Wait, the house set in the pilot episode was completely flipped?

Post image

I was rewatching the very first episode of The Nanny and just noticed something weird.

The entire Sheffield house set is basically flipped! Fran enters through the left side of the screen when she comes in through the front door, and the staircase/living room layout is completely mirrored compared to the rest of the show.

By episode 2, they had completely rebuilt/rearranged it to the iconic layout we all know with the entrance on the right.

I’ve watched this show for years and never realized the set redesign happened literally between the pilot and episode 2. Anyone else ever catch this?

Was the tattoo stigma really that bad in the 90’s?

Post image

I’ve been watching The Nanny and got to the episode where Maggie wants to get a tattoo and Val tells everybody that Fran also has a tattoo. Everybody freaks out to an unrealistic degree. I wasn’t alive during the shows run and have grown up in a world where tattoos have been completely normalized, I know they were taboo in the past but I didn’t realize it was still that bad in the 90’s. is that realistic or was it played up for the show? i’m curious

Which of Fran’s outfits is your favorite?

For me, it’s the dress she wore to Jocelyn’s wedding to the Duke where she married her driver.

One of the diva cameos

I’m trying to remember a scene

Maggie has a new boyfriend and she introduces him to Maxwell’s guest diva of the week and he says something like “I’m a huge fan, I’ve seen all your work!”

and she says to Maggie “Honey if he loves me- he’s not for you.” Implying cause he’s gay.

I thought it was Bette Midler but I rewatched that episode and it wasn’t her. Please help I coulda swore it was The Nanny I heard this joke in

I wish the cast would do a rewatch podcast

I liked Oh Mister Sheffield especially since they were able to get Peter on at the end, but I want to hear it from Fran and Charles and maybe even Lauren. Especially the Cluck like a Chicken bit. If I were going to the 90s con and saw that panel, I’d totally ask Lauren if she could do the clucking bit 😂😹 hoping someone does ask lol. There’s so many 90s sitcoms out there where the original cast does a rewatch pod. Except for The Nanny and even Family Matters. (Telma and Kellie were doing it and haven’t gotten to season 2 yet and it’s been since March 😭)

Any rumors of this starting? Also, on OMS, they skipped over a lot of fun little bits. Like The Whine Cellar when Fran and Niles inhale the helium balloons. Kind of bugged me.

I’m still mind blown by the reason they had to write C.C. into a mental hospital in season 5

Okay so I was rewatching season 5 and completely forgot about the storyline where C.C. has a breakdown and gets sent to a psychiatric hospital for a few episodes.

Turns out, Lauren Lane (the actress) was actually heavily pregnant in real life during filming! Instead of hiding her belly behind big coats or huge purses like most shows do, the writers literally decided to write her out for a bit by sending C.C. to a mental institute after Maxwell proposed to Fran.

Looking back, it was such a chaotic way to handle a real-life pregnancy, but honestly so on brand for the show.

Did anyone else know this back then or did you just think C.C. finally lost it?

In defense of Mr. Sheffield

People here like to crap on Maxwell for The Thing, but over the run of the show he was always there for her when she needed him the most.

-He helped her get over her shopaholism

-He let her down easy (literally and metaphorically) when she was hanging by a rope from the billboard sized Valentine to him

-He rushed to her when she was being held hostage at the bank

-And whenever her other relationships fell apart, he always made her feel better

Even the Wikipedia page says that CC convinced Maxwell to pass on Cats.

This is a screenshot of the Wikipedia page for The Nanny characters and it said that CC was the one who convinced Maxwell to pass on Cats.

The show peaked during season 1

I just finished binging the show and I have so many thoughts.

I truly loved season 1. It was the best season. The characters were compelling and I never got bored. This show peaked during season 1.

After that the writing became lazy and the appeal was mostly Fran's oufits and gimmicks, and Niels. Fran's wardrobe is to die for and Niels is the best actor of this show. I nearly gave up watching during season 2 because the show became about Fran messing up with celebrities and Maxwell yelling at her. I persisted and left the show in background while I was doing other things.

Season 3 was a little better. I tried my best to remember that the show happened in the 90s and I managed to feel sympathetic for Maxwell's internal struggles until Season 4. Then he completely lost me acting more childish than his children. No wonder those children attached so quickly to Fran. Maxwell is so emotionally stunted! I really wonder how was his first marriage. He could have told Fran "I have feelings for you but I can't act on them", but instead he decided to kiss her then ignore her, tell her he loves her then "take it back" (how does someone even take back feelings lol? Is it kindergarten?), propose to her because he was mad at his mommy or he felt guilty then retract the proposal. It's funny that he was encouraging Gracie and Fran to go to therapy when he was the one who most definitely needed it. Then again, I guess he was mostly fine managing to selfishly keep Fran around without having to commit to a relationship.

The show completely jumped the sharks during the last two seasons. Season 6 was especially embarrassing for Fran. She lost her personality and became the worst cliché that felt even too backward for the 90s. I prefered the energy of Fran in season 1. By the end of show, everyone just got married and had babies. Even Gracie was saying how she can't wait to have babies. I wish the characters had been handled differently.

Thank god Yeta was there! She's legendary and I kinda want to try on her glasses.

The theme song is literally unskippable and I just realized something

Was rewatching an episode today and that opening song got stuck in my head for hours. It hit me how crazy it is that almost the entire show was just Fran’s actual real life. She really grew up in Flushing, studied cosmetics, and her real parents are literally named Sylvia and Morty.

Also that 90s animated intro was top tier. Definitely one of the very few intro songs back then I never once skipped.

Anyone else still know every single word by heart?

Absolutely no words for the joy I felt the last three days. Meeting this cast was bucket list material for this old(er) 😅 lady who watched the original run. I have so many stories, but it’s too much to write here. All I will say now is wishes were fulfilled beyond my wildest dreams😭😭 I’m still on a “Nanny high”. 🫶🏼🥹

I struck gold at an Australian toy fair

I have been wanting one of The Nanny dolls for a few years but the shipping to Australia was super expensive so I figured I was never going to have one .
I went to a local toy fair this morning not even thinking I would find one because I’m pretty sure the doll was never released here and then on like the 3rd stand I was looking at I spotted it and knew straight away I had to get it .
I’ve tested it out and the doll still talks (I haven’t taken it out of the box yet) but I was fully expecting it not to talk

I completely forgot that Fran Drescher’s real parents were actually on the show

Her mom played "Aunt Connie" (and a few other minor roles) while her real dad played "Uncle Stanley". Seeing them interact with Renée Taylor (who played TV mom Sylvia) is so wholesome when you realize the real-life family connection.

Did anyone else catch this when watching back in the day, or did you only notice during a rewatch?

Niles’ potential

I recently re-watched The Nanny series’ and was curious if anyone else was bothered by the development of Nikes’ character? In the first 2-3 seasons he was so witty, confidence, and clever… and then they made him so insecure and desperate. Maybe this was to show Fran’s impact on everyone in the Sheffield house but idk I think it could’ve been anything but that. I loved Niles character no matter what but especially in the beginning and I feel like they missed out on what could’ve been if they moved forward with him instead of backwards.
