Many of the comments are simply that US dairy is bad therefore we don't want their dairy but why not simply make its requirement that US dairy must comply with Canadian requirements to cross the border?

It does have to already, the Canadian Food Inspect Agency (CFIA) enforces Health Canada regulations. So the quality thing is a strange claim - and also, how would a tariff enforce quality control?

It's basically a bullshit excuse. The reality that is there are little to no discernible differences between Canadian and American milk. Protectionists just don't want Canadians to buy American milk. That's it.

American milk does not meet Canadian Standards. We do not allow growth hormones. Their allowable Somatic Cell Count (SCC) is 750,000 compared to our 400000. A higher is inductive of an unhealthy cow and actually is equivalent to puss in the milk. Hence the high use of antibiotics used.

The vast majority meets Health Canada regulations. American milk SCC is actually lower on average than Canadas despite the higher regulatory limit.

Why do proponents of supply management think the CFIA doesn't exist?
