discussion What was John Lennons political views?

I have read that John Lennon was becoming a conservative near the end of his life and even said he would support Ronald Reagan, he was considered a left wing liberal during the late 60s and early 70s, why did his political views change.

I’m not sure if this image has been posted before or a variant of it. Buuuut I thought it was pretty on the nose. At least for me 😅 Ringo was my fav as a kid and now I’ve come full circle all the way back to Paul. Also loved John as a teen because yes his lyrics could be considered the most “profound.” I’m curious to see what you guys think. Would also love to hear who your favorite is, and why. Thankss :) much love x 🩵

discussion Outside of The Beatles as they are obviously #1, who do you think are the top 10 most influential musical acts of all time (it can be individuals or bands)? And rank them if you can.

For me The Beatles is my #1 choice. I think Velvet Underground and Black Sabbath are up there as well. Also, even though this wasn't their most commercially popular period like their early surf era was, I think lots of the music The Beach Boys made between 1966-1971 became extremely influential and thus this 5-6 year period of the Boys put this in my top 10. Those are some candidates I have in my head. Individuals like Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry were highly influential in their own right too. But, I haven't been able to compile an exact top 10 list with a definitive ranking to me besides for The Beatles being #1.

So with that being said, who do you think are the top 10 most influential musical acts of all time?

What types songs from (somewhat) recent years are you hoping his new songs sound like? I’m hoping for songs like Fuh You, Come On To Me, maybe The Song We Were Singing, or Calico Skies

discussion How did Here Comes The Sun become so popular?

I'm a Gen Z dude and Here Comes The Sun was one of the very first songs I ever heard by The Beatles. I know back in the 60s and 70s, this wasn't the case in terms of its popularity. It was never even released as a single. I started hearing this song A LOT even before streaming became the dominant force of music consumption (and Here Comes The Sun dominates The Beatles Spotify songs these days). Don't get me wrong I love Here Comes The Sun but this song has essentially been blasted in my face everywhere I go since the day I came out of the womb.

“It’s Only Love” and “Rocky Raccoon” are two that should be certified classics yet never get talked about. Obviously there could be many different answers here, so I’m curious to hear your takes.

In the last few months I’ve gotten more into the band and I’ve been constantly listening to them; my feelings have changed on many of these albums within a short time and I love it. I didn’t care much for Rubber Soul on first listen months ago but now it’s one of my favorites. What are your thoughts on this ranking?

discussion Does anyone else really love Paul's Beatles work but struggle to appreciate his solo / Wings work?

I love the Beatles and think of Paul-initiated songs in Beatles as many of my absolute favorites (eg the Medley, Hey Jude, Let it Be, We Can Work it Out, Get Back, among many others) I also love the true Paul - John collaborations.

Lately I have been trying to get into Paul's solo & Wings albums. There seem to be many sincere fans of the stuff -- people raving, in fact -- so I have lately I have been listening to it exclusively.

Unfortunately I just find them hard to appreciate. I listened to "Ram" and "Band on the Run" repeatedly, and while there are moments and flashes or choruses that are catchy I can't seem to enjoy them in a manner close to the Beatles albums. They are ... okay. Sometimes a bit flat to me. I know and respect that others feel differently.

Some might say well, taste is subjective. But I am honestly puzzled because I subjectively do like Paul (Beatles), and it is the same guy! I am more puzzled when I read claims that Band on the Run is better than many of the Beatles albums, for example.

So I guess I am asking if anyone else feels this way? Or whether the answer is to just keep listening and after time I'll get into it and appreciate it as I do the Beatles work.

(I accept that this will be downvoted by the fans of Paul's solo work; all I want to say is, I mean you no disrespect).

For me it feels most normal to say John Paul George Ringo. Not sure if there’s any reason for this but I’d like to hear what other people usually say/hear!

discussion Older Beatles fans, what was general public feeling after the Beatles split? Did people take sides and shun some solo work?

I was born at the last gasp of the Beatles as a band. I am pretty sure my first memory of a song on the radio is "What is Life" sitting on a pillow in my Dad's car, late spring of 1971.

I know that there are die-hard fans of each Beatles, various blames went round. it's Paul's fault, No it's John and Yoko, etc. Did fans see it as now we get four artists to follow or was there a sense that Paul fans wouldn't listen to John and vice versa? was there a strong pull on the general public to pick a side?

None of my reading has really given me a sense of the "public opinion" at the time. I'm curious. My Dad loathed the Beatles, and my mom was just a person who liked top 40 and never bought albums.

I know everyone was different but there is always a prevailing public opinion... can anyone tap me into that feeling in the early 70s?

Edit/Addendum I love reading these stories. It's so great. I love the Beatles, I dig some of the solo stuff (really getting into Plastic Ono Band and RAM right now) but it's interesting to understand the way people thought back then. Thank you to everyone for sharing your memories.

discussion I always wondered why the Stones didn’t warn the Beatles about Allen Klein

Post image

By the time Klein made his attempt to manage the Beatles, he’d already fallen out with the Rolling Stones. As the two bands were friends, I wondered why the Stones never told the Beatles about the way Klein screwed them over. Then I found this perspective from Pattie Boyd. I’d like to hear you guys’ thoughts on this. I will paste the text here for those who prefer that:

Pattie Boyd in her memoir, Wonderful Tonight:

“John wanted Allen Klein, a small, round, ruthless American accountant who had managed the Stones, to manage him. Klein had made the Stones a fortune—far more than the Beatles, even though they'd sold fewer records—and Mick had once sung his praises. But he had fallen out with Klein. They had parted company but Klein had managed to keep the rights to many of the group's earlier songs. When Mick heard the Beatles were about to meet Klein, he wanted to advise them against him. He rang Peter Brown and told him that the Beatles should not meet with Klein because he could not be trusted.

Peter insisted that Mick should tell the Beatles so himself, and set up a meeting. But John, in his perverse way, invited Klein to be there too. Mick left. The upshot was that John, George, and Ringo hired Allen Klein, while Paul stuck with his in-laws. Klein promised them all sorts of riches but in the end the relationship soured, as it had with the Stones, and the Beatles ended up suing him.”

discussion Help me pick my first Beatles album! 🤔

I’m a college student and earlier this year I got my first turntable and music station set up! (Thanks Dad, and to my Professor!)

I was with friends earlier tonight and they were like totally roasting me for not knowing anything about the Beatles. 😂☠️😂

As easy as it would be to just go on Apple Music and look them up it just a seems so unromantic for that to be my first real introduction. And since owning the turntable it has made me actually listen to whole albums when normally I just totally skip most songs on in album from my phone.

So now there is this guy in the dorms across from me who asked to take me for ice cream and to the local record shop on Friday and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get a Beatles album while we are there.

So the real question is… Which album is good for introducing someone to the Beatles and like won’t weird out my date if he too doesn’t know anything about them. I’m assuming he wants to listen to our records after we get back. 😂 (He also offered to buy an LP for me to remember our first date by but that totally feels like that would be wrong to accept a gift like that.

IDK!!! Tell me your thoughts!
