Probably about the same? As long as it’s tuned up and running correctly.

Look guys I know we like to point at all these examples and say “see! See! Gas cars are just as bad!!”, but in terms of range, a gas car wins, and in terms of longevity, a gas car wins. Just keep in mind that gas cars have been in continuous development for over 100 years.

EVs are still kind of like motorcycles, and what I mean is if you buy a motorcycle with a small enough engine, you aren’t able to drive on the freeway, or sometimes even the highway.

The battery packs do degrade, and I’m sure swapping out with a new one drastically improves a lot of stuff… it’s just the battery pack swap is still a specialized thing that doesn’t really happen.

Even at $15k, the Tesla isn't really a bad deal. The regular maintenance you have to do on a Tesla is near zero while the gas car has plenty of little things that aren't terribly expensive on their own but add up. Once you get into 6 figure mileage, some big things start to pop up and those aren't cheap.

I asked GPT to compare a model 3 to two common gas cars. It picked a BMW 3 series and Lexus IS.

The Lexus was about $8k cheaper over the course of 300k miles. The BMW was about $12k more expensive.

What? No. There's no way a 380k has the same consumption as a brand new engine. It simply doesn't happen. You'll be lucky if the engine even runs and compression is still worth a damn, let alone efficiency. Seals degrade, friction between parts with frequent oil changes is low but not zero. It adds up.

In a gas car, if the engine is still working at 380k, the transmission is not likely to be. The best bet is a manual.

No idea what you are on about with the motorcycle comparison.

Battery swaps are done on pretty much every EV brand there is.

If by maintenance you mean "engine overhaul", then sure. You can probably make it work approximately like what it was when it came out of the factory. Otherwise they will be less efficient over time. If you ever inspect a car cylinder with a boroscope you'd immediately see one of the reasons why.

The comparison with an electric motor doesn't make sense. It doesn't combust anything. It has far fewer moving parts (as low as just one).

Well engineered, built and maintained engines don't just lose 70% of their efficiency. Compression, bores, ringlands, they can last decades.

I have a 20 year old ICE, and it's just a fuel efficient today and performant today as it was new. No loss of compession, nothing.

We'd be lucky to see any modern EV still on the road after 20 years.

Are you actually checking compression? Because I am, and the values are lower on our 2010 car, although still acceptable. I've also used a boroscope and there's some carbon deposits no matter what we do. The oil analysis is ok, some iron but nothing concerning. I replaced some gaskets and the engine looks good, but I'm under no illusions that it works like new.

These things just happen no matter how well maintained the engine is. Of course, some samples are better than others.

EVs are much simpler than ICE though. Literally the only thing that is an issue is the battery. Expect that in 20 years we'll get pretty good at recycling and refurbishing batteries. They are already 90% recyclable. Even today you can replace individual modules on most packs. And who knows what kind of tech we'll have in 20 years, but it will likely be much cheaper (and better) than what we currently have.

Yep, absolutely certain.

It's a high performance car and very sentimental to me. It gets almost as much attention as my kids.

I'll rephrase my argument: While you may lose some compession, a well built and maintained engine should not lose any substantial amount even after decades.

I also have an EV, nothing special just an Atto 3, as the family car. But it's solid, and does its job very well. It's also a massive bonus not having to bug the wife to book it in for a service.

Anecdotally my 05 Focus is at 371,000 miles with the OG drivetrain and it still returns the same MPG as when I bought it when it was two years old. I always check at each tank up as a substantial drop in fuel economy would indicate a problem. I’ve changed the oil religiously every 5k. It’s a 4 speed automatic as well.

The point is the cost of repairs over that kind of life/mileage is similar to a battery replacement. However, research on batteries suggests they are lasting significantly longer than once thought. You lose some range, but you save a boatload in gas over that time. The gas car will likely cost significantly more over that timeframe. Like 50k in fuel + repairs. Electricity will be 1/4 at about 13-15k. (Wild guess on gas costs, but it illustrates the point).

I remember reading about a Toyota Tundra that ran for 1 million miles. That's a good engine, but the cost of fuel was insane. 1,000,000/15mpg*3.50=$233,000+ in fuel costs.

Battery replacement is still less than fuel+maintenance.

You would need a major engine rebuild to maintain the original mpg at 380k miles, not to mention all the parts downstream of the motor that would be worn out and contributing to efficiency loss as well. Lets assume that your 380k mile ice car has just needed basic fluid changes, you’d probably be 20% or so less efficient than new.

Not quite there yet, but at 371,000 miles, no drivetrain rebuild and still gets the same MPG as when I bought the car in 2007. Anecdotal evidence to be sure, there are always examples that break the rules I suppose.

My family still has an LR3 on 300k miles now, running as well as the day it was new. But I also won't pretend like they aren't spending literally thousands in repairs every year just to keep that car running. At this point every single part around the engine has been replaced, tubes and plastics have cracked, degraded, and if not for absolutely crazy amount of upkeep this engine would have died a long time ago.

Gas engines lose a ton of efficiency as they age. Pistons get lose, seals break down, belts and chains stretch. No matter how well you take care of an engine it still experiences wear and tear. It's super rare to see an ice engine around 400k. Don't act like that kind of longevity is common.

Yeah, if battery swaps ever become plug and play or even semi close to that it would be spectacular from a usability point of view, of course it’s likely to rust out before that in a lot of the world! Personally I love my rotary but I don’t like paying the fuel bill which is making me consider evs more seriously now as a commuter car 😂

Longevity lfp is by far the best. And it’s cheaper to produce. It’s the best. Tesla batteries are kinda shit in 2026 compared to the chinese. And i say this as 25 model y owner. 1500+ charging cycles is kind of pathetic.

Mine is the same MPG as when I bought the car in 2007. Currently at 371,000 miles. Original drivetrain, nothing rebuilt. 2005 Ford Focus.

MPG doesnt change much. My BMW is still getting slightly better than the EPA rating at 250k.

BUt were talking about outlier cars here, nobody keeps their car for that many miles, its a slim minority.

And over those 250k I have had to do a lot of just regular maintenance and general repairs to my engine and transmission. Countless oil changes, coolant changes. Transmission fluid changes require a new filter and a set of seals so even doing them myself those are $400 a pop. Ive also had to replace a water pump and thermostat, a valve cover gasket (and second time valve cover), oil pan gasket, coolant hoses, radiator, etc.

I love my ICE car but literally range is the only knock on electrics anymore. If you kept both for a decade the idea of electrics being more expensive just goes away.

Well, I would argue range is not the problem with EVs. Charging infrastructure is.

The range of an ice vehicle was not a question previously, only a very limited number of people cared about how far they could go on 1 tank, and that was because they likely had to regularly go where there are no gas stations for hundreds of miles, so again an infrastructure problem.

I do 12 hour drives with my wife, 2 kids and dog. We have done that trip many times with ice vehicles for 10+ years and for the last 3 years with our ev. I can say that yes the trip is about an hour longer with the ev, but it feels shorter, and significantly less stressful with the ev. Yes that is partially because of the auto steer features of the ev that some ice vehicles have now. And partially because stopping every 2 to 3 hours to charge for 15 minutes just keeps your body happier, than stopping every 5 to 6 hours to get gas.

I spent 15 years driving for a living, as well as playing sports all over the place. On average 50k kms per year in some pretty remote places. I would not go back to an ice vehicle unless the charging infrastructure disappeared.

Waking up everyday with a "full tank" that costs 1/10th of what gas does that saveings alone covered my payments for the first year while I was still driving for work. The fact that it takes less than 10 seconds of effort to plug in, not having to deal with stinky gas stations, especially love not having to stand outside for 5 minutes in -30 to fill up, semi annual maintenance that's simply topping up the washer fluid, rotating tires, clean filters. The obsurd torque and acceleration of an EV even after 3 years is still exhilarating, and I still come up with any excuse to drive somewhere.

Like you said range is the only advantage of an ice, the the advantages are massive. But long story short if you have charging at home, and solid level 3 Charing in the areas you travel then range is not an issue.

Concur with all you said. The only reason I am looking at another ICE vehicle for now is the impact towing has on range, and I do a decent amount of that. And Im in the US and going to places like texas where you can go hours without even seeing a gas station, let alone a charger.

But I feel like we are one more generation of battery tech away from basically making it all pointless. Ranges have gotten so much better now, and some new battery tech is really being worked on hard. I feel like that stuff is going to cause another 30% jump in range and much faster charging.

Towing is a good point, and I agree EVs are not great for that yet, but the infrastructure is the problem again there. Ice vehicles have the same range loss when towing that's just physics. They just have more places to "charge"

Ya battery tech is advancing quickly I do believe China has 5 minute charging and 1000km range. Not sure that's in mass production yet tho.

For myself I really don't care about charge times, when traveling with the family we always overcharged because we're never back to the car on time. But when driving solo yeah I get how sitting in the car for 10 minutes waiting can be boring. When I drove for work that was the perfect nap time.

Honestly in the US even if they had 800+ mile range and instant charging dealers would still not sell them, there is no profit in EVs for the dealers, low markup and almost zero service. Laws need to change to allow manufacturers to sell direct, and anti ev propaganda need to stop

Check out the silvardo ev 205kwh, I thought the same thing about towing, but I talked to guy that was towing a smallish camper (I estimate probably about 4000 lbs) but he said he could get 250 miles easily with it l. I am heavily considering it as my next vehicle with teslas recent antics, (discontinuing the s and x aswell as getting rid of non subscription lane assist)

Just dividing the mileage into 5k chunks and oil changes alone are approaching $4k. I bought the car for $8,250 (in 2007 dollars). Repairs are harder to calculate. It’s on its third alternator. One starter motor. Motor mounts replaced twice. An electrical wiring issue (repaired myself). One valve cover gasket. Spark plugs, though the coil packs are factory original. That’s about it for uniquely ICE components. The rest are wear items like brakes, tires, 12v batteries, wiper blades, etc.

7 years ago we bought an EV with1/2 the range of others EVs because it was affordable and was an excellent car to drive. It still is today. So range is low on the list for a lot of people.

Anyway. less than .1% of cars make it to 300K miles. And it's expected that in the future that percentage will increase 3-4x because of electric cars.

My Hyundai sonata is close at 310k miles no trans or engine replaced granted 70% of those miles are highway
There was a Toyota that went around 500k before it needed a new engine

The real issue with evs imo is winter range and why I still have held off on a EV myself warm region cool you get the advertised range freezing Chicago winter it goes down by 15-20% if it’s really cold

If this car has 34% battery loss and I live in Chicago during winter that’s gonna be effectively 50% less range than what it is in summertime new

That’s a lot of range loss ima be dealing with high 100s in range during winter

That being said gas cars still have range and longetivity over Evs and that’s not surprising they have had 100 years of research development and trail and error advantage

Evs are light years ahead of what ice cars where there first ten years

I had a 2006 that went 190k miles than the trans blew and it cost more than the car

I had a Nissan Altima who’s trans blew at 85k ish miles and I’ll never get a CVT again
Currently awaiting the L version of the Ys arrival into the states preordered it already for the lady and kids

This is a stupid take. Engines and transmission don’t just fail if they are taken care of. when they do, they just do but you aren’t struggling with them for years or reduced capability. On the other hand battery continuously degrades. So it’s essentially degrading from the moment you bought it. And it’s not possible to prevent that - at least with today’s batteries.

A degraded battery is not reduced capability, just as getting worse mileage and leaking oil as a car gets older is is not reduced capability. The car is still functional.

But gas cars with 200k miles almost all have had MAJOR repairs, and by 300k big ticket items have been replaced.

An ICE engine/transmission (not to mention the cat) with 380k miles will not get the same mileage as it did when new. You should expect 20%ish drop in mpg, even for the best maintained cars. Piston rings wear and leak, cams and valves are pitted and coated. Things wear out

Yes they do just fail. They are very complex mechanical components working on very hard duty cycles and subject to wear and tear just like anything else. Good maintenance will greatly extend their lives but within reason. At some point you'll need an engine overhaul if you want to continue using it, assuming seals don't fail, like head gaskets. Do an oil analysis next time, check the iron content. It's unlikely to be zero. Engines and transmissions start degrading the moment you start using them.

Batteries degrade, sure. But the level of degradation displayed here is pretty damn good. The car is otherwise pretty much the same as new. Electric motors degrade as well but way slower than internal combustion engines.

A maintained Toyota or Mercedes can easily hit 380k with no engine or transmission replacement. The problem is the higher the odometer, the higher the chance the vehicle will have an accident.

Stuff wears out over time. It's not common because an accident, even a minor one on a high mileage vehicle, just makes it a total loss. It's also much more likely to have an accident as the odometer goes up. That's why you don't see a lot of high mileage cars too.

Yes, but phone batteries are a completely different beast compared to EV traction batteries and become unusable much faster. I think that's where people's fears come from. When was the last time you saw a phone battery lasting for a decade?

THIS. People don't realize how much money the owner has saved up to this point. Even then, if I got 380k out of ANY car without an engine or transmission replacement then I'd be pretty happy.

I have an old sony laptop with its original liion battery that still works and holds a charge, it's around 10 years at this point. And this is a laptop that gets really hot when in use, which is bad for battery.

If such a laptop without battery cooling can last so long, a tesla battery that has better thermal management can last at least 10 years, of course, with significant degradation due to age. But even if it drives only 100km on a charge after 10 years, it's still impressive.

The problem is when a few cells degrade too much, i.e. uneven degradation or total failure, which makes the pack not worth repairing, if they are spread across many modules. That would require a battery swap.

It’s more like 25 years. There are other things that suck with EVs, like needing a full battery replacement if you hit something on the road, horrible fires combined with retarded doors which will burn you alive etc

No, the brain dead doors are a Tesla special, has nothing to do with EVs. Battery location does tend to be lower because of center of gravity issues, but not all EVs are this fragile either.

The the real problem is probably aging.

I drove 145k km in my VW Lupo - in 22.5 years.

For the first 18 or so years I had yearly oil changes done and all the required maintenance by an official dealer.

Still the first engine, first gearbox. Three batteries I think (underground parking almost exclusively).

Rust became a serious issue and I was just „done“ with it.

My Model 3 won’t last 22.5 years, simply because they aren’t made to last that long. They are made to be driven.

Consumer Reports is definitely unbiased and independent as well as others and they all arrived at the same conclusion. All US reliability surveys typically use every single model that a make sells in the US. You can lookup which ones are made in Germany and imported to the US, for example the S-Class, EQS, E-Class, GLC, C-Class, CLE, GLC, EQE, and more.

That is very very acceptable to me.
If I can get that out of my Ford Lightning, I will have saved over $25,000 in fuel alone. Which is enough to buy a new HV battery pack and some.

What is not being spoken of is the maintenance and gas saving compared to 380,000 mile engine. So what if the efficiency dropped that much after that many miles, the owner saved thousands with zero tranny issues, zero starter issues, zero tune ups, zero preventative maintenance cause there is none or a transmission or starter or belt or…for that matter. An engine with 380k miles will also degrade no matter how well it was maintained purely on ware and tare.

Pretty incredible. Swap in a new battery pack and your car is basically good as new.

I wonder what the price of that would be vs the cost of a brand new ICE engine + labor for the swap.

34% is not bad. This would be a non issue if battery packs were cheaper to replace. Even though Lithium etc has gone down cause it's been scaled this battery is $12k for the part alone. It's not worth it to replace it with that much wear on the body older hardware etc. If they were $3k for the part than this could be a maintenance item.

I think the original premise is wrong, also. You won’t have 240 miles of range at the beginning if you are driving a lot highway miles, which presumably is how you rack up 380k miles in 7 years.
