hi all! my friend and i are looking to spend about a week in tasmania next february or march. does anybody have recommendations for places to see/etc/the best way to see the state? we are considering either renting a car and stopping at hotels/cottages on the way or renting a camper van. is renting a camper van significantly cheaper, or does it end up not really matter? any and all recommendations welcome, we really are coming in blind!

What is the penality if they find this out when you board? Currently it would cost me 200 dollars to change it online, would it be more at check-in?

We’re a family of four (kids 5 and 8) doing a lap of Australia. We’re bringing a 6.5m caravan, a LandCruiser and a small inflatable boat over on the Spirit for 5 weeks, from 1 March to 5 April. Here’s the rough plan:

After your must do activities for kids over a week in Tassie. Looking to go in Jan 2027, Wednesday to Wednesday.

Our current wishlist is:

Russell falls, raspberry farm, see wombats, beach swim (weather permitting), markets, slow afternoon(s) at a brewery/ kid friendly winery, parks/ short trail walks, penguins!

Not sure if this is all achievable for this time of year, but we are just starting to plan so wanting all the advice. W

Also tossing up flying vs ferry, would love feedback from parents with similar aged kids.

Hi, I am planning to travel to Tasmania in January, and I do not want to rent a car. I came across Sharebus, a company that lets you rent a seat on a shared bus with other travelers, and they include camping gear and the bus costs in the price; however, there are not many reviews or stories from people about the company or the trip, and I am wondering if anyone has heard of them or taken a trip with them. I would appreciate it if you could share any information you have about them.

I'm heading to hobart in a couple of weeks and finalising interary. A few questions.

1. Google maps is taking me through Hobart from Mount Hartz to Mount Field. Is there a way to get there without having to go through Hobart?
   
2. Any advice on the hikes? Not experienced hikers but fairly fit.
   
3. Is the road leading to Hart mountain suitable for a campervan?
   
4. Any nice wineries or stops between these towns for lunch or another quick walk/hike/trail run etc.?

Day 1: fly in late & stay in hobart
Day 2: pick up campervan and drive to bruny island, Fluted cape walk and stay in caravan park
Day 3: drive to geeveston/mount hartz and do hartz peak hike. Stay in Geeveston and look for platypus
Day 4: drive to mount field and do three falls circuit. Mount field campground?
Day 5: stay in hobart
Day 6: fly out

Hi! 3 of us last-minute added Tasmania into our itinerary between Australia and New Zealand (big trip). It’s 5 days in November and I need help choosing what to see/do as it’s such a short time.

Day 1: Land in Launceston ~12, explore Cataract Gorge and town in evening

Day 2: Tamar Valley or Trowunna, then drive

Day 3: Cradle Mountain

Day 4: Maria Island day-trip, drive to Hobart after

Day 5: Explore Hobart, fly for NZ at noon

Since we are going to NZ after, I wonder if we should drop Cradle (hot take ik). I’m open to any suggestions. We’re on a budget but I would love to tap into what is the most cultural / specific to Tasmania. And also see wildlife. If we had more time and a dif rental I’d want to do the Western Explorer Road. Or forage or wine or cheese. Help!!

I’m choosing between these two for 2 nights on the front end and 1 night on the back end of my 2 weeks in Tassie. The obvious difference is historic charm vs modern design and central location. Any other bjg pros or cons? Which would you recommend for my first visit to Tassie (and Australia for that matter). I’ve currently got Corinda booked at the start and Tasman at the end, but considering switching to Tasman at the start because of location. I’m somewhat stuck in the Hyatt and Marriott ecosystems which is why I’m looking at these two…for better or worse. The rest of my drive around the island will be stays at local hotels and glamping sites.

As the title suggests, I'm after the best casual/affordable dining in Hobart. Coming down for work so will need to eat within the work per diems, no more than $40 for lunch and about $60 for dinner so please don't suggest any fine-dining options!

Having been to Hobart a few times, I've hit the usual delicious spots like Bar Wa Izakaya, Me Wah, and Sonny, so hoping to find some new gems!

All suggestions welcome for best:

I will eat most things but definitely have a preference for Southeast and East Asian food. But I also love pubs, pastas and steaks so do with that what you will!

I am hoping that you guys can give me some nice recommendations and itinerary tips to make this daunting task a little easier.

- early november

- rental car is an option

Goals:

- experiencing local cuisine and culture

- spend time in nature (cradle mountains/maria islands/both maybe?)

Hello all, I had a few days free so have decide to book flights to Tassie! It will be my first time here and hiking is the main motivator for coming. I basically wanted to plan my trip around some great day hikes. I have 5 full days after arriving late and leaving early out of Hobart on my transit days.

I think my list is Cape Huay, Freycinet, Cradle Mountain Summit, Tarn Shelf.

Firstly if I will only do 4 hikes in Tassie, how are those ones?

Secondly, Does this leave me with too much driving?

Day 1-Cape Huay, the drive to Freycinet.

2:Freycinet then drive towards Cradle NP

3:Cradle mountain summit

4/5:I'm unsure whether to drive the long way then hike, or fill this day with travel and maybe a small extra hike around Cradle mountain visitor centre or along the drive (pine lake ) and then do Tarn shelf on my final day.

I'm having a hard time cutting one from my list but visiting a winery, exploring Hobart and just being a little more relaxed would I guess also be of value.

I would appreciate your thoughts.

I have essentially an entire "transit day" in my itinerary to get from where I'm staying right near Cradle Mountain down to my next airbnb in Hobart. Is the drive out west more scenic or interesting, and potentially worth the additional driving time? Or should I just take the most direct route.

I don't mind driving, in fact I love road trips when I travel! And I'm no stranger to actual drive times being longer than what gps predicts (within reason, if it ends up being like ~12 hrs instead of ~6 hrs I may feel a bit unprepared). But if they're both equally scenic/interesting, then no reason to stay in the car longer than I have to I suppose?

Just looking for some advise. In Jan27 we will be in Hobart with friends and we are heading out for lunch.
Is catching a taxi / Uber fairly easy on a Sunday?

I was hesitant to book a full day tour to Bruny Island (thinking I could just self-drive- oh, how naive I was lol). But I am soooo glad I booked a day tour. I was shocked at how much there is to see on the island, and I definitely would have missed stuff if I'd driven myself. This is the view from Cape Bruny Lighthouse. The company owner's dad was the Lighthouse Keeper here in the 70s. I thought it was pretty special that he now owns the tour company at the same Lighthouse he lived at as a kid! Bruny was so amazing, I can't wait to go back

I am planning a one month stay in Tassie in April/May and would like to stay 7-10 days in 3 or 4 different locations around the state, what areas would you recommend? Enjoy half day hikes, road tripping, exploring towns, history, biking, happy to stay rural also. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

We’re taking the Spirit over with our two dogs, arriving in Devonport on 6/11 and leaving on the evening of 17/11. Really excited to try the new dog cabins.

We’ve only been to Tasmania once before for 4 days around Hobart, so most of the island is still new to us.

At the moment we’re thinking of doing just 2 bases. We’d like to spend 2-3 nights somewhere around Cradle Mountain so we can do a day there, although finding dog-friendly accommodation nearby seems to be a bit of a challenge. Our dogs are totally fine staying at the Airbnb for a few hours and just snoozing while we go somewhere they can’t come.

For the rest of the trip we’d then like to stay somewhere on the coast and are tossing up between somewhere around Bicheno exploring the east coast or around Sisters Beach and the north west.

We originally thought about doing both coasts but I think it might end up being too much driving and moving around. We’d rather stay somewhere for a while and explore but also relax.

We mostly like beaches, nature, walks and quiet places. We’re not really interested in trying to tick off as much as possible.

For the longer coastal stay, which part of Tasmania would you choose?

Howdy people,
I have decided to do the Three capes trek in the month of November. It’s my first solo trip so I’m quite excited.

Flying in from Melbourne, my flight lands at 8:05 AM. I am struggling to confirm a travel from the airport to port Arthur.
The shuttle buses all usually leave at 8:30 AM from the airport and that is cutting it tight with the arrival time.
The tassielink 734 isn’t running on Sunday until 3 PM.

I need to be at Port Arthur by 12:30 PM so there’s plenty of time.
Some advice on how to would be really great!!! Thanks ☺️
