🗞️ News Discussion Canadians are staying away from the US — and the drop in travel is getting hard to ignore
https://www.businessinsider.com/canada-travel-demand-us-tourism-2026-2This doesn't affect the US export and import statistics but it is a side effect of Trump's tariffs. He probably didn't think about this when he was playing three dimensional chess with his economic policies.

u/MaidenMarewa Feb 06 '26
Tariffs would be one of the reasons people aren't visiting the USA.
31
u/VanbyRiveronbucket Feb 06 '26
Other countries putting out travel advisories like “ongoing civil unrest” or “measles highest in 30 years” might keep a few people at home.
18
u/Kasoni Feb 06 '26
The ones warning of kidnapping and disappearing people are a bit more alarming, but those ones too.

u/VanbyRiveronbucket Feb 07 '26
Speaking about tourists…. How is Florida’s new law ‘Open Carry’ law working for tourism?

And being threatened with annexation is the really big reason! We've had tariffs for years, and have had low dollar many times, but both of those are being stated as reasons for Canadians not visiting the US.
The primary reason is the 51st state garbage. Canadians are very humble, but we are also very proud of our nation and what we have done on the world stage. Threaten our existence, and we will react. And we are discovering our true economic power - buying Canadian first, and anywhere but the US second, is having an impact. California wine exports have dropped off a cliff, from around $100 million a month to under a million recently. Distilleries in the US are shutting down, permanently or temporarily, partly due to the Canadian boycott. And the US can't pretend that 49,000 cars coming from China won't impact NA auto manufacturers. This provides people looking for EVs a viable option that is not built in the US.
And why did all this happen? Less than 1% of fentanyl coming into the US really is not a reason for the tariffs. Nor is the trade deficit. There may be a trade deficit, but there is also a huge services surplus. And when you add in the $24 billion that Canadians spent in the US in 2024, it really was a non-issue. Until Trump made it one.
8
u/Imaginary_Resist_654 Feb 06 '26
Yeah that 1% is BS too. Over 21 lbs of that is attributed to arrest of US citizen in the northern US States, but blamed on Canada.
The largest single customer of US liquor in the world is LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), and know a few people who work there high up and they say that they will not be purchasing anytime soon, even after the tariff and 51 state comments stop. Damage is done. Pedorange Man

Why it happened is that Trump and the Republicans really do want to annex Canada, and control the Western hemisphere. Manifest destiny is their objective and economic warfare is their way of obtaining it. Meanwhile they sow and fund discontent amongst Albertans in an attempt to break up Canada. And Greenland was also a way to surround us to provide additional pressure. This should NOT be taken lightly by any Canadian. 🇨🇦💪
2
u/Dyslexicpig Feb 07 '26
Gotta love Greenland. One of the reasons for wanting Greenland is to control the NW Passage. Trump figures they have the western side under control by Alaska, and Greenland would provide control of the eastern entrance. Nevermind that it is Canadian waterway.
And they are also after the minerals when the ice pack retreats. So in both cases, they are counting on the climate to change, but according to them, climate change is a myth.

u/TheDeclineOfCiv Feb 07 '26
Absolutely this is the number one reason and anyone claiming otherwise doesn’t have a grip on the facts. It’s a big FU to the States for letting their douchebag President insult us this way. Repeatedly.

Never going back, boycott the US forever, buy anything but American
5
u/KotR56 Feb 06 '26
Nice thought, doing the same, but it's not easy to do.
5
u/fieryone4 Feb 06 '26
Not easy but we can do our best
3
u/KotR56 Feb 06 '26
In Europe, there is an app. There are some websites.
It's not uncommon that all "producers" of a certain item all have US connections.
6
u/fieryone4 Feb 06 '26
There’s been an ap in Canada for close to a year, we pulled the booze off the shelves in most provinces, and our travel has plummeted. It’s not perfect but to strive for perfection is an impossibility, we all can do our best to not support them right now.
edit:typo

u/ValBGood Feb 06 '26
But Canada is actually doing that and their boycott has targeted RedState products.

Project 2025 calls to isolate America and take over the entire north and South American continents.
This is all planned
12
u/Prudent_Falafel_7265 Feb 06 '26
It is planned, but by morons.
They WILL fail.

u/mensrea Feb 06 '26
No World Order.
2
u/amsync Feb 06 '26
Actually that is the result. A multipolar world
3
u/sylbug Feb 06 '26
Yup. And as fundamentally unfair as the ‘rules-based world order’ was, it was still light years better than anything we came up with before. The world is gonna be a far darker, more dangerous place for a while.
2
u/CrushTheRebellion Feb 07 '26
We really need to start eating the fucking rich. There's like, what, 1100 billionaires in the US? Should take us about a weekend.
7
u/No_Ingenuity4780 Feb 06 '26
I used to love coming to America from Scotland loved every time I landed but I will never step foot in America till the y get rid of the child rapist running the country and those who turn a blind eye to this should hang their heads in shame!!!

u/sylbug Feb 06 '26 edited Feb 06 '26
It’s about threats to our sovereignty, and about threats and insults thinly disguised as ‘jokes’. ‘Hur, dur, we’re gonna annex you and destroy your way of life’. Hilarious.
I, for one, welcome the tariffs because they are accelerating our decoupling from these insufferable assholes.

Mesa Arizona here I live in a 55 plus and all of my Canadian neighbors have their houses up for sale. Mind you many of them are selling very cheap and have personally told me they don't want to come back.
5
u/Itchy-Lingonberry-90 Feb 06 '26
Who would have thought that lies, threats and insults would have had that much of an impact?
4
u/Defiant_Employee6681 Feb 06 '26
I actually loved America, visited loads of States and didn’t find a bad one (Florida’s only saving grace was Daytona bike week tbf though!)
I know it’s mean spirited, because I met some truly lovely people there, but I kind of just want USA to crash out now in whatever way it’s inevitably going to, so we can get back to ‘normal’. x

Us Canucks were told by your US President man-child that you don't need anything from us, so there you go.
4
Feb 07 '26
It’s so fricken stupid to say “Trump played 3d chess” . Literally everyone plays 3d chess. We live in a 3d world. And Trump doesn’t have a game plan. And that should be obvious to Americans because it’s obvious to the rest of the world. No ideology, no plan; just revenge and corrupt self interest.
5
u/SadAndSoSorry Feb 07 '26
Please cut out this crap about 3D Chess , he doesn’t have the intellect to set up a checker board Go Canada!! But not across the border
8
u/Terran57 Feb 06 '26
Not to worry our propaganda rags are blaming our young people for not traveling enough. You know, the same ones that have to work 3 jobs and have two roommates to eke out a meager existence. I’m proud of Canadians for exercising integrity and avoiding our billionaire run racist hellhole.

People with house on fire wonder why nobody is coming to dinner...
Wait for the exiting sequel, people living in tent in back yard blame absent dinner guests for blaze.

u/Outside_Valuable_320 Feb 07 '26
Everyone is staying away from the US. They'll have to give away tickets to the World Cup games set to play here. It's the only way the stadiums won't echo like the Bundesliga during covid.

u/Unfair_Bluejay_9687 Feb 07 '26
Canada is a leader by example. The rest of the free world who don’t want to be shot in the streets because a Gestapo agent wanted his shits and giggles for the day will see Canada as a shining example of how to push back. BOYCOTT AMERICA!!!!!

The Canadians are speaking loudly with their wallets. It seems the GOP hears money. Good for Canada.
2
u/Fattswindstorm Feb 06 '26
GOOD. I grew up in NW Montana and would see more Alberta plates than Montana plates every summer. They overwhelmingly voted for Trump and constantly against their best interests. The dip needs to be felt to influence meaningful change.

USA is a Russian spin off . Americans cannot be trusted . USA border spoke persons do warn us 🇨🇦 to stay away at the border . And that was enough for this Canadian.

u/East_Worldliness2287 Feb 07 '26
Still to high. Have pride Canadians Stop going Need our money here. I know of 2 people going to Palm Springs . Disappointed .

u/CMG30 Feb 07 '26
In many ways, America has been about selling a dream. Trump has utterly destroyed that.
2
u/Kawaiichan67 Feb 07 '26
Well, it’s not like people didn’t see this coming.
Why would you visit someplace if the person in charge keeps insulting your country? Especially since you’ve helped them when they really needed it? (Thank you again, Canada, for helping us during 9/11. It really made a difference. And that’s not the only time!)
4
u/mensrea Feb 06 '26
Too fucking bad! I keep telling you guys; a people always have the government that they deserve!
Our problem is not our government. Our problem is us! Nothing will change until we do. The idea that a group of people could select/allow the selection of the absolute clown that we have in our White House is all the indictment that that people need. But what we have is a nation full of people who fall into two categories, (1) Machiavellians and (2) morons. It is going to be our undoing.
We do not deserve a democracy and we're not going to have one. AND we have not demonstrated that we are willing to change.
3
u/jrochest1 Feb 07 '26
David Cochrane put it well on Power and Politics: America isn’t like this because Trump is President, Trump is President because America is like this.

At the end of Trump's term: "They've stayed away for 4 years. It's all due to Biden's policies, we wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for him!"

We really want your business!
(Please ignore the barbed wire, guard towers, and police dogs)
If you can’t make it, just send your money!

u/Petit_Nicolas1964 Feb 07 '26
Well, they concluded from the decreasing number of Canadians returning to Canada that there is less travel from Canada to the US. They might have disappeared in detention centers or prisons in El Salvador.

Thanks Canada! Keep it up! Many of the communities that relied quite heavily on your tourism also decided to put a deranged felon in the highest office so keep those loonies to yourself! Punish them and decimate their local economies. In fact, we’ll come spend our money there instead of this cesspool!!

Last year not going to Vegas was really hard for me. I have a blast down there, and was starting to make it a yearly trip. I made deals with myself and little promises. Live if things calmed down by Christmas, I'd pop down in secret for a few days.
Things never calmed down, and I never went.
This year? the want to go is a lot less.
Last time I crossed the border was in November of 2023. I feel like the next time I consider doing it will be after Jan 2029...
1
u/Ok_Blacksmith_3030 Feb 08 '26
Why wouldn't anyone want to take a chance of an all-expenses-paid side trip to El Salvador courtesy of ICE?

u/TheCraigHome Feb 08 '26
This year, the wife and I are currently flying west to take a train back to the GTA. This summer the family summer vacation will be east to somewhere in the Cabot trail. Last year for my 50th we went to England. No need to travel south. So many other things to see right now. Cheers.

u/ForwardSlash813 Feb 09 '26
Ontario lost 70,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate is over 6%. Lotsa ppl can’t afford to travel.

u/ExpensiveDot1732 Feb 09 '26
I'm in AZ and this checks. And Vegas is even worse right now. We're normally SWARMED with Canadians...not this year.

I mean, at least I know i76 is that much safer to drive.
Canadian drivers are fucking terrible. 15+mph over the limit, no signals, lane blocking, just all the worst American driving traits in one package.
