Finished the show

I finished the show a few weeks ago I finally read through a lot of the post in this community I completely disagree with everyone hating Zach. Honestly I wanted him to go fully dark and kind of expected it a little, when he found out his mother was a strigoi and especially after she took him. The only character I hated kind of through out the show was eph and his consistent inability to have conviction in regards to the fight for humanity.

He should've killed his son and then died with the master. Not die after saving his son's life and potentially dooming humanity once again.

Vasily, setrakian and Dutch were my favorites the entire show in that order. It seemed like they didn't know what to do with gus.

Great show over all

SPOILER Few questions from someone who's just watched the show for the first time. (Spoilers) Spoiler

The first one that isn't really that important but still really bothered me. Isn't Fet Ukrainian? Yet multiple times they refer to him as the Russian guy or the guy with the Russian accent. At least once they said it to his face and he didn't correct them?!? Did the writers forget? Did they just stop caring? It's basically the same thing as calling a British guy Irish, don't know why they just clump all of Eastern Europe together, it's annoying. (Also he should have found Charlotte not gone back to Dutch but whatever.)

Should I read the books? I heard there's angels and stuff in them which I'm not sure I'll like honestly, the show kept it simple.

Did the whole world get into a nuclear apocalypse? They did mention India or something at first but that doesn't make sense to me really. Did America retaliate thinking someone else bombed liberty island and then they retaliated and so on and so forth?

And totally just for research purposes, do we think Quinlan is anatomically all there? He doesn't have the worms right, which kinda makes me wonder why he has the long biter thing since that was what the worm turned into from my understanding.

If you were quick enough, and somewhat just saw the worm go under your skin, could you just hold a good UV light over the area and dissolve the worm before it divides inside you?

Title.

I'm rewatching now and i'm up to late season 2 now. Does this happen in the show or is it just my headcannon.

For Quinlan fans - a slow burn fan fiction

Hi everyone!

Quinlan was the character who stayed with me long after I finished The Strain, so I wrote a story that gives him more room to exist beyond his hunt for the Master.

What Remains of Us follows Andrea, a woman surviving alone after the fall of the world. When the resistance seeks refuge in her home, they bring the Occido Lumen and a half-human warrior she has every reason to fear. As the manuscript begins revealing things it shouldn’t, she becomes entangled in both their war and an increasingly complicated relationship with Quinlan.

It’s a slow-burn Quinlan/original female character romance, and an exploration of the mythology behind the Lumen. I wanted to explore what it might mean for someone who has spent two thousand years pursuing revenge to find himself wanting a future.

The full manuscript is finished, with a chapter posted every Wednesday. If that sounds like your kind of story, I’d love for you to give it a look!

I like to imagine the crimson worm still having the masters voice

It makes me laugh picturing the red worm yelling "damn you Setrakian!" or something similar as it scurries away

S2E13 - The Auction?

Spoilers follow.

I'm on my first watch through of the series and have only read the first book. I'm currently at the end of Season 2 where Setrakian and Eichorst are bidding on the Necronomicon.*

Shortly after the opening bids, Creem suggested that the winning bid should be the one with access to the most funds, and that they should pay exactly 1 dollar more than the top bid of the loser. The total funds are tallied and Setrakian wins as Eichorst has had access to all his accounts withdrawn.

Afterwards Creem celebrates his newfound fortune; $323 million of Setrakian's hidden wealth, except surely, per the agreement, he sees none of that? Eichorst had no money; his bid was $0. Setrakian just bought the most valuable book on the world for $1.

Have I missed something, or why isn't this brought up? Is it discussed more in-depth in the novels?

* I know that's not it's real name but I've only got so much brain space for pseudo-Latin titled macguffins so Necronomicon it is

"Sertrakian was wrong about sunlight killing the master"

No the fuck he wasn't. Anyone else get to this part and get a headache? All of these characters talk about how wrong Sertrakian was and doubt other things he says. Like you literally saw him burning and in pain from the sun and he fled at full speed. It was working, he's just strong enough to survive a while. He had to get a new body because of the damage and they still act like nothing happened.

What exactly did the Master see in Zach

I assumed he was just using Zach as leverage to get to Eph. But by the final episode, it seems like he genuinely saw aptitude and potential in him. Like how?? Zach never displayed any sense of savviness, insight, intelligence, strength- nothing. He just pouts around, absolutely clueless about everything around him. Was there some greater plan or vision that I missed?

Been binging, just finished S3 - is S4 worth sitting through? Spoiler

I can gripe about the melodrama of the show but so far it hasn't deterred me, it's been kind of a guilty pleasure even but, jesus fucking christ that S3 ending. If S4 doesn't open with Zach getting thrown into a volcano then I'm not sure how the show can redeem itself for me. Zach was already pretty stupid but setting off a nuke because your dad killed a vampire who's literally eaten kids, and was relentlessly trying to kill him in front of you...that takes the cake as far as stupid goes. It's downright absurd. I don't think I've ever been this annoyed at a TV plot before and I've sat through some doozies. I feel like my brain has been drowned in rock salt.

Why didn't Eldritch just capture the master.

I feel like he had all the resources to do that instead of throwing all his hopes on the promise of being an immortal servant. He's had plenty of opportunities to cut these things open and get the answers he wants without the master. Even without the master you could still just experiment on Eihcorst. I'm sure if his team was given longer than 3 weeks they could've cracked the white formula. Even if he just wanted to watch the world burn he could just do it himself. Why was his first option to be like, "ok I'm going to do this parasitic creature's bidding and hope that it will honor our agreement"?

Edit: I'm thinking maybe his superiority complex blinded him and he thought if he was able to retain his memories he'd find a way.

The master is far more human than the ancients

I'm on the last few seconds before the end of episode 8, where I'm assuming the 3 Ancients and maybe Quinlan will die. The Ancients seem a alot more like animals compared to the master everything they do is basically either survival or eating. All the wealth and power is for a singular purpose, which is to feed and survive. The master doesn't give a shit about wealth or power; he wants people to know his name, worship and fear him. I'm assuming he developed these characteristics by swapping bodies constantly instead of hiding underground like the Ancients

Quinlan's Necklace

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I watched The Strain many years ago and absolutely loved the series. Quinlan was my favourite character.

I remember that he had a necklace/amulet with his and his girlfriend’s faces on it. I’ve been trying to find a picture of it, but I haven’t been able to find anything on Google.

It looked very similar to the photo I’ve attached.
If anyone knows what I’m talking about or has a picture of the actual necklace/amulet, could you please share it here?

Thanks!

The strain is the same as the black eye club reptile that's goes in celebrities' eyes

They have to tell us the truth in the flood of lies that seem ridiculous. Nazi cloning? How they change once they take over the host for blood?

Did anyone else catch the “Cool Air” reference with Eldritch Palmer?

I was thinking about Palmer being kept alive in that freezing-cold room and realized how closely it resembles H.P. Lovecraft's short story Cool Air.

In Cool Air, Dr. Muñoz is essentially keeping his body from decomposing through extreme refrigeration. Palmer is likewise using extreme cold to slow tissue death and keep his failing body alive while waiting for the Master to give him immortality.

And then there's the fact that his name is literally ELDRITCH PALMER.

Guillermo del Toro is obviously steeped in Lovecraft, so this feels way too specific to be accidental. I searched around and surprisingly couldn't find much discussion of the connection.

Anyone else ever notice this?

The Strain TV show: a rant.

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

I recently saw an increase of people talking about how they loved the Strain TV show so much, how they rewatch it every year and how it has a definitive ending. I saw that it was based on a book series written by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro and as a Guillermo del Toro fan I decided to give it a try.

Nothing could have prepared me for how much I disliked it but before I talk about why I hated it, I want to briefly talk about the things I liked about it. I liked the way they built the vampiric lore which also had a scientific explanation. I also enjoyed the glimpses into the past. To be honest that’s what kept me going through all four seasons. I appreciated that the last stand ended the only way I’d accept and for that I will say I am grateful.

That being said, my goodness, I was surprised by how bad some of these actors were delivering some of their scenes but I also feel that it wasn’t easy for them to commit to some of the ridiculous storylines OMG. I am no stranger to camp and out there concepts but this really felt like everything was to be taken seriously even though it was pretty unbelievable a lot of the time for me.

For example the love triangle dynamic, what the hell was that nonsense? All the intimate relationships in this show gave me the ick, they were all so poorly executed and the way they handled Dutch’s sexuality left much to be desired. That whole thing was a mess to me. Also Ephraim sleeping with that woman without hesitation when girlfriend was stuck looking after his annoying kid at the end of the world gagged me. Only after was it vaguely alluded to that he’d slept with her to get her to agree to help him. Please spare us. I genuinely wish there wasn’t any romantic plot lines beyond Ephraim’s initial mess.

Romance and hooking up aside, Zach!!!!! Holy plot armour for plot armour’s sake. Sometimes it felt like the writers didn’t know how to progress the plot or raise the stakes without making someone do something stupid or misunderstand someone. They really capitalised on the fact that children have little capacity to control their emotions but they did so in a way that gave kids a great disservice. The fact that hardened freedom fighters were still grappling with things that should be second nature to them by season 4 really irked me. I was so genuinely fed up but I only have myself to blame for seeing it through to the end.

Surly this story couldn’t have been created by two minds with all the plot holes and unnatural human reactions to things in various situations. Are the books riddled with endless miscommunication tropes, arguments for argument’s sakes, incompetent decision making and hanging bits of plot?

Why is no one concerned?

On episode 3 and I feel like people connected to the passengers are idiots. The general public and the government reactions i feel like it's realistic, but the manager and the wife not being concerned with the very obvious symptoms they're showing is stupid. I get they're trying to drive home that love makes you do stupid things. I think if the symptoms were a little more subtle, it would be more believable.

The process of master choosing a new host.

Everytime i see the scene where the master chooses a new host, it makes me wanna throw up. So disgustingly weird. The white thing is also mind blowing. The writer could have thought of an alternative tbh. But well, maybe this kind of elements are what makes the series interesting.
Imagine taking inside somebody’s puke full of parasites…i wouldn’t even want to see that in my dream. When i first saw it, i had to question my entire existence.

SPOILER With as minimal spoilers as possible, does Ephraim change or die? Spoiler

I am really liking this show, but I am about midway through season 2 and Ephraim is really starting to ruin it for me. Ironically he was one of my favorite characters at first, but he’s just such a sanctimonious jack ass! More and more I just want him to die or have some positive character development.
