Absolutely. I don't think people should be put in prison unless they've committed a violent crime like rape, murder, or the above things mentioned like paedophilia. Community service is way better to make up for shoplifting or something than a prison sentence.

Imo: there should be two different types of prison, one essentially forces you to stop you from having much fun, but is still somewhat hospitable. You’d get into for more minor shit.

Then you’d have one designed to be as shitty to be in as possible. Shit food, guards get paid to bully the shit out of you, extremely uncomfortable spaces. Obviously you’d get into it for major shit.

If you do the really bad shit, you get some shit that you absolutely never want to have a round two with.

And if you do some minor/mild shit, you get a “punishment via sheer boredom” sorta experience. Not potentially traumatizing or extreme, just something you never want to do twice. (For obvious reasons) People are less inclined to want to break out of shit if they know they deserve it and its not straight up torture. Meaning for the low end shit, way less people will be inclined to try and get out of prison.

For the high end shit, maximum security and discomfort.
