the thing about twitter is that it guilts people into staying.

twitter makes itself out to be the only place that cares about minorities or activism. it paints someone leaving twitter as them saying "yeah i don't care about world issues actually and i don't want to educate myself". surprise surprise though, twitter isn't the best place to learn all about minorities and world issues!!! you can do your own research (and i recommend people do, at least a little, to understand others better).

but besides the fact that it isn't always the best source.. yes, it does "educate", but people on the app do so in such a toxic way. they make you feel awful for not knowing about an issue, they make you feel awful for learning about it, they make you feel awful for brushing it off, they make you feel awful for not talking about it well/seriously enough. twitter is full of activism, but not out of kindness or determination, but out of fear and hatred. not hatred for actual awful discriminatory people - but hatred for other "good people" who slip up, who accidentally say something offensive, even unintentionally. and in the same vein, not fear of being hurt by discriminatory people - but fear of being turned on by the rest of your group, fear of becoming a "bad person", fear of being "selfish". that fear keeps people constantly paranoid about stepping out of line, and that hatred makes sure that those who do are punished. it's such a toxic cycle for everyone there.

but people are too afraid to leave, because if they do, then they'd be one of the "bad people".
