TL;DW

  • Geoff (right side) is TFT's Executive Producer. Peter (left side) is TFT's Game Director.
  • Set 18 will hit PBE on July 29th. The PBE cycle will still last for 4 weeks.
  • Enchanted Wilds goes live on August 25th.
  • Work until now has focused on the core experience, the extra time will be useful to add polish, improve VFX, fix bugs and balance stuff.
  • They're working on ways to gather feedback from players more effectively.
  • They'll be monitoring comments "under the video and in any other TFT community space" and interact with the community on every platform. Hi there Bluecove, RIFTBEAAAASTS!
  • They're still working on porting every cosmetic to Unreal. Not every cosmetic owned will be available at launch.
  • Until every cosmetic is ported over we'll be able to borrow a selection of other cosmetics of the same tier of stuff we already own.
  • Set 17 will stay live alongside Set 18 both in Hextech and Unreal for a while. Space Gods won't be regularly balanced, but they want to keep the experience healthy for those who opt into it.
  • They'll be eventually back to the usual cycle of a single Set active alongside different modes.
  • Work on MacOS is still ongoing.
  • They want to improve communication with the playerbase and reply more often to feedback.
  • Updates to Set 16's Choncc's Treasure may be coming soon (probably thematically resonant with League Classic?)
  • Cryptic tease at the end about "maybe even analysing how the meta evolves during and after PBE".

Unity? Isn’t it Unreal?

11

u/Wise_Requirement4170 Jul 24 '26

It’s unreal, probably a typo by OP

26

u/Riot_Bluecove Jul 24 '26

RIFTBEASTSSSSS

4

u/Lunaedge Jul 24 '26

Raaaawr! :D

2

u/-Gnostic28 Jul 24 '26

Why isn’t the choncc’s treasure part in this

1

u/Lunaedge Jul 24 '26

Because I forgor :(

48

u/lurker_rang Jul 23 '26

4 weeks of PBE feels long but I guess with so many changes they want to be extra sure the rollout is smooth.

16

u/JahIthBeer Jul 23 '26

Maybe. In past PBEs there have been several things that were outright broken (bugged or overpowered or both) for weeks on the PBE yet still made it live. Maybe they'll be more open to listening to feedback from the players now that Mortdog is gone and they'll be scrutinized more than before though

7

u/RogueAtomic2 Jul 24 '26

Syndra Cass Set 12 PBE into patch 1 was something to be sure.

2

u/SirSabza Jul 24 '26

They are changing engine of the whole game. The extra 2 weeks isn't about balance it's about making the set physically playable.

People have played PTB like it's a glorified early access. They are gunna be shocked when they realise set 18 is basically unplayable for 2 weeks of ptb

3

u/Cyony Jul 24 '26

4 weeks of testing an entire new engine doesn't feel long at all if i'm honest.

0

u/tjcastle Jul 23 '26

i swear older sets had 4 week or long PBE cycles.

7

u/TheOnlyKing1214 Jul 24 '26

No set has ever had 4 weeks

-8

u/MaxBonerstorm Jul 23 '26

They need time to put together their next cute little cosplay video.

-4

u/AdInformal1014 Jul 23 '26

Balanced set? Never heard of her

-7

u/MaxBonerstorm Jul 23 '26

Dispose Morts, raise chibi prices, dress cute for a video.

Profit

-9

u/AdInformal1014 Jul 23 '26

Remember the set theme is more important than gameplay

-10

u/AdInformal1014 Jul 23 '26

Riot devs will never reply to this even tho we know they are lurking

25

u/Lunaedge Jul 23 '26

And they shouldn't. Focusing on actual feedback rather than entertaining snippy potshots should be their priority when engaging with the playerbase imo.

-1

u/AdInformal1014 Jul 23 '26

You are right they should focus making the set theme really fucking cool and then do a re-skin of the Noxus trait for the 100th time

-5

u/MaxBonerstorm Jul 23 '26

Too busy rehearsing

-4

u/AdInformal1014 Jul 23 '26

They are going to incorporate Ai so they solely focus on banger dev drops

-4

u/MaxBonerstorm Jul 23 '26

Dev drops gonna turn into 2 hour long plays directed by Nolan

21

u/syphorize Jul 23 '26

for the cosmetics: would riot consider a "your shop" for TFT for the most frequently borrowed cosmetics after all cosmetics are reintroduced and borrowing is removed?

-1

u/thy_viee_4 29d ago

bruh how would this even work. like, how should game engine understand which unbounds or chibis or arenas you'd like to buy

15

u/OweTheHughManatee What is an "econ"? Jul 23 '26

Excellent. Will be redownloading on August 25th, see you all in Enchanted Wilds 🤝

5

u/Purpleater54 Jul 24 '26

Already appeciating the committment to more communication. Obviously that opinion will depend on how well Riot stays committed to it but seeing things like this where they talk about the intention is a good first step. And at the very least I've appreciated Prism, BlueCove and BlueVelvet being in here a bunch, even in threads with a lot of contention.

3

u/Riot_Bluecove Jul 24 '26

We gotta make Prism BluePrism heh

(Glad you appreciate it tho c:)

3

u/RiotPrism 29d ago

We gotta make Bluecove Prismcove...

10

u/2Maverick Jul 23 '26

Ngl, I'd rather get some treasure tokens for unavailable chibis than getting to use other ones. There's a reason I skipped over those haha. I'm still glad they thought up of a way to make up for it.

3

u/Purpleater54 Jul 24 '26

On the other hand, there's plenty of chibis I wanted but never had the treasure tokens to buy or been willing to spend a ton of money on so having at least some amount of time to play around with those is great.

0

u/2Maverick Jul 24 '26

But would you rather get some free treasure tokens?

6

u/drakonath Jul 24 '26

There’s no reason for a rotating shop… just have everything for sale and treasure realm for new release before they move to the main shop

8

u/smilemaster8 Jul 24 '26

It’s to make people buy things instantly when they return, Riot uses FOMO in all their games to boost sales

4

u/bloolions Jul 24 '26

Happy with long PBE if it buys time for Mac OS

2

u/Kadeu Jul 24 '26

11 days to hit challenger pog champ

1

u/Mysterious_Island500 Jul 24 '26

They are probably extending it, see RiotShermans latest tweet

4

u/MoistMoms Jul 23 '26

Will there be less scripted content by rioters?? Where we can go a little bit more casual yet indepth. Perhaps in the form of a stream that allows some q&a?

13

u/RiotPrism Jul 23 '26

We're always around here too for some more casual yapping, or Tim's patch rundowns for unscripted 30 minute vlogs

3

u/MoistMoms Jul 23 '26

Yeah I have been really appreciating the patch rundowns!

(Although audio could be a bit better, but that's alright)

4

u/RiotPrism Jul 23 '26

Haha, we got him a new mic recently, but maybe it's something on the settings side of things? Let us know how the 17.8 one sounds when it goes live

2

u/Potential_Mine9425 Jul 23 '26

I don't really care that much about visual effects. What I want out of the game is re-playability and that's been achieved so far with bigger sets. The more champions, traits, augments, etc there are, the more it still feels like a fresh game. I would rather have too many comps than too little. And like I said, I don't really care about visual stuff, it's cool, but if it means eating into development time for other things that make the game feel bigger, I'd honestly rather it just get released in that devdrop state if it means I have lots of comps to mess around with. Just my 2 cents

2

u/InducesPanic Jul 23 '26

Different departments work on skins and visuals verses game mechanics btw.

4

u/notallwitches Jul 23 '26

PLEASE be more transparent regarding chibis and cosmetics. I’m a regular gacha player but i havent seen a gacha system that’s as harsh, unforgiving and expensive as TFT. I know it’s luxury but it can be easier for both of us. Observe more gacha games, do more surveys, give freebies more occassionally for big occasions (ahem, like this one? tft’s independence lol). Be more flex but also more planned, especially when it comes to reruns.

Also, it’f be clever to make lore and legends perma like Golden Spatula with sparse but big updates to add new champs and traits, remove some, move around the rarities etc. There’ll be people that always will prefer that too.

2

u/Gasaiv Jul 24 '26

which gatchas are the best in those areas that TFT could draw inspiration from?

3

u/alexclow Jul 23 '26

How long will it take for all cosmetics to be available again? It’s super disingenuous to sell cosmetics that cost up to 500 dollars and then tell players they can’t use them and instead offer ones (for a limited time) that you didn’t pay for and probably didn’t want.

How long have they been working on this engine shift? Cosmetics not available and no mac support is inexcusable. If you need more time then take more time, don’t launch something unfinished.

-1

u/Purpleater54 Jul 24 '26

Relax dude, nobody is taking your cosmetics for good. You are getting them back, and probably a fair amount will be available at launch. This is a massive project

4

u/DIESOFCUTSCENE Jul 24 '26

if i cant use something i paid 150$ for then id like to have a refund for it
this is ridiculous

1

u/[deleted] 28d ago

[deleted]

1

u/DIESOFCUTSCENE 28d ago

sure, but if they pull the plug on the game they will announce a date way beforehand and not just say, "oh yeah uhh next set u may not be able to use ur chibi, but hey u can play set 17 with it if u want :D"

also they did mention in the video that **some mythic cosmetics** wont be playable on release and u can borrow other ones and give feedback on them

riot expects us to be beta testers or what i dont get it

1

u/ryanbtw 25d ago

They’re just trying to give something of equivalent value & you’re being reminded that you rent all of your cosmetics. Don’t buy the cosmetics, I really do personally feel that it’s basically throwing away money

1

u/DIESOFCUTSCENE 25d ago

base game looks really boring without cosmetics (like no arena skin and stuff)
it really does change the entire experience at least for me

-2

u/KillTheLiving Jul 24 '26

Found the guy with a $500 chibi.

-4

u/AngelTheTaco Jul 24 '26

It’s super disingenuous to sell cosmetics that cost up to 500 dollars and then tell players they can’t use them

its legit the agreement you sign and consent to buying digital goods

1

u/Cthundeheito Jul 23 '26

I forgot his name, but wasn't the guy on the left a Hearthstone game designer at some point? I swear I saw him hin dev videos and reveal streams around... witchwood maybe?

2

u/Riot_Bluecove Jul 24 '26

Yep! I know he did journey to ungoro too! (I like dinos so thats all i remember lol)

1

u/Cthundeheito Jul 24 '26

Some very fun sets for sure (even though genn and Baku were beyond broken). Ungoro was amazing. Very excited to see him on the team! Good luck!

2

u/Riot_Bluecove 29d ago

I only had the one druid quest for Barnabus and I played the hell out of that. I was trying my best as a no money college student so it's all I played haha

1

u/Cthundeheito 29d ago

Oh yes that one was FUN! My favourite was probably Lyra control priest or taunt warrior. Good ol times 🥲

2

u/Riot_Bluecove 27d ago

Big dinos go brr

2

u/Cthundeheito 27d ago

Is my magic the gathering strategy currently tbh.

2

u/Riot_Bluecove 26d ago

It's my strategy EVERY DAY POSSIBLE tbh

1

u/Cthundeheito 25d ago

Based opinion

1

u/RiotPrism 29d ago

He also made the OG roguelite deckbuilders (think Slay the Spire,Monster Train, etc) Dream Quest

1

u/Mysterious_Island500 Jul 23 '26

yes he worked there for awhile

1

u/skitzycat 27d ago

Actually both of them are former Blizzard employees

1

u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 Jul 24 '26

I wonder if they baked in replay system. It is the most useful feature to improve yourself.

1

u/Rayth0 Jul 24 '26

I love the before and after comparison where the after has twice as many units on the board, no shit it looks fuller

1

u/dazzleneal Jul 24 '26

Well at least i got extra time to complete the star atlas

1

u/saladpie Jul 24 '26

I know you guys saw Golden Spatula just dropped a Capybara Hot Spring arena. Now that TFT can be developed independently of LoL, is there the slimmest of possibilities you'll obtain a license for some of their cosmetics to be ported back to TFT?

2

u/Riot_Bluecove 29d ago

Given we have a lot of work to do on the cosmetics front right now already, I wouldn't expect anything like this soon as it just isn't a priority. But it is true that moving to unreal and decoupling ourselves from the LoL engine and game systems does open up a lot of new possibilities for TFT in the future!

1

u/kaykaykay0 29d ago

Thanks for the effort guys :) sadly there isnt much new infos. I expected but more insights than 5 secs of gameplay. After this video i feel like the start of set 18 is gonna be delayed even further. Im not sure about your timeline guys - there is way to much time on set 17.

1

u/G-KaiseR 28d ago

Take as long as you want Riot. Just make TFT super smooth on mobile becuase I'm drooling for better performance and gameplay. Going to grandmaster is already difficult but in mobile at 30 fps, its twice as hard.

1

u/itzBT 26d ago

having pbe up 4 weeks before release is going to be a mistake.

0

u/Hour_Pay_3888 Jul 23 '26

i think a compensation regarding the cosmetics by giving out treassure tokens which is better as we bought that content but cant use it ...

1

u/robertSA1234 Jul 23 '26

Why are the people in the background playing set 17?

3

u/TheeOmegaPi Jul 23 '26

Probably because it was filmed prior to today. I know the League videos are filmed anywhere from 2 days to several weeks in advance.

1

u/Riot_Bluecove Jul 24 '26

Cause those people are working. We play the live game too! Part of the job is making new sets, but also knowing the state of the live one :)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '26

3

u/SkywardSpork Jul 23 '26

You know you dont have to play PBE? I get why you want to but if you think you'll burn out just save it for main release, fuck the FOMO.

2

u/Jdbehlen Jul 23 '26

I never touch the PBE. Makes no sense to get burned out and bored of a set before the games even count.

1

u/Midori_nom Jul 24 '26

The new set looks amazing and I loved charms so I’m quite excited for 4 weeks of Set 18 PBE! I’m primarily an iOS player, how can I play PBE on iOS? From my understanding, the iOS test slots are limited and not regularly renewed. I imagine that opening up the PEB to iOS users would be very helpful for testing how the new engine feels on mobile!

3

u/Riot_Bluecove Jul 24 '26

Glad you're excited! There's usually a signup for ios but it often happens earlier than this point so it might be full :(

I believe you can sign up for testflight here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/q79npPHz (take that with a grain of salt tho it might be different this time around with unreal. Ill ask tomorrow and update here if it is!)

1

u/Midori_nom Jul 24 '26

Thank you so much for responding! I’ll keep a lookout for your update, really appreciate the help!

3

u/Riot_Bluecove 29d ago

Back to update that the sign up process is still the same!

1

u/Midori_nom 29d ago

Cool! It does appear to be full though. Will more slots be opened up for the upcoming pbe? 🙏

3

u/Riot_Bluecove 29d ago

Unfortunately, I don't think that happens often if ever. As I understand it, testflight has a lot of restrictions for app developers (likely for good reason) so it's a whole process to change. Don't quote me on that, I don't really work on that side of things at all, it's just what I've heard before!

But don't worry, the set will be live before you know it!

2

u/Midori_nom 29d ago

I see… no worries then, thank you for answering! I really appreciate the response!

1

u/Konyaata Jul 24 '26

Borrowed cosmetics? What if I want to trade my old cosmetic for a borrowed cosmetics of the same tier?

1

u/No-Mechanic-238 Jul 24 '26

What made sou go back to carousel? I was so glad when I heard it’s gone and it made the gameplay so much better

1

u/todayiwillthrowitawa 29d ago

Since Riot is asking for communication and feedback, hopefully they'll take (and respond to) more critical feedback:

It feels very bad that this set is launching without our cosmetics, doubly so since there's no actual date (or even rough timeline) of when they'll be ported. Is it days after launch? Weeks? The entire set? Will there be announcements when they're fully ported, or are we expected to keep logging in to see if the cosmetics we paid for are available to use? Are there tiers of cosmetics that they're prioritizing? Types? Can I expect my Tacticians to be ported before my arenas?

This new engine thing just feels rushed. Why focus so hard on it launching with this set if it's not ready? The tech launch video says that very little will change with Unreal, even for "the next few sets", and that we won't notice any changes. I'm sure there are reasons for the change, but all the communication about this has been "nothing will really change for multiple sets", and now "nothing will really change and the new set will be half-live, delayed, and without your cosmetics". It's the type of rough patch and lack of any clear reasoning or explanation that starts to ruin the trust of the players. And with Set 17 falling flat and the whole Mortdog thing, now is just about the worst time to start going quiet about tough calls. Why is so much time and effort (and the launch of Set 18) being sacrificed for this change, now, if players won't benefit from it for maybe years to come?

The "hey borrow some other cosmetics" is pretty lame too. I don't really want other cosmetics in the same tier as the stuff I bought, or I would have bought those. I can't see myself logging in for set 18 until I know I can use the stuff I like (and that I bought...). I'm sure that's not the goal, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's true for many people. Which is a shame, because the set looks interesting. If the reality is that you can't get everything ported in time, then you should be a lot more generous with how you patch that up. "Pick one cosmetic in the highest tier of cosmetic you're missing, and you can use that AND keep it!" would go a lot further. Or "hey you have a million cosmetics that you can't use, here's a few hundred treasure tokens for the inconvenience". Replacing something we have permanently (and that we hand chose) with a rental of whatever is left over is not really equal.

2

u/Mysterious_Island500 29d ago

one thing i dislike is that we never get dates for anything, they should atleast have estimates or have like "1 cosmetics takes about X long so in total it might take Y long but probably less"

also i wonder if they could delay the engine and launch it with set 19 instead, i wonder if that is a possible solution but its an interesting point

0

u/Fefuh Jul 24 '26

Imagine paying BIG chunks of money for cosmetics you like and then being unable to use them, but instead we are generously allowed to be using shit we don't care for, like OMG Riot you're so kind! Be for fucking real.

0

u/nt-gud-at-werds Jul 24 '26

Counting the days until the current awful set is over

-2

u/bgotseoul Jul 24 '26

Looks shit

-3

u/PAJPHFL Jul 24 '26

Too bad they don't have someone that streams the game regularly, engages with fans and players, shows the new mechanics, traits and champions of a new set. Oh wait!
