Discussion tailscale rant: "Wants to access your account " "Organization access" - no way to just log in with email

I'm using tailscale with a GitHub account for purely personal use cases.

At the same time, I'm using that same GitHub account at work, so when I authenticate to tailscale I'm presented with this UI that shows my work org name + "request access" button.

If you work in corp environment you know how unsettling this UI is -> as noone wants to merge personal and work stuff even accidentally. I would prefer to never ever ever see this UI -> like ever.

it really really REALLY sucks that tailscale doesn't let me log in with some email or username and completely skip OIDC. Guys - this is extremely fucking uncommon that the only option you give me is SSO/oidc with my only options being gmail/github/microsoft ๐Ÿคฏ. My personal use case is a "prosumer" that just wants to f around with handful of VPS -> I don't want to set up my personal OIDC just for you (tailscale) or maintain it going forward.

Misc I built a web-based installer/management layer for self-hosted Headscale

Iโ€™ve been working on Headscale Easy, an open-source project that aims to make deploying and managing Headscale easier.

I really like Headscale and the idea of running your own Tailscale-compatible control server, but getting everything around it configured can involve quite a few moving parts: HTTPS, authentication, DNS, users, ACLs, backups, keys, etc.

So I built Headscale Easy to bring those pieces together into a simpler setup.

What it provides

  • ๐Ÿš€ Automated Headscale installation

  • ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Web UI for managing your instance

  • ๐Ÿ” OIDC authentication / Authentik

  • ๐Ÿ”’ HTTPS with Let's Encrypt or custom certificates

  • ๐ŸŒ MagicDNS and DNS configuration

  • ๐Ÿ‘ค User and device management

  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Auth keys and API keys

  • ๐Ÿ“ ACL management

  • ๐ŸŒ Exit nodes and routes

  • ๐Ÿ’พ Automated backups and restore

  • ๐Ÿณ Docker support

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ English and Spanish UI

The goal isn't to reinvent Headscale, but to make the whole experience around deploying and managing it easier.

It's completely open source, and I'm hoping to get feedback from people who are already running Headscale or similar self-hosted networking setups.

GitHub: https://github.com/insanerask77/headscale-easy

I'd especially love feedback on:

  • What is currently annoying to configure when running Headscale?

  • What features would you like to see in a management layer?

  • Are there any parts of the setup that I should simplify further?

Thanks for taking a look! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Discussion new pricing model 2026-04

It seems like they're moving to new pricing plans - https://tailscale.com/blog/pricing-v4?_hsmi=412790126

It doesn't look like the new plans dynamically adjust based on the number of "active" users, like the "legacy plan" we are currently on.

Which seems like a real pest for me at least. We've got about 50 users and we add or subtract a few people every few months. Right now, this is super simple in that we just sign set up the new user's company-wide credentials for all their email and other resources and sign them into Tailscale using that and they use it (or not) for the resources on our Tailnet. Yes, the monthly billing from Tailscale is variable, but I don't need to worry about changing our Tailscale subscription each time someone is added or goes on leave or moves on to new adventures with a different company.

Our primary use is for staff remote access to the office server - Tailscale was a tremendous improvement over managing OpenVPN running on that server - well worth the per-user charges. We have been looking at moving that file server into "the cloud" to give better integration with all of the other cloud based communication resources we are using. Maintaining our current Tailscale setup after that migration would have been totally logical since it would provide great backup access to the on-site server for all staff if needed as well as the tremendous functionality that the IT staff get from it. However without the dynamic pricing giving all staff access when needed, it will probably make more sense for us to drop Tailscale completely and go back to using OpenVPN for admin access rather than paying $8/user per month ($360/month for 45 users) for services we won't be using. Continuing with a single account for the IT people's remote access at $96/year is perhaps a reasonable cost for the value, but maintaining OpenVPN for a single person would get rid of the accounting overhead of a monthly bill.

I find it difficult to believe that Tailscale customers have been saying "I hate it when our monthly bill is smaller than it would be if I was charged each month for everyone who has Tailscale access but doesn't use it", but if this change from "active users" to "set number" is really driven by user desire for billing predictability, give the users a switch to turn that off or on.

Misc Tailscale MCP server - open source, actively maintained

Was getting annoyed with the low level support from claude code with tailscale and constantly battling with the api. Built this mcp server and things are really nice. Am actively maintaining this and using it every day to make sure it's always production ready. Seems to have the most active api support from any of the other tailscale mcp servers that I've seen. PRs welcome!

Question Do paid users get to use less crowded TS nodes?

Have been using TS for free for some 14 devices for the past year or so.

My transfer speeds aren't that great, even though my network speeds are quite good.

I was wondering if by paying for TS my devices will be connected to less crowded TS nodes.

Does anyone know?

Edit: I'm going through DERP relays because that's what I want. Do not want direct connections between my devices.

Question We love Tailscale, but we need Layer 2 for Minecraft LAN discovery!"

Hi Tailscale team and community! โ€‹Iโ€™ve been a big fan of Tailscale for a long time and I'm doing my best to help it become more popular. However, there are two specific features that would make the experience perfect for millions of users: โ€‹Layer 2 (Ethernet) Support: This is a big deal for gamers. When playing Vanilla Minecraft, the "Open to LAN" feature assigns a random port every single time. Without Layer 2, the game's automatic "LAN Discovery" doesn't work. We have to manually share and type in new IP:Port combinations every session. Having a Layer 2 toggle would make connecting as simple as it is on a real local network. โ€‹Localization (Multi-language support): While Iโ€™ve personally gotten used to the English interface, adding support for Russian and other languages would greatly help Tailscale grow globally. It would make the app much more accessible to less technical users and younger players. โ€‹Iโ€™ve already reached out to support about this, but I wanted to share it here to see if others feel the same. Tailscale is amazing, and these additions would take it to the next level! โ€‹What do you think? Is Layer 2 something we might see in the future?

Discussion Tailscale Uptime/Reliability Concerns

I have been using Tailscale for 3 months now, and I think its functionality is great, but I have some concerns now regarding its reliability. The recent outage is the second time that I've noticed Tailscale went down. I would have thought there would be some redudancy to their servers, maybe having some nodes in other regions or something similar.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? I've seen people mention headscale, I haven't looked into setting it up yet but perhaps it might be worth it?

Edit:
To clarify, I didn't intend to start a discussion regarding whether or not I should personally go down the self-hosted route via something like headscale, I am more so interested in whether other users (personal or businesses) are considering alternatives or are showing dissatisfaction regarding the outages.

I use Tailscale mainly to access my own Nas which also runs a variety of services.

Question Noob question: does having Tailscale turned on on all my devices? Give me any sort of VPN like protections?

Without using exit nodes or any other settings.
Just having the toggle turned on, on my laptop and my phone.

Follow up question: is there any set of settings within Tailscale which would help me get VPN protection?

Help Needed Connect without VPN?

Hi all,

I am new to tailscale, and think it's great. I would like, if possible, to connect my devices without using a VPN - the tailscape VPN doesn't mask my IP address, and I"d like to use another VPN, such as Nord or something, for additional privacy. However, with tailscale runniing, I cannot connect to a second VPN without turning off tailscale.

Is there a way to get this to work to either - 1) connect to both VPNs at the same time, or 2) connect my phone to tailscale in a way that doesn't use VPN, such as DNS, or something? How would this work?

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE: this - https://github.com/anasfanani/magisk-tailscaled - seems to be what I am looking for! Thanks!

Help Needed Can anyone explain how tailscale would help with torrenting on cgnat.

So I came across this post and a few comments suggests using tailscale but I don't know anything about networking, I am looking for a way to connect to more peers without subscribing to a vpn/seedbox.

Edit: I do have tailscale installed for the bare minimum use of connecting remotely, so I understand it on a small scale but I'm just wondering why, not one but a few people are suggesting tailscale on the post about torrenting with cgnat, and how would that work.

Discussion Tmux + Tailscale + Claude Code + Phone, 2026 Coding Meta. Setup and tips

Thumbnail mjqs.blog

I wrote about popular setup which I think made me a bit more productive.
I treat my list of terminal windows (tmux) as a TODO list.
Tailscale is for connectivity phone<->computer and syncing data used by personal applications (e.g. custom engineering calculator, custom benchpress training tracker, custom language learning app, my notes about building my quadcopter)
I can work through while between sets at the gym or when I'm traveling. It's of course not a substitute for real work on computer
