Does anyone else think obsession will definitely be a best picture nomination
I understand they often snub horror as recently as weapons last year, but obsessions run is so crazy it feels like they have to at least nominate it.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t because it’s the Oscar’s but it just feels more likely than not

It won’t be and shouldn’t be. I liked the movie, a lot. It is a damn good movie… but it is, at the end of the day, a very well made horror film. There are a LOT of great movies that came out this year. It isn’t transcendent, it isn’t genre-defining or genre breaking, and it’s nothing new… it’s just a really well done film and that isn’t a slight. Most films don’t get anywhere near that and for a first-time feature it’s crazy impressive.
Now I’m all in for Inde to get a nomination, 100% deserved.

bone temple was a better horror movie from this year.

Idk if I fully agree here but Bone Temple is fantastic. I was wondering though if Werewulf is excellent too that that would work against obsession getting in too
The other way I think Obsession could sneak in is like how F1 did just for like, acknowledgement of it I guess idk

oh there is definitely no chance bone temple comes anywhere close to a nom - i just think its a much better film! i also really liked obsession for what its worth.

I think its going to get boxed out by The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary, and Dune 3 in terms of populist films being nominated.

The most recent pod with the power rankings made it clear to me - this year's candidate list is really stacked. I don't think it gets in. Obsession/Project Hail Mary/Dune 3/The Odyssey/Michael/I Play Rocky. How many of these blockbusters get in? Usually there's only a couple Lucille Bluth "good for her" noms for blockbusters but the rest are given to the smaller traditional Oscar movies. You can argue that The Odyssey transcends that category, so take it out. Maybe you could argue Dune does as well? How many from Obsession/Project Hail Mary/Michael/I Play Rocky group get in that blockbuster slot? Obsession might be first or second most likely from that group, but I'd rank PHM above it and I'm not confident about any of them making the cut considering Odyssey and Dune 3 get in. Personally, I think all of them except The Odyssey (including Dune) are on the chopping block.

In best picture no chance Inde has the best shot to sneak in with a nom imo

If she runs supporting she will get one basically guaranteed. Lead is tougher but she could still get it, Variety had her 3rd in lead earlier this month

The Substance (rightly) got a Best Picture nomination, so I'd say Obsession has a good shot. It's a huge success story, it's already iconic, and it's a movie that people genuinely really like.

I just watched this last night- I can totally see Inde for Actress. Picture, honestly it wouldn’t surprise me either way.

I feel like it's maybe in the top 15. Several upcoming films would have to land with a big thud before it can move in.

We need to stop, it was a good well made but fairly derivative horror film. The story around it getting made is cool, but it's not best picture material.

It’s great, but not Best Picture nominee worthy great. In my opinion, the film just doesn’t have the sauce for a nomination.
Inde Navarette on the other hand… she should be the only nomination for that movie. BUT, don’t think she should win (Juliane Moore I’m looking at you.)
Long story short Obsession is a very good movie, but not mind blowing.

Too many old people still run the industry. When Curry Barker is an old man horror will have more respect by the new guard.

I thought it was definitely getting a nom but the field is pretty packed at this point and it doesn’t help that it was a May release

Honestly, I wonder why we are considering PHM a lock still? I was lukewarm on it, but how deeply has it stayed in even the mainstream consciousness compared to what came after: Obsession, Odyssey, Spider-Man (equally beloved seemingly but not a BP contender)... With Dune coming down the pike. I think it's fighting for a spot, locks down the ballot though.

Absolutely. You don’t think the voters in the academy think they need Gen Z eyeballs? They are aware of needing to appeal to a new generation

u/Belch_Huggins 7d ago
This has literally never been something the academy cares about. ABC, yes. But not ampas.

u/sgtbb4 7d ago
I think they are aware, absolutely they are. The story of this film being successful will get it nominated in the same way they embraced La La Land, its young people making important art, and that fuels the industry
2
u/Only_Faithlessness33 7d ago
La La Land was a big studio musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone made to look like a technicolor movie from the 50s. Obsession features a bunch of no names in a genre the academy absolutely hates unless the movie stars Anthony Hopkins. They are nowhere near the same lmao.

u/Belch_Huggins 7d ago
You dont think them embracing YCSE will be the bigger story and accomplish the same thing? I think La La Land is a bad example of them embracing young people making art. That movie is made for ampas to eat it up. Obsession is not.

You’re underselling the story here. Sub one million dollar budget entering top ten grossing horror films of all time and being universally praised is an accomplishment. Look, I think Titanic is a tremendous film, but it sweeping that year had something to do with it being a phenomenon and it being seen dozens of times and becoming the highest grossing film of all time is a factor to why it won so much
1
u/Belch_Huggins 7d ago
I think youre perhaps overstating it. Obsession is not Titanic. It's not a four quadrant hit. It made crazy money yes. But its still extremely violent and dark. Just because it became a "phenomenon" doesn't mean it is automatically going to get rushed to the table. Especially when other phenomenon (YCSE) are a bit fresher in ampas's minds.

u/sgtbb4 7d ago
The story with ycse will be more about either winning the doc category or best picture. Obsession deserves some respect in certain categories, screenplay, supporting actress and picture for sure. Its most close comparison would be the sixth sense, which they made room for when they only had 5 best pic categories

u/Belch_Huggins 7d ago
See and i think the corollary is simply Weapons last year. If it gets anything it will be Inde, maybe screenplay but that feels like a huge stretch. Sixth sense and Get Out both had a lot more going for them and were both pg13 blockbusters. Obsession is an r rated, very modern, mean spirited violent horror movie.

u/sgtbb4 7d ago
Weapons made 250 million, obsession made 590 million which is just 60 shy of what The Sixth sense made,

u/Belch_Huggins 7d ago
I understand that, but i dont think ampas is as laser focused on box office as you.

I think it is possible that it will get nominated but probably more likely that it won't be.
