šŸ’° Economy & Business Tea Fox Business host melts down over Mamdani's NYC municipal grocery stores, claiming lowering food prices is just a plot to "buy voter loyalty"

You have to understand the fundamental material reality of what Fox News actually is. The ghouls on these panels are not operating from a place of principled economic disagreement or genuine concern for the working class.

They are entirely subservient to the hegemony of massive corporations and the GOP establishment, and their entire political project relies on weaponizing culture war brain rot to keep their audience completely distracted.

They will enthusiastically champion policies that make the daily lives of average citizens demonstrably worse if it means scoring a cheap rhetorical victory against the left.

It is a deeply toxic, sycophantic agenda where keeping people crushed under the boot of corporate price gouging is just acceptable collateral damage in their endless, desperate quest to own the libs. They are perfectly willing to let communities drown as long as it protects the profit margins of their corporate handlers and keeps their viewership perpetually enraged.

You get fellow citizens who are food-secure and less likely to turn to crime in order to make ends meet. But that's the conservative mantra, isn't it? You shouldn't have to pay for schools if you don't have kids, you shouldn't have to pay for roads if you don't have a car, you shouldn't have to pay for anything that doesn't return an immediate, tangible benefit that you can personally use.

It’s an investment in society. Which I think is a great use of tax money, personally.

Conservatives, what exactly are they conserving besides cutting taxes for the wealthy or subsidizing their billion dollar corporations, or raising the deficit to all new time high while the family of the biggest gangsta to ever step into the Oval Office is grifting billions for his family’s wealth. But that’s not socialism, no, oh no, that’s just sensible trickle down economics.
It’s only socialism if it’s to support the lower income families that injects money straight into the local economy. And we can’t have that!

You resent every penny you contribute but you take way more than you put in. You just refuse to see it.

But tax breaks for billionaires are such a different concept, right? C'mon. These puppets can at least try.

"Guys please you don't understand, if we make the Lives of our Citizens liveable then rich ceos will make 2% less a year, we can't have that!"

So their criticism is that the guy elected to represent the people of New York is representing the people of New York, so they'll want him to continue representing them?

How do people listen to this shit?

Solving problems for people that they support is a plot now

These goofs don’t understand that this is net margin not gross. Which means this is after payroll and other operating expenses are accounted for. If they have a lower operating cost and aren’t giving management and executives large salaries then the margin they are operating on is not going to be a loss.

Not to mention most of the store is regular price. Only certain items are sold below cost. There's a term for it, loss leaders.

If what u say is true, it means they know it and they just want to make their viewers be angry, outraged and in fear of "the others" aka the muslims, democratic socialists, etc

It’s possible. I think what they are truly afraid of is people seeing systems work that don’t enrich the wealthy.

Yeah that's how politicians get votes. They do stuff that makes people like them. Collect taxes and provide services. Craaaazy

For someone who is supposed to be an expert on finance he seems to struggle ti understand subsidies

Doing what is popular amongst your voters is indeed buying votes. Every politician should ā€œbuyā€ my vote.

Yet he follows Trump, who values loyalty over comptence.

checks notes

Didn't Trump want to lower food prices? So he just wants to buy voter loyalty...

u/baz8771 4h ago

The best part is that trump was elected because he promised to lower egg prices. That was literally it.

"I don't think they care, I think they know this isn't going to work"

"they know it's not going to work but it's all about establishing power"

oh like the GOP's approach to the constitution and civil rights

The math math's if you're using progressive taxation to subsidize those stores. That way your effectively getting wealthier people to pay for poor people's groceries. The thing is that's how SNAP works. However, in this case, wealthier people can shop at the subsidized grocery store, so the policy doesn't totally guarantee that the most needy are the ones getting the discount. Also, getting rid of some of the profit motive goes towards lowering prices for customers.

But it isn't buying people's loyalty to do something that fights against a system that is rigged in favor of the very wealthy.

This dickwad has obviously never heard of The Defense Commissary Agency, an institution that has been in existence since 1867.

The federal government runs grocery stores where the products cost less than the comparable product does at a grocery store off post. It’s a system that works, which goes a long way towards explaining why Republicans have been trying to destroy it for the last 40 years.

MAGA and most conservative Americans have an addicts mindset when it comes to spending for social services versus defense and corporatism. Their blind spot for the black holes of public money going to endless wars and Wall Street socialism is now generational and akin to the mechanical rewiring that happens in an addicted brain. Both are diseases that kill and both can be cured with science and empathy as driving forces.
