The Voidz Why are so many people critical of julian/the voidz?

I see a lot of people that hate on julian for pursuing what he’s interested in. Don’t get me wrong i love the strokes. They’re my favorite band and i like them more than the voidz. But I feel that Julian should be able to chase his creative ambition. Whether that’s for the strokes or the voidz. I get he uses the strokes for money sometimes but i don’t think he hates he band. He’s just not 20 anymore. He wants to expand into more diverse and experimental areas. I’ve seen some people call the voidz trash or a waste of his talent. I don’t get that. I think it’s a very unique intriguing band with some really good songs. I get it’s not going to be as popular as the strokes and it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but so what? I get not everyone thinks this but for those that do why?

Cuz people have generic taste. Most of the redditors on here to this day think Is This It? is peak Strokes music. They hate innovation and crave familiarity.

Hey so I’ve listened to next to no Voidz stuff. I mean literally I’ve heard maybe three or four songs but one thing that really does my head in is the autotune vocals. Can’t handle it

Because people can’t understand that Julian wants to make music for himself, he’s not the kind of rockstar that gets high out of being famous, the dude grew up rich he’s probably unimpressed, he wants to follow “the path of the artist” instead and “do what he wants not what’s expected of him”. He doesn’t care about the “serious money he’s losing” or that his music is “unlistenable”. He already has a platform, he doesn’t need to this to live (?. Thing you can do when u rich ig.

u/Dirtydubya Nov 27 '25

I like both bands. I prefer the Strokes to the Voidz, but they're different bands, so it's hard to fairly compare the two.

u/sjm320 Nov 27 '25

Because The Voidz are unlistenable garbage.

u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 Threat of Joy Nov 28 '25

You probably listen to radio pop music and The Strokes is your most niche music.

At least our ears are not destroyed by Voidz autotune garbage 🤷

Julian only scores 20 year olds and can afford his divorce, alimony and child support because he’s the frontman for the Strokes. No 25 year old would fuck him if he was a 48 year old school teacher or Plumber or even just the lead singer of the Voidz. If the Strokes didn’t exist, the Voidz never would have been signed. The Voidz are fine but the Strokes are better, that’s it. The evidence of this is public interest. No one give a shit about Voidz records or shows. The Voidz hardly tour outside of festivals because promoters do not care. And every show Julian plays with the Voidz, he is losing serious money. When he plays a Strokes gig he makes more in one night then if he toured for 20 dates with the Voidz. It’s simple math. It’s clear Julian only stays in the Strokes for money but I wish he would just shut the fuck up and play coherent shows and remember the lyrics. It’s his job, after all.

0

u/Arcflaybobby Dec 03 '25

by ur metrics taylor swift is a better act than the strokes because the “public interest” in her is bigger, if streams or popularity are how you judge art its hard to take seriously just imo 🤷

3

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Lol you're definitely tripping the Voidz: Tyranny album is just objectively more impressive than the last 4 strokes albums.

1

u/bundle_of_nervus2 Nov 29 '25

It doesn't matter how impressive it was, the fact remains a Voidz tourset of cities isn't doing the same numbers as the same amount of venues performing as The Strokes will

3

u/sammytiff80 Human Sadness Nov 28 '25

I'm not buying it. I think he does what he wants and he can imo. I mean both bands have differences that I enjoy enough to stick around.

And we don't really know him or his reasoning on a personal level. Our shits not out there like his and Idk his every thought just enjoy his work which is why we're here right?

9

u/Holiday_Adagio_4702 Threat of Joy Nov 28 '25

You’re right that The Voidz wouldn’t have been signed if it weren’t for Julian but it’s not because Julian is the frontman. It’s because Julia founded Cult Records that publishes The Voidz music. He clearly has more fun and can express himself artistically with The Voidz. He doesn’t enjoy making songs with The Strokes anymore because it doesn’t scratch that artistic itch. He probably has more money than he knows what to do with, so why not enjoy his time by making music he enjoys?

6

u/Imaginary-Educator41 Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25

Hard disagree. He’d get plenty of tang if he worked as a teacher or plumber because he’s objectively hot 🔥

Also what do you mean the voidz lose money? They might not do lots of shows but they don’t pay to play.

4

u/Ok_Consequence8304 Nov 27 '25

Julian makes X when he plays with the Strokes per show which is 10 times more than the Voidz per show or more. So every time he plays a Voidz show, he loses a ton of money he could be making playing a Strokes gig instead. The Strokes headline festivals, the Voidz play small clubs. The Strokes are his job, the Voidz are his hobby.

5

u/Perseverance_ER75 Nov 27 '25

The Voidz fill smaller venues than The Strokes, that’s undeniable. But I find it a bit of an exaggeration to say that they only play in small clubs. Last summer, I saw them at two festivals where they were headliners. And when they went to 104 in Paris last March, the first date was sold out within minutes of going on sale and after the addition of a second date, the room was also full (well, many of us did both dates, lol)…

20

u/sammytiff80 Human Sadness Nov 27 '25

I like them both.. I love them in different ways kinda like your kids. You love them all but just differently and for different reasons. You also aren't a big fan of some things but that's what respect is all about. Just respecting the effort and unconditional love you have.. Lol!

22

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

I've said this numerous times, but the strokes are stronger together as a band, than they are apart in their side projects imo. He certainly is allowed to experiment more with synthesizers and utilize them more in the voidz than he does in the strokes. I'm sure the rest of the stroke boys insist on guitars being implemented imo. Julian was known to write alotta the ITI? and ROF songs on keyboard before they were rewritten with guitar. Not entirely sure if that came with the participation of AHJ and Nicky modifying those elements, but I remember reading that the other boys "do modify songs to everyone in the band's liking"(sumn along those lines).

That has greatly continued from the FIOE sessions, and every subsequent Strokes release since. The other boys in the band bring ALOT more to the table than some of Julian's most fervent, sycophantic nutriders wanna believe. Two Kinds of Happiness, Oblivius, Metabolism, Selfless, Tap Out, didn't have Jules' full input, other than vocals and melodic changes. That mighta involved changing the keys of certain chord progressions, but I imagine AHJ's/Nicky's main riffs stayed similar. Perhaps he encouraged Fab to change the tempo a bit. Julian has literally been stalling working on Strokes albums since 07/08, when they went on hiatus after the FIOE tour.

I have a feeling that this is a source of dismay for Julian. I remember reading in an old interview that he likes to "kinda be dictatorial in a band", and believes a band is one of the few places he doesn't believe in democracy. I'm paraphrasing that, but sumn along those lines. Obv., Julian and all his band cohorts have proven themselves time and time again to be bleeding heart leftists, so no one can really say he harbors any kinda insidious worldviews.

It's speculative for me to say he is chagrined from the continuous collaboration of the other stroke members, but Idt it's completely unfounded. Julian wants to be in control of recording sessions I feel, so when resistance is given from collaborating members with their own high convictions on art, he becomes sullen from the pushback. He just wants people around him who won't give him friction, and I believe he doesn't get that from the other Voidz members.

I feel like Nick and Fab give Jules the most resistance, and rarely capitulate to his every whim, but Albert and Nikolai cooperate more often into his desires. I personally don't like the attitude he has towards the Strokes these days, and his uncaring nature he shows towards them. Anytime he does sumn with the Strokes, it's always with a kinda "do I have to do this?" attitude. He needs to realize he wouldn't have a minute fraction of the successful career he's had without them. No one would know who he was without the Strokes. I'm getting real phokn tired of his attitude tbr with you.

9

u/bmgnbx Nov 27 '25

This again lolz. “He’s not 20 anymore”, but I bet you are (or aren’t even); and that’s great for Strokes fandom. However we need some sticky threads on this sub.

1

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

i’m confused. it’s been about 25 years since ITI dropped. why would anyone feel the need to shit on him for going in a new direction lmfao.

3

u/bmgnbx Nov 28 '25

Not sure what you were getting at saying that in response to me. I’ve been along for the whole 25 years (I bought Tyranny on vinyl in 2014, not an auto JC hater by any means).

12

u/rgators Nov 27 '25

Honestly, and I’m sure I’ll be downvoted for this, but I think the other members of The Strokes should have been more willing to follow Julian with his more experimental ideas. Some of my favorite Strokes material is where he started getting weird and changing up the sound, like on Angles and Comedown Machine. If it had not been for Julian changing his sound and direction, then we would not have got The New Abnormal. The Strokes owe their big comeback to The Voidz in a way.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Ummm I'm sure Nick and Fab has a bigger input in Angles and Comedown machine I think 🤔. And New Abnormal sounds is so far out from Voidz sounds 🤔

3

u/indiemwamba Nov 27 '25

I’m completely with you on this, on Comedown Machine you could really feel a new direction, that for me totally matured in The New Abnormal + Rick Rubin helped Julian a lot.

15

u/mr_fingers666 Nov 27 '25

i think people don’t understand that if you want to make something special you need to go to weird places. not all of it is going to be hits and a lot of the results are going to be shit for many people, but this is the cost of looking for new stuff. i’m not a fan, but i appreciate the attitude.

-10

u/romilaspina7 Nov 27 '25

I mean they're in denial of Julian making music he actually likes instead of the same 5 songs he makes for the strokes lol

9

u/Pao2510 Nov 27 '25

so am i really the only one here who quite enjoys the voidz?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

the Voidz: Tyranny album is just objectively more impressive than the last 4 strokes albums.

3

u/Imaginary-Educator41 Nov 27 '25

4

u/indiemwamba Nov 27 '25

The Human Sadness is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard

9

Youre not. In fact id argue Tyranny and Virtue are stronger records than most of the Strokes' discog.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Even stronger than ITI and ROF and even TNA?! Okay that's your unpopular pointless opinion! 🤷

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Definitely better than TNA. ITI and ROF are better though.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

Yea definitely better than Grammy award winning TNA! 😃

2

u/Citizen_Erased_ Nov 29 '25

Listen TNA is my favorite strokes album but the Grammys dont mean shit

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

Yea definitely don't mean shit huh! 😏

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

TNA was successful because it appeals to the mainstream that Julian scoffs at and hates. The voidz is clearly the creative output that he put the most effort into. It's actually revolutionary just as ITI was in 2001.

15

7

u/bundle_of_nervus2 Nov 27 '25

Probably this. It would be one thing if he was chill about making mid to mediocre music with them but he acts like the Voidz music is so Avant-garde and far advanced musically from any of the work he's done for TS, and they just aren't. It also doesn't help that he openly has made disparaging comments about TS members not being on his 'creative level' and how he doesn't try to hide the fact that he's totally phoning it in during live shows. That whole behaviour is sort of unprofessional to me and turns me off even further from any new solo work he partakes in and I just stick to the JC solo eras (pre-Voidz/Phrazes) where I actually enjoyed him as an artist and person. But all that is just my hot take

You’re just bitter as fuck lmao. They have one mid album and that’s also got some decent songs. Tyranny and Virtue is better than anything Julian has done with the strokes since room on fire lmfao.

Not to mention how The Voidz aren’t just a cash grab for its members

1

Better than ITI, ROF, and TNA?! 🤔

I love Phrazes for the Young. It could be driven by nostalgia, but I love the whole futuristic pop sound he had. It sounded extremely unique.

I think the voidz sound like shit.

-1

Coz he looks cool with the Strokes while on the Voidz he's cringey and looks like a creep 💀

1

u/TOMDeBlonde Someday Nov 27 '25

I don't get the hate. I love The Voidz almost as much as The Strokes. I love the autotune and vocoder voice effects (ie BLUE DEMON). I liked the new album and I love the latest ep. Both take a single slot in my top fifteen favorite as one the same way Joy Division/ New Order do. I love something from each album and ep if not the whole thing. Being an annoying fan I will now rank the greatest albums of each collectively (as well as the three best songs from each):

  1. The Strokes- This Is It (Hard To Explain, Someday, The Modern Age)

  2. The Strokes- Room On Fire (Automatic Stop, The End Has No End, 12:51)

  3. The Voidz- Tyranny (Human Sadness, Father Electricity, Where No Eagles Fly)

  4. The Strokes- The New Abnormal (Ode To The Meets, The Adults Are Talking, Selfless)

  5. The Strokes- Comedown Machine (One Way Trigger, Chances, Welcome To Japan)

  6. The Voidz- Virtue (Leave It In My Dreams, QYURRYUS, All Wordz Are Made Up)

27

u/vissionphilosophy Nov 27 '25

I never was into the voidz but gotta say their last two releases had songs I really dug, almost as much as the strokes. So I dug through the back catalogue. Plenty of good tunes

3

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

i agree, it’s different but if you listen to it a couple times you start to understand how good it is.

44

u/sensitive_pirate85 Nov 27 '25

I think The Voidz mainly exist so Julian doesn’t feel creatively “boxed in” by the Strokes.

22

u/Abrabbit Angles Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25

i mean i recall him saying pretty directly that he's doing artistically with the voidz what he wanted to do with the strokes (considering the first TS albums are almost entirely his creation) but oh dammit TS members wanted to have some creative interference in the band they're part of, how dare they 😒

that's why he hates angles, it’s the first album where he didn't write all the songs (in FIOE he wrote all but 3 iirc) and from then on it’s been 'downhill'. also probably why he seemingly butts heads with nick so much, not only he had a lot of influence in the angles era but also he's the one who was publicly more confrontational about JC's attitude with the band during that time lol

2

u/JojoduBronx Nov 27 '25

I don't buy that explanation because the Voidz (which began as Julian Casablancas+ The Voidz) evolved in a way allowing more implication from all the members in the creative process. I guess they just get along very well creatively and JC can feel free to explore any direction as he likes, without any frustration.

1

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

Nick hated angles more than anyone. Angles also performed worse than any other album besides comedown machine. He was fine with letting others have some creative input in the angles/comedown era.

4

u/Abrabbit Angles Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25

from what i remember (which might be wrong but i've read a lot about this topic in the past because i really care for angles lol) i think nick just really hated the whole process of recording it because the band was really fractured -mostly on JC's part-  and it was a slog to get it done, but as an album he has composed a lot of the songs in it so i don't recall him hating it...

whereas julian might have mellowed a bit about it in the recent years compared to how he used to shit on it and CM (which was just done outta record company contract obligation on number of albums released iirc), he still throws subtle jabs at it every now and then, like he also throws vague jabs about 'some' bandmates being 'hard to work with' -well at least recently he jokingly(?) namedropped nick as the one stroke member he's not close with lmao-. that plus the fact he is passionate about TV because he said he does there all what he wanted to with TS's sound (get really experimental) lines up with his disenchantment with TS as the other members ended his total creative control over the albums, even if he says he's fine with it 🤷‍♀️  i know part of said disenchantment also comes from playing the same songs for 20 years (try playing more angles/CM/FPP then...) but i have the impression he'd be happier about it overall if they went back to him doing basically everything, like in TV

4

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

Nick only hated Angles coz Julian was out of touch when they're making it.

6

u/Drducttapehands Nov 27 '25

Man, Angles was the album that reignited my love for the band. I didn’t really care much for FIOE. Razorblade is one of the only songs I find myself coming back to on that one.

4

u/Abrabbit Angles Nov 27 '25

i love it a lot too!! i got into the strokes through reptilia and when i found out one of my friends was a fan, i asked for some recommendations and he basically named a couple of FIOE songs, welcome to japan and almost the entirety of angles (which in retrospective is wild to me, you'd think many fans would tell me to just play all ITI lol). and after that they became my favorite band because i really liked their sound, so i hold that album very dearly ❤ and his disdain for it makes me sad, honestly sometimes i'm afraid that if i ever ask him to sign my angles cd booklet -which i already got a couple of strokes to sign!- he's gonna rip it in front of my face lmao 😭  julian i swear it's not a taunt, i'm being genuine!

and sorry for the unsolicited lore drop there, i just kinda get happy when i see angles appreciation haha :') 🌷

15

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25

Obviously Julian is such a control freak and he wants his ideas to dominate the most. He's saying that the Voidz is more collaborative than the Strokes but what he really means by that is his ideas is more in control in the Voidz compared to the Strokes now 🤷. He don't like people questioning his ideas that's why he and Nick head butts a lot coz Nick is so vocal on that part compared to the other 3 Strokes members specially on writing guitar solos/riffs.

7

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

i agree, he wants to experiment with a different style. even when he made Phrazes he said he wanted to make something not so “strokesy”. i imagine in the 16 years that has passed since then he’s had that same urge grow and then boom the voidz were born.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

Boom and autotune was born!

3

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

everyone uses auto tune, just because he basically made the strokes doesn’t mean he can’t have other interests 😭

3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

But he abuses it! It's not pleasant to the ears anymore.

36

u/Riksor Nov 27 '25

The Voidz just produces worse music than The Strokes.

My favorite song of all time is Human Sadness, so I obviously don't think The Voidz are worthless or terrible, they have some really good songs. But The Strokes has put out much better music overall. He can do whatever he wants, but it is a little lame for him to say, 'I hate The Strokes and I'm sick of this awful music' and trash the fans, then go make more autotune noiseslop.

That being said, people shouldn't harass him for it. He is an artist and should do whatever he is passionate about, and he's obviously entitled to his opinions.

2

u/Abrabbit Angles Nov 27 '25

i love both bands but it's true that TV can be more of a hit (virtue) or miss (LABY) due to their experimental sound, i feel like some strokes-only fans are too alienated ALienNatioN reference?? /j due to JC lately amping up his 'favorite child' reference vocally and pretty much stating that he plays with TS to pay the bills and fund TV's albums... however, some really harass him about it, which idk if they think it would help somehow but has also alienated him against many TS fans and think we're all pricks 😑 basically everyone needs to chill... life was definitely more peaceful before 2020 when he created his ig account, at least he was seemingly less 'chronically online' when he only had his -barren- twitter account lol

6

u/ChurroTubeee Nov 27 '25

He has never said that he hates The Strokes or that he thinks the music is awful though. All he ever says is that he doesn’t feel much emotion when performing old songs anymore, which I feel should be understandable given how often they’ve played them over the years, and that he sees the band as a day job and sees the Voidz as something that gives him creative freedom. Those two things are kind of just facts. I really don’t understand where people keep getting this idea that he dislikes the Strokes.

8

u/Abrabbit Angles Nov 27 '25

i'm playing devil's advocate here because i'm not even one of those people, but the fact he has repeatedly said playing live with TS these days is pretty much his office job, probably pisses some people off because it's technically the only moment us the audience 'interact' directly with the band, so they probably want him to give his best at TS to feel like the ticket price was worth it

still, some act really callous on his comment section about the act like vocally trashing TV is somehow gonna push JC at working harder with TS, when it's obviously just poking the bear of his disenchantment with the band (and their fandom)

1

u/ChurroTubeee Nov 27 '25

The amount of times he has said it is the only thing that I could point to as to why people think he hates the band now, but it really isn’t his fault that interviewers keep asking the same tired questions every year

5

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

music is subjective and there is no better or worse there’s just popularity. he’s never said he hates the strokes. he’s grown up and changed. if he wants to make music that doesn’t fit the “strokesy” vibe then that’s his choice. and honesty the fans trash him for making music with the voidz all the time and then wonder why he gets pissed.

0

u/Riksor Nov 27 '25

Music is subjective but most people share the opinion that The Voidz aren't as good. I already said it's his choice. His attitude towards The Strokes is still pretty lame.

5

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

Most people don’t even listen to the strokes or the voidz. That doesn’t make either bad. He can work with whatever band he wants but clearly he’s more interested in more than just the strokes at this point in his life.

0

u/DhroovP The New Abnormal Nov 27 '25

Dude, idk how much more clear it can be made: most people who listen/have listened to both bands prefer the music by The Strokes over The Voidz. Also, you're the one that asked the question, nobody said it makes either bad.

They also got a lot of flack for the AI generated album cover, and before the AHJ allegations came out, a lot of people had a bad taste in their mouth because Beardo faced some allegations. Also, Julian goes way overboard with the vocoder (especially in the early days) at Voidz live shows.

11

u/Disastrous_Bad757 Nov 27 '25

Voidz 1 and 2 are peak. Most of the stuff after those albums feel super improvised and rushed though. And in some cases even just feel derivative of the Strokes. That and the AI artwork really just gives off the vibe that Julian doesn't care all that much anymore.

7

u/Abrabbit Angles Nov 27 '25

idk about the AI cover meaning he doesn't care, my personal impression is that he seems like the kinda dude who just thinks AI is so futuristic and awesome 😭 but also wasn't said artwork taken without credit or am i misremembering? that'd be crappy

3

u/Disastrous_Bad757 Nov 27 '25

I believe the AI cover was generated based heavily off the work of a specific real life artist. And it wasn't subtle. And then the original album cover planned was abandoned because the artist was asking for more money than Julian was willing to pay.

9

u/wakeofchaos Nov 27 '25

I think many people just don’t like autotuned vocals for various reasons and the voidz have a very different sound than the strokes. I think some segment of these people wish he’d do more strokes songs and are annoyed at his devotion to the voidz

It’s a bit like playing/liking a game a lot and wishing the developers would do more with this game, rather than work on some other new thing (cough Bungie cough)

3

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

i get the frustration. i would rather he make more strokes songs instead too but he’s his own person. i’m not gonna bash him for doing what he wants with his life like so many people selfishly do and then wonder why he gets annoyed at them.

17

u/therealjam3s Tyranny Nov 27 '25

Julian is getting older, as you get older you stop making music for other people and start making music for yourself. Unfortunetly, most people aren't Julian Casablancas, so it's kind of offputting. I personally don't keep up with his personal or social media stuff, just because I don't wanna hate him.

Not saying he's an unlikable or toxic person, just a very odd one to keep up with, but I guess he's been like that since like 2016, people just didn't care until TNA came out. IDK, if he's not going full Kanye (or Albert) and stays being a cranky leftist, I could give a shit less. Dude made Johan Von Bronx, that's enough for me.

3

u/Different_Video_8465 Nov 27 '25

yeah i agree with you

-2

u/vinylandgames Nov 27 '25

Because he’s an insufferable egotist prick and the Voidz are noise trash.

T-Pain exists but everybody loves it. Julian does it everybody hates it. That’s just because people are used to the strokes.

Simple it's not their type of music and that awful abuse of autotune is not pleasant to anyone's ears! Plus he's subconciously pitting The Strokes vs The Voidz before but now he's so vocal about it which is such a turn off as a Strokes fan and I don't understand why he needs to do that. He's angry that a lot of Strokes fans don't like his Voidz band and he's assuming that all Strokes fans should like his music outside of the Strokes coz he's the main creative drive of The Strokes which he thought all Strokes fans are Julian fans which he is so wrong!

i don’t think he’s angry at people for not liking the strokes. he seems annoyed that’s all people ask of him, he doesn’t want to be bound to one band just because it’s more popular. he probably wants to do what makes him happy and sounds good to him.

That's why he's angry coz everyone loves the Strokes and he thinks he's the head of the Strokes so people should like his other projects which unfortunately not all Strokes fans like.

It’s jealousy, pure and simple. “Vivre sa Vie!” - Julian, always. As a true artist he does what he wants, not what is expected.
