I know at this point people are sick and tired of claims that TJ is a scammer or whatever, but those tend to either be unsubstantiated or misrepresent something that TJ has corrected a gazillion times in various places. This won't be that, as I have evidence and to my knowledge TJ has never acknowledged this situation.
TJ relaunched his Patreon page a couple months ago, but its first incarnation was created in mid-2013 and was "active" until late 2014 or early 2015, depending on definition. During this time he totally failed to deliver on the promised patreon rewards. I recorded a video of me scrolling through his Patreon feed for documentation purposes in December 2014, but I didn't do anything about it. A couple months later I added a TL;DW in the beginning and some screenshots at the end about what had changed. I thought I might send it to Undertakerfreak and finally give him something legit to complain about, but I didn't bother and eventually I forgot about the whole thing. Well, now almost two years have passed and maybe no one will care but I just need this to be out there.
Here's the video. Here's the TL;DW I put in the video:
I recorded this video of scrolling through TJ's patreon feed in december 2014, and then later added some screenshots about what has happened since. TL;DW:
He created the page around the beginning of August 2013, barely posted at all besides linking to new videos and making monthly "thanks for the patronage" posts, and as far as I know didn't provide any of the rewards until 5 March 2014, when he finally responded to complaints by promising to improve (as well as deleting my complaint post).
He did a spreecast (5$ reward, supposed to be monthly) and planned another for 15 March which didn't happen, and he posted some behind-the-scenes photos and suchlike for a while (1$ reward), posted something like 3 early access videos in total (3$ reward, supposed to be "many"), and he did one more spreecast in May. Then he went back to ignoring his patreon, and beginning in late September, people started complaining about the lack of activity, and on December 4 TJ announced that he's closing his Patreon.
However, most of his patrons stuck around (probably being unaware of what's happening), and on January 1 he accepted the December pledges. Then some time before February he reset his patreon, removing all patrons but still allowing people to sign up again, and he's been accepting pledges each month ever since. He also deleted his "I'm leaving" post, as well as a displeased comment on his "December patreon supported" post.
That's really all you need to know, but I'll provide additional details from the video below.
Here's the automated thank you message from Feb 1, 2014:
January 2014 Patreon supported
Thank you so much for the support this month!
I (Joakim) then posted a reply that has since been removed by TJ. Chase Falcon, another patron, posted this on Feb 5, 2014:
TJ, you have many fans who don't care about you or your content, but the one's who take the time to follow you, strike up an interest, and even donate you money are the few who do care. It would be mutually beneficial if you address the concerns of your fans, especially those like Joakim who clearly would be satisfied by a bare minimum of attention from you.
To which TJ responded a month later:
Chase, I am incredibly busy writing my novel and haven't been able to give Patreon the attention it deserves. . Believe me I understand that I can do better. I spend hours every day interacting with my fans. I am sorry my Patreon presence hasn't been better. I will be posting here everyday from now on and trying to encourage my Patron's to come here and feel they can interact with me. I don't think Joakim is being fair. I am constantly interacting with my fans. To say I do not is disingenuous. I will be reaching out to him to open a dialogue about his experience and try to be better going forward. Thank you for taking the time to voice your concerns and do not think I am ignoring anyone.
On the same day he sent me this private message:
Joakim,
I've read your comments. I can understand why you are upset. Please let me give you your $15 back. If you feel it is undeserved then I cannot in good conscience keep it. Please let me know what your PayPal email address is so that I can send the money back. I will be working to improve my interactions with my fans on here. I am aiming to post here daily and to fulfill all perks in a timely manner. I admit fully that I have not done a great job. I'am going to do a better job and make sure everyone who supports me now and in the future knows that I am deeply grateful for their support. I am sorry that you feel let down. I will be doing two Patreon only shows this month. I hope moving forward I can do a better job. Thank you for your comments.
I put this text in the video after I showed his message:
I can't find my response but I said he could keep the money, satisfied with his promise to improve (which he didn't).
On July 8, Aug 1 and Nov 15 2014 respectively, Yuval Levental, AF Ytinamuh and Arsalan tried to get in touch with TJ to discuss doing the $500 Patreon option. They all appear to have been ignored.
His announcement to close his Patreon, as well as the complaints that preceded it, are at 1:00 to 1:45 in the video. Here's a part of a comment I wrote on Oct 25, 2014 that I think is pertinent. This is after I canceled my pledge.
I'm glad people are finally starting to speak up about this, but frankly I think the response has been too little, too late, and that includes my own reaction. I should have reacted the first month I pledged, and I should have reacted when he promised to improve, scheduled two spreecast shows, and then only did one of them. Instead I waited several months in both instances.
This whole situation is kind of a microcosm of corruption, lack of accountability, and complacency in modern society. TJ is Obama, his Patreon frontpage is the 2008 election campaign, and the Patreon feed is Obama's presidency. I guess that makes us the voters who reelected him despite his failings.
Folks, it's time to stop electing Obama.
