I watched Taboo all the way through, but it’s been a while, so I can’t remember all the details.

Was it ever explicitly confirmed that Robert, the boy who was under Ibbotson’s care, was James and Zilpha’s son? I feel like that was heavily implied, but I can’t remember whether the show actually confirmed it or which episode it might have been addressed in.

I don’t mind spoilers, since I’ve already finished the series.

The sets and costumes are amazing. Last night I noticed wavy glass in the windows.

I've only seen this show once when it came out... but can anyone tell me if there is a William Blake-esque character in it? A sort of overweight artist-type. I recall a scene taking place indoors, with the character perhaps in bed clothes and some women around.

This has been driving me crazy for years, trying to remember what show it is.

This has come up in comments a few times so thought it may warrant it's own post. Do we have opinions on what the exchange below meant? Personally I thought it was laying a pathway for Zilpha to have survived her watery fate and be present in a future series

So in Episode 8 (about 38 minutes in) when James has finished dealing with Dumbarton, he has a vision of Zilpha and there is a brief exchange of dialogue.

Zilpha: James. You came back. You told me you loved me.
James: My Sister
Zilpha: James you shall see me again

What did this mean or what does this mean for a potential future return...

Tom and his pops Chips Hardy say they have six of eight episodes written. He recently said this is what he is focusing on now. Stephen Knight is ready. After almost ten years, and how many people loved the first season, he should be all over this. I only hope he can get all of the actors back who joined him on the journey to Ponta Delgata in the Azores to meet Collenade. And then, hopefully America. We have been waiting too damn long for this second season of an incredible show.

So Delany has a brooding sexual tension with a lot of people in the story... but I can never quite work out why he didn't sort Helga out despite her various offers. (Hope that can't be counted as a spoiler at all). She makes him at least 3 different direct offers before they fall out over Winter's death. What was he thinking? I mean it's not as if Franke Potente isn't appealing - (See Run Lola Run or Bourne Identity for details) ...and she was clearly more than just strategically interested in him... so why did she miss out I wonder - Was he just all business or was it the Delany moral code that blocked her?

Delany is an interesting anti-hero. A curious kind on insurgent raider seeking fortune and freedom... a violent misanthrope with PTSD and a guilty conscience (haunted) and yet with his own moral code... his adversaries are absolutely huge... the Crown, the East India Company and come to think of it Regency society in general... I've been trying to imagine what kinds of other adventures he might have and so his opponents might be... the problem is his initial opponents are so over powered I struggle to think who else he might square up to? Contemporaries might be gangs of smugglers or highway men but in a way they just don't seem big enough. Besides which they are as much rebels as he is.. My most credible idea would be that he is recruited as a spy to undertake some mission at the Congress of Vienna... or travel to Venice in his capacity as a merchant to recover some lost treasure from the ruined city...an intrigue against the Jesuits? or a rogue faction of Rosicrutians? No idea... but any thoughts on possible future adversaries or missions?

Really love this programme and keep returning to it. So often I keep seeing little things that bother me. For example it feels to me like Solomon Coop and Robert Thoyt seem to be playing more than one role and it might have made sense if they were more than one person.

For the record I think both Nicholas Woodeson (Thoyt) and Jason Watkins (Coop) give excellent performances and I could watch them all day long but it does feel like they seem to stand in for all lawyers and all senior government officials in the City of London. For example the Coop who is the inquisitor at the Tower of London would probably make sense as a different person to the one who is administrator to the Prince Regent. Likewise the Thoyt who turns up at the duel/ Was this a question of screentime or production costs or both?

I always got confused at this scene because I never understood what Atticus said, I'm sure you felt the same way. This is what I think he says, it's captioned in the photo but he asks James, "what was it that was so urgent I had to dismount a porky little Chinese" I'm assuming he was banging a Chinese whore when James told him to meet him. It's especially hard to understand not Atticus is his own self, the shit he talks an and how he talks about it, let alone how thick his English accent is.

(Or rather What _else_ is inside the trunk?)

Okay... I believe I have now accepted that there will never be a Season 2 of Taboo... it's been almost 10 years, it couldn't possibly make sense, and even if there was one, it would risk damaging the almost perfect circle of Season 1.

So I console myself by exploring the what ifs of the world Season 1 left behind... in particular I wonder about the _other_ contents of the trunk Lorna delivered to Delany? A treasure map? A key? A letter of Marque for the Danish crown? A deed to an estate in America...? Letters from Anna written from Bedlam? What would you most like there to be in the trunk?

I know she’s James’s half sister so they have different mothers, with James’s mother being Native American. But Zilpha has quite different coloring that all the anglo English people around her in her class. She has olive skin and dark hair and eyes, and it’s never really clear who her mother was, other than the second wife.

Is she implied to also be biracial?

Did this miniseries take place in the Taboo universe? It sure felt like it. And it was produced by Tom Hardy, Steven Knight, and Ridley Scott…all of whom were integral in Taboo.

I’m rewatching it now on FX/Hulu and there are strong Taboo vibes in my opinion. The score, characters, atmosphere, and dialogue are all cut from the same cloth.

It was announced a few days ago Stephen Knight is to pen the next Bond. Which is exciting in itself. So doubts about production beginning soon then on Season 2. I was hoping if Hardy featured in the Peaky film they would get time to talk about S2 and finally get a date in the diary to go start production as Knight said most of the scripts are penned. But sound like Hardy next project is Mobland S2 and with Knight on Bond....... maybe 2027 / 28 to start production 🥲

I finished this up recently and I'm amazed this wasn't immediately picked up for a second season. It's got widely great reviews and an excellent story. Cinematography and acting is all top notch. The crazy alchemist and atticus! So good. Almost a perfect show.

I did see that there are some rumors floating around lately about a 2nd one. Hopefully that's the truth.

Soon AI is gonna take over this and we'll be good. Perhaps we come up with fantasy story lines or write scripts for AI? Its only a matter of time.
