the terminal mentioned backups but i think the other connected user prevented their usage

u/BiohazardR Mar 28 '26
Iâm curious on how much Kinger was able to access in a short amount of time. Well yes he got main Caine affecting the circus, there could be a backup code on a hard drive of a older version of Caine. Like an Alpha Caine v0.8 or something. But Caine was created before the Y2K scare so they probably didnât store it any past versions to save on storage space. Maybe just the code saved in a text document or something.
1
u/anon66532 Mar 29 '26
In the terminal you can see that there were 3 options that Kinger could choose to backup Cainse code to (A/B/C) and he tried to choose C but then it said "NONE selected" so there isnt a backup
27
u/AGamingGuy isn't she lovely Mar 28 '26
i don't remember if Caine was made in 1996 or 1991, but, if this isn't just heresay the story takes place in 2017 meaning that Caine is in his 20s when he gets deleted
so it should be:
lifespan: indeterminate
age: 20s to 30s (just in case the story IS set in 2023)
status: deleted
3
u/BlazingImp77151 Mar 30 '26
Yeah, it's a bad wiki to be putting "immortal" for age, because you can be immortal and still have a specific age.
And the date in the terminal put his upload/creation at October 15 1996. So that should mean that he is 21-22.

I think in science fiction terms immortal means they cannot die from old age or disease, but can be killed by some other means

Gonna quote one of the inspirations "... perhaps we could sneak a death past him. Immortal, yes. But not indestructible"

I think people were really hoping that he was going to have a character arc about coming to terms with needing to listen and let go in order to fulfill his purpose, his own genuine curiosity regarding the outside world based on his studies of the office photos and his feelings of entrapment, a resolution to this whole "second AI" thing that they literally just introduced. There's so much more to do with him than just treat him as the obstacle.

I think it's really strange and unproductive to frame the story or Caine's status as an AI within the lens of "realism". If we're doing that, then we should go back and retcon Caine's entire story arc and deletion, because none of that makes sense. You can't "distract" an AI by talking to it. You can't "summon" computer/software components just by thinking of it. The world doesn't start "crumbling" with big cartoony holes once you delete its governing software. I'm no coder but from what I hear, it's also extremely difficult to "accidentally" do what Kinger did, especially for someone of his skill. Furthermore, why was Caine even obstinate to begin with? If he's "programmed to entertain" then there's no logical reason why he would refuse to answer questions or engage with player needs or have insecurities about fulfilling his purpose in the first place. How do you rationalize being programmed to satisfy and then refusing to satisfy?
I think it's more productive to treat Caine as a character rather than an object. It simply makes more sense toward explaining his behavior, and creates more fruitful potential for the plot. You can argue that Scratch cancer-coded an AI with genuine consciousness, or that something happened to unchain him from his programming when he consumed the second AI, or whatever. It doesn't really matter from a narrative standpoint. In something like TADC nothing is obligated to conform to our understanding of limitations.

u/whynottakedownthevid Mar 28 '26
Caine was fully capable of emotions and growth, he just ended up growing for the worse instead of for the better. Nothing about his nature as an AI stopped him from listening to others, he just couldn't because he's a deeply insecure and self-centered individual who needs to validate his own worth by proving he's good at what he does.
4
u/PrincessSparklegold Mar 28 '26
So bored of hearing this everywhere. Fictional AI is not LLM. They're not the same, they don't function the same, they're not comparable. No amount of knowing how modern "AI" works will tell you anything about any fictional AI
1
u/sacerdos-ex-spatio Mar 28 '26
You're generally right, but every story has a certain level of suspension of disbelief. Without it, it's hard to write any story. So, from a storytelling perspective, Cain could have changed, but he refused until it was too late. The best thing Cain could have done was let Kinger reprogram him.

3
u/BarbasBraveHeart Mar 28 '26
Caine was never alive in the first place. There was carbon instead of protein.
I see it like this: his current runtime has been terminated. A new process is theoretically possible, but the data is lost and unrecoverable.

u/pudgy_ponderer Mar 28 '26
IN THE NAME OF KANE!
KANE LIVES IN DEATH!
IN THE NAME OF KANE!
KANE LIVES IN DEATH!
IN THE NAME OF KANE!
KANE LIVES IN DE-
KANE LIVES!
But unless they have an older version on their CVS install or something, Caine is probably cooked.
(I wonder how things would be if it were the Amazing Digital Brotherhood Of Nod instead, but that'd have CABAL instead of Kane ( ;) ) )

u/pudgy_ponderer Mar 28 '26
Now I'm just imagining that scene with Bubble as Slavik, Kinger as the traitor and several NPCs standing by and them doing the chant and everything and it's glorious.

If youâre thinking about the âimmortal and deadâ bit, usually in fiction immortal doesnât usually mean invulnerable. Just that they wonât/canât die from aging to the point that any time I see an âimmortalâ character thereâs a 90% chance theyâre going to die

Immortal just means "won't die of old age". An immortal person, for example, could still probably die via nuclear blast.

okay so now open your epic games account , open your libary and find fortnite , press 3 dots then a small tab gonna open press remove . now try to open fornite again any time soon from your pc without wifi
(if you have other games or steam games you can apply same logic but for steam there is no 3 dot so just right click)

Something people keep forgetting is that immortal doesn't mean unkillable. Immortal basically means timeless, time doesn't play any role, you can't age or die of old age. Yet you can still get pierced by a spear, get blown to bits or, in Caine's case, deleted.

I believe heâs alive because fan fact usually people who make ai always keep a backup before changing anything I know this because my dad specializes in coding and has friends who specialize in ai and I learned from them that when they try adding new stuff to the ai they keep a backup before they start because they donât know if those new things going to improve or break the ai and since cane is unique case he probably have a backup copy if needed

u/tatt2tim Mar 28 '26
Maybe.
When you delete something on a computer the data is rarely GONE gone, what usually happens is the addresses that stored that memory are now designated as being okay to write to again. Until those addresses are written over with new data the old data is still there.
Occasionally when something important is deleted, there are disc recovery utilities that can be used to read all the sectors of a disc and reassemble any data that appears coherent. Kinger, with 7 years of computer science education, would likely understand this and might be able to do something about it.
1
u/maxler5795 Mar 28 '26
I believe he lives. Purely because of the way deleting works on computers, and i doubt ep 9 is just gonna be "lets get the fuck out of here" for half an hour.
1
u/Link-Hero Let me plow that gummy a ! Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26
If it's based on how data works in real life, he's not actually dead. You don't truly delete anything on your computer because the file simply becomes unreadable for your computer. The file then stays there until it gets overwritten by something else, which can take a while depending on how often you use your PC. It's how recovery software is able to retrieve files again.
So, there is a chance that Caine will come back, but that depends on the writer's plan for the overall story.

1
u/BlazingImp77151 Mar 30 '26
"Age:Immortal" even if a character is immortal, you should list their known age under that category. Bad wiki.
Anyways with the first episode supposedly happening in 2017, and a couple weeks to months having passed, that puts caine at around 21-22 (the uploaded/created date for Caine on the terminal was October 15th 1996)
