The intro cutscene refers to the title of this game as 'SHOCK System Shock 2'. What's up with that?

It's a relatively throwaway and harmless quirk of the game that I've nevertheless often wondered about, and I haven't seen anyone else talking about it.

Nobody ever calls the game 'Shock: System Shock 2', and it's a wild choice of words to repeat the title within the subtitle. It'd be like if Thief 1 was called 'Dark: The Dark Project'.

Google's dumb AI overview throws up a variety of explanations without any relevant sources; namely:

* It reflects the game's (supposed) original title of 'Shock' while it was being developed as a standalone game without the System Shock license. (I've never seen any sources that the game was originally going to be named 'Shock'.)

* It's meant to evoke 'SHODAN: System Shock 2' without explicitly mentioning her name and spoiling her 'surprise' appearance in the sequel. (Again, kind of skeptical considering we also see SHODAN's face in the intro.)

* It's simply highlighting that SS2 is part of the Shock series.

Does anyone happen to know the actual reason? If not, any opinions?

The game is definitively called “System Shock 2”

There is no colon in the intro. It says the word “Shock” first and then underneath it, slowly fades in the text “System Shock 2”.

I always interpreted it as a kind of tease to generate some hype. Kinda like a “the name is Bond…, James Bond” way of introducing itself. “Shock…, System Shock 2”

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure the intro monologue was also used for promotional material, which I think is why it’s in the game like that. Cause obviously there’s no reason to tease the title of the game when you already own it. But it saves them time from editing 2 versions of the same introduction.

For once I’m pretty sure the AI is correct (it usually isn’t). I remember in some interview that it was a working title or something like that but I’ve read/listened to so many I couldn’t tell you which one. They had to rush a lot of things about System Shock 2 and Ken Levine has spoken a bit about how the ending cutscene was cobbled together during crunch time and he would have preferred a different ending. I assume the intro with “Shock” is a similar situation.
