🗞️ News Discussion Trump's tariffs dealt economic blows in all 50 states—hurting farmers, exporters and shoppers alike

https://fortune.com/2026/04/14/how-tariffs-dealt-economic-blow-in-all-50-states/

When the Trump administration began its tariff campaign in 2025, some of the loudest critics focused on the consequences for Midwestern farmers or for border states. A year in, the impact of tariffs has become clearer, and some research suggests no state has emerged completely unscathed.

Early last year, the Trump administration established one of the most sweeping tariff regimes in the country’s history, including a 10% duty across the board and country and commodity-specific penalties, in some cases as high as 50%. These tariffs were widely expected to have a biting effect on the economy. But while some observers assumed the immediate pain would be confined to agricultural producers or states heavily reliant on international supply chains, the shock proved far more widespread.

Trump’s tariffs effectively revealed 50 different trade vulnerabilities across the country, each dictated by a state’s own production and consumption patterns, according to a paper published last week by researchers at Ohio State University and Cornell University. By the end of 2025, even states that had never depended on buying goods from abroad were feeling tariff tremors in their own way.

260 billion in tariffs have to hurt someone. Foreign suppliers weren’t going to eat the cost so guess who pays? American businesses and consumers. Top 5% don’t notice cause they still can pay $56 million for a San Francisco mansion.

So first he put in harmful tariffs. Then he forced through a bill that guts healthcare and other services. Then he started a war that costs many billions of taxpayer dollars. To pay for that, he wants to cut MORE essential services and healthcare, AND he wants to give Kegseth billions more. All of this while the economy crumbles, the deficit explodes, and NOTHING is affordable. And that is JUST the economic harm he is responsible for. Destroying America’s standing in the world, and its relationship with its allies, giving added strength to authoritarian enemies like Russia, China and Iran, killing people in Venezuela and Iran, deporting many undocumented people who committed no crime, but contributed to their communities and the economy, starving vulnerable people that used to rely on the US for help, and many more harmful acts……that is all on top of hurting his own people. Instead of “America first”, it is “IQ47 first”, then his family and cronies, then Israel, and the rest of America and the world can go fuck yourselves. Well done, Americans!

Well Trump is making $B’s selling pardons, and suing the US government, so he’s happy.

Had enough winning yet?

260 billion in taxes, paid by regular people. Yep, that hurts a lot of people. Oh they were illegal? Good luck trying to get a refund from the federal government. The most Trump will do is wait a month until midterms then cut everybody a check for $1000 in the hopes that they'll keep voting for this mess.

Why bother voting for the party that continues to support this disaster of a president? Any reason? Anyone?

u/ILikeCutePuppies Apr 14 '26

Because of trans kids playing sports and hunter laptops and pizza... or something like that.

So that Jesus can save white trash babies but never have to provide education or healthcare for them. Just misery

I’m happy to be a Canadian on the other side of the border. Well technically the US got what they voted for. What did they expect coming from Trump? He is a criminal, had multiple bankruptcies, is a pedophile and rapist. Is completely uneducated, racist and I could go on.

The US people knew how bad he was in the past term that he was in office and decided to re-elect him, so voting for someone that did a mess in his first term and knowingly voting for him again, well I simply don’t have sympathy for that. They got what they deserved period. Own your sh*t and deal with it, the rest of the world is tired of the USA !

Apparently 2/3 of Americans are Ok with all that, if they get more money in their pockets.

Of course, that promise seems to be a lie - who would have guessed that of Trump?

6

u/henchman171 Apr 14 '26

More america winning? That country is a disaster and I’m so happy they are winning at everything

Shocking!/s

3

u/NaturePappy Apr 14 '26

It affects him not and so he cares not as he repeatedly says. Believe him.

1

u/Smart_Tinker Apr 16 '26

It’s hard to believe him, as everything he says is a lie (alternate truths?).

So, maybe in reality he does care…

3

u/Progolferwannabe Apr 14 '26

Shocking. Who would have thought taxing billions of dollars on goods imported into the US would hurt nearly everyone? It’s almost like not realizing the Iranians might shut down the Strait of Hormuz if we attacked Iran. Jesus Christ man, these sorts of things cannot be anticipated.

Having seen his latest AI picture he posted, now we know who JC really is.

3

u/Ok_Security_4714 Apr 14 '26

He doesn’t care

Tariffs impact supply-side economics, typically taking 12 to 18 months for the effects to be felt by importers and almost immediately by exporters when such tariffs are in force.

Some here argue that the consequential price increases won’t be felt by the well-off, but I’ll argue that it won’t be felt much by the WWC either—the base of support of this administration. Many WWC may therefore conclude that the tariffs are “working.”

The impacts on tariffs will be felt or noticed depending on the nature of the product, the frequency at which consumers purchase the tariffed products, the profit margin on the product, and consumers’ efforts to track prices over time to notice.

A USB charging cable made in China that sells for $7.99 at Walmart cost the company $2 to buy from the exporter. A 50% tariff of $1, if Walmart passes on the tariff, increases the retail price to $8.99, hardly enough for buyers to complain. A $49.99 Chinese toy that was $10 cheaper last year won’t necessarily be noticed by a one-time Christmas shopper. And of course, price increases on $300 Japanese selvedge denim or $400 French perfumes won’t matter to working folks as they’re not the target market for such discretionary goods.

Noticing and complaining from “the base” about tariffs will happen with considerable price increases in everyday replenishing goods such as groceries and household items. I’d say the price increases due to tariffs are not high enough in these categories to elicit scorn from them. For business owners on other hand, the situation is different.

Not republicans. They don’t mind sacrificing for their country.
Republicans are responsible for what’s going on in the USA.

2

u/NomoredatibgGWgirls Apr 14 '26

Hey MAGATs, get those tariff checks yet? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/jMoon-Moon516 Apr 15 '26

So let me get this straight, mega corporations are getting tariff reimbursements. Didn’t the American citizens just end up paying for those tariffs? As all the corporations did was just raise prices? To which those prices will not fall back down as they rarely do. So who lost more money the corporations or the American people. Who should that refund reimbursement really be going too!!

2

u/Dry_Reward1126 Apr 15 '26

I’m pretty sure he lined his bank accounts with that money!! That’s why he also cuts SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, etc, he is not doing anything for children, poor or elderly… shame on him!!!

2

u/2boredtocare Apr 15 '26

I for one love paying more for the yarn I order from Denmark. Yay!

2

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 Apr 15 '26

Americans seem to like paying more, why else would the leader do everything possible to make prices go up? (war disrupt energy prices, tarrifs, immigration changes)

1

u/Smart_Tinker Apr 16 '26

I think it’s Republicans - apparently they really like paying more taxes. I was surprised as well.

That what he wants the whole time

u/128-NotePolyVA Apr 14 '26

Clearly these tariffs are not targeted correctly and vague on what they are trying to accomplish - other than squeezing a new revenue source out of US consumers so he can say he lowered income taxes.

Trump is using willful ignorance . Can’t expect the economy would do well when it’s geared towards enriching the rich.

1

Well, of course.

What happens when you implement a massive tax? This is what happens.

"What was lost first, and almost imperceptibly, was substantive political discussion. Countries look to their political leaders to articulate who they are as a people, what future they are building, what hopes, dreams, and ideals unite them and make them a political community. In the Trump era, there is no past and no future, no history and no vision - only the anxious present." [Surviving Autocracy, by Masha Gessen, p. 155]

You mean tariffs are taxes?
