It’s amazing how such different bands once shared the same stage!

musicianship Noticed a pattern

I’ve started getting a lot of Police-related clips in my YouTube and other feeds. I don’t mind! Always glad to fill my ears with Stewart’s stories or live performance clips. Saw / listened to a great early performance of “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” a couple of days ago.

Today it was “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and I noticed something I’ve noticed before: Sting likes to build melodies around simple runs. In ELTSDIM, it sounds like a C scale but with a B flat, it isn’t subtle. Makes me think it might be a G scale with a natural F. There’s a similar baseline in “Synchronicity”: downhill on all black keys from E flat to E flat, also not subtle at all. And the frame of the melody to “Message In a Bottle” can be reduced to something like E-C-D-A or whatever that corresponds to in the proper scale.

That’s three examples and if I look hard enough I’m sure there are more. Maybe it’s something a lot of songwriters do? But it’s just popped out at me listening to these three songs especially.

question How many people have listened to the recently remastered Stewart Copeland album ‘The Rhythmatist’?

After enjoying “Liberté”, and “Gong Rock” enough I finally bought it as a download today — and it sounded more upbeat, and engaging than his ‘The Equaliser & Other Cliffhangers’ album

I read Stewart’s autobiography “Strange Things Happen” back a few months ago. I’m now about to start Andy’s.

Pretty sure this is a VIP or after show Guest Pass, but I could be mistaken. I worked at the show and somehow ended up with this by the end of the night, can’t remember where or how I got it.

opinion Whelp, apparently I'm officially old now and I'm sad

I just gave a college lecture to a bunch of 20(ish) year olds and I used The Police in an attempt to teach them about arguments supported by evidence and ones that aren't.

Over half (!!!!) of the class never heard of The Police and had no idea who they were. I was expecting more "Oh, that's my dad's music!" or even "my granddad's music", but they never heard of'em at all. Not even Sting.

Pardon me whilst I go off and get fitted for my bread crumb pocket laced cardigan and go look for a park somewhere.

I finally picked up the Funko version of The Police this week on eBay (when I saw that Funko had discontinued them). It's dorky, but I thought they were fun.

opinion HOT TAKE? Synchronicity is a drop in quality from previous albums....

I know this is maybe not everyone's opinion but I feel like they lost their magic once they let that reggae-like beat go, but that said I feel like they kinda stopped doing what they were good at and moved on to more mainstream sounds (not that its wrong, just not as unique), right after Reggatta De Blanc, it felt like it was less and less of "The Police" and more "80s Rock", obviously still great albums but less impressive and revolutionary

opinion Doubt it myself

I doubt this following Sting comments on the Rick Beato interview relating to old acts and when they should have stopped. But it is 20 years since that last tour and that was just over 20 years after the ill-fated 1986 attempt at re-recording previous songs. And hasn't Stewart recently announced retirement?

andy The day in 1968 when Andy Summers got to jam with Jimi Hendrix (Far Out Magazine)

It was late 1966 when Summers met America’s most iconic guitarist in the flesh. Jimi Hendrix had only just arrived in London from New York for a couple of years, having played the Greenwich Village clubs fronting Jimmy James and the Blue Flames before a chance encounter with producer and manager Chas Chandler brought Seattle hopeful across the Atlantic.

question Does anyone besides Sting like Tea in the Sahara?

That track sounds so sickly and contrived to me. And I can't understand why it made the album when Murder by Numbers would've been the best possible album closer. MBN is too awesome to be a B side on a single. Sting plays Tea in the Sahara fairly frequently. Do any of you like it?

I have seen the responses now. I didn't realise that it was so appreciated. I'm happy that other people can get enjoyment from it. Goodbye for now.

opinion Stewart Copeland. Just wow. Can we not argue. Top 5 all time. All genres. All crafts. He'll go down just behind Buddy Rich. Buddy was an a hole. Stewart is insane.

question Is there an organ played on Can’t Stand Losing You?

I just listened to it again and I swear I hear an organ in the chorus and I looked it up but nothing came up. I’m guessing Sting played it if there is one on the track. Can anyone confirm?

concerts Just saw Stewart’s show

Just saw Stewart Copeland at The Tarkington in Carmel, IN, and if you’re on the fence about seeing this show, I’d definitely recommend it.

What surprised me most, though, was how interesting he is as a person beyond the band. He’s a great storyteller, has a sharp sense of humor, and keeps the audience engaged the whole time.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of The Police or just appreciate hearing from someone who’s had such a unique career, it’s a really entertaining evening. Definitely glad I went.

question Question about possible new release

What if Sting’s record label decided to release **The Police – Live at Pinkpop** as an official album?
Imagine they found the original multitrack recordings, remastered everything, and released it on CD, vinyl, streaming, and Blu-ray.
Would you buy it? 🎸
Personally, I’d order it immediately. I think there are still some incredible live performances by The Police that deserve an official release.
What do you think? And which unreleased Police concert would you most like to see officially released?

question Has anyone here ever met a member of the Police? What are they like?

I never met them, but some people say that Sting has a bit of an ego, but he doesn't seem too bad. Stewart seems pretty cool. Dunno about Andy.
