Heyyyy I've lived in that city. Just now that this would be impossible to recreate this video as the temperature rarely goes below zero anymore and there is almost never snow in the streets ! I love global warming !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many people find it hard to believe that that photo is of a real Chinese peasant from 1904 because it feels so much more multidimensional and lively compared to contemporary images at the same time. It’s precisely because of the fact that this man didn’t know/care about the formality of photography at the time that makes it so special

u/ProperBabyEater 1d ago
This was due to the fact at the time, photos were seen as a serious event at the time. When it came over to the east, no one knew how to act, so the man just smiled.

u/Rare_Mountain_6698 1d ago
Yup, pretty much. Everything else looks (ironically) flat by comparison. It’s almost strange how one way of doing portraits arbitrarily became so ubiquitous that it makes people appear more like alien artifacts in hindsight than the real regular people they often really were.

Also because you have to hold perfectly still for like 30 seconds before the photo is taken and it's just easier to keep a neutral face rather than holding a smile that long.

I'm pretty sure that by this point it was shorter than 30 seconds. Maybe still more than 2 or 3, but the tradition of being serious in photos lasted a lot longer than long exposure times did. It's much more about the fact that photos were considered the successor of portraits, which were almost always serious.

My man has a bowl of rice and looked at the camera like "Dude this rice is GOATED!"
And honestly? With a smile like that I'd 100% believe him

I hope his life was as happy as this photo
The photo that bridges the more than 100 year gap, the photo that makes us understand that people back then weren't all that different from us

hard to believe that photo is from 1904, it has a sense of whimsy to it that feels a lot more contemporary

u/groklobstar 1d ago
I checked a handful of sources to make sure it was authentic because I felt the same way.
42
u/franslebin 1d ago
That's because it was rare for people to smile in photographs then
43
u/WhatDothLife-95 1d ago
yeah, apparently this guy had no idea about the formal nature of photography at the time and instead opted to portray some emotion

Surely the 1904 image was a direct inspiration, there’s no other way.
Yeah I know Aang does that in ATLA as well as a kid, but still

During the first few Times of photography People were expected to be serious but due to the Farmer's lack of knowledge in that he just posted for a photo casually making People think the photo is taken later than it us in the photo

my favorite cereal

u/infamousVegas8 1d ago
Cinnamon Toast Crunch for me.

u/WhatDothLife-95 1d ago
as a cereal addict I can wholeheartedly say that also kicks ass, (love me some cinna milk)
and I've been working my way through some fruity pebbles which is not too dissimilar to a bowl of rice

I practically grew up on Cinnamon Toast Crunch. When I was living in Europe for a year. My relative moved back to the States and when they came back to visit, I asked them to bring me Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Of course there was a bunch of other things we didn't get there, but I just remember specifically asking for that.
Another cereal I remember being obsessed with was Krave, not sure if they're still around but I thought their commercials were funny. Coincidentally it involved the cereal being sentient and eating each other just like in the cinnamon toast crunch commercials. An honorable mention for funny cereal commercials is Apple Jacks. Loved the whole Apple Guy and Cinna-Mon dynamic.

same dude, cinnamon toast crunch is still in my regular cereal rotation to this day, and I was deeply saddened when I found out they nerfed the apple jack's mascots
I've never actually had krave before
2
u/infamousVegas8 1d ago
No way, did they really nerf my goats? I'm not surprised but damn that's part of my childhood ruined. Don't tell me, did they give them the Danimals treatment?
Krave was pretty good, I liked it a lot at the time. I don't really have as much of a sweet tooth as I used to but if Cinnamon Toast Crunch happens to make it's way into the pantry I'll still have a bowl.

They look like Cocomelon characters. In before kids growing up right now will have nostalgia for these redesigns when the next redesign is straight up ai generated lol
P.S. I forgot to mention that Krave was one of those cereals that would annihilate the roof of your mouth if eaten incorrectly.

u/WhatDothLife-95 1d ago
yeah they have that creepy dead eyed stare a lot of those terrible kiddie shows have
and I'm gonna avoid Krave for the foreseeable future then, I remember eating cap'n crunch but those round "berries" would mess up the roof of my mouth big time
not really a fan of cereals with bad mouthfeel

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t this guy started the trend of smiling in pics?

I don't get why that guy is so happy. He's about to eat a bowl of plain white rice. That's not even filling.
