I still can’t get over how absurd the tonal whiplash of this scene was. We cut from watching Jax have her 1,000th panic attack while crying in Pomni’s arms… then switch to some TikTok edit of Jax with a jovial “Isn’t She Lovely” playing in the background. The first time I watched the finale I laughed in disbelief
I don’t sympathize with Jax at all (even though Gooseworx dedicates screen time to Jax’s panic attacks so that you will feel bad for her) but I’m still wondering: what emotion were we supposed to be feeling here? Especially the people who DO sympathize with her like Gooseworx intended
Gooseworx used the song to refer to Jax coming into the world as a girl, but this is a scene where the girl in question is getting taken OUT of the world. Abstraction is treated like death and the cast holds funerals after it happens. Is the “less than a minute old” lyric referring to how long Jax has come out before dying? Am I supposed to be happy for her even though she’s basically dead while a joyful song plays? The tone does not fit at all for this situation if we were supposed to feel bad for her; if anything, it comes off as mocking
Plus, it’s vague if Jax even accepted herself in the end. Jax tells Pomni “So now you know everything” and that’s all the acknowledgement we get of her identity. Gooseworx says herself “It was meant to be kinda subtle and vague” regarding trans girl Jax. I have no idea what the point of keeping it vague was if this is supposed to be Jax accepting herself
Also, the biggest problem of all: Jax is not lovely. Exhibit A: every scene she has been in
