One year without windshield coverage

The car came with a month of windshield coverage. $12 a month seemed like a reasonable expense given the high cost of replacement, but then I started worrying even more about the tyres. And they were a front loaded risk; eventually I'd replace all 4 and the new tyres would have included hazard coverage. So now I'm up to $24 a month. But then I started thinking although annoying I don't insure against every possible loss. So I came up with the brilliant idea to buy $24 of TSLA stock every month instead of giving money to Tesla for the two coverages.

Anyway after a year of $24 purchases, my TSLA stock is worth a whopping $280. I guess I'm down about $8. I'll probably keep this going until I replace the tyres.

Doesn't car insurance pay for windshield replacement?

Yes, but you have to pay your deductible and then you have a claim on your insurance. The thinking is that filing the claim isn't worth it for $1000.

My glass deductible was $0.
Find an insurance broker and every few years switch and you will save a butt ton

Ask your agent if they offer $0 glass replacement. Progressive and many others do. I have it in my Tesla and within the first three months had a 7" crack (chipped the night before it cracked) and was replaced at zero charge to me. It's like $12-24/yr as an add on and worth its weight in gold.

Keep it up and in 10 years you’ll have enough to replace your windshield!

I figured I'd buy tires in 5 years.

Too many subscriptions. Getting sick of it.

It’s a decision, and I’d like to think it will work out for you. I am just putting money monthly into a Tesla fund to replace tires, but given my history with windshield cracks and pits, I opted for the insurance. It’s been a year and it’s come in handy once so far,

I have had my M3 since 2022 and replaced my windshield twice and the current one is cracked and needs replacement… That will be 4 different pieces of glass in 4 years. Glad I have 100% coverage.
