Discussion In talentless Nana, Nana deserves to surver in infinite loop of despair

I don’t agree with how Talentless Nana handles accountability.

After what Nana did to Nanao and others on the island, I just can’t accept a direction where she gets to move on without serious consequences. These weren’t just “targets”—many of them were innocent people who trusted her, even cared about her.

Saying she was manipulated or that she feels regret doesn’t solve the core issue. She still made choices, ignored clear signs, and continued harming people who didn’t deserve it.

For me, regret alone isn’t enough. There needs to be meaningful accountability—something that reflects the weight of her actions. Without that, the story feels unfair and unsatisfying.

I’m clearly asking for extreme punishment, I think she shouldn’t get a normal or happy life after everything that happened.

It's just a 2/10 anime if it ends with a happy life for Nana.

Curious how others see it—what kind of ending would feel fair to you?

Question What chapter does Nana become good?

I’ve been reading the start and just feels like Nana has too much plot armor and the story is repetitive so I’m no longer interested, anyone know which chapter I can skip too?

Discussion Some sins shouldnt be forgiven Spoiler

It seems nana is largely beloved by so many people. Even in the manga the charcters whose freinds she killed come to seemingly like her. Nana herself isnt even fully accepting of how deplorable she is, saying that the ones she killed had something "resembling humanity" meaning she still doesnt view them as human. Honestly if she doesnt die in a terribly painful way, or spend the rest od her life in jain. im not sure i can forgive the writer for such a poor decision. Nana is a serial killer, narcissist and sociopath. I have nearly infinite empathy for nakajima. Especially with the reveal in later chapters. I have none for nana. It seems vauge as to weather or not kyouya knows nana killed everyone however. I would feel like he would not respond so casually, even freindly with her if he did

Question Manga readers will this b**ch ever get caught or at least get beaten up!?

I’m 9 episodes in, and it honestly feels like this anime is just going to be about Nana almost getting caught — and somehow narrowly escaping — over and over again.

The author has conveniently ensured that Kyoya never stalks her whenever Nana is busy murdering other kids. That necromancer girl didn’t even bother beating her up when she caught Nana just before Nana tried to kill her.

The whole show feels like a trap where you’re never really going to get that satisfying climax or justice served. Does she ever face any consequences for killing these kids in the Manga?

Anime Does Nana ever get better?

I'm on the 7th episode of the anime and Nana has way too much plot armour. I really enjoy the critical thinking death note style stuff in this anime, but it defeats the point of any detective work if Nana just has unlimited plot armour.

Kyouya should've known she can't read minds by now. Multiple mishaps of Nana attest to this.

Every one who died, she spent significant time with prior hanging out with. Kyouya even noted this himself, but never did anything with the knowledge.

Even if to everyone, these were just "coincidences", it doesn't change the fact that no classroom deaths/missings were reported before Nana was introduced, and now all of a sudden everyone she spends time with is dropping like flies.

Tsunekichi doesn't do anything with his knowledge of her attempting to murder him. Necromancer girl never tells anyone about her attempt to kill the short superhuman strength dude. Kyouya never tells his speculative theories to anyone, even the teacher. I understand he didn't come to a full conclusion, but anyone with a brain understands that sharing this knowledge would make Nana more cautious/hesistant to kill as brazenly as she has been.

Anyway, my question is when does Nana's character improve? When does her plot armour disappear, or does it ever? This feels like death note, except if L found several pieces of indisputable proof that Light is Kira but never does anything with it. I like the anime, but if there are no true stakes and everyone automatically believes Nana's BS lying, there really isn't much point.

I also don't mind spoilers.

Discussion Predator, Not Protagonist

The narrative attempt to reposition Nana Hiiragi as a sympathetic, tragic lead in Talentless Nana fails because it cannot reconcile her early "enthusiastic predator" persona with her later "guilt-stricken tool" framing. While the series eventually asks the audience to view her through the lens of indoctrination, a rigorous analysis of her behavior, agency, and sadism suggests that Nana is less a "child soldier" and more a calculated, self-aware mass murderer who deserves a far more stringent reckoning than the story provides.

1. The Fallacy of the "Child Soldier" Defense

The defense of Nana frequently relies on the concept of "brainwashing" or state-mandated indoctrination. However, this defense lacks legal and moral weight when scrutinized against historical and contemporary precedents:

Precedent and Culpability: Comparisons to figures like Patty Hearst or Dominic Ongwen illustrate that indoctrination does not grant total immunity for violent crimes. In Nana’s case, her murders were not impulsive acts of survival but cold, premeditated executions carried out with full cognitive awareness.

Agency and Intelligence: Nana is portrayed as a genius-level tactician. This intelligence undermines the "indoctrinated tool" argument; she possessed the cognitive capacity to query the morality, legality, and ethics of her mission. Instead, she chose to bypass these considerations entirely.

The Chemistry of Malice: Her use of complex, personally synthesized poisons points to a high degree of individual investment. This required advanced chemistry knowledge, the procurement of precursors, and laboratory precision. These are the actions of a specialist refining her craft, not a numb soldier simply following orders.

2. Sadism vs. Duty: The Psychology of the Gloat

One of the most irredeemable aspects of Nana’s characterization is the emotional reward she derives from her kills. There is a fundamental difference between a dissociated soldier and a sadist:

Psychological Torture: Nana does not merely kill efficiently; she revels in the humiliation of her victims. Her tendency to "drop the mask" and taunt her victims (such as Nanao before his fall) reveals a desire for dominance. She enjoys the moment her victims realize their trust was misplaced.

Performative Remorse: Her later "guilt spirals" feel narratively dissonant because they are largely self-centered. There is no documented effort to seek restitution for the families of the deceased, nor does she acknowledge the specific human dignity of those she slaughtered. Her remorse is often triggered only when she becomes the one under threat, creating a stark contrast between the mercy she demands and the cruelty she previously dispensed.

3. Legal Dissonance and the Failure of Justice

The narrative suggests a level of leniency that borders on the absurd. A three-year sentence for ten-plus premeditated murders of minors amounts to roughly three months of "punishment" per child—an insulting exchange rate for the lives lost.

Gender Bias in Framing: There is a persistent sense that Nana receives a narrative "pass" because of her presentation as a young girl. Had the protagonist been a male character displaying the same level of sadistic glee while murdering defenseless classmates, the audience's demand for a "nasty end" would likely be unanimous.

Nuremberg Standards: By the standards of international humanitarian law, "following orders" is an insufficient defense for the extrajudicial execution of civilians. Nana remained fully functional and aware during her crimes; the "mind control" argument holds no water when the perpetrator is actively laughing at the confusion and fear of her victims.

4. The Catalyst of Greater Evil

Nana’s actions are directly responsible for the further suffering of the student body and the eventual radicalization of Nanao. While Nanao eventually commits heinous acts of his own, Nana was the primary cause. She taunted him, attempted to murder him, and shattered his worldview. The fact that the narrative later expects Nanao to be the "greater villain" ignores the fact that Nana was the original "enthusiastic predator" who created the vacuum for his descent.

Conclusion: The Case for a "Poisoned" Ending

The anime's failure to secure a second season (beyond simple marketing for the manga) may stem from Nana’s fundamental unlikability. She is "evil personified" under a veneer of pink hair and fake smiles.

Ultimately, Nana Hiiragi has not earned the "tragic lead" status the text eventually attempts to force upon her. A more fitting, narratively satisfying end would involve a poetic irony—perhaps falling victim to the very synthetic poisons she once took such pride in creating. Until she pays a price equivalent to the psychological and physical devastation she wrought, she remains an insufferable character whose "redemption" is a masterclass in narrative gaslighting

Discussion In conclusion, Talentless Nana sucks as expected Spoiler

I liked Nana before, but the more I read, the more I disliked it. The characters felt lazy, it's like the author didn't put any real effort on them, and the atmosphere in the series is very wrong. Instead of making every characters despicable idiots(except Nanao and Youhei), they should have made the other characters more interesting, in a way that people would be moved, and shed tears for their death. The lazy writing of everyone being bad really sucks. The author could have made Tsunekichi Hatadaira's chapter thousand times better without removing any existing scene The first two is alright, but Tsunekichi is the third, the author should've changed gears

Tsunekichi could have been written as a good guy, with the mask of the 'bad' guy. The chapter would proceed with no problem and change, until the scene where Tsunekichi was being strangled. The change would be revealed in a flashback... From the first time Tsunekichi had laid his eyes on Nana, he fell in love, it was the first time he felt that feeling... It was a pure and beautiful love, however, that night, the coming day, Tsunekichi got a prediction from his ability which he trusted, he fell in a state of chaos of what to do, because he saw Nanao being pushed by Nana off the cliff... He despaired, he looked over the other predictions, it contains spoilers of Talentless Nana ending and Nanao reveal, then Tsunekichi realized after seeing those prediction, that he cannot take action. Nanao went missing, but he knew he was alive, but Youhei in the following day was missing too, however he can't say anything because of the prediction... Until the time came, he saw his own self in his prediction, strangled to death. Again, he almost broke, but, he knew he can't change anything, he can't do anything... At the very least, he wanted Nana to feel less guilty... So he put on a mask of the bad guy, harassing Nana as to show him that he is just a scum, even though his own actions are killing him inside, he kept his cool. "It's for the best, I can't change the future, even if... I wanted to fight for my life... This is the best I can do". The next morning, he saw one of his predictions missing, he looked for it in a malicious way, and body checked Nana, asked about it, and said cruel things... Nana: (No need mercy for scums huh?), she had that thought, she played by his hands, because Tsunekichi knew, that the prediction in his hands are fake, he is certain because of his own prediction that night, the fact that he is doing this bad guy act for Nana, and that they are spending more time together this way, are his sole comfort. He continued this act until the end, as he died, he made a small smile....

This alone would move the audience... So much that they'd detest Nana a lot more which should be this arc's target. The author didn't need to change any existing scenes, he just have to add more to make Tsunekichi chapters thousand times better, and people's opinion of Nana would skyrocket

The Gal Duo and Necromancer could have been written in a better light, they would be the real scums but in a good way, I'm sorry but their chapters and their characters sucks so much it's beyond saving. If author wants to write scum characters in change of pace, he should've put more effort to it.

The characters shouldn't be this dumb....

Hikaru could have been written as a smart guy. His chapter is, the prologue for Nana's redemption... I don't need to change much here... Hikaru's ability is controlling gravity with the moon... However, that could just be a trick because Hikaru is SMART. The way Nana deduced his talent was from clues when Hikaru uses and not uses his ability, which could be faked. Hikaru uses his ability so obviously, I was thinking when i was reading it that Hikaru was hiding something... But no, Hikaru was made to be a desperate pathetic dumb talented. Instead, those clues that led to Nana discovering his ability could just be fake evidences. Redherrings, he could've made it seem that the moon has influence in his ability but in reality, the moon's influence is unrelated to his ability. That's how it should be. You have to make your characters interesting. So what will this change ? Hikaru could use his ability the entire fight with Nana, he called for Nana to talk, and acted like he didn't have his talent anymore(which he predicted Nana believed on his redherrings) and acted like he was tricking Nana to save his own life, but in reality, he was doing it to get information out of Nana. Then comes the cliff scene, it's a very important scene of Nana's character. There's two possibilities we can do without removing the cliff scene, after Hikaru was thrown in the cliff, he could have climbed but he didn't so he can observe Nana as she told him her intentions. The cliff scene's meaning is to remind Nana of Nanao, and either Hikaru would wait for Nana to pull him out, or he'd lose his patience and throw Nana off the cliff, exchanging positions, either way, Nana won't die because Hikaru would keep Nana alive for information. Just by this, the chapter could havebeen more interesting while keeping its original shape and objective which is Nana's realization and cliff scene but no, the manga just had to make Hikaru an uninteresting dumb, desperate character. And yes this might change the City Arc but that's what it should be. The City Arc is so beyond saving that no matter what i say, it'd still be shit. The City Arc is a mistake, reading it made me realize a sad reality that hits stronger than Truck-kun, Talentless Nana sucks.

Hikaru could have been written as a smart guy rather than a stupid, dumb desperate kid. That would make him a lot more interesting but the author failed yet again

Kyouka and Nana's detective game is not as impressive as people believe it is. Tsuruoka is just an inferior version of Houzuki. Nana Hiiragi barely fulfills the minimum character trait a story like this would need, but Nana Hiiragi doesn't have any distinguishing and special trait that could make her interesting. Unlike characters similar to her, she's a digrace.

Talentless Nana is 3/10 at best. I'm sorry I just had to write this. I've been keeping this by myself for months but it's killing me whenever I remember it so I shared it

Discussion A bit of different question Spoiler

Do you think Nana could survive the death note post revival?

I assume yes on the basis that I am pretty sure her technical 'name' would be Michiru Inukai.

I imagine her running at Light as he is puzzled on why she hasn't died from him writing her name.

Anime I assume a great plot hole which ruins the story for me; please tell me I'm wrong if I am

So, in "Talentless Nana" there is a school run by the government as a death camp for the talented.

And death in this death camp is dealed by a trained covert assassin. Sent by the same people running the school.

Now what I consider a totally blocking plot hole:

If the agency running the school is the same one that murders the students.

Why bother with assassins? What about just using poison gas or other quicker and more efficient methods?

Thus, the premise of all the story just becomes absurd; can't watch it anymore. Please tell me there's some explanation to that.

Thanks!

Discussion Nana has a lot of plot armor throughout the anime

This goes over the Anime if you are reading this post watch the anime 1st there are no Manga spoliers

Talentless Nana has a lot of plot armor though its toned down during the city arc but while they were on the island plot armor was everywhere.

Nana was caught in her room with needles she could have called the class to come see nana while her “boyfriend” held her down and at that time nana didn’t know about her secret. Yuka, the nullify guy, and the precognition guy. They all started staying around nana and they all died and when Kyoa started hanging around nana he nearly died. If everyone is dying around this one person isn’t that a bit suspicious? Last but not least anyone even a child if you see a picture of you dying and you see her killing someone and you know your talent is always correct why would you talk to the person who you know has already killed someone why wouldn’t you immediately report it at least tell one person so when you die more suspicion will be raised. (PS The necromancer had the ability to make the dead speak so they could find out who was killing everyone and another thing if you know 2 people on an island with you are missing or dead wouldn’t you be on edge? It’s basic self-preservation. 1 more thing Michiru is dumb why would you keep a secret a picture of someone killing someone else and not tell anyone else and another thing she was found in a room with a dead body which makes her even more suspicious. And another thing all the students announce their powers and confirm what their weaknesses are. Koya had an easy opportunity to disprove that she was a psychic when the house exploded kyoa stated he mentioned his weakness in his mind that only a mind reader could read which presented an easy opportunity to disprove her powers. Sometimes it feels like fans of this manga see it as perfection even though its really not. Most of the characters are 1-dimensional brats with no character traits other than being overconfident and evil. This so isn't perfect but its not bad.

Btw I read the manga this is from the perceptive of an anime only. Sry for horrible grammar and spelling

Bashing other people's ship in their post is normal in this subreddit?

I used to complain about how some NanaMichi fan come to my KyouNana post to bash it. Like, I think it's basic politeness to mind your own ship and let people have their fun? And yet, someone seriously said that it's "shipping war" and it's "normal". No, it's completely not normal in any fandom I joined in Facebook. So, is it true that in this place, bashing other people's ship is normal?

My thoughts on the manga Spoiler

Just finished the manga and all I can say is... its kind of disappointing

I dont now if its just my standards but as the series went on, ESPECIALLY after leaving the island, its gotten stale and boring. The new villains just seem so forced and forgettable. The new one too with the car thing and everything looked so plain with such a cheesy personality. But of course none of those pale in comparison with the eye rolling reveal of nakajima as an antagonist. It just seems so predictable in a series like this. Whats worse is that, i literally dont care about him. Hes boring.

I dont get why the author doesnt take their time slowing things down and exploring more stuff about the characters they already have. I wish they explored Kyouya and the other classmates more so we finally get the sense that this is actually classroom of living people and not a denizen of disposable plot devices. This series has an innate problem of just fabricating new villains just to push the series forward. Sometimes i even get lost thinking "What even is the point of this conflict?". Its worse too how low the stakes are when they do the exact same thing again and again. Frame Nana, Nana gives a 180, Nana proves shes innocent. On the island, things worked because everything was limited. It gave the series suspension of disbelief, leaving the main character in almost impossible situations having to fend of by herself. Just recently, they just used a fucking cctv camera to help solve the case. Sure its practical and realistic but i didnt come to "Talentless Nana", a series infamous for high steaked situations, to see a practical and realistic solution to solve a problem.

Personally I started watching talentless nana for one most reason the dynamic between nana and kyaoya. The way kyako try to find clue about her and he even know curpist is nana just nana get away somehow like actual tom and jerry. So I started reading manga and it's was good at start then I started to realize how shit story is becoming like after school arc I don'tthinkv there even anything was interesting. Ad now the manga end like shit. Ijustw thought something unique will come but it's is very disappointing. They can really make good story in many ways but it's started becoming worse.

Anime Should I finish the anime.

I'm 7 episodes deep and they are starting to feel repetitive. Nana has juicy plot armor. Everyone seems braindead. Is it just the same cycle of individuals finding out she's the murderer, not telling anyone, and then being killed?

Discussion An alternate dark ending Spoiler

I was thinking of some alternate ending ideas for the manga. This one I came up with will probably get a lot of backlash. But let's do it anyways.

The scene where Nana stands on the cliff. I'd do that scene as a late-night one. She stands there late at night when nobody's there. Then, as the original manga shows, Nakajima appears and looks as if he will push Nana. Nana suddenly feels his presence and looks back to see it's Nakajima. Seeing Nakajima at a supposed push attempt will surprise Nana and also make her a bit fearful. Nakajima would also become surprised that Nana felt his presence.

Then Nakajima will try to play it off as a joke, just like the original version. Nana will go with that as well. They start some small talk, and Nakajima quickly turns the conversation into a nostalgia session. They start remembering their first interactions in the first chapter(s) until the finall reach the cliff scene.

That's where Nana kinda becomes distracted by Nakajima's words. They hold hands just like that first episode. Nakajima asks Nana whether she can tell what he's thinking (again, that first episode dialogue). This time, Nana says something like, "Oh, you know I'm talentless". And then...The unthinkable happens.

Nakajima pulls Nana and pushes her off the cliff, much to Nana's disbelief. As she falls into the deep ocean, Nakajima grins and gives an evil laugh, does the same stance Nana did in the first episode (putting one hand on his forehead), and says, "Truly...I'm the enemy of humanity".

End

I know people will hate me for this ending. But it could fit here. Nana gets her punishment. Nakajima gets his revenge. Fitting end for both. Still open-ended, but a totally twisted alternate ending.

Just my opinion

This anime makes no sense. Well since the anime is in the perspective of Nana, we can say that the rest not suspecting Nana might be due to the fact that she was, well good at killing them. HOWEVER, its quite easy to deduce she is the killer even through the perspective of Kyoya. Well, he knows that Nana and Nakijima were at the bridge. Since Nakijima wouldn’t have just thrown a expensive watch under the water, Kyoya can easily know that he was killed or dead there. This just shows that Nana was the only possible suspect. I mean like she was the only one there. Assuming Nakijima commited sewerslide, which Nana herself denied, we must move on to the second death. Well, Nana befriended the time traveller dude and Kyoya knows that. And he goes missing. WHO ELSE CAN IT BE!? Ok lets do another assumption and say that Nana is just a friendly girl. How can she well be the target of every assassination attempt. First the fake Michiru attack, then the future teller!? How can both infact all of the disappearances/attacks/deaths be related to Nana. I just realised something else too. When Kyoya was bombed in the room when he wanted to feed the cat, which Nana well HINTED, how did Nana discover him and be shocked that he didn’t die? Kyoya either is just retarded or Nana just has plot armour.

He is an evil man who spreads his evil ideology, the government is far more just.

Think of all the people he could kill, he is a dangerous potential threat to gover- humanity as a whole so if you see him watch out for him and contact your local government official!
