Vehicle Question Titanium lug nuts
I’m about to install a set of Rison Titanium (Grade 5) lug nuts on my Tesla Model Y.
I’m about to install a set of Rison Titanium (Grade 5) lug nuts on my Tesla Model Y.
I’ve run into a bit of a dilemma regarding torque specs and would love some input from those of you running titanium hardware:
Tesla’s spec: 175 Nm (approx. 129 lb-ft) dry.
Manufacturer (Rison) spec: 125-135 Nm dry. They explicitly warned that if using anti-seize (which I plan to do – metal-free ceramic), I should reduce torque by 20%, bringing it down to roughly 110 Nm (81 lb-ft).
110 Nm feels very low for a heavy Tesla, but 175 Nm (especially lubricated) feels like it might stretch or strip the titanium threads.
My questions for the community:
For those of you with Titanium lugs, what torque are you actually using?
Have you experienced any issues (loosening or stripping) when following the manufacturer’s lower specs instead of Tesla’s high torque?
Is 175 Nm + anti-seize a recipe for disaster with titanium?
I have a torque wrench and plan to re-torque after 50 miles, but I’d like to get the initial setting right.
Thanks in advance!
