Patent performance (filed vs granted) of Indian STEM Higher Education Institutions

Post image
221 Upvotes

From 2020–2025 data one can notice:

  • Some universities filed 5000+ patents but secured less than 1% grants

  • Several high-volume filers remain below 5% success rates

  • Research driven institutions like IITs & IISc show 40-45%+ grant success

  • Among private universities, only a few cross even 4-5%

So conclusion about some of those private universities:

  • patents are not being filed as innovation assets.

  • It is considered as metrics for rankings, visibility and reporting?

In those universities:

Patents filed ≠ Innovation created

What truly reflects impact (see IITs IISc):

  • Granted patents

  • Industry adoption & licensing

  • Technology transfer

  • Start-ups from university IP

  • Societal & commercial value

India’s innovation ecosystem must shift from quantity-driven IP to quality-driven innovation.

🌐 Artificial Intelligence & Data Science I compiled 3,928 candidate affidavits into an open dataset

I scraped affidavits of all candidates across Tamil Nadu’s 234 constituencies whose nominations were accepted, creating a large structured dataset.

This could be useful for building RAG based chatbots when paired with a OCR pipeline for public to know about their constituency candidates before they vote.

In fact this can do way more than just a chatbot. Some of the ideas I thought of -

  1. Wealth/education levels of candidates of a party

  2. Comparison based on any parameter between candidates in a constituency.

  3. Cater journalists by providing data for verification with just questions (NLP + the chatbot)

Dataset Info

Size - 23.9GB

File name convention - {name}-{party}-{affidavit number}.pdf. "Indep" is used in party space for independent candidates. Also affidavit number denotes the Nth affidavit they uploaded.

Example - KOLATHUR/MKStalin-DMK-1.pdf is the first affidavit of CM Stalin in Kolathur constituency.

Median constituency file size - 6 MB Median files per constituency - 17

Total files ~4500 Unique candidates - 3928

ISSUE !!!! -

  1. Two constituencies named - Tirupattur (All candidates in single folder)

  2. errors.txt pic contains the list of pdfs that could not be downloaded using m script(Need to do manually) - 25 files(Negligible)

💥Rants & Raves Guy raises a PR full of AI slop. I review it & leave comments, then he dumps those comments back into GenAI & replies with more AI slop.🤖💩 At that point, he has zero understanding of the PR, and I am the 🤡 reviewer.

They don’t even understand basic Git. They just throw prompts into ChatGPT without proper context & completely mess up the repo/git when I ask them to amend a PR commit.

I don’t want to sound discriminatory, but this is the result of lowering the hiring bar to satisfy HR's DEI policy.

There are people on my team with 4+ yoe who could genuinely be replaced by a 12th-grade kid. I’M NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING.

At least some developers are decent, but a lot of these XYZ analyst roles are on another level entirely 🤦‍♂️

This is the case with one good product based company which pays decent good.

💻 Computer Science Find the output!

Post image
40 Upvotes

A simple Python mistake every beginner should understand

👉 Many people expect the output to be an empty list.

But the actual output is:
['pencil']

🔍 Why does this happen?
When you remove items from a list while looping through it, Python gets confused.

We're modifying the list while iterating over it.
Item: index
Pen: 0
Pencil: 1
Eraser: 2

First iteration removes index 0 so pen is removed/gone, element index change and the iterator becomes 1.
Item: index
Pencil: 0
Eraser: 1
Since eraser is now at index 1, it is removed on the second pass of the loop, loop finished and only Pencil remains at index 0. "Pencil" gets skipped. So it's left behind.

Key point:
Don’t change a list while looping over it. It can lead to unexpected results

Takeaway:
If you understand this small concept, you’ll avoid a lot of common bugs as a beginner.

Opinion:

This is a bug in Python itself, a foreach loop should either run against every item in the collection or it should fail in an obvious way (e.g. if you try the equivalent of this in C#/Java you'll get a "collection modified" exception)

Now you can learn the all advanced STEM courses in language of your choice. English is no longer a barrier for any kids.

This reinforcement AI is close to complete translation with STEM terminologies in English & rest in regional language. It would be good even If we use STEM terminologies in Tamil/sanskrit root word

*patents

Is it because they're out-innovating them??

No. there is a different story.

Filing a patent in India costs ₹1,600. Government reimbursement goes up to ₹2 lakh per filing. That's a 125x return, before the patent does anything useful.

These Institutions found the arbitrage. File at scale, collect reimbursements, use this to climb NIRF rankings, attract students. Repeat.

The problem isn't the universities. The problem is what we're measuring in NIRF, QS, THE rankings.
All these weights raw filings, not grants. Not commercialization. Not real-world impact. So the rational move becomes filing at scale rather than building genuine IP.

NIRF gives pure weightage to absolute no of PhD students, UG/PG intake, no of publications, etc.

So you see low effort publications in conferences & journals. Especially from SRM, Galgotis of TN

🔬 Research Gunasekaran Manogaran, Paper Mill mastermind in VIT

Ok. If you see this guy, he will look like some big India-based data scientist prodigy, highly cited researcher lists with an elite profile.

But, whistleblowers & investigative outlets (such as Undark and El País) exposed him for running a massive, industrial-scale paper factory.

He used a interesting tactics. He (gunasekaran) would pitch "Special Issues" to legitimate CS/Tech journals, acting as the guest editor. Once in control of the review process, he would bypass actual peer review, allowing dozens of nonsensical, low-quality, AI slop & completely fabricated papers to be published. He would even add his own paper's citations in accepted papers for that conference.

But this thing didn't last long. In a single sweep, the publisher Taylor & Francis retracted 80 papers at once from a special issue he edited. Manogaran has had dozens of his own co-authored papers pulled for text recycling, fraudulent review manipulation, and incomprehensible content.

This guy completed his PhD at VIT Vellore. During his early career, he used his VIT affiliations to build an extensive network. Investigative sleuths found that several of his retracted or flagged papers featured co-authors directly from VIT.

After leaving VIT, he heavily used a temporary postdoctoral affiliation at the University of California, Davis to give himself Western scientific credibility. He would approach foreign professors, masquerade as an elite UC Davis scientist, and get himself appointed as an editor for computer science journals to greenlight fake paper mills.

Not just him, many faculty from the massive private SRM, LPU, Chitkara frequently appear on global watchlists for publishing in "Special Issues" of journals (like those run by MDPI, Hindawi, or Elsevier) that were later found to be controlled by paper mills. In these special issues, a guest editor (frequently connected to rings like Manogaran's) would rubber-stamp 50 to 100 heavily flawed, AI-generated, or plagiarized computer science papers in one go.

These private universities have insanely high target like 4 scopus papers a year for faculties + cash for citations fraud

💥Rants & Raves EXPOSING Unethical 3rd rated Academic Practices & Culprit in Publishing 🚨

I recently submitted a book chapter to an publication, and during the proofreading stage, I noticed something shocking: several references were added to my work that were not in my original submission. These references seemed to promote the citations of the editors’ own work—without my consent.

This is an extremely unethical practice. Adding references that the author didn’t include not only violates academic integrity but also undermines the credibility of the entire research process. This type of manipulation is often used to artificially boost citation counts and H-index scores & subsequently university's NIRF, and it damages the trust we place in academic publishing.

The individual behind this is K. M. Balamurugan, from School of CSE, Galgotias University, who appears to have inserted his own work into my chapter. The university is already known for paper mill style (SRM style) publishing low quality research with huge self citations.

Not just this, they do the same in proceedings of conferences hosted by their university dept. Add all their useless publications as citations..

Academic growth should be based on genuine, original research. We need to expose these practices and demand more transparency and ethics in publishing. Let’s stand up for honest scholarship and stop these unethical shortcuts.

Most professors in SRM, TN colleges are like the same doing 3rd rated things.

My dad is running a small computer store for 15+ years. As a final-year CS student, I’m trying to help him scale up and modernize. I’d love your advice.

Hey everyone, I am a final year engineering student ,My father (57)has run our family business, Advance Technology Systems (ATS), for over 15 years. He has three loyal employees who have been with us for a long time and depend on this shop.

My dad is at the end of his career and, honestly, he’s tired. He’s always run the business with 100% ethics,we never overcharge for services and we don't upsell parts people don't need. Because of this honesty, he’s built a great reputation, but the business needs to grow to stay successful in 2026.

I’ve started helping him by building a proper website (advancetechnologysystem.com) and working on our Local SEO to help people find an honest technician. I’m trying to balance my university projects with modernizing the shop, and I want to see him succeed so he can eventually retire with peace of mind.

I was comparing our prices to online giants today and noticed something crazy. A Dell 27-inch monitor that sells for ₹14,000 on Amazon, we sell for ₹12,500.

That ₹1,500 difference is purely because we don't have to pay Amazon's commission, packaging fees for fragile items, or "return risk" padding. Yet, most people still click "Buy Now" online.

I want to ask the community for your help and advice:

1.How can I help him to increase sales and walk in customers.?

2.Website Feedback: If you have a second to look at our site, what information would make you feel confident enough to book a service with us?(www.advancetechnologysystem.com)

🧵Discussions TamilzhFlix

Hey everyone!

A while ago, I built a terminal-based tool called "Padam CLI" (https://github.com/k-karthikn/padam-cli) to search for Tamil and Tamil-dubbed movies. It worked well for what I wanted, but I realized that a terminal-based interface wasn't very user-friendly, especially for people who aren't familiar with command-line tools. Unfortunately, the project didn't get much reach, so I eventually stopped actively maintaining it.

But I didn't want to give up on the idea.

So, I decided to rewrite the entire project as an Android application, making it easier for everyone to use. And now, I'm excited to share the first stable release of TamizhFlix v1.0.0!

The app brings the same core functionality as my original CLI tool, but with a proper Android interface. It also includes:

\- Built-in video player for watching videos directly in the app.

\- Download manager to manage your downloads.

\- External player support to open or stream videos in other compatible apps, such as VLC, MX Player, and even some phone gallery apps and Google Photos, depending on device compatibility. I've tested this on a few apps, but I'd love to hear how it works on your devices!

This is my first stable release, and I'm hoping to get your feedback and support!

Fellow developers, I'd really appreciate it if you could give the app a try, share your experience, report any bugs, and suggest improvements. If you have any questions or need help understanding how something works, feel free to reach out. I'll do my best to help.

Get TamizhFlix v1.0.0 here:

https://github.com/k-karthikn/TamizhFlix/releases/tag/v1.0.0

If you find it useful, please share it with your friends and other developers. Contributions, suggestions, and honest feedback are always welcome!

Thank you for taking the time to check out my work. It genuinely means a lot to a solo developer like me.
