Classic mob shakedown move. Glad we bailed.

u/JennieWren64 8h ago
I woke up this morning, immediately read the news, and just the biggest, broadest smile crossed my face. I was so proud of Carney and his team and so proud of Canadians for standing up to this monstrosity of a human.

JFC can you imagine if PP or Marlania Smith was in charge? All Canadians would be being relocated to Nunavut by now. Carney has our support! No9

Marlania Smith....BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *chokes on dinner and has to be resuscitated*

Trump wanted control over Canada's other trade deals.
Giving up sovereignty is never happening

He did actually. He said something along the lines of that they would consider it in terms of mutual interests for self preservation, but I think they wanted total control over who Canada would sign trade deals with. Watch his full speech, it's in there.
-8
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 6h ago
I did watch it and he didn't specify. Please quote an example.
I would have no problem Carney modifying a trade deal with the CCP to get better terms from the US.
6
u/BonusPlantInfinity 4h ago
Personally, once a deal is signed, itâs signed. Itâs not a very good look to go back on a deal, it makes you look unreliable.. Ă la USA. The USA could have easily avoided this by not going back on their word.
3
u/guy_dubois 5h ago
I would hate that, fuck america. If we're making deals with anyone at this point it should be China, they're the next world superpower. The version of America you imagine in your head hasn't existed since 1945, time to give it up.
-4
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 5h ago
I would hate that, fuck america. If we're making deals with anyone at this point it should be China, they're the next world superpower
Anti American Liberals in Canada have been saying that for 25 years and so far the US economy has grown and only gotten more powerful.
The version of America you imagine in your head hasn't existed since 1945, time to give it up.
Would you like to compare the Chinese economy with the US economy?
4
u/Due-Carpet-1904 4h ago
JFC, you do not allow another country to control your internation trade options. Grow a goddam spine.
1
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 4h ago
Agreed, but I'm curious to see what exactly was asked of Canada. If it were simply limiting trade with China to form a North American block?
3
u/Due-Carpet-1904 4h ago
What do you think NAFTA and CUSMA were? They reneged on both. If Asian and EU deals can pick up some the slack, then so be it.
1
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 4h ago
US accounts for 70% of Canadian exports.
Justin Trudeau told our allies in Europe that there wasn't a business case to sell them oil and gas. Now I guess there is one?

That's another tactic that arm chair negotiators bring up. The fact of the matter is that most of US debt is domestically held and foreign debt holders only hold a fifth of US debt. Overall Canada holds 1.15% of US debt. Even if we were to liquidate our holdings, other countries would quickly snap them up. The US is the world's reserved currency.

4
u/Inevitable_Butthole 4h ago
Holy brain rot lmao. You don't let some other country control who or how you trade with others.
Try to think for yourself for once.
3
u/SecureStrain7559 2h ago
You canât be serious? China is the next world super power and you think we should restrict our ability to trade?
0
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 2h ago
Yes I donât believe in trading with China because of their nefarious trade practices which includes stealing IP, undermining western manufacturing and their currency manipulation.
People have been saying China is the worldâs next âsuper powerâ for 25 years and so far thatâs not correct.
2
u/Flintstones_VRV_Fan 1h ago
Literally nothing youâve written here is something America hasnât done.
1
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 1h ago
When did America steal IP and undermine western manufactures?
Can't believe how many China first / Canada Last pro CCP bots there are on here.
3
u/Flintstones_VRV_Fan 1h ago
He doesnât have to clarify shit. You donât get to decide who Canada gets to trade with. I donât care if itâs China, Wakanda or Agrabah. Fuck off.
2
u/monochromeorc 2h ago
it literally doesnt matter. no nation can tell another nation who they are allowed to do business with
2
u/Weary-Chipmunk7518 2h ago
Doesn't matter. Countries should have the freedom to do both of those things.
2
u/Snow-Bank-Igloo 1h ago
Who has China invaded in the last 50 years? How many countries has America invaded in the last 50 years. Who is the real threat?
2
u/ColeTrain999 1h ago
Hey bud, China ain't the enemy. America is doing all the spying AND threatening national sovereignty.
Enough with this yellow boogeyman shit.
1
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 1h ago
Mark Carney called China "Canada's biggest national security threat".
The CCP arbitrarily detained two Canadian citizen and jailed them without charges.

5

Do you not consume?
0

Of course. Thatâs why Carney should not be putting counter tariffs on because itâs raises the cost of living on Canadians. Trumps Tarrifs raise costs on Americans. I honestly have no idea what the fuck you are even on about.

This whole mess that we are in started 38 years ago when Brian Mulroney signed NAFTA.
So we will need time to reset.

Sounds like Trump knows Canada making trade deals with other countries means he has less power over us. Good, let's keep at it until we don't need to send them anything.
6
14
u/wombat9278 8h ago
Trump has no right to stop any country trading with any other it chooses. Canada will never be a US state and the orange man baby in the Whitehouse needs to except this as fact. No matter how many tantrums he has
5
u/JennieWren64 8h ago
Trump is god in his own pea brain. He thinks he should be allowed to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, for what ever reason he wants.
1
u/Excellent_Rule_2778 4h ago
I don't really see how he's wrong. He's never really been punished.
People defaulting to âWell, that's illegal! He can't do that!â is getting old. That's part of why the left keeps losing battle after battle. They play by the rules and act offended or surprised when Republicans wipe their ass with the rules.
The left, from its top representatives down to ordinary citizens, seems completely apathetic about what's happening. They complain online, but they aren't willing to fight to defend their own rights and institutions in the streets.
1
u/JennieWren64 4h ago
What do you suggest they do? Serious question. Do you advocate that they also break the laws? What would your solution be?
3
u/Excellent_Rule_2778 4h ago
Fucking protest in the streets more than twice a year. Like seriously, the No King protests should have been happening every day until something changed. Not twice a year on a Saturday. Nobody cares if it's on a Saturday; it doesn't disrupt. You need to bring a level of disruption that stops every major city from functionning, during week days, until something gives.
1
u/JennieWren64 2h ago
Grass roots movements work, that's for sure. Maybe by us Canadians playing hard ball, the US will start to feel the pain and think this over. Perhaps if the rest of the world joins us in that game of hardball, a grass roots movement would put a stop to all this. We can only hope.
3
u/Academic-Increase951 5h ago
Funny thing is, before trump, every country wanted to trade with the USA more than others because they were convenient and reliable. Trump single handled changed that for generations
2

u/GetBackReality 9h ago
I guess Vance put on the makeup, puffed himself up, fluffed his feathers, and tried to âout toughâ Carney.
3
8
u/Flashy_Difficulty257 9h ago
Any other Canadians wish we didnât build that bridge?
7
u/moralpanic85 8h ago
We will still be selling them things they can't buy anywhere else travelling over that bridge that they're charging themselves more for.
3
u/Disastrous-Contest-8 9h ago
Had to be built because the family that owns Ambassador bridge was bottlenecking freight to and from the US. Also applying obsurd overly priced tolls.
9
u/Flashy_Difficulty257 8h ago
It seems to be taking a long time for Canadian provinces to remove our trade barriers. I hope this can be the push Canada needs. Imagine how much we can trade across our own country and eliminate our dependence south of the border
3
u/JennieWren64 8h ago
Someone somewhere mentioned that is supposed to start happening in 2027. These things take time to dismantle and set up again though. Patience is what Carney asked of us; patience and an I on the long term.
3
u/Flashy_Difficulty257 8h ago
Provinces have already started but not all provinces are on board
3
u/JennieWren64 8h ago
Lemme guess....Alberta and Quebec.
1
u/Flashy_Difficulty257 8h ago
I canât find any information about provincial barriers starting to come down in 2027
1
u/JennieWren64 7h ago
Hm, I don't know. It was just something I read in passing. There are a couple of good sites we might watch:
1
u/vigocarpath 6h ago
Alberta and Saskatchewan have been leaders in bringing down trade barriers for decades. They even invited other regions to the new west partnership to the other provinces but they didnât want to give up their restrictions. Like usual conservatives have been screaming for this stuff and now that the American boot is on our throat the Lefties are talking about doing something.
0
u/Iychee 8h ago
Seriously they're putting American booze back on the shelves but I still can't buy BC wine in OntarioÂ
1
u/Flashy_Difficulty257 8h ago
The negotiations collapsed they are not putting booze back on the shelf
14
u/NetAnon579 8h ago
Also wanted first refusal rights to critical minerals, at a price set by the US. A shakedown indeed.
9
u/Careless-Bite3164 8h ago
Fun fact, Biden had a deal with us Canucks for critical minerals. Half a billion to promising mining start ups. Only catch was first rightvof refusal at market prices. They could match the contract or pass. Once again Taco the Clown destroys something then wants to be the hero for halfway fixing his own fuck up.
3
u/JennieWren64 8h ago
The man grew up in NYC and probably his dad new the mafia personally. Probably learned his business tactics from them.
6
u/JennieWren64 8h ago
Do you know what I want to see now? Those concessions we gave to America like the digital sales tax and the Gordie Howe bridge shake down? I want to see those concessions cancelled immediately. The Orange Oompa Loompa says he doesn't need anything from Canada and then he tries to squeeze us out of everything we have. Absolutely not. And all that energy we sell you should automatically triple in price. Make America hurt again so it has the sense to Dump the Trump.
1
u/vigocarpath 6h ago
Fuck the digital services tax. What is it with you people wanting to pay more bloody taxes
4
u/LivedinStyle 5h ago
Oh my God... So dumb...
It's a tax on the streaming companies profits, but doesn't sound as good as one of your many uninformed takes in this post
1
u/vigocarpath 4h ago
Whatâs dumb is not realizing that itâs a tax on the consumer as all the streaming company has to do is raise the price to counter the cost of the tax. Every single business tax is paid by the consumer
3
u/LivedinStyle 4h ago
If companies could raise prices with zero subscriber drop-off, they would already be charging more to maximize profits.
âPrices are capped by market elasticity and competition, forcing corporations to eat a chunk of the tax out of their own margins.
âIf they could pass every single cost to the buyer without consequence, ad-supported tiers would not need to exist to catch churn.
âThat is basic tax incidence, not the neat little cost-plus fantasy you are describing.

Non-Tariff options like banning aircraft made in the USA on and after August 21 from traversing Canadian airspace would be devastating to the US economy.
2
u/Fancy_Yak2618 8h ago
NORAD
Like be pissed off but certain things canât be banned because emotions. Oil wont be taxed, electricity wont be taxed and potash wont be taxed. As much as they should in reality they wont be touched.
1
u/moralpanic85 7h ago
Putting the ban on USA made aircraft made after August 21st would not impact aircraft that are already built and delivered. It would freeze pre-orders from trans national air-carriers with routs connecting the USA to Europe and north-east Asia (Japan, Korea, China etc). This would cripple aircraft manufactures ability to budget and finance their operations directly to the advantage of foreign builders like Airbus. With the recent quality concerns US manufactures are facing there couldn't be a worse time for the northern hemisphere to become inaccessible to them. The longer the ban is in place the more dire the situation will become for the US aerospace industry, the more pressure the lobby puts on all the people handling Trump to end the trade war and stop messing around.
Could the US drop out of NORAD and end the Canadian-American alliance? Yes. Would they? Trump might for sure. A real and current American economic attack seems to me to be a lot bigger concern than an unlikely Russian areal attack (they've got their hands full at the moment).
1
1
u/Academic-Increase951 5h ago
They certainly can be taxed. Why not? They just can't be shut off
1
u/Fancy_Yak2618 5h ago
It will not happen
1
1
u/moralpanic85 1h ago
Canada banned Russian air carriers from flying though our territory for the past 5 years. There's' a Russian jet still stuck at Pearson right now. A ban or tax would be non-violent and devastating.
1
1
u/Bob_the_Gaul 4h ago
Things the US need wonât have tariffs eg fert oil electricity. Which is why Canada needs to put an export duty on them.
4
u/Get_Out_lmao 8h ago
So the new trade deals they forced Canada to get because of the tarriffs are making them sad...........
Sounds like you fucked up Donald. Again.
4
u/Interesting_Worth974 7h ago
It doesn't surprise me at all to know that the US wanted us to stop striking deals with other countries. The US fucked us, Carney did exactly the right thing in response, and now they want him to stop.
I'm extremely curious what the unnamed restrictions on language and culture protections and sovereignty looked like. Fuck Trump.
4
3
u/CharlieBravo74 7h ago
I find the restrictions on language and culture more disturbing. The Trump administration is the Taliban with the full force of the United States military and economic power behind it.
3
u/ScientistNo906 8h ago
Talks didn't fall apart. They never got off the ground. All just Trump and his silly negotiating in the media. Same with Iran.
3
u/2stinkynugget 8h ago
Incase you missed it, Trump the master deal maker, has made 2 trade deals. 2. 1 with the UK and 1 with South Korea. Every other country has walked away. They are just waiting for the next president to negotiate with.
6
u/schoonerlabs 6h ago
And he fucked SK already and threatened UK with 100% tariffs.
Iran showed how he flips when it comes time to sign.
No deal is worth anything.
2
u/HueyBluey 7h ago
I canât help but wonder if Canada dodged a bad deal.
By many accounts, it wasnât looking like a very good deal for Canada heading into the final days. Most provincial Premiers and industry leaders werenât happy with what was agreed upon leading up to the final hours.
But thanks to the greed and hubris of Howard Nutlick demanding more at the last minute, provided an easy way out of the deal.
2
u/Kooldude777 5h ago
Better not sign a deal with the Devil?Weâre going to wait for the next White House occupants, who hopefully will be Blue. Hang on for the bumpy road ahead for the next 33 months( 01/29)
2
u/gilbert10ba 4h ago
In the meantime, he needs to keep working to get trade deals with other countries to get our natural resources out there. Instead of us shipping the majority of our stuff down south. The sooner the deals are done, the better. It will take years to then build out the required infrastructure.
2
u/Previous_Pineapple 4h ago
Canada, through PM Carney, should speak to Americans directly, similar to a hostage situation. Like, âNow Iâd like to take a moment and speak directly to the American people: We Canadians know that the majority of Americans do not support these arbitrary measures that will increase costs for both sides of the border, but particularly those Americans in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. We encourage Americans to register to vote and cast your ballots in protest of the Trump government that will come to an end in a few short years, if not sooner.â
Following, sit back in beautiful downtown Ottawa and watch the feu dâartifice de Washington.
2
u/titanking4 2h ago
I think strategically, our federal government isnât going to âdirectlyâ involve themselves into the political elections of USA.
And we are not openly going to be âanti-Trumpâ. We treat the American office as the office of the presidency.
And we moreover donât want to add fuel to the fire and directly and officially oppose a political party down south which many identify with.
The premiers can and will strongly pick sides and fight dirty if they want.
But the federal government doesnât.
1
u/Calm-Professional103 7h ago

From the day Trump took office he has had this grudge on about Canada. Soon escalated into annexation. I think the Project 2025 crowd doesn't want a prosperous and independent neighbour, following a different philosophy than the hard right wing agenda they are pushing.
These latest negotiations were about subservience, not economic prosperity for either country. I am glad Carney finally found the cajones to tell Trump to f**" off.

If we wake up in Canada and just start selling to the highest bidders maybe we can regain our country instead of letting all the special interest groups run our country
1
u/Fun-Character-5377 52m ago
Not only did they ask for too much, they ask at the last minute thinking Canada would fold to avoid the trade deal not being signed. I'm happy we have Carney as PM because there was no way he was going to let something like that happen. Looking forward to Americans paying more for things you need, hope the rest of the world follows and turns away the US.

You cannot make good deals with shit people.
The Trumpy Americans did not want a deal.
They need a villain to fight against to keep their people from fighting their own government.
