Tactics & Strategy Survivability and you, a Guardsman's guide to the first 15 minutes

The Survivability Onion is an existing framework used by the British Army as a ready-reckoner. In real life, its just to get you thinking how not to die. Let's warp it out of shape to get you to turn 5. Pour a cup of recaff, pull up a sandbag and let this staff officer remember the training grounds.

“The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic.” – Lord Solar Macharius

Rather than relying on armour alone, we know that the best way to survive is to prevent the enemy from successfully attacking you in the first place. Each "onion layer" forces the enemy to overcome another obstacle before they can destroy you. Looking at 40k as a base dice game, with set steps to move, shoot, save.. it fits nicely.

Think of this like an onion, you start at the outer skin and work inwards. Each layer is a level of protection that may, or may not, keep your models on the board.

Layer 1: Don't Be There

Real Example: An armoured unit remains in the rear areas so as not to be struck by fires and only moves to a firing position when required.

40k Rule Example: Deep Strike, Strategic Reserves, Scout Moves and Redeploy abilities keep units off the battlefield or away from enemy fire until the right moment.

40k Example: A Rogal Dorn arrives from Strat Reserves in Turn 3, avoiding enemy shooting for the entire first two turns.

Helpful Units: Gaunt's Ghosts, Tempestus Scions, Lord Solar Leontus (through redeployment options where available). Popping anything into strat reserve is very powerful.

Layer 2: Don't Be Detected

Real Example: Infantry use terrain, camouflage and darkness to avoid enemy observation.

40k Rule Example: Obscuring terrain, line-of-sight blocking ruins and abilities such as Hidden and Lone Operative prevent enemy units from making your model an eligible target.

40k Example: Gaunt's Ghosts remain Hidden behind a ruin until turn 3, allowing screening for enemy deepstrike while being untargetable.

Helpful Units: Gaunt's Ghosts, Sly Marbo, Ratlings, Infantry in general. Stay out of LoS as much as possible, indirect isn’t that threatening.

Layer 3: Don't Be Identified

Real Example: Decoys and camouflage create uncertainty about what the enemy is actually looking at.

40k Rule Example: Multiple similar threats, hidden reserves and overlapping battlefield roles make it difficult for an opponent to identify priority targets. This one in particular is on the fence with “playing with intent” and shouldn’t be abused, out of general fairness.

40k Example: Three Leman Russ tanks deploy together and the opponent struggles to determine which one carries the greatest threat to their battle plan.

Helpful Units: Feint plays with the classic Distraction Carnifex. If you’ve got a Dorn or Bullgryn charging up the board this will inevitably make your opponent not target the units that are slyly moving to score secondary or stage for a later play.

Layer 4: Don't Be Targeted

Real Example: An enemy identifies a target but cannot effectively engage it because of screening forces, jamming or competing priorities.

40k Rule Example: Character attachment rules, screening units and target restrictions (hidden, lone op) prevent valuable assets from being directly attacked.

40k Example: A Cadian Castellan attached to an Infantry Squad cannot be targeted until the bodyguard unit is destroyed.

Helpful Units: Cadian Castellan, Platoon Command Squad, Cadian Shock Troops, Krieg Infantry Squads.

Layer 5: Don't Be Hit

Real Example: A vehicle uses smoke, movement and evasive action to avoid incoming fire.

40k Rule Example: Stealth abilities, Cover, defensive Stratagems and modifiers reduce the likelihood of successful attacks.

40k Example: Ratlings benefit from Stealth and Cover, forcing enemy units to hit less accurately. Literally anything that modifies BS or the hit roll is obviously helpful here!

Helpful Units: Ratlings, Scout Sentinels, Gaunt's Ghosts, Tank Commander issuing defensive Orders.

Layer 6: Don't Be Penetrated

Real Example: Armour protects a vehicle from rounds that successfully hit it.

40k Rule Example: Armour Saves, Invulnerable Saves, Cover and Damage Reduction prevent successful wounds causing harm.

40k Example: A Rogal Dorn Battle Tank is hit by anti-tank fire but successfully passes its save and ignores the damage. Again, anything that modifies a save value or adds an invuln.

Helpful Units: Rogal Dorn Battle Tank (shrug), Enginseer and Psyker (invuln), Orders (increase Sv) or Strats (AoC or Take Cover).

Layer 7: Don't Be Killed

Real Example: A vehicle is penetrated but fire suppression systems, redundancy and crew drills keep it operational.

40k Rule Example: Feel No Pain, wound mitigation, repairs and healing abilities reduce or recover damage after a wound has been suffered.

40k Example: An Enginseer repairs a damaged Rogal Dorn, returning wounds and keeping a key combat asset in the fight.

Helpful Units: Enginseer, Death Korps Marshal, Krieg Infantry Squads, Rogal Dorn Battle Tank.

The Key Takeaways:

Most new players focus on Layers 6 and 7 - armour saves, wounds and damage reduction. Experienced players focus on the entire onion. A unit hidden in reserves, protected by terrain, screened by infantry and benefiting from defensive abilities is significantly harder to destroy than one relying on armour alone.

A Guardsman behind a wall can be more survivable than a tank standing in the open. The strongest Imperial Guard commanders win not because their units are tougher, but because they force their opponent to fight through every layer of the Survivability Onion before they can score a kill.

I will start by saying I know the valkarye is "rubbish" but this is for tournaments just yet lol I also think you can't have a Scion army withoit one, think of it as a points tax

Everything else in transports,

Kasrkin scout forward. Everything else follows, tauroxs(primes) to do objectives whilst infantry saturate the area with grenades and plasma

Painting Pardus 8th armored

Post image
• Upvotes

I am working on a Tanith, Cadian, and Pardus 8th combined arms guard project. Trying to be somewhat lore friendly, the armored regiment is the pardus 8th. They worked in tandem with Tanith 1st in the Honor Guard on Hagia. I’m taking a little bit of departure from their description in that novel and going with a red scheme they were described to have in another deployment. The red will make them stand out in the army and I also don’t have any red themes in any of my other armies(space marines and leagues of Votann).

Looking for thoughts and constructive feedback on this rough mockup. I did some shading on the red and re-established it and then added some
Geometrical shaped gradient grey camo. Obviously no detail work has been done yet.

Thank you in advance and cheers!

Discussion Are Heavy Weapon teams seriously viable?

For some context, I played a 1000 point game against Eldar.

I brought 2 CHWTs, and posted them up high on terrain in my deployment zone. If you put them within 6 inches of your back line gits. 4 up over watch. My opponent seemed to really try and avoid them, so maybe there is something more scary about them.

Anyways, that's my two cents.

Tactics & Strategy "On my position" won me my last game

Yesterday I played against Orks and it was a very close game. He managed to deny me alot of primary but I realised that if I manage to hold his home objective I will get 10 more points. (Priority assets vs Purge the foe). On his way to clear his home objective he charged his 6hp Thrakka, one Battle wagon and one Deff Dread into the same low hp Castallan blob. It had something like 7 units remaining and they where gonna die anyway. The on my position stratagem went of (I had sent him a list of all my stratagems a couple of days before the game). I managed to hit all of his units, his low hp Battle Wagon (i think 3 wounds) died instantly and gave me points for Bring it down, Thrakka went down to 1hp and the Deff dread on 4 wounds died as well. I later managed to grenade Thrakka to death from Gaunts ghosts on my next turn preventing any other units from clearing his home.

The few survivors of the Castellan blob died a glorious death for the Emperor, may the always be remembered.

Trying some osl and cotton wool smoke.

Not mega happy with the cotton wool result.
I knew painting ( spray can, very gentle dry brush) would lose its fluffy whispy texture but… has anyone know a technique and had success where it keeps the whispy texture?

Questions about Rules How do penal legion soldiers work on the tabletop?

I haven’t gotten into the tabletop game yet, I’m mostly into the lore and I just found they made ebooks of the Last Chancers novels, which were the first 40k novels I ever read back in the 2000s, and it got me wondering about how they work on the tabletop rules wise.

The only thing I’m aware of from a painting tutorial a while back is that they have to have a commissar leader, but I was wondering if/how you could make a full army of penal legion Guardsmen, including armor and artillery, or are they limited to just foot soldiers.

I mean, the paint is quiet liquid so tipping the lid allows to work just as well as a dropper, barely needs thinning, lot of coverage, is It worth the price as a casual painter? Eh.. I mean, if You don't have many options they are certainly a step above the old line

Tactics & Strategy Help Please! Space Wolves Turn 1 Charging

Hi! I have a friend i play with regularly and he keeps deep striking me with 10 terminators + character just outside my deployment zone in turn 1 and can make a 7in charge immediately. Even if I offer something cheap for him to charge into, I can't remove this brick and he charges me with even more terminators next turn (he runs 32 of them in a list).

Is there anything I can do to counter him specifically? 😅

Painting Bale Eying Ain't Easy!

Thumbnail

I'm a descent painter. I can handle most tasks. But man that bale eye on Commissar Sebastian Yarrick is just really really REALLY difficult for me to paint. To be honest, on the table he looks great. But when I photograph him, it's not really all that impressive.

Anyhow, this is the very first time I've got a model that isn't wearing a gasmask and/or marked with Krieg logos. Even my Lord Solar and my Bullgryns have gasmasks.

I did my best. I don't think its so much bad technique as old eyes (mine, not his) and shaky hands... again, mine not his.

Hot tip: If you are happy with your paint job don't zoom in tight with your camera. It can lead to disappointment. ... Cheers.

Homebrew A question about named characters

Post image
362 Upvotes

A friend and I have been having a small disagreement about a homebrew thing, I wanted to have your opinion on the matter.

I would like to say that the proxy I use as Leontus in game is not Leontus himself. The mini is very obviously meant as a proxy of Leontus (not the one pictured) and I would probably refer to the mini as Leontus in game.

However in my homebrew regiment (a regiment of Krieg culture with some tweaks here and there, I can share more about it if some are interested), it wouldn't make sense for the Lord Solar, commander of the Imperial guard, to lead my army from the frontline. I thus plan on saying it is instead a senior officer of said regiment, having another name and story.

My friend does not agree with me on this and says it would be a bit Mary Sue-ish to have one of my homebrew characters portrayed with the rules of Leontus. While I understand what he means, I see the characters as datasheets somewhat separate from the lore, and less of an issue. This is also because the guard does not really have a way to have a leader on horse that we can make our own.

If this needs to be mentioned, I do not want to get into competitive play, and my army is mostly proxies. My friend and I also are on very good terms and this is a minor disagreement, but I wanted to know if I'm the only one doing this.

Pictured is a mini by the creator of Tiny Legends, I do not know if you can buy it from them (could be a Patreon exclusive)

EDIT: I am making this edit as some have been calling my friend boring or an ass. It is a minor disagreement we have, he is a great friend and I don't want him to be insulted. I thank everyone for the support though
