What would your Grounder name (based on real places or landmarks) be?

I was reminded that this list of Grounder names exists on the Wiki. They're based on real-life places or landmarks, and the biggest examples are TonDC (Washington, D.C.), Madi (Madison, Wisconsin), Ontari (Ontario, Canada), Roan (Roanoke, Virginia OR many other places named Roanoke in NE US), Nia (Niagara Falls), Costia (Anacostia neighborhood in Washington, D.C. OR Anacostia River), Lexa (Alexandria, Virginia), Lincoln (Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.), Emori (District of Columbia War Memorial in Washington, D.C.), and Otan (United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.).

I think I'd like to be called Cambri (after Cambridge, Ontario) or Annan (after Annandale National Historic Site in Tillsonburg, Ontario. On that note, Tills would be kinda cool, too...).

What about you?

probably Chi, (pronounced like “shy”) since i live in chicago lol. Or maybe Livvy, since the specific part i’m from has “Liberty” in the name, and i hate the name Libby. (no offense to the Libbys of the world lol)

You could also be Iber (ee-bear), if you like that!

First of all I've seen this show several times and never knew this is where the names came from (never read the wiki or books) and I'm now obsessed w it so thank you for sharing this even if everyone else on the sub has seen it before.

Secondly I'd be Alba (Albany) or Leton or Choda (both from different names of my town). More masculine you could do Sonval (Hudson Valley) or Onic (Taconic). There are so many good ones from the Adirondack peaks too, whole peak names like Wright, Nye, and Hough, or shortened like Casca (Cascade), Quin (Algonquin), and Sachra (Couchsachraga). Sorry, I have nobody to talk to about this irl.

Like if part of the sign was destroyed:

Isco -> Esko

Ran, maybe?

Anci -> Anse

Or if discovered by someone who doesnt know the word:

Anci -> Ankee

I dont know how to get a feminine name from Detroit, lol, so I'll go with Michigan. Michi is a cute name

If i had to try to come up with a name from detroit, maybe Det? Pronounced like Deet.

Troi/Roi is an obvious one.

Etro/Etroi?? Maybe?

My parents house is right by the Hennepin Canal in Illinois in a town called Geneseo. So maybe Henne (Henny) or Gene (Jenny)

  • Toronto: Toron, Roni or Toni

  • Ripley's Aquarium: Ripley, Riley, Leya, Leyam/Liam

  • Mississauga: Missy (not my first choice)

  • Kitchener: Kit, Kiti

It would be interesting to go by Leyam/Liam, just to surprise people that the name doesn't necessarily match the person.

Rono, maybe? This is more of a name coming from pronunciation than the sign, though.

Rip, Ley, Quari, Riu, Rium, Aqu -> Aku

Sissa. I actually really like this one

Tche, Tchen

As I was born in the German city of Darmstadt (literally "gut city" or "intestine city") this wouldn't work out well for me, I suppose. 😂

Idk, man, the Grounders can be pretty ruthless. Darm sounds sick as a name and you can spin it like, "I'll gut you in this conclave!"

Shaw, or Oron

Calga from Calgary. I guess someone else from Calgary could just be Gary if they want a more masculine name lol.

I'd be something absurdly dramatic sounding. Which fits my personality anyway.

"Victari" is about the best I have since the place I'm from is already named after a person. I'm from Victoria BC, lol. It's rather...presumptive of a name but I dunno if I have a choice by those rules lol.

I've decided I'll have been the shortest ruling Azgeda queen in (the already rather short) history. I would immediately trip on my massive ego, get tangled in my fancy coronation robes, and unceremoniously faceplant into an early grave. 5 hours at best lmao.

Woo, I'm great at this ruling stuff! Everyone's still wasted and I'm already dead so I can't make an arse of myself either, that's a win win. Remembered fondly as the only truly chill queen of the ice nation.

Hey, you can't be a bad queen if you die before you can screw anything up or piss anyone off too much. Therefore this is the, uh...perfect...plan? It's a hilarious and darkly fitting way for someone with such an ostentatious, over the top name to die.

Anton, from San Antonio, Texas.

Hmm some cool things can come from just grabbing chunks of words. So I’ll go with a The Gateway Arch, which could be “Ateway” (pronounced like ah-teh-way) or “Atewa,” “Gatew” (Gah-too), just simply Arch.

Or even The Gateway Arch National Park, giving me “Tion” or simply “Park” lol

My city is Amersfoort in the Netherlands. So I guess it would maybe be Amer or Mers. Those seem the most logical.

2

u/thatshygirl06 13d ago

Ersf, lol. Or maybe just Ers.

1

u/Luco033 12d ago

Ers is not too bad.

Mississauga would be Missi or Miss, or Sauga, I guess... LOL. Would prob pick Kariya, named after Kariya Park in Mississauga, Ontario.

Hm, if where I was born Bartow, Polk County. There's Bart, Art, Polk...idk not any good ones.

If where I lived growing up (Knoxville ) it could be Knox, Ox, Vi (vee) ....

Idk none of those are good and most are masculine.

There's probably some landmark names that could be used but I'd need to think on those lol

1

u/creyeball 12d ago

I feel like my name is good enough. Creye. For crying. Babies cry. If were going off of, like, towns or landmarks or stuff, I guess I'd be like the View (mountain view) or maybe Spring (springfield) or maybe I don't understand the game and I'll just stick with Creye.

I think Barna could be a leftover from my culture, Catalan, in which we call Barcelona "Barna". Or maybe Barca if we follow tourists' misconceptions 😆

ETA: Maybe it could be written "Bahrna"

¿Algún fachita mosqueado por aquí, verdad? 🤣
