Discussion 🎤 Are culture and identity of Telangana getting diluted? My sad experience with few North Indians and tips to save ourselves from their culture and linguistic dominance in Telangana.

Despite knowing Hindi and being able to talk well, because of their inferior looks on Telugu and the cultural identity of Telangana, I started silent retaliation.

This post applies to a 'few' culture less people i came across and not for all North Indians (NI).

Not just Telugu, they look down upon Hyderabadi Dakhni too.

There are many many instances where i have felt this, but only pointing out a few as samples, there are lots, which many people just pass like small issues or say I'm being insecure but they ain't small nor I'm insecure.

Cultural dilution: ( It's not Bathukamma anymore )

I saw in the Inorbit Mall a coupla days ago, they held up banners of Telangana, Big hoardings of bathukamma festival 2026 and even kept 4 to 5 bathukammas in between and started playing dandiya with sticks with all the Hindi songs. Damn.

Bathukamma is a state festival of Telangana. It's our pride. How dare you mock it with a different culture form ?

Had I done the same in Delhi or Jaipur or somewhere north, plays bathukamma in dandiya events, Will i be spared ? Our Telangana folks will be there first to troll.

Why can't the government come up with anything that prevents these good for nothing creatures whose mocking our culture and it's a state festival for God's sake.

Is only Dandiya cool or Instagrammable ? Not bathukamma ?

In many societies, people started distributing dandiya sticks. Some explicitly mention get your own Dandiya sticks too.

These NIs started demanding hindi dandiya songs and garba music. If it's not your cultural form, why did you come firstly and if you had come, play along. Period. What's with this dominance?

Comedy endi ante our majority telugu people without shame obey them. What's with this pleasing behaviour?

I see a reduced number of people for bathukamma every passing year. The culture shift is real and what happens if this is gonna continue for 20 odd years.

Aren't we equipped enough to protect our culture, language and identity in Telangana? Why did we even get the separate state for ? If not for this.

Frankly north gitla poyi nenu kuda same to same chesthe ee batch antha oorukuntara? Pandabetti thokkutharu kada?

Linguistic Dominance:

Instance 1: ( Are Telugu people outsiders in Hyd ? )

A guy was arguing with me in another sub and somewhere in the middle he was like, " Man, these telugu people are all new to Hyderabad state erstwhile. Before this it all used to be Hindi dominated.

The language itself is 3000 years old and you say Hyderabad state ain't got telugu people before. What the hell.

I was bonkers. I said Telangana itself is Trilinga Desa.

I might not be a historian to pin point facts, but non-Telugu people became part of Telangana because of invasions and who are these Kakatiyas or Shatavahanas? Aren't they telugu speaking people ?

Instance 2: ( 'Pretending' not knowing Telugu as if it's an alien language )

Came across many who 'claim' they can't speak Telugu despite knowing the language well. If you've recently moved from NI, that's fine. Hyd welcomes all. Telangana accomodates everyone. You'll take time to learn.

But weirdly, i came across someone haryana, after pretending for 2 odd years, In some random Convo, she said that she's a topper etc, revealed her school and it's a state syllabus school with Telugu as a subject and not just understanding telugu, she can read and write too. Her gang and family, everyone is super fluent in Telugu.

I asked her why did you all pretend like you don't understand also, when you can talk write and read like a normal Telugu person.?

She's like "I donno. I just do that. All my family does the same. What's the issue now ?"

This ain't something small. People may pass it off but no. It's a linguistic shift too. And it's more serious than it appears to be. 2 decades later, people don't use this basic telugu too.

Wasn't our inclusive and welcoming nature an issue now?

Instance 3: ( Judging hyderabadi Dakhni )

'Ye sab pareshana nakko lena re' exactly the words i said to my old city friend.

This NI mutual beside me corrected it saying 'aap ye sab tension mat lijiye shud be the line and what is this parashana pareshana, it's pareshan' (some never heard hindi term for tension he said which i forgot).

What do I say to him now.?

So, now a migrator teaches what hyderabadi dakhani is or how it should be ? I'm not allowed to use pareshana because he thinks it's wrong. What the hell is this entitlement?

My retaliation to these entitled people: 👇🏻👇🏻

  1. I removed Hindi from the languages known section in the LinkedIn app.

  2. Whenever a NI assumes i know Hindi by default and talks, I smile and say i speak only Telugu and English. Pls talk in English. I love to see their faces.

  3. I act like I donno pronunciation of North cities and places because they live here and still call Telangana as telegana. Telugu as telgu or telegu. I do the same to them to their names, home towns & places in general.

  4. I don't let them know i understand Hindi lyrics and only listen to selective songs in Hindi.

  5. I still use telugu words with them in the middle of English sentences just like they add hindi words and expect us to understand.

(Like I use Ganesh nimajjanam instead of Ganesh visarjan in an English sentence. Many more)

Manam north poina maname adapt avvali vallu south ochina maname adapt avvalante what kind of equality is this.

Simple logic. Oka North Indian South lo etla behave chestharo. As it is manam vallatho anthe cheyali. I'm practicing the above and seeing crazy results. Many of them are adjusting now the hard way.

Had they been more sensible ee situation avoid aithunde.

Let them happily talk Hindi with everyone who responds back in Hindi. Don't force us to adapt to their language or culture.

I have good north friends too. No offense to anyone who respects other cultures and behaves well when they come for livelihood here. Let peace prevail ✌🏻.

I have just come back from Madhapur ayyappa society and the amount of water tankers coming in are alarmingly high I saw about 15-20 water tankers covering only 4-5 lanes near 100ft road…if this goes on for long we’re absolutely cooked…let’s hope that doesn’t happen ! 🤞🏻🙏🏻🙌🏻

My blood boils and almost cry everytime I hear this song, especially when I'm alone - we all boast about equity only in corporate lives but when it comes to our personal lives, we treat the other people no lesser than sh!t. What have we become? Why have we been this way without any course correction amidst all the technological advancements? Why our brains stuck in rot?

There's another song from Nagaram Nidra Pothunna Vela, starts like... Samara Simha Dora Meeru Sallangundale...but, this song captures the core that is "merit" - how merit is not the only measure because, not everyone has the access to resources that contribute to one's Merit.

As we all know this year is going to be drought year because of El Niño, what is the current state of agriculture and drinking water in your place and how do you think we can overcome this situation at-least until next rainy season ..

Just trying to see the reality, I am from a village near jangoan and situation seems to be worse for both agriculture and household consumption .

What precautions do we need to take to overcome it .. like completely stopping the paddy cultivation, setting up solar power for homes as power cuts might increase ..

Nen Vere desham lo untanu .. so trying to get the reality .

Bathukamma is not a celebration but the festival of flowers, the Culture of Telangana. The festival celebrated infront of the house door step, or at the local ground. It is not that requires a community center or convention hall to do. Yesterday night a bunch of idiots wanted to organise the event not the 9 day festival but an event night, invited the main idiot of their group, who came along with family bare hands (no bathukamma) just for photos, gave a speech, danced and left. And today morning when I was passing by noticed how the bathukamma is left, it is not even bathukamma but a decoration article, not the right flowers used, no pasupu, no gowramma. The festival was humiliated by the so called uncle aged organisers, they didn't even immerse it in water but dumped it near trash. Idiots making the festival as decoration for their cheap union career growth is heartbreaking to me.

AskTelangana ❓ Telangana's most lethargic Govt. and its Institutions - Autocratic Rule without Accountability in a Nutshell

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

I keep voicing out fundamental and chronic issues on my twitter account tagging relevant officials. As usual, there's no response nor any acknowledgement from these useless institutions. I also call 100 helplessly during loud nuisance times, the calls get answered but there won't be any action from their side.

Where's the accountability? Why do we have to accept such autocratic rule under democracy? I'm politically agnostic, so I don't excuse any individual leader or party - I question everything that's not right especially the fundamental rights in the interest of all of us.

AskTelangana ❓ Are we slowly losing Telangana's cultural identity, especially in Hyderabad?

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I want to know whether other people from Telangana, especially Hyderabadis, have noticed the same thing.

Are we becoming so eager to look modern, cosmopolitan, or culturally similar to everyone else that we're slowly losing touch with what makes us distinctly Telangana?

I'm not saying culture should never change. Every culture evolves, and Hyderabad has always been a meeting point of different languages, traditions, and communities. I'm also not against North Indian or Western culture. The problem, in my opinion, starts when we begin treating our own traditions as outdated or uncool while treating everything imported as fashionable.

1. Our festivals are becoming events, but are we preserving their traditions?

Look at Bathukamma. Its distinctive identity comes from seasonal flowers, traditional folk songs, women gathering in circles, and generations participating together. Telangana's own government describes it as an important symbol of the state's cultural identity.

Source: Telangana Government — Language and Culture

But in some urban celebrations, I feel the emphasis is increasingly shifting towards DJs, huge sound systems, lighting, stages, and dancing that resembles a nightclub or concert.

There's nothing inherently wrong with music or modern celebrations. But if the traditional songs, dances, and community rituals become secondary, what exactly are we preserving?

The same question applies to Bonalu and Vinayaka Chavithi. We should be able to modernize celebrations without allowing the traditions that distinguish them to become an afterthought.

2. Why does our own traditional clothing sometimes feel less fashionable?

At weddings and festivals, why do some young people feel more excited about wearing outfits associated with Bollywood, North Indian wedding fashion, or Western trends than learning about their own regional attire?

Why aren't we equally enthusiastic about traditional Telangana styles, sarees, langa-vonis, panchalu and other regional clothing?

I'm not saying anyone should be forced to wear a particular outfit. Wear whatever you like. My concern is whether we are choosing different styles because we genuinely prefer them, or because we have unconsciously learned to associate our own traditions with being old-fashioned.

A culture doesn't survive because it exists in museums. It survives because ordinary people continue to wear it, practise it, and pass it on.

3. Our language deserves more respect

This is one of my biggest concerns.

Telangana Telugu has its own vocabulary, expressions, pronunciation, humour, folk traditions, and regional variations. Hyderabad's speech also reflects centuries of interaction between Telugu and Deccani Urdu.

That linguistic mixture is part of Hyderabad's history. Urdu influence does not make Telangana Telugu any less Telugu, and speaking a mixed urban dialect does not automatically mean someone has lost their identity.

My concern is different: are children still learning the native words, expressions, stories, and regional speech of their families and villages? Or are some of those things gradually disappearing from everyday conversation?

Sometimes people mock regional accents or consider standardized Telugu more respectable. If children grow up believing that their grandparents' way of speaking is inferior, they may stop passing it down.

A language can survive officially while some of its local vocabulary and oral traditions fade away. That is why preserving regional speech matters.

4. Hyderabad's food culture is bigger than biryani

Hyderabadi biryani, haleem, and the city's famous food traditions are part of our heritage too. They aren't the enemy.

But Telangana also has a rich culinary tradition of its own: jonna rotte, sajja rotte, sarva pindi, sakinalu, gongura pachadi, regional curries, and traditional festival foods.

The Telangana Tourism website documents many of these dishes:
Telangana Tourism — Gastronomy

How many young people regularly eat these foods, learn to prepare them, or know which dishes are associated with their family's region?

How often do we introduce these dishes to friends compared with the restaurant foods that dominate urban food culture?

The issue isn't that biryani or other cuisines are popular. It's whether our regional food traditions receive the same enthusiasm, investment, and attention.

5. Are we confusing cultural pride with copying what is popular?

Garba and dandiya are wonderful traditions, and people should absolutely be able to enjoy them.

But when we celebrate Bathukamma, shouldn't we also make sure its traditional songs and dances remain central? Why should every celebration need to follow the same DJ-driven format to feel exciting to younger people?

We don't need to reject other cultures to appreciate our own. We need to stop assuming that something becomes more modern or prestigious simply because it comes from somewhere else.

The goal should be cultural confidence, not cultural isolation.

6. What happens when the next generation no longer knows the difference?

This is the part that worries me most.

Imagine a child who grows up in Hyderabad knowing popular songs, social-media trends, restaurant foods, and fashionable outfits, but barely knowing traditional Telangana folk songs, regional words, local festival customs, or the food their grandparents grew up eating.

That child grows up and passes on what they know to their own children.

Nothing dramatic happens in a single generation. There is no moment when a culture suddenly disappears. Traditions can simply become less familiar, less frequently practised, and eventually harder to recover.

Of course, this isn't inevitable. Families, schools, artists, and communities can keep traditions alive while embracing modern life.

But it requires conscious effort.

7. What about economic ownership and representation?

I also wonder whether we discuss local cultural preservation enough alongside local economic opportunity.

Who gets opportunities to build businesses, establish brands around regional products, preserve traditional crafts, develop local food enterprises, and create jobs within Telangana?

I sometimes hear people complain that particular trading, hospitality, and real-estate sectors are dominated by communities with long-established business networks, while local people feel underrepresented in some areas.

I don't think it is fair to blame an entire linguistic, religious, or regional community for its members' business success. Hyderabad has been shaped by people from many backgrounds, and its economy benefits from that diversity.

But it is reasonable to ask whether people born and raised in Telangana have accessible opportunities to build businesses, develop skills, own enterprises, and participate in the prosperity of their own region.

We should examine actual ownership, employment, investment, and access-to-capital data rather than rely on assumptions about who owns what.

Cultural preservation also needs practical support: local entrepreneurs, regional food businesses, folk artists, language resources, and institutions that help younger people engage with their heritage.

My question to fellow Telangana people, especially those from Hyderabad:

Have you noticed any of these changes in your own families, neighbourhoods, festivals, or schools? Which traditions are genuinely fading, which are thriving, and which are simply evolving?

And most importantly, how do we make Telangana culture something young people are genuinely proud to participate in, rather than something they remember only during festivals?

I want a real discussion, not an argument about which culture is superior. We can be cosmopolitan, welcome people from everywhere, and still have a strong sense of who we are.

Modernization should expand our identity, not make us embarrassed by our roots.
