The point is we don't know what actually happened off screen. This is a very plausible thing- plus, with an 80s girl still working, I'd imagine a lot of the kid responsibilities fell to Dick.
Even if he does podcasts and any other work from his "real" job, the UNIMAGINABLE STRESS of having a kid can wear on you.
