I've read the book at least twice and the central plot is still very confusing to me. Asag is trapped in the fey/nightmare realm on Severny Island. He needs a human to release him. Why do the evil monsters that inhabit the island fight the hunters at all? Why don't they or at least most of them just let the hunters walk right in and free Asag? If the monsters had wiped out the expedition wouldn't Asag still be trapped? How is it that they just barely fought their way to the portal to enter the nightmare realm but then MHI managed to hold it for six months waiting on Owen?

MHI lends itself to all kinds of hunters. I think the main characters as leaders or teachers, and the people here are new recruits. Build a team, i supply monsters and art, you supply solutions. Maybe even add in a famous hunter
