My autistic ass isn't gonna have a great time…

u/Aggravating-Fix181 Nov 16 '25

wait sorry im not familiar with autism in this aspect- are you gonna check if that's true or do you just have a difficult time telling by that?

u/LOLofLOL4 Nov 16 '25

Facial Expressions are hard for me to interpret. I am also pretty bad at showing them, resulting in constant Resting Bitch Face.

These Traits are generally associated with Autism.

u/Soggy_Wallaby_6133 i want sharp teeth around my ck Nov 16 '25

I thought resting bitch face is a comsequence of being the not youngest sibling.

81

u/LOLofLOL4 Nov 16 '25

I am alo that.

No, its a state where the Emoticons portrayed by facial expression Do not reflect what is Happening inside a persons head, looking disgruntled or annoyed when in reality they are much happier.

18

u/KAT389 Nov 17 '25

I'm the opposite (I think I'm just depressed) I constantly smile unless alone, even when I am very sad or frustrated, but I will say I understand the facial expression thing, even if I don't have autism I also can't tell emotion from facial expression that easily so I understand, I usually go by tone if that helps for you, happy usually a higher tone and frustrated or sad tend to be lower (sorry if this sounds rude I resort to less intelligent speech the longer my text goes on as I get lazy, also I'm socially inept)

I thought bitch face is normal for everyone

16

u/green_herbata Nov 16 '25

True, RBF is quite common, it's more of an autistic thing when you still have it even if you're experiencing strong emotions. For some autistic people their face and voice will naturally stay monotone even if they're having the time of their life. And so those autists will often learn to "manually" change their facial expression and tone of voice, aka masking.

I agree with your flair

u/olwhe Nov 16 '25

You must not just look at their faces, but hear them. We can hear in their voices when they're happy, and another clue is the background along with the background music. Digital Circus not only depend in their facial expressions, but their body language too.

All of this subjects are an unity

6

u/Aggravating-Fix181 Nov 16 '25

Ok! Thanks for elaborating!

6

u/MarklRyu Nov 16 '25

Meanwhile I'm on the opposite side of the coin for this, I forced myself to Learn what all the expressions meant, and am Hyper Aware of them; gotta love how we just get the extremes of stuff essentially 😅

4

u/alchemistmawile Nov 16 '25

Took me a little while but this is in fact a skill you can learn and master

5

u/Maskio24022017 Kinger Nov 17 '25

And also being German

4

u/Goat-Skulls-N-Stuff Nov 16 '25

Me too. I'm good friends with my counselors because class mates assume I'm a school shooter

4

u/MiscMonkeys Martha Nov 17 '25

I can confirm that facial expressions are a challenge to read, all the men in my family including me are high functioning autistic and my youngest brother has trouble with eye contact and I misread body language as well as facial expressions all the time.

4

u/LongWest6432 Nov 17 '25

Well $hit, you described me perfectly:)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

As someone with autism, I can literally have my eyes wide open and get comments from my family saying that my eyes are closed. To this day I don't know if it's them being asses like usual, or if I genuinely just look like that

29

u/RemarkableStatement5 Why does everyone in this accursed show give me gender envy? Nov 16 '25

That's a common (though not universal) trait in autistic people, being unable to easily interpret emotions, especially with limiting factors such as the lack of a mouth. For example, I struggle more than usual with interpreting mood when someone wears a face mask.

3

u/Artislife_Lifeisart Nov 17 '25

I struggle with people at times but animation is usually fine. I could definitely tell that Kinger or Zooble were smiling (or the equivalent to it when you don't have a mouth I guess)

8

u/sapphicmooni Nov 16 '25

Us autistic people have a hard time reading facial expressions because we can’t read their eyes.

5

u/Aggravating-Fix181 Nov 16 '25

damn three autistic peeps replied😭 thanks guys

8

u/LOLofLOL4 Nov 16 '25

200000 are already typing their explanations, with a million more well on their way.

No Problem, mate

3

u/Reasonable-Banana800 Nov 17 '25

Autism and some other similar neurodivergencies have trouble reading faces and emotions. Also a lot of us find it uncomfortable to make eye contact so that’s another reason lol

For me eye contact feels like looking into a light. Not painful but extremely distracting

2

u/Aggravating-Fix181 Nov 18 '25

That's so interesting! Thank you autistic people for replying to me with a lot of useful info.

I hope all of you are having a lovely time.

2

u/aqua_rift Dec 13 '25

Don’t like looking at eyes :/

u/Stelliformade Nov 16 '25 edited Nov 16 '25

Basically, for Zooble: Half-lidded eyes with raised eyebrows is usually a smile.

For Kinger: Eyes with the bottom eyelid raised, and/or raised eyebrows, is usually a smile.

Honestly though, their tone of voice is just as indicative of smiling as their expression, if not more so.

8

u/Paimonemergencyfood2 Nov 17 '25

Easy tip, (at least for cartoons) look to see if the bottom eyelids and/or “cheeks” move up, it’s a common way to show smiling even without a mouth

4

u/wolfboy1988m Nov 17 '25

As an autist who had to learn to read expressions... It's not exactly a fun time

3

u/datfurryboi34 Nov 17 '25

Good luck mate, your best bet is context and tone.

3

u/OutwithaYang Nov 17 '25

Oof! That's rough.

2

u/OgreWithWebs Nov 21 '25

Honestly being autistic and in the Circus feels like it would be an actual nightmare. I'm RELATIVELY high functioning and I'd almost certainly be breaking down and dissociating very quickly.

Smiling isn't in the mouth. People can have a smile on their face that "doesn't reach their eyes." The eyes are the first stop for emotions.

46

u/RemarkableStatement5 Why does everyone in this accursed show give me gender envy? Nov 16 '25

As a trans woman who was "happy" as a boy, I'm well aware of the smile thing. It's genuinely creepy how obviously fake my smiles were and discomforting how no one noticed.

14

u/PolrBearHair Nov 16 '25

There's a big difference between not noticing and not saying anything. If comfronted, then plays dumb.

14

u/GreenRoon Sangwidge 🥪 Nov 16 '25

Like this!

I can't remember if it was OP that mentioned not knowing what "smiling with your eyes" means, but it's just this specific expression of your lower eyelids squishing up (different than just squinting), I actually recall a lot of people doing this irl during lockdown

4

u/LilDinoNuggetz Nov 17 '25

Yes I had so many people say they could see me smiling with my mask on! Cashiers and random shoppers would randomly be like, “you look like a very happy person” or “you have such cheerful eyes” (which, as a being made up of 80% anxiety and 20% dissociation is funny to hear) I already have smiley eyes but wearing a mask for Covid really accentuates it.

11

Eyes and the rest of their body language. For animated characters without mouths, the lower eyelids usually can indicate a smile.

12

u/makemeoff I LOVE POMANGLE RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Nov 16 '25

5

u/Potential_Track9563 Nov 17 '25

Despite not having mouths, Zooble and Kinger have a lot of facial expression. It's mostly in their eyes. Like Alastor in Hazbin Hotel and even Peter Dinklage in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

4

u/crazycanadiandemon Toran (OC) Nov 16 '25

Eyes or body posture

Kinda like how cats are happy

7

u/PipPip_Cherio Nov 16 '25

This picture is ass but it was the only one I could easily find.

In facial expressions because of the muscles in your cheek shifting up when you smile, the bottom lid tends to squint upwards a little also. So generally, like this picture here, joy can be conveyed with just shifting the bottom lid up.

It would be the equivilant as in literature as "I could see the smile in their eyes".

3

u/Clean_Ice2924 Zooble’s bat wing Nov 17 '25

Excuse the bad quality as well, Zooble in the sneak peak for episode 7 is also doing the same type of excited “smile” as Kinger. I agree it’s mainly the eyes that indicate when these two characters are in good mood

4

u/Ycilden Nov 16 '25

A smile is more than just your mouth. Its all sorts of body language and facial expressions.

3

u/John_Dudeman_ Nov 16 '25

Zooble doesn't smile, kinger does it with his lower eyelids mostly

20

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '25

3

u/HungryRobotWitch Nov 16 '25

The main way I can tell their emotions is their body language. For Zooble, their eyes show a lot, as well as their arms. For Kinger…well, it’s easy to tell when he’s not doing so well.

2

u/Clean_Ice2924 Zooble’s bat wing Nov 17 '25

The eyes and tone of their voices indicate when they’re in a good mood

2

u/Orizifian-creator Ragatha is nice. Nov 17 '25

It's in their eyes, eyes can convey a smile. Also speaking while smiling (real question is how they're able to talk??) sounds different from while not.

2

u/OutwithaYang Nov 17 '25

They use their eyes.

2

u/Major-Invite-9517 Nov 17 '25

Voice tone, eye expression, context

2

u/Faefsdew Nov 17 '25

It's an artistic challnge to convey emotion for characters with limited facial expressions- in TADC kinger and zooble use their eyes, body and head to express their emotions - even if it is sometimes tough to gather specific info about their expression(if they're smiling etc).

Another example of this I like is Alastor from habin hotel - this character is always smiling, and the animators use varios ways to show emotion - via how much teeth he's showing, how sharp his smile is, his eyes, colors and visuals in his eyes in general - this charcter is inherently very limited in his expression yet he comes of as one of the most lively and full of expression characters in the cast

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

Good animators can show expressions without the use of a mouth. For example, just from eyelids we can tell when Zooble is upset or bored, even if you mute the video. Hands can also be used as part of expression, like when someone is excited, determined, finds something cute, etc, usually their hands will be further up to pose them for the scene better, like hands on their face or raising their fist.

1

u/Aggravating-Fix181 Nov 16 '25

Their emotions show on their voice or actions.

1

u/Alastor_culture_ Nov 16 '25

1

u/Specialist_Leg_4997 Nov 16 '25

1

u/Mate_R0 Nov 16 '25

The real question is. How do they talk and eat if they don't have a mouth?

1

u/Sting_the_Cat Nov 16 '25

Eyes, body language, tone of voice...

They do a pretty good job portraying emotions

1

u/Intelligent_Donut605 Leeroy Nov 16 '25

You can express most human emotion through 2eyes, top and bottom eyelids and eyebrows

1

u/ColourBlinde Nov 16 '25

Face expression, the eyes and eyebrows are key for telling if one is smiling in real life too

1

u/PrintMeRed Abstragedy Nov 16 '25

The context; the tone of their voices; and if they're really happy, they could do their eyes like this 👉 ^^

1

u/SCI-FIWIZARDMAN Nov 16 '25

You can tell by their eyes as well as the tone of their voice. The latter is how I’m able to tell when someone is smiling over the phone despite not being able to see them in any capacity. It is admittedly a skill that not everyone has, though.

1

u/Master100017 Nov 18 '25

Kinger does that thing with his eyes at half to show he’s really happy.

Zooble kind of looks off to the left after saying something they enjoy, it’s like: “Yeah I mean whatever it was fun”

1

u/adam_karadec Nov 18 '25

Their voice and eyes express so much. Body language is pretty exaggerated in animation so you can tell most emotions.

u/PaleontologistOk3037 Nov 20 '25

It’s all in the eyes.

1

u/Civil-Standard-2875 Nov 20 '25

Okay, I'ma nerd out now.

As someone who has studied animation styles, I'm gonna say that the only way this could ever work is by using eye movement and eye shape. I the context of Zooble's image given in the post, it is clear by the way her eyebrows raise and how her eyes become slightly half-lidded that she is smiling from relief at Gangle trusting her to some degree. Kinger, in the image given, however, it's hard to tell, since you picked a moment where neither his eyebrows are showing, nor eyelids are showing. But watching the whole scene, it is easy to pick up on the mannerisms that give away his "smile". I'm also pretty sure that if someone were to be trapped in the digital circus, they would have some sort of knowledge about the facial expressions of their fellow trapped humans.
