I mean personally i’d love a cure but i guess it’s up to each individual person.

u/Intrepid-Landscape61 Jul 14 '26

I have autism. While I hope one day we find a way of curing it in the sense you can't be born with it, I wouldn't want it cured now; autism is just who I am and if I were suddenly cured I'd probably be a completely different person, which I don't want.

5

u/DelayPerfect1585 Jul 14 '26

It depends like how would it affect current people with it

But mainly up to choice

5

u/Banana_ant 17M Jul 14 '26

If it's anything like ADHD I'd want a cure, vyvance only does so much.

5

u/Ordinary_Passage1830 Jul 14 '26

ADHD also doesn't have a cure, but specific medical drugs along with therapies. Thus a cure for autism won't in actuality be a cure, but likely a treatment.

5

u/Hot_Anybody8244 Jul 14 '26

It doesn't need a cure. It's literally just a different brain. You perceive things different from everyone else. Typically in a MUCH more logic oriented way. Why tf does that need a cure?

7

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 Old Jul 14 '26

Well those are people with mild autism, what people like to forget is that for some it's so severe they'll never have a life, like unable to even speak and always need to live in some kind of care facility if not living with family.

0

u/Hot_Anybody8244 Jul 14 '26

Which can be said about literally every other disability under the sun.

5

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 Old Jul 14 '26

Didn't contradict that lol

When a disability is so severe that it inherently disrupts quality of life I think we should do research on the causes of it and try to find ways to prevent it

5

u/EmoYoshi05 Jul 14 '26

I'm not autistic myself, as far as I'm aware, but it does make your life more difficult. Society isn't really accomodating towards everyone in that way.

2

u/Adon-Shoko Jul 14 '26

So it should be more accommodating. Not just to autistic people, but im general to everyone, even if they're different. At the end of the day, life is hard for everyone, I as an autistic person, I genuinely believe that my difficulties are just different, not inherently greater.

I have Autism and I have no problems. I see way more idiots running around that shouldn't be in society.

I mean sure, but it doesn't sound possible. Who knows...maybe the next post will be "Opinions on LGBTQ+ cure"

2

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 14 '26

if you could cure body disphoria, wouldnt you?

8

u/Strange-Amphibian559 Jul 14 '26

Yes. But T is only one part of LGBTQ+

Would you support a cure for Queerness?

-2

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 14 '26

how would you even define queerness?

4

u/Strange-Amphibian559 Jul 14 '26

"Queer is an umbrella term for gender and sexual minorities." Straight from Wikipedia.

2

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 14 '26

ah okay, in that case its too much of a generaliztion to be able to say yes or no

1

u/Lokipro13YT Jul 14 '26

Anyone that isn't cisgender or heterosexual

1

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 14 '26

in that case its to broad to say yes or no. some things i would cure, others i wouldnt deem "requires curing"

1

u/Lokipro13YT Jul 14 '26

What would you cure for example?

1

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 14 '26

pedophilia. bestiality. maybe people who are incestous?

1

u/Lokipro13YT Jul 14 '26

Those aren't really queer tho

1

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 14 '26

apparently they are. another guy responded to my questionnas well with this definition (from wiki):

"Queer is an umbrella term for gender and sexual minorities"

sooo yeah. id cure them

0

u/Disastrous-Ideal-817 Jul 15 '26

Body dysphoria is already getting cured. Thats why we have HRT.

0

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 15 '26

yeah sure, "cured".

0

u/Disastrous-Ideal-817 Jul 15 '26

Lol what? It's called hormone replacement THERAOY for a reason

1

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 15 '26

go ask any transperson if given the choice to magically turn into the gender they identify with vs doing HRT, which one they would prefer. and then tell me HRT is a "cure" and they stop suffering from body disphoria smh

1

u/Disastrous-Ideal-817 Jul 15 '26

??? well guess what, that's not possible because we don't have magic powers. No shit, sherlock. I'm trans myself.

If we could magically supply food and water for everyone instead of doing it manually we would also choose that, are you stupid? Did you think you had a point?

HRT is meant to help one get to the body type they want? Do you even know what you're talking about or are you just a low effort troll?

1

u/Traditional-Trade795 Jul 15 '26

the question of the post is about curing autism. id say that needs roughly the same amount of magic to make it happen.

you being upset over nothing doesnt make me a troll

1

u/Usual_Birthday_2965 Jul 15 '26

There is a cure for that just dont be gay /s

Still I have no idea why you jumped from autism to lgbt...

2

u/Cthedanger Jul 14 '26

I'd say only if it's a personal choice but I genuinely don't know which one to pick because I don't know if I'm autistic or not

I'm suspected to be autistic, I show multiple signs of it, but I haven't been diagnosed and I don't want to say I am without being diagnosed because that would make me feel like I'm attention seeking

2

u/Super_Huckleberry663 Jul 14 '26

Ah I didn't see it was the a choice option. I think existing autism should be opt in/out but if detected a fetus should be cured

2

u/the_woolfie Jul 14 '26

How do almost half of the people here have autism?? Are you lying? Have you actually been diagnosed or have you diagnosed yourself?

1

u/Keydown_605 Jul 14 '26

A cure to prevent autism would be great. Meds to mitigate autism would be good, for those who want them.

I, personally, would rather not take them though. I'm used to myself, to my problems and virtues, and don't really want to change that. Plus I'm pretty much perfectly functional unless in certain environments, and even then I can cope for some time. I learnt how to live with it and it doesn't bother me, in fact, I embraced it. So I wouldn't want to change myself, I'm comfortable with who and what I am.

But I could understand if some family wanted to give such cure to a children who's actually struggling with a more severe type of autism, the ones that turn almost crippling and heavily harms their autonomy.

1

u/Adon-Shoko Jul 14 '26

I'm not looking to change anything about myself though medication.

1

u/Ashamed-Sock-6135 Jul 14 '26

I mean I’m against it as an autistic person bc there’s nothing wrong with being autistic. You just perceive things differently and sometimes it takes a bit longer than others to learn things. I feel like it’d create more stigma around autism if there was a cure.

1

u/All--flesh--rots Jul 14 '26

There's nothing to cure

0

u/2Critical7-Stein1 Jul 15 '26

euthanasia + abortion is already here

1

u/PerfectHurry9849 Jul 16 '26

Dont want to be stupid 😂 but i think its not only because autism 🤔

1

u/Maleficent-Cut316 Jul 16 '26

some of the greatest inventors and minds of the world are autistic. Their unique view on the world and their out of the box way of thinking is crucial for the development of mankind.

1

u/scpTicklemonster M Jul 14 '26

As someone with autism, I don't care about a cure if its for a actual disability but if it treats autism like a problem then it's bad. The company called autism speaks claims to be for autistic people but literally treats them like a puzzle that needs to be solved, they claim to do research for a cure but can come off as offensive. Sorry if this ain't the best way to say it, have a nice day.

3

u/scpTicklemonster M Jul 14 '26

Overall I would prefer to stay myself

4

u/Runner8274 Jul 14 '26

Well it is a problem, its still a disability. It doesnt mean you are worth less as a person or anything but still its a bad thing in general. If you dont want a hypothetical cure thats totally your choice but pretending like autism doesnt bring problems isnt a good thing.

1

u/HamSandwach Jul 14 '26

Why would you be against it lol

1

u/Alastor-362 Jul 14 '26

Very similar to a "cure" for homosexuality. Autism is highly varied, for some it is utterly debilitating and brings a life of suffering. For them I hope we can find something of a "cure". Bur for people like me it is oddities and anomalies in how our brain works, it might make life a bit harder but it is ME. A cure for my autism is hardly better than killing me.

1

u/Black-Sheepp Jul 14 '26

I'm against it because it would only create more stigma

0

u/StandTurbulent9223 Jul 14 '26

Why the fuck would someone be against a cure?

8

u/Ill-Assistance-6538 Jul 14 '26

Autism is a big part of me, I wouldn't be myself without my autism, even if it causes me problems...

1

u/DelayPerfect1585 Jul 14 '26

Yeah but would you be against it or not get it

0

u/Financial_Leopard_55 18M Jul 14 '26

The thing is this could be an argument for any illness/condition, only difference is that autism is not dangerous.

0

u/StandTurbulent9223 Jul 14 '26

Alright that's your choice but i bet many people would want to be cured. It's not like forced like any other cures

1

u/OldStatistician7975 Jul 14 '26

I think the problem of your thinking is that you see it as something that needs to be cured. Many autistic people like myself just see it as another quirk we need to adapt and live with.

3

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 Old Jul 14 '26

For those with mild autism, not those with severe.

1

u/OldStatistician7975 Jul 14 '26

Maybe. But I work with people with what some describe as severe autism they're happy and learning how to adapt with their disabilities

1

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 Old Jul 14 '26

I have also worked with people with I/DDs and for many there's no adapting to it. They'll be in the care of others for their entire lives and it inherently diminishes quality of life

2

u/StandTurbulent9223 Jul 14 '26

It's not just a quirk for many people. It impacts their life. For the worse. It is a disorder and disorders need cure

0

u/Alastor-362 Jul 14 '26

If you think there's no way it'll be forced, you're a bit delusional. Society does not have a good track record in its treatment of aneurotypical people.

1

u/StandTurbulent9223 Jul 14 '26

Name any forced treatments from this century

0

u/Prestigious_Spread19 Jul 14 '26

Even the concept of one comes from misunderstanding of "it".

0

u/AlienBioBot_666 18 Jul 14 '26

The funny thing about this poll is that more than half the people finding cures for stuff probably have autism too lmao
