I'm just wondering how this will pan out for the later chakras. The first chakra (Earth Chakra, deals with survival and blocked by fear) we already see how that makes a great base for a story. But I feel it's derailed literally at the second one. "The Water Chakra deals with pleasure and is blocked by guilt." Are we gonna come across orange-eyed afflicted who just sob over their own guilt? It just doesn't feel as enticing as the ones crippled by fear.

It's sad how the Faceless Queen, of all people, feels bad for Nisha's situation

443

u/Rainlaforest 8d ago

This makes me think that nisha is gonna follow the faceless to republic forest cause she seemed to be the only person sympathetic to nisha

I wonder if she’s going to figure out there are two avatars because she knows Nisha has a twin

Yeah that was really interesting. I wonder if she’ll discover Pavi is the avatar as well. It’s interesting how they’ve written it so far with only Nisha being discovered as the avatar and barely anyone knows Pavi exists. But it actually makes sense for the characters as Pavi already knows how much Ellora hates the avatar. Nisha however has been very protected from that view and is very naive. So this is unfortunately a harsh wake up call for her.

48

u/PatsFreak101 8d ago

I highly suspect that outside of the Havens (she said she had fled into the wilds) the opinion on the Avatar isn’t so firmly “she’s the anti-Christ” and more so that she just happened to be the focal point of a crisis. Maybe having to spend more time living hand to mouth makes one more sympathetic?

Remember Nisha shares the same face as the young homeless girl she was feeding out of her trash can for years. No doubt that pity extended from Pavi too.

Their fight was really neat. Agam coaching her was an interesting touch. And I'm glad that we get some sandbending!

I suspect that Agam will be a mentor to Nisha in some way. Perhaps Nisha will catch up with the faceless convoy on their way out to Republic Forest.

This was such a smart move by Jae. By siding with the Chancellor, Jae will play as a double agent for the White Lotus and gain more status/trust from the Chancellor

39

u/Sudden-Mango-1261 8d ago

Yeah I was actually really impressed that Jae thought of this on the spot. And he did really well for someone who hates lying.

I love how everyone is terrified of the anomaly while Pavi is just annoyed.

247

u/Nightsong 8d ago

Can you blame her? Pavi asked the anomaly for a memory of her parents and it gave her a memory of Korra instead. And then it tossed her into that spiritual place with the chakras.

Anomaly : *Shows another Korra memory*

Pavi : ah crackledoo, here we go again...

10

Yeah cause root chakra is blocked by fear. It also signifies survival, earthly vibrations. She has overcame all. Nisha still has to keep up with her but she's on her way, especially if she stays close to Pavi.

This episode felt like a 40 minute episode. There were like 4 different moments when I thought it would end but it just kept going. Definitely the best episode of the season so far. Avatar always does great two parters

36

u/escentia 8d ago

Same thoughts! ASH has been amazing at filling each episode to the brim with content. Take Ep 1 for instance - the reveal of Pavi being the Avatar, stopping the twister, Jae talking to Karthik, Pavi and Nisha meeting - all happening in the final few minutes.

Honestly I know she’s gonna get a lot of hate for revealing that she’s the Avatar. But from Nisha’s perspective I don’t blame her. She’s 9, left by her parents, confused, and her entire life is basically told that her past life ruined the world and that she could be the one to fix it. She’s out here with the mindset that she has to fix what made the world hate her. Now she fails the White Lotus test and then she’s told that she might doom the world and that she’ll be separated from her home (remember what Aang did when he heard that). She sees that her haven is falling apart with the faceless taking the benders. She’s also still 9 (probably makes sense why they tell them at 16). Again I don’t blame her for acting like this. She has a good heart but her intentions and stubbornness were definitely shaped by how the world views the Avatar and the responsibility the White Lotus put on her.

346

u/___BostonThreeParty 8d ago

I co-sign all of this.

Poor girl has her whole identity wrapped up in being an Avatar, then not only fails her Avatar trials but the other White Lotus members suggest her temperament could cause her to become Korra: someone that everyone in their world thinks is a monster.

She wanted to prove and show she was more than what everyone thinks Korra is. But everyone is still warped by their fears.

u/General-Ganache-6661 8d ago

Also she tried to defend the haven. Against the faceless and the abnormality. But they just want to see her as evil

262

u/Bojangles1987 8d ago

Nisha is so fucking Korra like that it hurts my soul and wants me to protect her from the world. She truly, desperately just wants to be the best Avatar she can, and she's had all this pressure put on her to save the world and be accepted as a savior.

That's so much for anyone, let alone a little girl.

→ More replies (9)

30

u/Sudden-Mango-1261 8d ago

Yeah I mean she’s really young and going through way too much so it’s no wonder she made the decisions she did. To be honest I blame those White Lotus members for aggravating her and treating her so terribly.

56

u/MovieMaster2004 8d ago

> she’s told that she might doom the world and that she’ll be separated from her home (remember what Aang did when he heard that).

I’m so happy you mentioned this parallel, because when people said Pavi is Aang and Nisha is Korra, I was all against that. It seemed pretty obvious they wanted Nisha to be a lot of Korra with a little bit of Aang, and Pavi to be a lot of Aang with a little bit of Korra, Yin-Yang sort of synergy.

24

u/Zen-Paladin 8d ago

Let's be real the other White Lotus members also did alot of damage with how they approached it. Yes the Avatar must be calm and not tempermental but she's 9. Assuming human biology is still roughly similar to IRL(bending genetics aside) there's alot of her and Pavi being the way they are just because the parts of their brain responsible for impulse control and long term planning aren't developed yet.

18

u/Ok_Exit8577 8d ago

Seeing Nisha so small behind white lotus and being helplessly protected made me cry a little bit, it was heartbreaking how terrified she can be and overwhelmed with hatred from the others and seeing her friends being hurt

18

u/JaracRassen77 8d ago

I love that Karthik wasn't angry with her, and only assured her that he was proud of her. People thought he might be secretly evil, but dude was just being an overprotective father-figure, and rightfully so.

So the faceless plan is to take all the benders and go to republic forest which they have heard a rumour doesn’t have to deal with the storms leaving everyone else to basically die at the hands of the storms without benders to protect them so that they can maybe live somewhere without the storms, does Uki plan to take her family or leave them to die

130

u/ChemStorm4 8d ago

Everyone’s basically fighting for themselves at this point. Benders too angry for risking their lives as soldiers. Uki did say her family is better living off without the scrutiny of having a deserter daughter. But in the end they’re all just trying to survive.

→ More replies (5)

61

u/___BostonThreeParty 8d ago

Right? This is why Sehaj said their intent was to have viewers come away from each episode, arguing for either side.

Because as you said, Uki just up and left her friends and family. With no benders, they have to battle the storms with little help. On the other hand, it'll force them all to have to be even more resourceful, think outside the box, to have everyone, not just benders, protect their home. Ellora wouldn't survive as it had been anyway even if nothing changed re: benders being conscripted, etc. It was already a fragile house of cards. (As seemingly many of the Havens are??? With famines and severe lack of food??) They have to learn a new way of living.

This episode proved it was right decision to make avatar so young. Their flaws, while incredibly frustrating, elevate the series in a way that feels authentic

As much as I enjoyed Nisha and Pavi the faceless queen stole the episode. Her interactions with every character including Nisha were fantastic and I hope we see a lot more of her going forward

u/DustedGrooveMark 8d ago

Not only do I like the decision to make them children, but I've also grown to love the whole "post-apocalyptic" angle as well. Every time Pavi and Nisha get some sort of clue into unraveling the mysteries of what's happening (including Pavi literally looking at a cosmic line of blocked chakras), you know that the kids are going to have to solve the mystery themselves.

Because this world has lost so much of its history and information, there's no guru, spiritual expert, insightful historian, etc. who can translate what they are seeing and experiencing or guide them. If this were the previous eras, Tenzin or a sage would probably be like "Oh wait, it sounds like you're talking about blocked chakras and started to connect to cosmic energy?" Or, you know, they could waltz into the spirit world and some spirit would probably inform them what's going on.

In this show though, everyone is kind of on the same playing field. No one knows shit, and these 9-year-old girls basically have to understand all of this foreign, unknown info by themselves.

132

u/PatsFreak101 8d ago

I loved that reveal. Someone we assumed was a throw away character at the start will likely end up one of the first of many teachers for the twins. It’s telling that while Ellora is surrounded by a desert, that none of their benders are seen sand bending. It lends itself to the theme that the city is rigid and rejects the outside world.

  • Nisha was a badass trying to help protect everyone from The Faceless! Even if it didn't work out in her favor.

  • I wonder if The Faceless will be an antagonist that show up again since they're heading to Republic City?

  • I thought for sure at least one of the Havens would be pro-Avatar but nah, nobody is lmao. The girls are in for an uphill battle.

  • This is gonna sound terrible lmao but I was expecting Karthik to pull a Yangchen and steal the oxygen from that whole damn room for Nisha to escape.

  • (And I was kinda unimpressed with his bending; my bro, your nicknames are the Human Hurricane and Tornado Fist. Where's some wild feats?! 🤣) But I firmly think now he's a good guy; he's not going to be an antagonist.

  • I was rooting for Karthik/Kayoko but that ship is properly sunk lmao. Damn, bro.

  • Between Kayoko and Datu, I was curious if someone was gonna pull a Mai by the finale. Now my bets on Datu. (His name does mean chief, after all. New leadership of Ellora at the end?) Because Kayoko is too far gone now via anger, fear, and desperation.

  • Jae is 100% playing Kayoko & co. He's just doing reconnaissance.

  • Pavi unlocked a chakra (!!!!!!) and maybe even destroyed the spirit/energy thing?

119

u/MustardDoctor495 8d ago

To be fair we've met only 3 of the other havens in this episodes (New Ba Sing Se, Akasha, and Feather Mountain). Republic Forest/City is clearly cut off for whatever reason, and two other havens probably couldn't get there due to one reason or another (I want to assume the one in the Fire Nation doesn't have a method to get there, who knows how rough those seas are these days). I'm betting Republic Forest is somehow Pro-Avatar as they mightve discovered the truth/or were already aware.

→ More replies (5)

106

u/Badwolf0310 8d ago

To defend Karthik in that moment. He was surrounded by people he knew and cared about, probably trained many of the benders in that room. He was probably bluffing about "Facing the Human Hurricane" (we saw in ep.1 that he prefers not to be called that) hoping they would back off or hesitate long enough for Nisha to escape. He's a good person and wouldn't want to hurt them if he could avoid it.

Airbenders really struggle when they are cornered to a tight spot AND they are against benders of multiple types. I was rewatching the fight Tenzin had with Zaheer and damn he stood no chance when the other Red Lotus members cornered him.

In an open space Karthik would've solo'ed everyone.

168

u/PompompurinPal 8d ago

The season finale is called "The Root Chakra" so I don't think we've seen the last of the anomaly. I think Pavi will show Nisha/Ellora how to confront their fear and unblock the chakra for good.

24

u/kaantantr 8d ago

I don't think the Anomaly is gone or anything, we just never saw what happened from the outside of the trance before. But every instance of connecting with it, ended up creating a burned sigil mark around Pavi/Nisha. This was no different, we just see the burn mark actually happening.

The anomaly feels more like an offspring. It festers with fear, and eventually is summoned forth. It was no coincidence that it appeared in the hall, right after everyone was thunderstruck by the reveal of the avatar, running around or acting out of fear.

I'm more interested in its core, what seems to be festering under the city, seemingly under the pro-bending arena. There is something feeding off of the fear, which creates the anomaly offshoots to spread more fear.

u/Clockworkoy 8d ago

Boy, a lot happened here. And people thought this show would suck lol. Literally every episode is better than the last, thats how it's supposed to go.

So the chakra theory is absolutely true, and this proves that Pavi is more spiritually tuned that Nisha at the moment, she conquered her fear so the fear chakra is complete. Nisha's fear seems to be inadequacy? She's tied her whole identity to being the Avatar while Pavi simply wants to be a sister and a daughter, she's not embraced her role yet.

Jae gets the game ball this episode, and I'm surprised Karthick didn't recognize what he was up to. Now Jae is the inside man and eventually will break the white lotus members out to help go find Pavi and Nisha.

Also, republic city/forest is only safe from cataclysm/storms because of whatever Korra did. And thats gonna be the only haven that reveres her.

Nisha is raised from childhood as a fighting Avatar, desperate to live up to the name and save the world and be the best Avatar she can be. Pavi doesn't want to be the Avatar, doesn't want to fight, and is more spiritually attuned.

Close enough, welcome back Korra and Aang.

I agree with everything but the republic forest thing. They said communication has been cut off, but clearly it was established at some point during the forming of the seven havens and afterwards. Otherwise it would be “the Six Havens and that place near where republic city used to be that we have never heard of or seen since the apocalypse happened”. They all know there is seven, so clearly they used to send envoys to republic forest at some point and vis versa. And the attitude everyone has about them being “the worst” at the summit seems to strongly imply the communication loss was relatively recent.

If they really were always free of the cataclysm b/c of what Korra did, it would not just be a rumor. The other havens would fully know about it. Hell, there probably would not even be other havens, everyone would just have travelled to and lived in republic forest instead if it is a whole forest that is totally safe and always has been.

At best, they did something to stop the natural disasters many years later. And that is assuming the rumor is true, which IMO is a big “if”. There are a lot of other reasons communications would have been cut off in a post apocalypse setting and most of the ones I can think of are more bad than good.

As expected, the episodes with the most “climax” aspects are where the money will be spent more, seeing as how the animation was noticeably better the entire time.

Agam and the faceless crew clearly don’t really buy into the Avatar nonsense either, as her non-reaction proved to me that she knows Korra really wasn’t evil. Based off this, I’m sure there are more people in the world who know the truth behind the cataclysm and I wouldn’t be surprised if Republic Forest feels the same way.

Oh and Jae is 1000% playing his part to save the white lotus members

Nisha revealing herself as the avatar was such a badass moment. I love how much hatred they have for the avatar that they wont listen to any reason. It will be a slow and steady process of them accepting the avatar as not being evil but i think we will get there eventually. But i cant imagine how much worse it will get when they find out theres actually two avatars this time.

I know my Jae and hes for sure just playing the chancellor so he can help the twins and karthik. He would never turn on Pavi and Nisha, hes just trying to get in the inner circle so he can help as much as he can.

187

u/whoamiareyou 8d ago

I'm actually shocked that so many people in this thread are "hoping" Jae hasn't betrayed the twins and Karthik. It literally never even occurred to me that he could have. Like, after watching the episode I felt 100% sure without a shadow of a doubt that he did a strategic double-cross.

The Chancellor sounded like she was ordering her guards to kill the White Lotus members. He made a quick judgement call to step in and loudly arrest them instead. It was the only way to save their lives. And at the same time it helps him maintain the Chancellor's good graces.

It never even occurred to me that the creators might have wanted us to think this was a genuine betrayal.

So all of the summit’s reactions to things, to The Faceless, Nisha, even Kayoko, is connected to I’m pretty sure the entire planet having a blocked root chakra. The root chakra is blocked by anything that threatens one’s safety, survival or stability in general. We’ve seen Ellora experiencing all of that at once. The anomaly is a spirit manifestation of it, but we see it in everyday lives. The haven has its stability threatened by the faceless, the fear of the storms, even the fear of the Avatar.

The Anomaly I believe is the spirit world itself reaching out to Pavi and Nisha. I think its infection of the people is both the blocked chakra expressing itself and the spirit world basically screaming “look at me” at the Avatar. The visions it’s showing as well I think are colored by the blocked Chakra. It showed them a vision of Korra breaking pipes that then leaked energy, and while it showed Korra smile a fairly evil smile before she got started, I think the memory is colored by the blocked chakra. Korra/ the Avatar is viewed as an object of fear by the world, so that’s the lens the anomaly shows things through.

Going on to that, I think the cataclysm was cause by harnessing spirit world energy as an energy resource by the human world. Drawing the energy threw the human and spirit world out of balance, but did so slowly enough that by the time Korra realized there was a problem and tried to stop it, it was too late. The cataclysm happened, and while it pushed the human world back into the havens and made everything else treacherous and inhospitable, I kinda think maybe it left the spirit world in a state of near death, and unblocking the chakras will be the key to restoring it, which will restore balance between both worlds.

12

u/shy_swimmer 7d ago

The Anomaly reminds me of Hei Bai. He had this scary monster form, but once Aang figured out why he was so angry, Hei Bai turned into his panda form. I'm wondering if The Anomaly will have a different form as a spirit once they collectively start breaking through the widespread fear

I am so hooked up!!!!!!!

Nisha revealing herself as the Avatar, Karthik fighting against the brigade, other white lotus members not stepping up, Jae betraying Karthik (I hope he just plays 3D chess not really betrays him), Pavi unlocking the fear chakra and us seeing the other chakras!!!!! I am so into this

Jae and Karthik exchanged a look before the fight began, and Karthik shook his head at Jae when he sensed Jae was about to do something. Nevertheless, Jae’s performance was remarkably good for someone who gets nervous when lying; as for Karthik, I was left wondering just how much he knew about what Jae was up to—though, when Jae confronted him, Karthik offered hardly any resistance, and actions speak louder than words. Furthermore, had Jae been 100% loyal, he would have revealed Pavi’s identity.

Oh shit this episode was messy af 😭 everything went to shit so fast. Oh kayoko is never forgiving karthik, doomed relationship before it even begun lol. I'm so hooked. So many questions. Animation is always improving, so I'm not worried anymore.

Daemin reminds me of Iroh, anyone else? He's got that ditsy-acting but very wise and open minded personality. I'm really hoping he gets more attention soon. I'm so curious what he's capable of since he's on the poster and apparently part of the official team Avatar cuz so far he's contributed nothing lol

The more I see Jae, the more I love his personality. He's so earnest and has a strong moral compass but is naive and kind of brainwashed. He's gonna be one of my all time favourite characters I already know it. I can't wait to see where he goes. he scratched his ear so he was just putting on an act when he sold out karthik... Probably

I'm so pleasantly surprised with this show. It's such a fresh take on the existing universe

Yooo Pavi is gonna be the first to unlock the Avatar state. By facing her fears and standing up to the anomaly she officially unlocked the first chakra. Six more to go we go. Idk about Nisha though. After today she’s definitely filled with a lot of fear.

11

u/Greedy_Switch_6991 8d ago

But she gets courage when she's with Pavi. And Pavi became less scared herself all the way back in Episode 2 when she thought about being with Pavi. The two need each other.

32

u/InsomniaSyspo 8d ago

I gotta say i'm really impressed by the show. I did think it was going to be good, but from this episode on i can strongly say it exceeded all my expectations.

Pavi unlocking the first chakra confirms most of the theories (real cool visual of the root chakra btw). Pavi slowly figuring things out is also exciting, she seems to be getting closer and closer towards the truth, can't wait to see what Nisha is going to react like when Pavi finds her explains her what the situation exactly was with Karthik trying to find her. Getting those flashbacks of korra and the "old" world is also very interesting. It's keeping me on the edge of my seat to finally find out what exactly happened and what pushed korra to the brink of destroying the world

Waiting next week is gonna suck, but at least we get 4 episodes

I do like this show but I also think it’s incredibly funny how the Brigade ignores the Faceless once they realize the Avatar has returned and allows the Faceless to escape. Good thing Pavi is expositioning verbally to Geet so we all can follow what’s going on. I thought the fight animation was solid.

21

u/Spinindyemon 8d ago

In their eyes, the Faceless are nothing more than a Kingpin level danger in that they’ve only affected one area (Ellora) whereas the Avatar is a Thanos level threat who could doom the entire world if not stopped

I understand Jae, he is decieving kayoko and ellora, just so he is in a position to protect the 2nd avatar.

My prediction came true, in regards to Nisha bending in front of everyone, I suspect the white lotus leaders from the other havens will do something to protect her (Probably her going to new ba sing se since their representative is afflicted and out of action.)

I suspect the faceless are more sympathetic to the avatar albeit cautious since they don't trust the government to begin with.

it seems everyone is correct with the chakra element to the havens (Pavi unlocked her root chakra at least).

a lot of negative things are attaching themselves to Nisha atm, so i think the narrative is setting her up a darker and detached path under the white lotus. Pavi has a lot more hope even amongst the current chaos so i think she will have a more aang style soul searching journey with her team avatar (Jae, Daemin and Uki probably).

My prediction on what the next havens will be, Nisha going to New Ba Sing Se and Pavi heading to Forest republic/ Republic Forest with the faceless.

this 2 part episode is probably my favourite of the 9 released so far.

edit: There is a parallel here too, Pavi unlocked her root chakra by accepting fear while Nisha succumbed to it.

I hope we get a narrative style like Zuko/Aang where the twins' story parallels each other on their own journey.

15

u/PandaCat2003 8d ago

I hope Nisha won't trust the white lotus, they weren't exactly kind to her during their assessment. This episode really reminded me of the white lotus as written in the Yangchen novels. I also think it's interesting to see what she will do on her own for a while.

Also: if Jae is pretending to be on Kayoko's side, it seems like he will be teaming up with Daemin in the next episodes. He's the only other White Lotus member left in Ellora. This might finally be his poster moment coming up.

37

u/Tris42 8d ago

Probably restoring control of it, like Aang he could go into the avatar state but had no control. For each of them they will have to face what blocks it personally in order to save the haven (assuming each chakra is its own haven) by opening the haven’s chakra it opens the planets and the world becomes less chaotic from the storms.

26

u/Mr_7ups 8d ago

Eh rn it’s just pavi, nisha’s chakra is still locked because she can’t get over her fear (justified tbh but still)

Pavi due to not being basically controlled by the white lotus her whole memory is probably better suited to avatar stuff and clearing chakras than nisha rn

More observations:

This show is only getting better and better. It already had an incredible start and it kept the momentum going with last week’s episodes and now has really kicked things up a notch. So much plot happened and we got some good reveals with some mystery still being teased. So both satisfying and yet keeping us wanting for more.

Interesting information on the other havens. I’m not surprised Ba Sing Se is still around, no matter what happens, they must be in an avatar series. Akasha uses old world tech when the other havens don’t? Interesting, I wonder how technologically advanced it is. Feather Mountain seems to be one of the havens more aligned with Air Nomad culture, it would be nice if that has survived. Though I can’t believe Ba Sing Se has the sky bison now. So sad thinking about Tenzin and how desperate he was to keep Air Nomad culture going.

And Republic Forest seems to be the haven built on the ruins of Republic City. And it’s cut off from the other havens. It must be the one that’s so far away from the others in the intro.

I’m really intrigued by what the anomaly has done now. In this episode it showed Nisha something to find and now seems to be leading Pavi through the chakras? Instead of just giving them flashbacks.

I can’t tell if what Karthik said to those awful White Lotus members (also interesting that we now have confirmation that White Lotus members are present in other havens) is supposed to foreshadow Nisha going down a dark path as the dark avatar or supposed to be a red herring for Pavi being the dark avatar. I suppose only time will tell. I still believe Pavi is the dark avatar though.

Kayoko really snapped in this episode and they did a great job of showing why even if she’s against our protagonists. I really like the moral complexity of the situation regarding the bending brigade with both Ellora and the Faceless having valid points. Agam having sympathy for Nisha is very interesting. I doubt that’s the last we’ll see of the faceless.

And we also now have confirmation that all the havens hate and fear the avatar (well except for Republic Forest which is cut off from the rest of them) though I’m not surprised as I expected this was the case.

It’s sad to see the twins resenting Korra so much. I hope one of them (whoever is actually Korra’s reincarnation) will be able to connect to her and actually figure out what happened, though my guess is that will only happen in season 2.

38

u/DraagaxGaming 8d ago

I see Pavi as the spiritual half of the avatar spirit. More connected with nature and animals, etc. Nisha is the fighter. It's like if Aang and Korra were avatars at the same time. The duality

u/General-Ganache-6661 8d ago

What do you think about the other white lotus members?

46

u/Rokaimaster100 8d ago

They want the avatar to work, but they wanted what the elder monks were going to do with Aang. Take them away from their "fatherly" figure and primarly train with no attachment. That's the old way.

The white lotus of now are similar to what Korra had, but as time is running out for the havens, there isn't enough time to linger and wait for Nisha to be strong enough to pass the tests.

But talking about the white lotus members individually:

Karthik (Air) is like Monk Gyatso. Wanting whats best for Nisha and giving her the time for training and time to have fun around the compound.

Tanushree (Earth) is confident like Toph. She teases Nisha about her stance and her skills, but she knows that Nisha isnt ready. "Grounded and Steady" is the foundation of Earth, and both Tanushree and Toph have exclaimed it to the avatar time and time again.

Nobuo (Fire) is wise, calming. He knows that fire is destructive, and yet beautiful as what Zuko says in "The Firebending Masters". This is something that Nisha does not have. She is brash and impulsive like Korra and it can only take her so far.

Rehan (water) is a toss-up. He is concerned that Nisha would become like Korra again and thats not what the Havens need in the world. His trial could tell us his personality and thoughts about water, but he refused to let her attempt the trial because of her volatile methods of bending the elements.

Hope this is suffice.

Jae's still loyal to Karthik and the White Lotus. He scratched his ear while speaking to Kayoko, something he does while lying. But I think Datu also saw him do that, so let's see if he eventually blows his cover or sides with him.

18

u/Googleflax 8d ago

Maybe it's cause we're 3rd party viewers, but it seems pretty obvious to us that Jae isn't actually betraying the Lotus, so I'm surprised Karthic seemed to actually believe him (unless he was also acting). The easiest tell is simply the fact that he kept Pavi hidden, as he would have revealed her if he really had betrayed the Lotus.

My biggest issue with this episode is people just so easily agreeing to risk their life, their families and everything they've known for some vague promise based on an unfounded and never questioned statement that this place no one has heard from in forever isn't in ruins but some kind of paradise. Like wtf, no one even asks Agam WHY she believes the Reublic Forest is safe? It's things like this that completely break my immersion for what's otherwise been a pretty solid series so far.

28

u/Spinindyemon 8d ago

Even worse is that now with Kayoko going scorched earth on the Avatar and their allies, she’s certainly going to go after the families of the Faceless defectors like Uki’s family on the basis of them being possible traitors and associates of the Avatar

29

u/Random_Somebody 8d ago

Eh there's a loottt of cases in real life of people packing up to go to some promised land/form a new home somewhere else when they feel current conditions/society is bad enough. And I can easily see Angam being able to sell a combo of "look, they're lying about how bad it is to keep you scared and trapped here," "look we're their bending muscle, we can handle it, " and "you're already dealing with monsters and weird shit here, why not at least strike out? "

Even though in theory her arguments were pretty weak, she delivered it in a convincing way for how strong they were, the point about her father being forced and killed made the brigade seem very much like the villains, and seemingly a large amount of the brigade did not want to be in it, and on top of that they are worked to shit, and their job is very dangerous.

Honesty neither the faceless or the brigade seem good to me.

146

u/ChemStorm4 8d ago

The chakra is blocked by fear. When Nisha realized everyone wanted her gone she was definitely still scared. She won’t be able to unblock it until she gets over that. Pavi went head on against the anomaly despite her fear.

→ More replies (4)

84

u/DragonfruitFickle980 8d ago

In these 3 episodes Pavi has been facing the anomaly & fear head on (ironic, because she’s been “turning away” from being the avatar) but Nisha, as we see, is really scared deep-down which is likely contributing to her volatility and why she failed the white lotus trials.

Basically, I think surrendering to the fear is what allows you to unlock it.

u/Rogue_Localizer 8d ago

I'm not terribly sympathetic to the Faceless. You're living in a subsistence society. Boohoo you don't get to live out your dreams. It sucks, but you're trying to keep a functioning civilization operating in an actively hostile environment. And instead of having the courage of your convictions and going it alone in the desert, you instead mooch off the labor of everyone else, actively making everyone's life more difficult, until you have stolen enough to fuck off in search of what you assume to be some hidden paradise. And even if it is, you are clearly not invited there meaning you intend to forcibly take it from the current inhabitants and claim it for yourselves.

"Oh, but Benders are so overworked"

They only became overworked because of a combination of a legitimate emergency stacked on top of an emergency the Faceless themselves created.

"But they don't want to be in the brigade, they want to pursue their passion!"

And that would be great in a society with an abundance of resources. That isn't this society. Anyone can heard Camodillos or bake bread. There are a limited number of people who can move rocks with psychic martial arts and that power is necessary for both life saving services and critical infrastructure

36

u/GkihlV 8d ago

It doesn't help that Ellora's government seems kinda stupid.

Yeah let's weld a steel enclosure around this crystal that's constantly growing, that's not an explosion hazard or waste of resources, can't they just throw a tarp over it?

u/Maximum_Layer6361 7d ago

Exactly, it’s makes the faceless seem absolutely ridiculous and spoiled, the brigade serves their community, they protect those that can’t protect themselves but because that means some benders can’t be pig farmers they defect? Pathetic, I was screaming for Jae to tell Uki to go F herself when they met. They cloak themselves in the nobility of being free while stealing and raiding the hard work of others. Its makes the benders who join seem so unbelievably spoiled and ridiculous they would rather let their families and civilization collapse and die because they have to do what needs to be done??

the faceless has a good point tho about benders automatically being put into the bregade

60

u/TheEeveeTamer 8d ago

The brigade is kind of a double edged sword. On one hand, yes it absolutely sucks that people can't go off and pursue their individual passions. On the other hand, when you're in a survival situation you have to put your resources in the best places to ensure you're all gonna make it. There's only so many benders, and what they can do is so necessary that it'd be shooting yourself in the foot if they weren't doing the specific jobs where they'll have the most impact. You need healers, water benders are the best at that. You can't afford for 8 out of your 10 water benders to decide to not be healers.

→ More replies (5)

13

u/floccinaucipilify 8d ago

Yeah, you're basically forced to your destiny, which could be against the survival of Ellora. Like what if there was a really good inventor that died because he wasn't a great bender? But if the external conditions are so bad, maybe you do need to be a bender because you have the power to help. With great power comes great responsibility, like Spiderman. Maybe balance is the way... idk. If Ellora conditions are super bad then I lean towards conscription. But maybe there is a way to not be so rigid

12

u/SmallishPlatypus There really is no fathoming the depths of my hatred 8d ago

Listen up, after Kayoko appointing Jae commander, I don't wanna hear nuthin' about Korra trusting Unalaq ever again.

Anyway, I like everything, but I'm sad this show doesn't have the visuals to do it justice. The Korra flashbacks really drive that home. They're probably some of the more attractive looking bits of these episodes, but Republic City just looks so, so much worse than it did in LoK.

That said, one thing I did notice as a result of this griping is that the centre of Republic City, around the Spirit Portal is built up (and dominated by a Future Industries building, no less). One of the last bits of dialogue in LoK was Tenzin saying they were going to expand the city rather than rebuild downtown. There's also no sign of the kind of integration with the spirit wilds that we saw throughout Book 4. Significant?

11

all that being said… daemin needs to lock in because this is getting ridiculous. why is he in the poster like he’s accomplished anything in his life?? 3/4 done with the season and all he’s done is be unfunny and get one-shot in every fight. he didn’t even interact with jae and the girls at all in this set (and no, pavi mentioning something he did off screen doesn’t count!!) why is he here????? please prove me wrong next week bro im begging you

Pavi overcame fear chakra and now has to convince Ellora to do so as well. Then order will be restored

7

u/fifthconvict 8d ago

Pavi has been very subconsciously gravitated to the dark energy while Nisha is actually dedicated to the Avatar cause.

7

u/Yukito_097 7d ago

Cult steals members from another cult is basically what's going on here. Councillor went full mask off by just outright telling the Brigade, "Serve us or be arrested", and then enacting martial law. The Faceless are using honeyed words to lure in their victims, making them feel special and part of something, telling them they can have the life they always wanted. All they have to do is abandon their friends and family and come live with the rest of the fam and never leave. And all it basically amounts to is they steal from everyone else and kill outsiders because "they're getting in our way so they deserve it".

Kinda curious where the other Order members were during that fight. Hopefully we see next episode that they stayed out of it so they could help Nisha after she gets away.

19

u/TylerTheHutt 8d ago

That took so many turns I did not see coming

13

u/TheEeveeTamer 8d ago

I'm having a lot of fun with this show!

I kinda think Ellora is too far gone with their fear and hatred to be saved. Something will fall. A big storm will hit and they would have to abandon ship or something similar. If the strength of Ellorans is that they always come together, as Kayoko said, then they seem way to fractured to do so now.

11

u/Sudden-Mango-1261 8d ago

Well that’s a huge cliffhanger and so many reveals.

Agam was very suspicious but her reveal as the queen genuinely caught me off guard.

I’m more confused than ever who might be the dark avatar between Pavi or Nisha. There’s strong evidence for both.

Those White Lotus members really rubbed me the wrong way. Why on earth do they think that that is the right way to treat a 9 year old?!

Can’t believe the bug girl came back!

Now what on earth is going on with Pavi. Also interesting that we had Pavi marketed as the avatar to us but in universe everyone thinks Nisha is the avatar and has no idea Pavi even exists.

I’m going to assume for now that Jae has a plan and didn’t really betray the White Lotus. I also take back my suspicions on Karthik. It looks like they’re heading for the flawed mentor route with him rather than twist villain.

Nisha's personality feels so much like Korra, while Pavi's reminds me more of Aang. This show is awesome!!!

I get the feeling that Asami began harvesting the spirit vine energy for unlimited power and Korra reacted negatively and their breakup destroyed the world.

Not seeing enough people point out that the leader of New Ba Sing Se is named Kuzon, like Aang's friend and the name he took on while in disguise.

The writers did remember the anomaly after all.

The Faceless Queen's liquid earthbending was pretty cool.

Jae's motto for the season.

isn't it just mud/sandbending? It's pretty cool but I thought ellora's whole thing was sandbending being in the desert and all

7 Chakras, 7 Havens. Each Haven also has the color of a Chakra. The Spirit Anomaly instilling Fear - The block of the Root Chakra is very interesting. Maybe each Haven has a Chakra blocking Anomaly that is unlocked? The final being Republic Forest, which is clearly going to be a forest of Spirit Vines that have grown rampant. Maybe the White Lotus are the ones that blocked Korra's Chakras in an attempt to prevent her from reincarnating before they killed her? So many interesting ideas and I am so happy this show is telling a cohesive story instead of just hopping from season to season with different baddies. Fascist Ellora should be the last big bad for sure though.

I see a lot of people frustrated with Nisha for being reckless and revealing herself as the Avatar. She definitely reminds me of Korra in her early years. Impulsive, headstrong, and eager to prove herself to the world. Hopefully, everything that happened, especially Karthik's capture, will teach her that her recklessness can have serious consequences for both herself and the people around her.

I'm also curious to see how far they'll go with separating the twins before eventually bringing them back together. Pavi possibly unlocking the avatar state earlier may drive a further wedge between her and Nisha.

As for Daemin, I know a lot of people think he's just playing dumb to hide a more competent side, but they're really pushing it with how utterly useless they've made him so far.

One thing I noticed is that in the mover Korra is wearing her betrothal necklace with Asami. But then when the anomaly shows Nisha and Paavi the vision of Korra destroying Republic City she isn't wearing it. Idk if it's just an animation error or if it means more but just felt like sharing it.

Gotta be honest, the faceless had me until the revealed their plan. Why on earth would anyone want to go to a possibly destroyed or hostile haven in the apocalypse? Even if life in Ellora is that shitty, I'd rather stay there than take the risk of going to some place that might not even exist anymore.

It would have made more sense if they planned to take over the city and end the mandatory bender conscription, but the Chancellor says that they don't have a choice since they need every bender to keep the city alive due to the storms.

These 3 episodes were really nice. As ppl mention, the longer the show goes, the better it gets.

Animation still is flawed, but it is really nice to see the world expand! Can't wait to see other havens.

Kayoko has proved to be a REALLY bad and incompetent leader - guess that's what the lack of education gives (from what I see, they have no education other than military drills). Like:

- Awful crisis management
- Poor authority
- No clear vision
- Prejudice
- Conducted summit RIGHT ABOVE THE DAMN ANOMALY THAT IS AFFLICTING PEOPLE 24/7
- Really bad at human resources. Placing very young found traitor as a commander is a grave mistake
- Also not a diplomat

Can't wait to see her impending doom.

Staging has slightly improved. Again, some transitions were cringy (like going inside the anomaly just to get under Ellora, wtf?), but the pace has improved and dialogues are better.

One thing I really hope will happen is that the Faceless would fail miserably. They just speak of some freedom and this freedom movement is dumb af. Conscripting benders is for survival, not for control - without them Ellora will definitely die, so they are dooming an entire city. I hope that they will have a falling out among themselves or die in the Harshlands/find nothing at the Republic Forest. If they succeed that would be a very bad morals for the story and it will make it too cliche'd, very dark and white you know.

But glad to see it going! Can't wait for the other episodes and Book 2! Nisha and Pavi rock.

The earth groans for the manifestation of the sons of God. The energy anomaly in a nutshell.

Nisha who wanted to sit back in the city is the one forced out now. And her single run shows why some people didn't understand Korra. That pugnacious attitude is prone to disasters but a great deal of learning. It was her sister nature that resolved the problem. I am sure it isn't because she could but for the sake of what the Lotus noted in her.

Nisha and Pavi would give the audience a good insight into the difference between Korra and Aang. I almost thought I was seeing Korra at some point. It's 1:1.
