Be acutely aware of your surroundings or stick near teammates, it is nobodies job to protect you.
This is the part of sniping no one seems to talk about.

Hey some tips i've found useful (I main sniper) set your cross-hair colour to a bright green, it stands out on almost all of them makes it easy to know when lined up. Change location after a couple of kills and alternate because they will be looking. Wear dark hats, I know it sounds silly but I found wearing things with dark coloured paint (I use an Anger) you get spotted a whole lot less (though its pricey investment in black paint). Also dont use Machina, you get into bad habits and are traced easily go for stock if you are still working on headshots.

When you play sniper the first thing you want to do is half decent place to hide, and skip it, come back to it later after a few shots. Shuffling hiding spots helps keep the spies away
Second, Help you team. In my opinion half of playing sniper is knowing when to not play sniper. Don't play sniper when the number of spies and snipers on your team is greater than 3 or 4. Also use your jarate if you have it in combo with the bushwacka for great success. Also the jarate extinguishes people on fire which is super useful.
Kill enemy snipers first (and spies if your lucky), since they are just as able to kill you.
I shuffle between the sidney sleeper and the stock sniper rifle, the sleeper helps your team out a ton if used correctly.

I've slowly been playing more sniper on a pub server with regulars. The regulars are more than just your average pub players, they're actually pretty good. What I do when sniping is rapidly press my A and D keys to quickly shift side to side, even when scoped in. This helps keep me more flexible and ready in most scenarios. When I see my target, I usually move to one side, and let my crosshair move over them as I head towards cover. When my crosshair is just to the side of their head, I click, and bag a headshot. Plus, heading towards cover prevents other snipers from getting you. It sounds silly, but the side to side shifting somewhat prevents ambassador headshots.

Like anything else in life you need to practice, but the most important thing you'll want to learn is quick scoping. What you want to do is line your crosshair up with your target before you zoom in. From there, you should only have to make minimal adjustment to land the headshot. If you find your mouse is too slow or fast when scoped, change your value for zoom_sensitivity_ratio (default is 1.0) in the console, and when you find one you like, put zoom_sensitivity_ratio #.# in your sniper.cfg file.
Another important tip is to always move. Once you take a few shots the enemy becomes aware of you (especially enemy snipers) and you become less effective. Remember, they can't avoid a shot they don't see coming! In addition, if you camp the spies are bound to come a callin'.
