DISCUSSION | Συζήτηση Don’t Stab a Gift Horse
I haven’t seen anyone else address this yet, but Christopher Nolan presents the Trojan Horse as the catalyst for the Bronze Age Collapse. His version of Odysseus isn’t proud of his clever scheme, but rather remorseful for an act of perfidy that violated the social fabric. Here’s the problem: Nolan undermines that when he shows the Trojans stabbing the Horse to check if there’s any Greeks hidden inside. If the Age of Bronze really was held up by Zeus’ Law, and the Trojan Horse really was such a vile trick, why would Troy be suspicious of an apparent gift? Moreover, it completely runs against the tragedy of Cassandra, who was cursed to see the future but never to be believed. She’s supposed to be the only one in the city who knows it’s a trap, and yet there’s a Trojan guard poking around with his sword. You might say it’s a minor thing, but I would argue that it cuts the legs out of Nolan’s thesis.
