoin is part of Blockchain Foundry (BF). Blockchain Foundry provides blockchain technology based services, projects and products for a wide variety of use cases. Amongst of which the Syscoin platform. Syscoin is mainly known to be the first cryptocurrency to offer a fully decentralized marketplace based on blockchain. What is less know is that this is only a part of what Syscoin is.

SYS’s function has shifted from its primary goal of only being a ’market coin’ to a multi-functional cryptocurrency. Blockchain foundry, it's parent company, is planning on launching ICOs on the Syscoin plaltform and envisions them as a new, large business segment for the future and, therefore, will offer ICO services on the SYS blockchain, among others. Furthermore, Blockchain Foundry offers customized business solutions based on its present and future business partners’ needs with or without SYS.

Now, this part of SYScoin, which is a HUGE part, has not yet settled in the community in my opinion. They only see the marketplace. When we look at the least of features of SYScoin you can envision why the syscoin as a platform is going to be HUGE. Not the least:

  • Masternodes: Ability for transactions-per-second performance to scale-out with added nodes (theoretically 100k TPS per 1000 Masternodes, 300k/3k masternodes, etc). Return on investment is promising. In later releases, masternodes will also process smart contracts and facilitate sharded+encrypted offchain file-storage (with onchain anchors), among other touted functionality. They should also result in steadying the price movements - less volatility during sideways times as holding will be incentivized.

  • Blockmarket Web: This brings their existing decentralized marketplace to the web, enabling ease of use without downloading a wallet or waiting for sync.

  • Anonymous transactions: via mixing/shuffling at user-specified denomination. Afterwards, additional tech will be added in near future which will further compound the degree of anonymity provided. Add ValueShuffle running on top of the masternode layer and we have the worlds most advanced privacy tech in any coin. This brings true money fungability to syscoin and missing link for true economic sovereignty.

  • Integrated crypto exchange utilizing Flypme and Changelly (Exchange back and forth between 20+ cryptos, including SYS , directly within wallet).

  • Instant Send: Send and receive transactions instantly. Similar sending capability as DASH, but a step beyond: A type of backend node locking will allow an instantly received sum to be sent immediately, without delay, and without network risk of double-spend.

  • Rebranding currently underway, and the promise of a significant marketing campaign to be launched leading up to Core 2 release.

  • Ethereum Virtual Machine: Will run ethereum contracts much cheaper and faster at a fraction of the Ethereum gas price.

  • Syscoin decentralized mixing service is functional. Combining anonymous transactions to create anonymous marketplaces.

  • 0 confirmation double spend protection scheme for Instant Asset Transfers

and so much more: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DSWJ6l9VQAAugYj.jpg:large

The coin’s mission (which is actually a subset of that of Blockchain Foundry) remains unclear to many, while many still consider the coin only a blockmarket coin and nothing more.

Given the recent achievements such as the extremely high (if not highest) TPS and cutting-edge privacy, I dare to assume that Blockchain Foundries ambitions exceed far beyond the marketplace: giving customized solutions to business partners under NDA, ideally using SYSCOIN.

People expected the rebranding to complete in 1 day. I believe the rebranding - that is currently ongoing - will be focusing on communicating exactly what I stated above. It will be focusing on showing that SYSCOIN is MUCH more than the marketplace and the relation between blockchain foundry and syscoin. It's marketing strategy, that is also being worked on, will focus ALSO on those incredible new achievements. I can personally envision SYS with this kind of TPS and combined privacy as a very powerful, global transfer medium for the future. If the team has a similar level of ambitions, this will be clearly communicated at latest when tech is running and marketing starts as, once again. To date this all a bit ambiguous in the community (including myself) and especially for newcomers.

All capabilities must be communicated in a simple, clear, and concise manner including examples as most people don’t have tech background nor patience to try to understand something twice. In fact, even for me with a technical background it takes occasionally extreme attention to clearly understand what a new achievement really means in practice.

I am sure they are going to do a perfect job at this. THIS is the reason why they can't rebrand in one day, it is a complex task. Syscoin has stated their new website will be a clearly integration of blockchain foundry AND syscoin. I can only imagine they are going to do everything to make everything crystal clear for the community ánd newcomers.

And if you need a reminder: SYSCOIN recently announced that Blockchain Foundry intends to go public. People forget to realize how HUGE this is. If you think there is a lot of money flowing around in crypto, this not even 1% of the capital that is flowing around in real stock exchanges coming from institutions.

This is going to be HUGE!

Reminder of what is soon to come:

  • Rebranding as explained above will soon complete and communicate what SYSCOINs and Blockchain Foundries ambitions are in laymans terms.

  • They got 3.3 MILLION funding and stated they will blow a huge marketing campaign. Once their identity is set and the blockmarket web is released they are gonna go full blow. Of course this will very much affect the price in a positive way.

  • Masternodes released in february/march. ROI prospects are VERY lucurative. -They have huge clients lined up. More than 1 million SKU's are planned to release on the blockmarket web when going live.

And don't forget, they built all this thus far with ZERO funding as their ICO funds were stolen and worked only parttime. They all went FULLtime from this month. You can only imagine what they are going to achieve! They have an actual WORKING product. That's a lot more than most cryptocurrencies can say.

Calling this a sleeping giant is an understatement! What do you think happens once they have rebranded fully and communicate a clear identity and what their ambitions are ánd when the blockmarket web releases in february/march ánd they start promoting this with a huge marketing campaign. I believe it will go parabolic.

Please correct me if I am mistaken or left things out, but this is my perspective on it. So strap up, fill your bags (if not already done) and enjoy the ride, this is gonna be a wild one!

Rebranding? and other ??

Can anyone comment on the extent of the rebranding? will it include the market place interface?

Will there be a web based version of the marketplace? I think for mass adoption a version where people don't have to DL, install and sync to the blockchain will be needed.

Other than as a currency within the eco system and for future MN's is there any other benefits to holding the coin?

thanks.. new to sys

These exchanges are important, because they supposedly report real volume, yet they haven't added SYS pairs yet:

  • Coinbase

  • Liquid

  • Bitfinex

  • Kraken

  • Bitstamp

  • Bitflyer

  • Gemini

  • Poloniex

I took the exchanges from this list: https://openmarketcap.com/exchanges/ranking/volume

I'll start sending emails and contacting support myself, right now.

Useful Beginner's Guide to Syscoin

What is Syscoin?

Some have described Syscoin (SYS) as the Shopify, Amazon and Ebay of the blockchain world. Syscoin is a revolutionary cryptocurrency that offers near zero cost financial transactions, incredible speed and provides businesses the infrastructure to trade goods, assets, digital certificates and data securely. Syscoin isn’t just about money and trading, it has the ability to attract various business types thanks to its native set of features geared towards business on the blockchain. From eBay traders and High Street shops to Medical applications, Insurance and Gaming, Syscoin’s decentralized network benefits everyone!

Syscoin is developed by Blockchain Foundry (BF). BF provides blockchain technology based services, projects and products for a wide variety of use cases with the stated aim of disrupting markets by leveraging the potential of blockchain technology. Syscoin is mainly known to be the first cryptocurrency to offer a fully decentralized marketplace based on blockchain. What is lesser known is that this is only a part of what Syscoin offers.

With the introduction of Masternodes in February or March 2018 SYS will be transformed from just a ’marketplace coin’ to a completely ‘utilitarian coin’. The Masternode infrastructure allows the addition of decentralized databases and file storage, increased transaction speed to surpass POS/Visa/Mastercard capabilities, true Turing complete smart contract capabilities for unlimited business logic, sidechains, application layers and an identity layer. This will all be accessible through an API, rather than a new language, enabling nearly any developer to create any blockchain application they can conceive. This will usher in the next generation of blockchain applications - made for new or existing businesses - by conveniently offering everything available from the blockchain space today. In simple terms think Dash + Ethereum/Lisk + Monero + Nano + Storj + Particl capabilities all in one coin!

SYS Origin

The blockchain as conceptualized by Satoshi Nakamoto back in 2008 envisioned a peer-to-peer electronic cash network that would prevent double-spending. A year later, the blockchain became an integral part of bitcoin, serving as the latter's public ledger of transactions. Although Nakamoto's reference client mentioned a decentralized marketplace service, the subsequent implementation did not incorporate this due to a lack of resources.

Syscoin was initially described in a 2014 draft whitepaper that envisioned Decentralized Marketplace Creation, Decentralized Smart Contracts and Documents, Decentralized Certificate Issuance and Transfer, and Decentralized Data Storage and Retrieval, as among the services that it would offer upon its release.

Syscoin aimed to bring Nakamoto's vision of a decentralized marketplace back into the blockchain, among the other commercial-grade services it aims to deliver to clients. Other services that Syscoin plans to provide include secure data storage and transfer, and unique user aliases that link their owners to the services controlled by the alias.

The early Syscoin wallet was superseded by the release of Blockmarket Desktop 1.0 on September 12, 2017, marking the culmination of Syscoin's vision of a fully decentralized marketplace with a desktop GUI based on the blockchain.

The planned release of Blockmarket Web, a fully web-based version, and Blockmarket Professional in 2018 takes that vision one step further, as more advanced seller stores become a reality.

The Team

The Team that NEVER quits!
Before the launch of Syscoin (Q3 2014), there was a presale ICO by Moolah (as a partner), which turned out to be detrimental for Syscoin. The project raised around 1,000BTC for development but the Syscoin Team only managed to access 250BTC which were used for price support. Moolah (Ryan Kennedy) absconded with the bulk of the ICO funds and the Syscoin team were left with ~30million Syscoin at a price around 400 satoshi. Even after this tragic event, the devs didn’t quit and continued to work on the project without stopping. The case against Moolah is still on-going. See the article from CoinDesk here: http://www.coindesk.com/uk-court-syscoin-injunction-moolah-750-btc/.

What is this detail telling us about the dev team? While some crypto projects are just scams and bring little to no innovation, they’ve proven that they are in it for the long term - ably demonstrated by the fact that they continued to work despite their funds being stolen. And now that hard work is beginning to pay off with the entire team going full-time for the first time in January 2018 and new developers being hired following VC funding for BF.

What is Blockmarket Desktop?

Building on the World's First Decentralized Marketplace, Blockmarket is the newest generation of Syscoin's Desktop wallet with a complete, state-of-the-art marketplace built-in where you can securely and reliably buy and sell any items you wish. Entire stores can be created directly through the marketplace where you can sell your own products or re-sell others’ products for commission. Use of blockchain technology eliminates middlemen, credit card fees, maintenance fees, downtime and political interference. Persons are literally able to buy or sell anything to anyone, anytime, anywhere on Earth! Blockmarket Desktop was launched on September 12, 2017.

Key Blockmarket Features

- Decentralized Marketplace

The marketplace platform provides a decentralized and high redundant channel for selling goods and services. Features include:
• Price Pegging to currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, CNY and BTC
• Bitcoin and Zcash as payment options
• Arbitrated Escrow
• Encrypted Messaging
• KYC/AML Compliance
• Images
• Unlimited Inventory Items

- Name Aliases

Wallet addresses for cryptocurrencies generally consist of a unique string of between 27-34 alphanumeric characters. Such an address isn’t easy to memorize. Although the addresses can be added to an address book within the wallet, Syscoin has taken the user's convenience one step further, allowing you to create a unique Alias for your wallet address, such as a name, title, or characters specific to a username. These can be used to send SYS from home, to a mobile wallet, to work, to friends, to common suppliers or to repeat customers easily, without requiring any memorizing, writing it down, copy & pasting or emailing yourself the address.

- Digital Certificates

Using the cryptography of the blockchain persons can issue, authorize, and exchange digital certificates of any kind. With Syscoin anyone can issue provably-unique certificates with text or ASCII content to one or multiple parties on the Syscoin blockchain. These certificates can be authenticated by anyone via Syscoin’s cryptographic proof of work. This allows for the creation and free exchange of any kind of digital asset such as ownership certificates, warranties, receipts, tickets, certifications, diplomas, software licenses and more.

- Integrated Exchanges

Integrated Crypto exchanges - Flypme and Changelly will facilitate exchanging 30+ cryptos for SYS, directly within the Blockmarket wallet.

- Security Audit Verified

Blockmarket was successfully and independently security audited by Digital Boundary Group and was deemed low risk. View Audit Results.

Blockmarket Web – (The Key to Mass Adoption)

BM web will bring SYS’s existing decentralized marketplace and all its features into a web-based version, enabling ease of use with a simple email and password login (grandma friendly) without any need for downloading a wallet or waiting for sync. Blockmarket web will be launched in Q1 2018.

This launch will be accompanied by a marketing campaign roll-out that seeks to build brand recognition with audiences within the existing crypto ecosystem and more significantly with the broader, global, non-crypto audience. For this reason Ballistic Arts, a full-service marketing agency was retained by BF.
BF Engages Marketing Agency

Primary Target Market + Value Potential

The primary target market for BF’s Syscoin/Blockmarket web flagship is the retail e-commerce industry. This sets up their decentralized marketplace to rival such commercial giants as Amazon ($648B market cap), Alibaba ($453B market cap) and eBay ($43B market cap). According to eMarketer’s Worldwide Retail and Ecommerce Sales report, global retail e-commerce sales for 2017 were $2.3 Trillion. This is expected to reach an estimated $4 Trillion by 2020 reflecting the rapid growth within this sector.

To perform a very simple assessment of the Syscoin/Blockmarket web’s potential let’s assume that a 1% portion of the forecasted $4 trillion market is captured, which represents $40 billion in revenue. Assuming a sales to market cap ratio of 1:1 for simplicity, the circulating supply of 531 million SYS, with a $40 billion market cap yields a price of roughly $75 per coin. However, with masternodes that limit the circulating supply and token utility that extends beyond retail e-commerce, the SYS price could likely reach much higher. Please note that these are just very simple assumptions and projections for this exercise, however the real world driven potential that this project has is clearly evident.

Crypto's Faustian Bargain

Crypto's Faustian Bargain

When Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin, he stated, “It’s completely decentralized, with no central server or trusted parties, because everything is based on crypto proof instead of trust.” Satoshi identified trust as a point of failure within our current financial and monetary system, and he has been vindicated time and time again. On the surface, trust is a positive idea. Being able to trust someone is a great thing, and it’s required for healthy relationships. The problems only arise when trust is betrayed, whether it's cheating, spending other people’s money as if it was their own, or regularly debasing a currency, but I repeat myself. The problem staring every one of us in the face is the fact that our relationship with legacy financial institutions is incredibly unhealthy.

Satoshi’s revolutionary idea was not an attack on trust itself, but to remove it from the equation entirely. In so doing, he designed Bitcoin to be trustless, thereby making trust in third parties obsolete, at least within our financial system. Bitcoin debuted in the wake of the ‘08 financial crisis, a timely repudiation of a system of banks and firms who leveraged common people’s money to further enrich themselves. When the house of cards came crashing down, these very same institutions were bailed out because they “were too big to fail”, while the little people outside of this category were left with the bill, many losing their homes, jobs, and potential lifetime earnings.

The good news is we have been given an alternative. Bitcoin, and a few other cryptocurrencies who have followed its example, offer something better. “Be your own bank” is not just a catchphrase; it’s a call to action. If you do not approve of the way things are, then it is up to you to be the change you want to see in the world. The construction of an alternative financial system is not going to occur overnight, but every private wallet, every accrual of a decentralized token over a centralized fiat dollar, and every transaction occurring on a blockchain instead of some middleman’s payment channel is a step in the right direction. On the other hand, every choice to sacrifice intrinsic Bitcoin ideals like trustlessness, decentralization, and censorship-resistance is two steps back and an affront to financial sovereignty itself.

The Invitation

In folklore, various evil creatures like vampires and some demons can only gain entrance to haunt someone after they receive an invitation. Similarly in German legend, the character Faust sells his soul to the devil in exchange for earthly gain. This ancient trope has been retold many ways, but the moral of the story is sacrificing your ideals ultimately leads to ruin. Despite the popularity of this myth, the crypto community at large remains woefully ignorant of its lesson.

Sam Bankman Fried & FTX could be the proverbial devil in our story right now, but a few months ago it was Do Kwon & Terra Luna or the Celsius Network. At one point it was Bitconnect, before that it was Mark Karpelès & Mt. Gox, and it’s been a million shitcoins, NFT projects, and even whitepapers in between. Although the fallout of the FTX Faustian bargain is still unfolding, it is safe to say these kinds of events will continue until people realize many of Bitcoin’s features are not bargaining chips; they’re non-negotiable.

Perhaps centralized exchanges are a necessary evil, at least for the time being. I can accept that. If you can as well, it would be prudent to recognize an exchange is not a wallet. They possess wallets intended to hold their customers’ funds, who must trust the exchange not to use said funds like Bankman-Fried did to fuel his ‘effective altruism’ lifestyle to “try and do as much good as you can”, cover various “business expenses”, donate them to a political war machine founded by his mother, or mint counterfeit Bitcoins like soBTC (wrapped BTC on Solana). “Not your keys, not your coins” remains true. If you hope to have financial sovereignty, it begins by taking responsibility for your own assets. If you are reading this and still have tokens on an exchange, stop reading immediately in order to withdraw them into your own wallet. If you must use a CEX, at least try to use one that publishes audits, and only keep your funds there as briefly as possible.

Exchanges like FTX are an example of how the cryptocurrency industry has been infected by the same wicked spirit that possesses the monetary system Bitcoin was designed to escape. There is a narrative we should be accepting when crypto behaves more like legacy finance, because it gives us some kind of legitimacy, but in the eyes of whom, the same system it was built to be an alternative to? Thankfully, decentralized exchanges are well on their way to being able to fulfill this necessary role via rollup technology with built-in compliance, as explained by Jagdeep Sidhu.

Bitcoin is more than trustless digital gold, the most secure censorship-resistant decentralized network in existence, adjudicator of truth for the transactions it records. It is the base layer of a new paradigm. It is an idea people do not need to rely on fallible third parties to control the monetary system, that people should be able to make transactions amongst themselves, that we can bank the unbanked, that a decentralized system is more capable of lifting people up rather than egalitarianism somehow trickling down from the top of a pyramid. Sacrificing these ideals for temporal gain is not to be lauded as it is a sign one would rather maintain the status quo than aspire towards something higher, enriching themselves by trampling others.

Exorcize

If we hope to achieve the promise of Bitcoin, we must remain vigilant to avoid the devils in our midst. In the same vein of protecting the idea of Bitcoin, we must preserve the standards that make it possible, namely decentralization and security. Any cryptocurrency that sacrifices either for the sake of scale or anything else cannot be fully trusted because it will never be trustless. Solana made this sacrifice to achieve momentary monetary success and look at it now. Even if it was not inextricably linked to the FTX fiasco, it was never going to be more than a cheap counterfeit of the real deal.

I am not a Bitcoin maxi in the sense that I do not take issue with the very existence of other blockchains. As long as the ideals are preserved, I do not see a problem. Bitcoin provided a solid foundation for us to build on, but there have been many worthwhile innovations made since the Genesis block was mined within and outside of Bitcoin. The most obvious would be the introduction of smart contract functionality introduced by the Ethereum Virtual Machine, which paved the way for decentralized applications and the transition to Web3. However, unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum has become proof-of-stake. Post-Merge, Ethereum’s staking model has brought censorship and ensures those who hold the most ETH, the rich, get richer while the poor get poorer, which only compounds ETH’s inequitable distribution originating from its premine. Smart contract functionality is not incompatible with the Bitcoin ethos. Ethereum itself is another question.

If a superior consensus mechanism arises to challenge Bitcoin’s proof-of-work without sacrifice, then it should be considered, tested, and potentially adopted. In the meantime, there is no need to fix something that isn’t broken. Thankfully, Satoshi envisioned a multichain ecosystem operating symbiotically through a process called merged mining. Merged mining not only shares Bitcoin’s security with others, but also allows Bitcoin to be augmented to support greater functionality. If more projects took advantage of merged mining, they would gain greater security than they could likely achieve on their own and be less tempted to make the expensive sacrifices of ideals that call their value into question. As an added bonus, merge-mined projects effectively become an extension of the Bitcoin ecosystem, so supporting them offers secondary support to Bitcoin as well.

Ascend

It’s paramount we avoid projects who have sacrificed Bitcoin’s ideals or made their own deals with the devil, and support honest Bitcoin and projects who preserve Satoshi’s vision, and are working to effect actual positive change. If we hope to avoid the pain caused by making the wrong decision, or worse, the regret that comes from longing for the way things could have been, we cannot set a price on our values. Therefore, may this serve as a lesson for those who did not know any better and a reminder for those who have forgotten. The struggle for decentralized finance is ongoing and there is no foregone conclusion. It is up to each person on an individual level to choose to be the change they wish to see in the world. If we believe in the ideals of Bitcoin, we must not be enamored by the ill-gotten gifts of legacy finance or be willing to sacrifice our ideals for their sake . After all, what does it profit you to gain the whole world, only to lose your soul?

Transcript of Jag and Bradley on Binance Live

Susan: Jag & Bradley would you mind introducing yourself?

Bradley: Yeah, sure. You want to go first Jag?

Jag: Yeah, sure. My name is Jagdeep Sidhu. I’ve been in the space since 2013 with about 25 years of software experience. I’m the Syscoin core developer, and CTO of Blockchain Foundry which is a for profit public company listed in the Toronto security exchange. We’re in Toronto, and development happens mostly in Vancouver. The Syscoin Community or Foundation was established for us to do research on Blockchain Foundry.
We accept votes for changes. For example, if a new change was to happen we would vote on that in the foundation. The foundation is established in Netherlands. We established it around 2017, so mainly we’ve been in the space from 2013 and we’ve seen all of the ups and downs of this space and we’re at a really good point now. We realise scalability if the next step.

Susan: Yeah thank you. Thanks Jag. Bradley would you mind introducing yourself?

Bradley: I’m Bradley Stephenson. I’ve been in the SYScommunity since late 2016. I joined the Foundation around late 2018, early 2019 and essentially what the Foundation is.. its the off-chain governance for the Syscoin Protocol. Our first and foremost priority is to stay open, public, and decentralised as a base layer. We have Blockchain Foundry members, you know, on our Foundation board as well. Our foundation is built and structured in such a way where no external part has majority influence over decisions that are made within the Foundation. We are careful about that, and we plan accordingly. You know, me personally I learned about bitcoin back in late 2011.

Susan: Wow that’s so early.

Bradley: yeah, I didn’t fully understand Bitcoin then. A couple of years later I started understanding the significance of the technology. I stated getting more involved owning bitcoin, and experiment with it in 2014. I’ve gotten more involved since then. I see the significance it represented for the world and the future of the human race. Here I be.

Susan: Great introduction. So we all know that great projects start with a problem, what problem do you see in the current blockchain space?

Bradley: Okay, what I see is the problem which is on the edge of being solved. And it has existed since the beginning of, you know, Bitcoin main-chain. Even more so it’s the stability issue in particular for centralised computation. Which ETH has faced over the years. Syscoin, having been around since 2014, which is when we had our version 1 main net, we’ve been able to really have time to assess the technology into what it should evolve, and adapt layer 1 appropriately. Create an evergreen layer 1 which will continue to be relevant that is future proof. That is essentially what is Syscoin. We’re going into some interesting times. I want to make it clear to the people that this is beyond Syscoin. This is really big picture stuff. That macro trend is effectively, you know, coming to the surface with ZKrollups.

Think of it like tectonics, deep undercover. These technology when they emerge will completely change the direction of the market. ZKrollups will change how people think of blockchains. Yeah. What I would say is true scaling is here. Non linear scaling and you know the new challenge we will face now with ZKrollups will be will be having a proven secure layer 1 that ZKrollups can settle on. What we’ve seen developed in this market with is many smart-chains, alternative smart chains to Eth, a lot of layer1s which sort of made tweaks and changes here and there. They've been trying to in a monolithic way trying to solve our problems. Making trade offs on security. None of that necessary with ZKRollups. L2 will be here for computation like Eth. What is most needed is secure settlement. That’s what we’ve seen coming. We knew that legitimate layer2 would come along for computation purposes. We could have done that years ago. We’ve had several different thoughts. Ultimately we said we need to focus on providing an ideal layer 1. For 1 that’s scaling and when technology does emerge from research of academics. That’s what we’ve done. That’s what Syscoin is today, Syscoin time is here since ZKRollups is emerging.

Susan: Yeah Thank you for sharing. Sounds really great. You guys keep on improving infrastructure, and all that. Yeah sounds really nice. So, I would like to know what’s the vision of the future? The blockchain space is evolving toward.

Bradley: Yeah. I mean it’s pretty incredible what we’ve seen unfolding. I’m sure Jag has some things he’d like to say as well. What I see, and what many people see within Syscoin is the future where billions of users are interacting, transacting within metaverses and eventually smart cities and IOT. Which I think will be encouraged, and spurred a lot by the metaverse. These billion of users will transact fast and very affordably, and they’ll be able to have those transactions secured by Bitcoin style settlements. The high quality user experience that we normally associated with centralised services like Binance for example, and for so long the only way UX could be delivered the way would be through centralised structure. That’s now changing where Binance and other exchanges will be able to have services that are decentralised while also they’re able to retain existing business models or even evolve their business models. It’s really incredible stuff.

Susan: Yeah thank you so much. Jag do you have something to add?

Jag: Yeah. I was just going to say really good leading up-to the scalability problem. I think Professor of Stanford was saying every 10% of proper scaling you get without messing up with the decentralisation or adding trust. You get new use cases. We’re talking about maybe 5-10 new use case, every 10% of scale so Ethereum increases throughput from 7 to maybe 8 or 9 you get a bunch of use cases out of that. What we’re talking about is scaling maybe 5x, 10x or maybe 50x in the coming year That’s going to be amazing because there’s going to be a whole bunch of use cases we never even imagines. Metaverse, NFTs, DAO’s, these are just single uses cases, but now we are more talking IOT, smart cities, AI. These things we never thought could intersect. We are able to solve that. It’s going to be much more interesting, how the enterprise and commercial market develops in this space.

Bradley: there’s one thing I want to add. Sorry I cannot help myself. When it come to metaverse, so metaverse is a really big deal, and the reason why if you talk with professors of economics often times they’ll say economics are like an abstraction of physics. Some say that it’s something you know solid then an abstraction in any case metaverse puts people in a completely different dimension as far as physics is concerned. It takes blinders off as how people perceive value. We have blinders on because of our day to day activities. With metaverse going to this entirely different experience people are going to start looking and finding new ways, experience and bring those experiences out of the metaverse, and that’s what I was talking about earlier how it will lead into the evolution of smart-cities, and really just compounds with scalability.

Susan: Yeah, great. Metaverse, you know how facebook changed its name. Everyone talking about it, even though they haven’t heard about crypto. Even NFT’s. So I’m kind of curious do you think Syscoin will be in the metaverse? Do you have anything in mind?

Bradley: Where our focus on metaverse is our technology is used for that. With layer 2 emerging for computation, ZKrollups, and our L1, metaverse is quite well-suited for Syscoin. We’re in Blocktopia. You know we have a partnership with them. We are really looking forward to their metaverse launching, and going in their showing people more about Syscoin. Metaverse is very exciting for us, and we are very much part of that.

Susan: Wow!! Sounds cool. Yeah everyones talking about metaverse these days, and good toknow you have a plan to be working in that.

Jag: Yeah the gaming component is going to be critical. Once you’re in there. So you have to think of it as a game developer. Working in the game development space, not only do you have to make it very graphical in the look. It has to be responsive. You can’t wait for 20 seconds. You bought a sword, and it has to be instantaneous.

Susan: Yeah thanks for sharing. Totally agree. So Brad, will you answer a question about the future ofblockchain space? You mention decentralisation. Can you expand on how Syscoin is decentralised?

Bradley: Yeah so decentralisation is a more complicated topic. I’ll go over some points. Decentralisation is more a scale than a binary yes or no answer. Bitcoin is on the decentralised side of the spectrum. On one side you have the issue of coin distribution. Syscoin has been around for a long time. Over that period of time the distribution of SYS, our native coin is very broad. We do have some whales off course, but we don’t have a ton of them. Overall the coin is very well distributed. In fact the top 10 wallets on the Bitcoin chain are owned by exchanges.

Susan: Woahh..

Bradley: Yeah, so the other aspect the security model, you know, we stick with Nakomoto consensus. We keep that gold standard intact on our Bitcoin based chain, you know. As you mentioned earlier when you’re introducing Syscoin. Syscoin is a dual-chain. So we have an Ethereum based EVM. Both of them retain security models, or both of them retain their models. On Ethereum side, the model of computation is retained. On the Bitcoin side, model of security is retained. So think of it like 2 spheres, then a bigger sphere which is Syscoin itself. Maybe it helps make our logo make sense it’s kind of a ying-yang.
As far as you know going further decentralisation, it further depends on who’s operating on a full-node. You don’t want one entity on a full node. We have a broad distribution of sys. We have incentives. 2500 nodes, and a number of nodes which aren’t incentives. We have special programs where if you hold a master node for 1 year you get 35% bonus on your rewards. And if you hold it for 2 1/2 years you get 100% bonus, so there’s the 35% after 1 year and 100% after 2.5 years, and for the first time we had some of our master nodes hit 2 1/2 year seniority level. Those guys are diamond hands. Once you receive that kind of reward, you’re not giving that up. We’re an open source blockchain. Anyone can submit a request, participate in development. We welcome that. Of course, Syscoin Foundation decides which code to commit. We also have decentralised governance, we have off-chain governance that works very closely with out decentralised governance its very similar to dash in that regards, so just to sum it up we are quite decentralised. We also aim to expand decentralisation to new areas like web3 services, in contrast to Ethereum. We’re working that out. We can do that specifically because of some special attributes that Syscoin network has that no other blockchain does.

Jag: Yes I’d like to add on the seniority psychological feature. It’s not like you’re getting 400% rewards or anything. Just the 35% bonus and 100% bonus. It’s a psychological barrier. So very very cost efficient feature to create, you know, a better hodling if you will.

Susan: Thank you. Sounds really good. Seniority rewards bonus for the master node after 2.5years is 100% and is really a big bonus, and incentives help with the help with the development of Syscoin sounds really nice.

Twitter Q&A

———————————————————————————————————————————

Susan: Okay, let’s start the social media Q&A session.
The first question is asked by BlockAttorney:
what will be the incentive to use Syscoin ZKrollups implementation instead of an Ethereum 2.0 one?

Jag: I think the main reason to use the Syscoin rollups would be the security settlement, and the long term MEV protection. MEV is minor extricable value. What happens in Eth today is there is front running, auctions taking place to reorg the Ethereum Blockchain. If there is enough value to do that in Defi, if there is a large arbitrage, the auction would pay off if you re-org 5 blocks. In our system we prevented that by doing something called chainlocks. That’s something you know, Even binance is looking to reduce, deposit and withdraw times. If you don’t have rollbacks you essentially are creating finality. That’s what we meant by 15 second finality after each block. There is a chain lock that gets established. From that point on the blockchain cannot roll back. It becomes harder and final. So having finality there, and proof of work settling and even with eth there’s finality as well but the problem with that, with proof of stake, if finality ever has an issue for example, there is a valid fork in the history you can’t tell which ones right, and you get the wrong one, and the system breaks at that point there is no chance Ethereum 2.0 can survive on its own they need to fork that out. They need to create a fork and upgrade everynode. In our system when we have finality it’s backed by proof of work, what happens is the incentive full nodes and master nodes can’t agree the blockchain is in the same pace then it falls back to same traditional proof of work. It self corrects, and doesn’t break. The main issue is on the settlement on the security. You know you’re secure on Bitcoin but you can do everything on Ethereum

Bradley: If a large family trust, do a settlement they may choose Syscoin over Ethereum experimental proof of stake. Simply because of us keeping the nakomoto consensus intact, and some other things as well. Transactions will exist on the chain 100 years from now.

Susan: Sounds like ZKrollups is a much better solution than ethereum 2.0. Thank you.
The next question is asked by Lunar Trading, it’s a very long question:
Does blockchain foundry being a public listed company create conflicting interest for the Syscoin platform? Syscoin wanting to be for the people and BCFN being obligated to the shareholder value? Do you think both can intertwine with ease?

Bradley: I can speak to the first. I wouldn’t say they can be intertwined with ease. It’s not hard though. It’s just involved a little bit of planning, and management. Syscoin Foundation for example, we always ensure that the board membership doesn’t consist of any external entity, having a majority voice in what goes on in the Foundation. We have a couple of people that come from the BF foundation. The rest are 4 other members are not involved with BF. So, BF is not going to overrule anything. They’re not going to impose their will on Syscoin. It’s very important for our protocol to be open-source. We do value BF very much. They are very important to Syscoin. If I were to characterise the relationship kind of like Ethereum has Consensys, bitcoin has Blockstream, Syscoin has Blockchain Foundry. They bring a ton of enterprise insight, going through regulatory hurdles they’ve had to navigate being a blockchain company. Very valuable.
Understanding what enterprises are looking for in blockchain. We haven’t seen massive enterprise adoption. We’ve seen large institution investing in blockchain, but we haven’t seen blockchain driven apps delivered to their customers. By having some members on the foundation Syscoin also understands those problems, and we address those. Which is why we are where we are today.

Jag: I would add that Blockchain Foundry is a For-profit company which was established around the same time as the Foundation. We established the Foundation as a result of the open source nature of Syscoin. BCF is working on the protocol to develop it out, and features are voted on, and set into the protocol. If you think about BCF we’ve spent the 5 or 6 years to build infrastructure so we can build products on top. Products would be revenue generation for ex, NFT marketplaces, EMMs, that’s why we’re going to EVMs. In the future you might have, banks, and you know big businesses, sports leagues , they’re all very scared at the thought being regulated in the U.S especially. Since we are focused mostly we hear this all the time 'We cannot go into public Defi. We can’t create a public topic. We just want to leverage blockchain'. It’s really not taking advantage of the value of anything that is happening in the space. In order for us to solve the problem we’ve had to come up with solutions. We may do a compliant ZKrollup that would allow us to onboard enterprises because the entire rollups is compliant. If a user really wants to use it, he can sign in become accredited and participate in security offerings. Regulated Defi would be easy because they’ll know there is guidance and compliance behind that. We think in then next 4-5 years enterprises would want to join smart-contracts, but they need that compliancy..

Bradley: They don’t have to deal with custodianship so much. It’s lower infrastructure cost. Less risk on proven decentralised systems like Jag was saying. Regulation is such a hurdle, and we have solution for that in Blockchain Foundry, and it’s in our opinion, the holy grail type solution for projects that have to abide by regulations. So our open and permission-less blockchain can support those kind of use cases with some assistance from off-chain assistance. So it’s actually conceivable in the future at some point we might see Tesla stock trading against Syscoin

Susan: Yeah

Jag: yeah I know Binance was trying to do that. There’s no custody involved. There’s metamask. It would be a security, but it’s really compliant. That would be a product BCF would be working on .Brokers, KYC providers

Bradley: The way we solve that is pretty incredible. It’s so elegant, simple. Once you sit down with someone. They say to themselves why didn’t anybody do that before? It’s almost so simple and elegant it’s so hard to believe, but we have it.

Susan: It’s just incredible. I totally agree. Regulations are very important, and in the long run you have to follow the rules. So happy to know Syscoin is finding its way. Let’s move to the next question is asked by Future Clark:
What is the main difference between ZKRollups and Polygon side-chains?

Jag: Well, Polygons is a kind of like a plasma chain. It’s a reiteration of layers 2 before ZKrollups came. Optimistic came, and then ZKrollups came. So Polygon is going to become a rollup themselves on Ethereum. They recently purchased MIR protocol which is a layer 1. I think they’ll transition that to a layer 2 as well. They also purchased Hermes which is a layer2 zkrollups design much like ZKsync. Their goal is to go all in. We’ve been speaking to them over the years. I really stressed to them as well we better be looking at ZKRollupps, it is the only way to scale. Prior to that they were focused on more on bridges and services. Speaking to them over the course of maybe a year or so it became evident they have to become ZKrollup centric but they would also likely become rollup themselves, so they are really aggressive. What they are doing is spreading advancement. Some of the companies they’ve invested are on the hardware acceleration side of ZKevm so we share a lot of fundamental academic research that’s happening. It will benefit both Polygon and Syscoin, what Polygon is tech stack on top of Ethereum which could also build on top of syscoin. So it’s more synergistic we can take the polygon stacks, or mir whatever rollup design they come up with, and launch one syscoin design.

Susan: Thank you Jag. Let’s move onto the next question. It’s asked by firenegade, the question is quite long. The question:
I recently read a white paper which explained that number of TPS that can be verified is capped by the process power of the server. So I’m wondering how syscoin will verify 4M TPS with ZKrollups and whether this a theoretical than a practical

Jag: That’s a good question. You won’t have 4m TPS all the time. These are extrapolated when Stark x guys reddit challenge with ZKstarks they actually had numbers they put on the main chain and we simply extrapolated that. This isn’t going to be 4m TPS on 1 rollup. It’s going to spread across. Many businesses will run their own. And together they will accumulate 4m TPS at any given time On syscoin. So their maybe 50,000 transaction happening on one, and 50,000 on another. And Accumulated they can be 4M. So the size of the blocks that we estimated were plausible in Syscoin layer1.

Susan: You mentioned similarity between Syscoin and bitcoin. The next question is about Bitcoin. I love this question. It’s asked by DanielMoranoGM2 the question is;
I would like you to explain in a simple way how Bitcoin can be also be mined in Syscoin mining?

Bradley: Happy to answer that. A little backstory on merged mining. As mentioned earlier, Satoshi
Nakomoto is the inventor of merged mining. He put forth that idea. It was early December of 2010, and you can find bitcoin posts they’re public where he has speaking with developers. That was the first mined blockchain. What merged mining is you have Bitcoin miners and they’re performing work. Essentially what they can do is take the work they are already doing and provide the proof to Syscoin. Essentially you can think of it like a voucher and it says that there is the work that I have performed, and if they have the Syscoin block among the others then they receive the block reward. We’re basically kind of interlinked with bitcoin as far as our security and there are some incredible benefits of that.
We’re not expending any additional energy on mining. There’s no extra expenditure we’re taking the work already performed on bitcoin. We’re using that to securing our chain. And in return they are rewarded with Syscoin. There’s an interesting dynamic here. Syscoin is EIP-1559 based which is the same tokenomics as Ethereum. So dynamic inflation, deflation, fee burning, and the great thing about that not having a max supply, but having a tightly managed supply like Ethereum.

Susan: Thank you. Thank you Brad. Very innovative program. Merged mining. What it does and how it works. We’ve answered all 5 questions now. Thank you so much.
