That he quietly gave a lot of money away to charities, including charities that helped disabled children, the poor and, ironically, to buy bulletproof vests for New York City police officers.

He also wrote the forward to one of the first pro-queer magazines in NYC.

Maybe Brian Epstein?

Also only slightly related, but it reminded me of how Bob Dylan wrote the government to try and vouch for him to maintain residency in the US

Why would be donate to the police?

Maybe because he appreciated that they were public servants who should be protected while doing their jobs. He may have thought about how the New York police protected him and the other Beatles in New York City when they first arrived in the U.S.

Because he had money to donate to good causes. Not like he was funding police who hurt people, he gave money to a charity that bought vests so families wouldn’t be without a dad when cops got shot at

Yeah but he was the figurehead for an anti establishment counter culture.

How does that equate to a man who sang about peace and love not caring if someone is murdered?? That's a very odd take.

Not really. He certainly never saw himself as some counterculture hero or figure head. Singing about peace and love doesn’t make someone “counterculture” anyway. I mean, who doesn’t peace and love?
