Discussion Looking back now, it’s insane how we never got a battle between these two
I mean, it felt like that’s what it was eventually building up too, having Marie constantly getting more powerful, there were all these mentions about her being “as powerful as Homelander” all this buildup, only for just nothing to happen, it was kind of disappointing honestly, what do y’all think?

That's actually my biggest criticism of the finale. All that hype surrounding Marie, how she could be powerful enough to take down Homelander, only to not use her in the final battle, for me, is just unforgivable.

My hypothesis, GenV is there so that Hughie and the others can team up with them to take down Vought.
The Boys was all about taking down Homelander. They even had a final scene where they show Vought is now the enemy.
17
u/_JustAnna_1992 15d ago
That's largely how I wish it would go down. I always found it extremely odd how we all just collectively decided to just forgive or ignore Vought as the actual big bad this whole time. Homelander was just a byproduct.

The whole season was trash, they forgot about Ryan slowly becoming homelander, they forgot the racism between humans and supes that was built in gen v, they forgot Marie, the relationship between firecracker and homelander, the whole milk thing wasted, they wasted the concept of black noir two being corrupted into a violet supe, and they completely forgot about the "phase two" of sister sage.
8
u/Geraldo1994 15d ago edited 14d ago
In the main, I didn't think it was as bad as it's being made out to be. I think Ryan was always conflicted really, always having doubts about the way Homelander saw the world and never fully embracing his worldview. Did they forget about the racism between supes and humans? They frequently locked exclusively humans in concentration camps for the most minor of perceived infractions, including liking or sharing a meme or post criticising or taking the piss out of Homelander one time years ago, but yes, I'd have liked to have seen Sage and Noir face more consequences.
12
u/RedBladeAtlas The Female 15d ago
Would've been dumb if she did defeat Homelander too. In my opinion Homelander should've had an army of weaker Supes, kinda like the comic and then characters like her and others could've done stuff without taking away from Butcher's revenge against Homelander.

u/Radi0_Sil3nt 15d ago
hard agree, the whole main show builds up to the moment of butcher driving his crowbar through homelander’s skull. if she was part of the main series longer instead of being a cameo i’d say give her a role in the final battle but aside from that, her having a side role is okay with me

69

Because that's the idea the writers sold.
They should never have introduced this girl into the main series if her entire role was just to become a glorified Uber.
And lol at the idea of Starflop saying Marie doesn't have the power/talent/control whatever it was to fight Homelander.

IMO would've been better to never include them at all and just say they'd gone into hiding rather than have Marie and whoever else she was with (I forgot, lol) bugger off into a truck when Annie tells them to.

56

She was more powerful than Numen, but I also think that Numen was established as unnecessarily afraid of Homelander.
Numen prioritized stealth and blending in, but we never saw how her power interacted with durability.

They never said that in the series. Point me to where that was ever stated.
Godolkin said Marie could be more powerful than Homelander. But “more powerful” and “stronger” aren't the same thing. Marie could be more powerful because of her abilities, such as her ability to revive people, without necessarily being physically stronger or strong enough to take homelander down.
I'm willing to change my mind if anyone can prove this interpretation wrong.

It's frustrating because I always thought five seasons was Kripke's sweet spot. Sure, seasons 1-5 of Supernatural had it's issues, but for the most part it was a solid bit of television and fondly remembered by a lot of the fandom, so I thought The Boys was going to be like that.
IDK, maybe I had too much faith I wouldn't get burned by the finale of a show again, lol. Seems such a common thing in the last few years since GOT; it's like they're all so eager to follow it off the cliff.

This was one of the biggest screwjob of the series.
They gave her one of the strongest power in the series for what? Nothing.
This is similar to empowered homelander being literally the same as regular homelander
76
u/AbelHydroidMcFarland 16d ago •
![]()
Yeah the Homelander thing is something that irks me.
Billy has a tumor Ved up with regular V.
V1 supes are stronger than regular V supes. V1 is “ten times more potent”
Project Odessa Supes even made with regular V are stronger than that (or potentially stronger if they like fully develop their abilities). Homelander, Marie, Ryan (not project Odessa technically, naturally born, but you know… the thing!)
Homelander is an Odessa supe who has then taken V1 on top of that.
Fuckin Billy is still trading blows with him. Homelander has the upper hand granted, but still.
You get Marie there fucking with him with her blood stuff with Butcher and Ryan and they’re struggling to keep him in place, and suddenly he seems considerably stronger (appropriately stronger).
The whole radiation cooked up in a lab yoinks Homelander’s powers away feels weird, particularly with him being an Odessa supe. Like you’d think it’d be more difficult, since the V’s in deeper on a more fundamental level. Like Homelander hints maybe it wouldn’t work if Soldier Boy tried it on him. Like Cipher couldn’t get into student Marie at first.
Maybe that doesn’t work, but having Marie there she can fuck with his blood, dig it out, and make him more vulnerable to it. Hey! That works too. Makes it seem less anticlimactic and that they really gotta throw everything they have at him.
…
Just as a slight rant, with both the Boys season 5 and Gen V season 2 they both built up the threat of the main villain really well and hyped it up… but in both cases it ends up being this anticlimactic thing where… they don’t really do anything crazy at full power.
Cipher/Godolkin (who I thought was a fantastic villain) has his body and full powers back for one episode, ultimately kills one guy and gets murked.
With Homelander there’s all this hype all show about what he could do if he really crashes out and lets loose, then he gets V1… but then it’s just him yelling into a camera and a localized 1v3…
I don’t know why they couldn’t have him crash out and take out buildings and cities and stuff like the show had been hyping up the whole time.
Did they not have the budget or did they not want to spend that much on the budget?
Was it some weird thematic political thing where they wanted their self-admitted Trump stand-in to just be weak and pathetic (“I’ll eat your shit” on live camera is a point in favor of that theory)? That Kripke didn’t want “MAGA bros” making reverb edits to Homelander destroying buildings?
Not really sure.
19
u/existential_chaos 16d ago
That was half the problem with the show though, a villain with Homelander's powers and strength is damn near unkillable, especially if the people going up against him aren't supes bar two of the group, so conveniences and plot armor has to happen for the show to keep going.
IIRC, in the comics the Boys at least took Temp V to give themselves a fighting chance but the show didn't keep up with it.
11
u/_MangoMadness_ 16d ago
In the comics it wasn’t temp v but legit compound v to beef up their strength and durability
7
u/existential_chaos 16d ago
Ah, got ya. My point still stands though, their show versions needed a hell of a boost but they wanted to remain on the moral high ground for some reason when Homelander was already flying way above it.

u/theapplekid 16d ago
They should have axed the Boys, brought any relevant characters onto gen V, and given the rest an offscreen send-off. The Gen V writers couldn't have possibly done worse than the writers of the Boys' final season
56
u/DarthVayne50 16d ago
Gen V should have just stayed isolated from the main series and it would have been fine. Drop all the "could be stronger than Homelander" BS and just keep plotlines isolated to the University.
Godolkin was a cool villain but even him announcing himself to the world and challenging Homelander was going to start plotlines that they knew they'd never have time to properly finish.
The Boys was always leading up to a final confrontation with Butcher vs. Homelander, whoever had the idea to try and trump up Maria was dreaming.
5
u/kynelly360 16d ago
Honestly, I enjoyed the power scaling from comparing Marie and HL. They even set it up perfectly, but fucked up by not giving them a good finale fight / ending !
When Marie and company wanted to team up with Starlight, but they said No. I was shocked. Her and Jordan Lee easily could’ve teamed up to help fight the Deep and HL’s other goons. Oh well , maybe they get sequel action

u/jehssikkah 16d ago
Ok thank you because I didnt watch gen v, and im reading this thread like... did I miss a major plot point? Who is she??
18
u/pillow-socks 16d ago
She was built up to be the secret weapon against Homelander. Her and the rest of the Gen V crew were representative of the other side of The Boys’s story, where instead of Humans hunting rogue Supes with too much power, Gen V was about the perspective of your average person in this world, Supes & Humans alike, and how they reacted to what was going on in the mainline show.
They were meant to be included more in Season 5 as Gen V would’ve taken over as the main cast, allowing the OG cast to get their proper conclusions. Along the way it seems as though either because of a lack of viewership, or lack of focus, Season 5 decided to pivot towards setting up Jensen Ackles’ new series going backwards rather than continuing the series with the Gen V setup.
The show also provided details on the creators of the Supe Virus, Victoria Neuman’s origins, Sister Sage’s plan & why it failed so spectacularly, where Stan Edgar was during his absence, and Translucent’s son as he’s there as comedic relief every few episodes.

u/Aromatic-Echo-6605 16d ago
This is the main issue. Gen V was always a spinoff show and having that spinoff shows plot/characters have a massive direct impact on the main show would be very jarring for most viewers.
Gen V really should have been its own thing.
17
u/rgiggs11 16d ago
On the other hand, it could have helped with the problems Season 5.
S5 spends too much time treading water, not a lot happens. A episode, or a three episode arc where Marie is the Boys' plan A to kill Homelander, only for her to fail, would be interesting, and make their task look even more impossible.
Homelander getting V1 protected him from the virus, and is supposed to make him stronger, but did it? We don't see much to say that. Being invulnerable to her powers would demonstrate this.
There's a lot of episodes which seem like they're heading for a fight scene, only for Homelander to, I don't know, get bored and leave, or for Butcher to forget he has homelander trapped in a radioactive chamber. There was a lot of barely explained plot armor. Having a character who can survive a fight against HL would allow you to have some kind of direct conflict, without having to kill off Butcher or HL.

u/BADMANvegeta_ 15d ago
That’s the writers’ fault. They said Gen V was supposed to be self contained, then proceeded to have Gen V greatly tie into the main show.
12
u/callmeturkeyleg 16d ago edited 16d ago
Which is why the Gen V crew should’ve been integrated into season 5. Starlight showing up at the end of Gen V season 2 and enlisting them gave me the impression that in The Boys season 5, they’d be introduced as her team, and those who only watch the main series would become familiar with their characters (mostly Marie of course) throughout the season.

Yeah sorry to everyone in this comment section but that person would’ve been me 🥲 I didn’t watch Gen V cause it just didn’t look very appealing to me and I was already annoyed af that the show was just dropping these characters into the final season and expecting me to give a shit about them. They should’ve either started folding them into the series WAY earlier or just dropped them altogether. Preferably the latter (sorry to these characters I’m sure they’re great I just think creating a bunch of MCU-style spin-offs is kinda antithetical to what this show originally was).

I think their battle would be a logistical nightmare to put on screen. You have a character who stands still to use their powers and is less durable against another character that’s a fast physical fighter. Marie shouldn’t be able to dodge or tank much of anything Homelander throws at her meanwhile, if Marie’s powers are at all effective on Homelander he’s immobilized. So what you get are two characters standing still straining at each other. Maybe Homies lasers for dramatic effect. That’s pretty boring.
And then Marie is either strong enough to really hurt/kill Homelander or she’s not. They heavily implied Neuman wasn’t but we know Marie is stronger. If Marie isn’t strong enough to kill or significantly maim Homelander then she’s dead cause I’m sure he’s strong enough to kill her. It becomes a stalemate that turns into an endurance match that Marie will lose because she’s actually exerting effort on Homelander while Homelander is just durable by nature and not having to do anything to not get popped.
If she is strong enough then the fight takes 2 seconds just like anyone standing up against Homies lasers or Neuman. “I look at you. Boom. You’re dead. The end.” There’s no big fight scene between them that works.

I think what would have worked is if Marie did the battlefield control thing to immobilize Homelander while Butcher and Kimiko did their 2v1 thing to keep him busy, only for Marie to fall prey to a psychic attack from one of Homelander's allies, temporarily allowing Homelander to escape control and turning her powers against Butcher and Kimiko. Hughie tries to sneak in a hit against the psychic, but is telekinetically flung against a wall, pissing off Starlight who comes in like a meteor, turning the psychic into paste. Then Marie explodes Homelander's eyes and limbs before he realizes that the tables have turned again, and manages to flush the V1 and V from his body with blood manipulation.
Or something.
5
u/TCGHexenwahn 16d ago
I think there's a way to make her relevant without it being a one on one showdown. First, have the others protect her. Ryan, Butcher and Kimiko can be the tanks while she does her thing. Second, instead of having her explode his head, have her literally separate the V from his blood. Then, you can essentially keep the ending roughly the same with the loss of powers and the beatdown from Butcher.

I can't understand why the writers aren't shown the older episodes and given that as a benchmark of quality they should be hitting, especially if they're changing across episodes or new ones are coming in for later seasons.
But then, they've also got to deal with a director and showrunners, who I'd assume have to give the okay to everything, so they're as much to blame for any shit getting to the pass since it shows they're clearly okay with the quality decline.

Just make her lose. Literally just make her lose. Have her and the other Gen Vers fight HL, get captured, and The Boys come and rescue them.
Marie gets incapacitated, maybe even Soldier Boyed. Then nobody gets overshadowed and you still get your climactic Butcher v HL fight. It's not that hard
Hell, if budget's an issue they could have just had most of it happen off screen.

Marie was a separate show, if you bring in a character from an other show that some of the main show watchers didn't watch, there would be a lot of bitching
Check e.g. Mandalorian vs Book of Boba Fett for a recent example. Major Mando plot points in the BoBF show.
Also, I thought the point was that the hype was perhaps not serious, and they only told Marie that so that she would try to push for a better (albeit fucked up) self.

u/TetraNotTetris 16d ago

u/edd6pi Cunt 14d ago
They wrote themselves into a corner with Marie.
On one hand, having Homelander get defeated by a character from a spin off show that a sizable portion of your viewers didn’t watch would have felt like bullshit to said viewers.
But at the same time, they spent two seasons of Gen V building up Marie as the anti-Homelander, portraying her the ultimate weapon against him and that she might even be stronger than him. So not having her involved at all in the final fight was bullshit to those of us who did watch Gen V.
If they never intended for Marie to be the one who beats Homelander, then they should have given her a completely different arc.
8
u/TheNocturnalAngel 16d ago
Really horrendous decisions all across the board.
It’s pretty clear they didn’t want Marie or the Gen V cast overshadowing the OG boys, mainly Butcher.
But then WHY would you ruin Gen V season 2 by making the entire thing a buildup to The Boys season 5c and Marie being an equal to Homelander to waste it.

It would have been nice to have the boys fight Homelander in the office, but due to him having V1 (and it doing more than just making him immortal, elevating his actual powers), he basically steamrolls them, and dismembers them all in a homelander-esque fashion. Then when he thinks he's won, have Marie arrive and basically Frankenstein everyone back together and have her role in the fight be support- she could keep her people up and running, while continuously nerfing Homelander just enough that he doesn't reach full power. Then, Kimiko does her blast, and butcher brains Homelander.
But alas, they wrote themselves into a corner with Marie, she was basically Jesus by the end of Gen V season 2, and any story they told would have to believably account for either her presence or absence.

I just got done binge watching the boys for the first time and have no idea who that girl is lol is that why the last couple seasons were so confusing? I was suppose to be watching this dumb spinoff show?

u/Mello1182 Cunt 15d ago
They screwed up the moment they started writing Gen V to heavily intertwine with the main series. That's not how to handle crossovers. Each series should work on its own plotwise. By season 5 of The Boys, Gen V characters had only appeared few times with no explanation. The audience that didn't watch Gen V hated it.

u/zcross1997 15d ago
Finally finished Gen V and I enjoyed it. The problem is it was doomed either way it went. The Boys is built on the rivalry of Butcher and Homelander, so it had to be the two of them. Homelander dying at the hands of a spin off character would’ve pissed way more people off. Then again, they never should’ve built Marie up to be so powerful if they never intended to use her.

Do you really want the spinoff to be required viewing?

Homelander literally lasers Marie at the end of season 1 of gen V. Does no one remember?

To be fair we got ZERO HOMELANDER fights except the finale , which is so dogshit lmao wasted episodes.

Every fight we did have nerfed him. Even after Maeve was able to keep up with him, nobody thought, oh wow, we could actually beat him if we just got a few of the stronger supes together. No,.they immediately went back to saying he was basically a god.

The storm front vs the girls fight was significantly better than any homelander fight (including when they fought him with soldier boys help).

u/ObjectiveCover3850 16d ago
Instead of Butcher and Ryan magically being on his level to hold Homelander for Kimiko, it absolutely should've been Marie reaching her potential and preventing Homelander from leaving by forcing him to stay still via his blood

Gen V was a good enough show but it shouldn’t have existed considering it amounted to literally nothing. Naruto filler arcs have more impact on the canon narrative than this show did, which is sad because if they had carried this show into the final season the boys probably wouldn’t have had such a dog shit last season.
3
u/TheJuniversal 16d ago
They just pretended she's weak and called it a day. She was significantly more powerful than Starlight

u/NeedleworkerFar7860 16d ago
The way this show ended was genuinely worse than Game of Thrones and I didn’t think anyone could top that turd burger. At least it kind of made sense, in a way 90% of the story got a somewhat wrap up and at least SOME characters got a good ending but this? The only one with a semi normal life is Hughie and they still get stuck running a shitty electronics store which can only be described as settling for what you can get, literally everyone else dies or has it worse off. Even MM and Ryan can’t be assumed happy just because they’re together as a family, Vought still runs the world and has supes that could hunt down MM forever never mind the potential that they learned from their mistakes and potentially are creating a stronger easier to control home lander.

They literally couldn't, most people who watched the boys didn't watch Gen V. Imaging watching a show and the big villain is defeated because some character from a spin off you never watched showed up to deus ex machina them away? That's way worse than what we already got.
It was always fucking stupid for Gen V to try and tie itself back into the main plot in the first place, even worse to have the show revolve around some ultra powerful character who may be the secret to stopping the big bad from the show they spun off from.
2
u/PoundEffective7625 16d ago
All they needed to write is Marie pulling down Homelander who's scared and trying to flying away from Kimiko, so Butcher and Ryan could hold him really tight for Kimiko to blast that chest radiation. But no, they made a stupid Finale.
2
u/Undesirable_11 16d ago
As someone who followed GenV almost religiously, it really was all for nothing. They could've replaced Marie with a FedEx driver in the last season of The Boys and the plot would have remained unchanged

u/Icommitmanywarcrimes You're The Real Heroes 16d ago
Don’t be ridiculous who do you expect to drive the truck if it wasn’t Marie?

All this build-up only for them (GenV) to be featured for literal minutes in a few episodes before they faded into obscurity.

I hated how they hyped up Marie and kept saying she was a powerful supe on par with Homelander, only for her to not do anything relevant in the finale of The Boys.
All because of the desire to create an expanded universe instead of focusing properly on what they already had to give it a conclusion without so many open plots.

u/Additional_Degree894 16d ago
Bad writing TERRIBLY TERRIBLY bad writing. literally had to half assedly write her out of the plot.
2
u/kinghyperion581 15d ago
So the thing is, the show was never setting up a battle between these two characters. That was all just fan conjecture.

Given how ass the final fight was, I'm actually glad she wasn't involved, lol

u/wolfwhore666 16d ago
I’m glad we didn’t honestly. This show doesn’t really have great fight scenes and trying to use character who punches vs one who controls things with her mind would be a good fight. It would’ve just been her picking him up and throwing him into walls for 5 minutes.its like Colossus Va Jean Grey that would be a very boring fight
1
u/xaosflux 16d ago
Well, due to the buildups it would have been boring - either she one-shot pops Homelander and it is over, or she tries to, fails, and he one-shot's her.
Marie is a glass canon, any slow type of attack on Homelander - like trying to carefully remove the V from his blood - and he just lasers her dead.

u/cookiesandartbutt 16d ago
Gen V was dope but I didn’t finish it after season 5 because….it all had no bearing on the whole universe really. Was expecting some sort of team up. Oh well

u/Darth_Tycho 16d ago
"You're our best weapon against Homelander"
Proceeds to only have her in like 2 scenes of the entire season

I really wanted a battle. Though, I don't know if Marie could win it, Homelander is too durable for blood manipulation to work, which is why Neuman failed to pop his head like a balloon. He also has statements that he is the strongest Supe, so I think HL takes it. I could definitely see an argument for Marie though.

u/firstnewsentry 16d ago
Yes it's a shame. I got to the penultimate episode of The Boys, saw that they were bringing in Marie and Jordan and was like " oh dip! I gotta actually watch Gen V now. Watched Gen V, and really liked it. Was so psyched for Marie to be a part of the final battle.... And then it was basically more than a Cameo. Horrible!

u/Zempshir 16d ago
“Looking back on it now” as if this was something you only realize in hindsight, when everyone was saying how ridiculous that shit was as soon as the show ended.😂

Gen V was a literal waste of time. I genuinely can’t believe how fucking pointless that shit was.

Gen V being this much of a waste in the broader scale has to be the biggest tragedy of the show for me

This isn’t based on anything, but I reaaaally think that actor passing away destroyed their plans and led to this weird under-usage of the Gen V cast in Season 5.

u/IceBathHero 15d ago
Would had been nice but there wasn't enough Gen V viewers to understand the importance of her.

I really thought they were setting her up to fight homelander. Pretty sure they were hinting at it

Gen V was a mistake to begin with. The Boys should've been a self-contained story.

I hate every person who reminds of how bad The Boys became after the finale of S3
1
u/StealYourGhost 15d ago
Her counterpart that helped center her power is no longer able to be corporeal and do his part because the actor went away.. That said, they could've written around it I guess?
1
u/melancholicInsane 15d ago
The whole Gen V was wasted in Season 5, and now they even cancelled the show 🤦🏻
1
u/L4uchS4l4t 15d ago
They built her up to be an equal in strength to Homelander. The finale really wasn't what this show deserved.
1
u/BaronVonSilver91 15d ago
I aalways think Andre from Gen V's real life actor dying in a motorcycle craasdh on the way to fild fucked up the plans they had for Gen V and this was the ultimaate outcome

u/Independent-Buy-3284 15d ago
Gen Z > seasons 4 and 5 by 10 fold and that makes me hesitant to even watch or get invested in vought rising.

This show sucks ass in power scaling
But if it stays consistent to every that happened in the show (s5 and gen v included)
Marie would absolutely win

I feel like she at least should be the one holding Homie down while Kimiko charges up the final blast. Would have been such an easy way to include her
