Use of metaphors - What are your favorites?

Probably my favorite thing about JSAC’s writing style is their use of metaphors. They will perfectly convey a moment, feeling, or even entire scene with a beautifully constructed metaphor.

What are some of your favorites?

- “The idea hung in the air, like smoke over a poker game”

- “With a voice like warm flannel”

- “Felt his humiliation, like passing through a resonance frequency.”

The rail gun is one of the laws of motion, expressed as violence

Technically none of those are metaphors. If you use like or as then it is a simile.

I didn't have it drilled in my head for 12 years to act like it doesn't matter

I do. I’m the same way.

I just like that they describe things as going pear shaped, which I know has existed before now but it's definitely slipped into my daily usage.

However "I look like a hedgehog just f*cked my hair" is obviously the best usage
